Our take on the Denon DSD-500 Cocoon Home

by Ralph Graves
Denon
Denon Cocoon Home

With the dock retracted, the surface of the Cocoon Home is nothing but smooth.

How about a powered speaker system that looks as cool as your music sounds? That's what Denon was after with the Cocoon Home. The system won an International Design Excellence Award in 2012. The Cocoon is a study of smooth, curved lines that make it an attractive addition to your home, even when not in use.

The Cocoon's dock for your iPod® or iPhone® can be retracted into the body of the unit, so it's out of sight when you don't need it.The dock's face has an OLED screen built in that displays track information.

Amazing sound quality

But the Cocoon is not just about looks The system features four high-quality speakers: two 1-1/2" tweeters for clear highs, and two 3-15/16" woofers for detailed mids and lows. And each speaker is powered by its own 25 watt Class D amplifier, ensuring clean, spacious, and accurate sound.

Wireless convenience and built-in Internet radio

It's easy to integrate the Cocoon into your home Wi-Fi® network. A built-in Internet radio function with three presets lets you quickly access your “go-to” stations online.

You can also stream music wirelessly from your networked computer, as well as DLNA-compatible Android™ smartphones.

Apple AirPlay®

The Cocoon is AirPlay-compatible, which gives you additional options when you use iTunes® on your computer. Just open iTunes, select the Cocoon in the AirPlay menu and start streaming music to the system. Use your iPhone, iPad or iPod touch® to control the iTunes menu on your computer. Or stream music directly from your Apple hand-held device.

More music choices

A built-in USB port in the Cocoon Home lets you play music from a USB flash drive. And you're not just limited to MP3 files, either. The system can also play uncompressed WAV and FLAC files, too, either from your flash drive, or streamed from a a computer or other device. Features

Cocoon: The Denon Cocoon is a desktop powered speaker with a built-in iPod dock, Ethernet/WiFi network connection for AirPlay and DLNA connectivity, plus Internet Radio access. In order to access the unit's Network, AirPlay, DLNA, and Internet Radio functions, you will need to download Denon's Cocoon App onto your Apple iOS device or Android smartphone. The Cocoon features a sleek, rounded shape and mirror-finished enclosure that complement any room. Its touch-sensitive controls are backlit, so they effectively disappear when the speaker is off.

Two-Way Speaker Design: The Cocoon's two-way speakers are acoustically optimized to ensure premium, high-fidelity sound. Two 1.5" tweeters, two double-layer 4" woofers, dual bass ports, and four 25-watt amplifiers create rich bass without distortion; while a pre-defined equalizer (not user adjustable) precisely balances low, mid, and high frequencies for powerful performance at any volume. The Loudness function enhances bass and treble sounds at low volume levels. The system volume level ranges from 0 to 50, but you can set a different maximum volume level.

Network Connection: The Cocoon is equipped with dual network connection methods. There's an RJ-45 LAN (Ethernet) port for direct wired connection to your home network, and there's also the built-in WiFi feature that includes WiFi Protected Setup for safe and secure connection to your wireless home network. The unit's network connection lets you listen to music from your Apple device (via AirPlay) or Android smartphone (via DLNA), your music files stored on your Windows PC (via DLNA), and music content from Internet Radio (via vtuner & TuneIn).

Note: This unit's RJ-45 Ethernet port supports 10BASE-T/100BASE-TX and requires an Ethernet (LAN) category 5 or higher cable, Router, Modem, and Internet connection. When using a wireless LAN connection, your system must feature an wireless router/access-point.

Cocoon App: Download Denon's free Cocoon app for incredible functionality and control of the Cocoon from your Apple iOS or Android device. The Denon Cocoon App offers premium music playback via the Cocoon for music stored on your Apple iOS or Android device, and also allows you to create playlists. But you're not limited to your own music; you can also listen to thousands of free internet radio stations from all over the world via vTuner and TuneIn. When connected to your home Wi-Fi network you can further expand your choice of music by using the Music Server to browse and play all the music that is stored on your PC, Mac or Network Attached Storage (NAS) drive.`

Denon Cocoon Home

Written By Harry, Columbus, Ohio on Sunday, March 23, 2014

This is a very nice product but as expected with Denon it is a little quirky. First unit did not work and Crutchfield sent me a new one (the reason why I will always buy from Crutchfield). I think the sound is excellent and though wireless can be a little challengin to set up having Airplay is great. I especially love the internet radio stations and there are literally thousands from all over the world.
Pros:
Great sound, Airplay, Looks cool as well.
Cons:
Wireless is a little challenging to set up but once that is done that is the real harm of this unit

Denon DSD-500 Cocoon Home

Written By S. Taylor, Frederick, MD on Thursday, January 16, 2014
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Nice sound at lower to mid volumes but does crack a little a high volume and bass is not as good as I expected. Does not have a lightning port for newer iPhones but Airplay is a very nice feature and no need to plug in. Wireless antenna is very weak on unit, needs to be within 15 ft of router to even get a signal, so limited on placement for Airplay and internet radio. Is OK for the home but not for the price.
Pros:
Airplay, internet radio, remote control iPhone / iPad app
Cons:
Weak wireless, poor bass, overpriced

Great Unit

Written By Pat, Carver, MN on Wednesday, December 18, 2013
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Received this unit early December 2014. My first reaction taking it out of the box was this is a heavy well built solid unit. Sound quality is very good. Works great with AirPlay from my I-phone.
Pros:
Great sound, easy to use. I am impressed with it. Easy access to many stations on the Internet.
Cons:
Someone else can cut in on your song by starting airplay from there device. Not a big deal. Don't bump the volume slide on your I-phone. It gets really loud immediately.

Nice sound system

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

If you want to play from your docked iPhone or stream music from a Denon AVR this is a good product. It adds your stored music into a new room.
Pros:
Adds your music where you want it.
Cons:
The wifi signal is weak - connecting requires either proximity to the router or a wifi booster.

Needs a broader target audience

Written By JimS, Oklahoma City on Thursday, December 12, 2013
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

First unit was defective, second unit seems OK after brief use. This was a "free gift" from Crutchfield after ordering a Denon AVR. I'm not an iPod user so much of Cocoon's functionality is not applicable to me. Music via the Aux input and from the network sounds good. Denon's user guide (pdf only) is typically mediocre. Evidently the Android app for control doesn't include tablet implementation.
Pros:
Good sound quality. Sleek appearance.
Cons:
User unfriendliness for non Apple consumers.

Dennon Cocoon DSD-500 Review

Written By Chris F., San Francisco, CA on Tuesday, August 13, 2013
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

If you want to use Airplay, this is a great product. My wife and kids kept playing music directly from thier Macs and iphones and it was driving me crazy. Now it is very simple for them to send their source directly to the Cocoon via Airplay. Even their bad music is more bareable with a decent set of speakers.
Pros:
- Good sound, nice bass - Very easy to use - Airplay rocks for those with Apple products - Airplay allows your iphone, ipad, etc to control volume - like having a remote
Cons:
- Midrange a little muddy - Watch the volume on your Airplay device because if it is set high then when your source begins it will be blaring. Denon should probably release a firmware patch that starts the volume at 40 or 50% at the start of every Airplay session.

Nice piece but lacks musicality

Written By utekai, chicago, il on Sunday, June 30, 2013
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This is a nice piece. In general I liked it a lot. Bass booms. Easy setup. Good set of features. I got it as the same time as the Marantz Consolette (cost a lot more) and the B&W A7. Only kept the A7. Between the Cocoon and the Consolette, the two are so similar that the Cocoon wins hands down due to price. Plus the Consolette's best feature (the nice looking back) is usually hidden. Consolette may sound slightly better overall but the price difference is not justified. However, when the two are played next to the A7, it highlights their lack of musicality or pleasingness to the ear. I can listen to the A7 for long periods of time with no fatigue. The Cocoon and Consolette has a playback issue that just seems to cause fatigue and you want to turn them off or turn them down. Can't quite place just what it is, but it was a cardboard-iness in the playback. The A7, with the bass port and whatever they do for highs and mids, just seems to work. It's musicality is excellent. Something else, getting the Cocoon and the Consolette at the same time, it sure looks like the same company is designing, building and packaging both Denon and Marantz.
Pros:
Looks ok. Nice feature set. Easy setup. Denon name. Easily beats the Consolette in a price/performance matchup.
Cons:
Lacks musicality.

Great sound, set up was a bit challenging.

Written By RickP, Fairfax Station, VA on Saturday, December 29, 2012
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Cocoon produces incredibly good sound for something its size and the fact that it connects wirelessly. I do find that it cuts out every once in a while, which could be due to excessing network traffic (there are five of us, each with a wireless device). Set up was fairly straightforward, but having to program it via my iPhone while it was docked created some problems: my fingers are large and my eye sight is not what it once was. I found it quite challenging to enter our network password. That being said, I am very happy with the product.
Pros:
Sound, ease of operation
Cons:
Set up via iPhone while docked

1 question already asked

Is the dock connector a lightning format (iPhone 5, 5s, 5c), or the old style? [ Mark  Dec 08, 2013 ]
9 answers
  • No it is not a lighting format you would have to buy the adapter in order to use the lighting adapter [ SAMUEL   Dec 09, 2013 ]
  • It's the old style wide connector (30+pins) which is just perfect for my iPod Classic 164Gig. There is a converter cable with the other end for the new iPods and iPhone 5+. [ JOSE   Dec 09, 2013 ]
  • Old Style, does not have lightning, but you can connect to it with airplay. [ TRAVIS   Dec 09, 2013 ]
  • Old style... Probably the reason they're on clearance. But they're awesome for an old iPod or iPhone that just functions as solely a music player. [ Kyle Beattie   Dec 09, 2013 ]
  • I'm sorry this unit was sent back and another receiver has been purchased. As a result of this no review can be given. [ AARON   Dec 09, 2013 ]
  • Old style 30 pin connector, you'll need an adapter cable or just use built in Airplay [ JEFF   Dec 09, 2013 ]
  • unfortunately the old style, and I can't make it work with an adaptor as well :-( [ ARIEL S   Dec 09, 2013 ]
  • It's the old style with the 30-pin dock. [ LEVI   Dec 09, 2013 ]
  • It is not a lightning connector [ JEREMY P   Dec 09, 2013 ]
