There's a reason why the Denon DSD-300 Cocoon Portable won an International Design Excellence Award in 2012. The shape of this portable wireless speaker system is a series of gently flowing curves, giving the Cocoon Portable a unique and inviting appearance. And there's practicality behind the style, too. The case is a single piece of molded plastic, making the system weather-resistant to the great outdoors. It also has a carry handle incorporated into the back, as well as a hidden storage compartment for the included remote.
The Cocoon's dock for your iPod® or iPhone® retracts easily into the body of the unit, so it's out of sight when you don't need it. The dock's face has a small screen built in that displays track information.
All the connections, including the Ethernet port, are in the back and out of sight.
The system features two high-quality full-range speakers. Each 3-15/16” speaker is powered by its own 25 watt amplifier. Even though the Cocoon Portable is a compact system, you'll enjoy clear, accurate sound. And you can take your music with you thanks to a built-in 5-hour rechargeable battery. The system can play uncompressed WAV and FLAC files, so you can enjoy your best-sounding digital music.
You can easily integrate the Cocoon into your home Wi-Fi® network. A built-in Internet radio function with three presets lets you quickly access your “go-to” stations online. You can also stream music wirelessly from your tablet or smartphone. The Cocoon's Wi-Fi connection is compatible with both Apple and Android devices.
The Cocoon is AirPlay-compatible, which gives you additional options when you use iTunes® on your computer. Just open iTunes, select the Cocoon in the AirPlay menu and start streaming music to the system. Use your iPhone, iPad or iPod touch® to control the iTunes menu on your computer. Or stream music directly from your Apple hand-held device.
I bought my Denon AVR-X4000 receiver before the offer where these came free, so I purchased the Cocoon from the outlet. The sound is decent for it's size, and the battery life exceeded expectations. My Denon receiver streams internet radio and has app support for controlling it, so I thought this portable unit would work the same.
I was disappointed in the Cocoon app vs the Denon receiver app -- the cocoon app is sluggish and constantly loses connection, even though the Cocoon itself is still streaming just fine. I'm using the same Nexus 7 for both apps. The Cocoon app is so terrible, I just use it to set the 3 default stations. The display has a dimming feature for use at night, but it can only be accessed by the app which is not worth the time.
If the main Denon app fully supported the Cocoon (so there wouldn't be a separate app) and if the wifi reception was better, this would be a great device. I do of course wish it had USB input like the sibling DSD-500 model and/or bluetooth.
Being able to turn on the unit and listen to music without any hassle (like choosing songs to play) is the best feature.
Pros: * Remote control with holder * Decent sound * Great Internet radio
Cons: * No bluetooth * No USB input like the wired model * Extremely slow startup time * Capacitance touch buttons lag when you want to press them but are easy to press while carrying * Soft "Power off" with remote turns off sound & display, but still drains the battery after a few hours
Love this unit for all the technology, AirPlay , Wireless , Internet Radio. Wanted something with AC and battery power. Expected a little better sound quality from Denon. Outlet Open Box item was new in the box ! Great deal in outlet .
Pros: Flexibility of AC Power or Battery Technology :Airplay , Wireless, Dock, Internet Radio Outstanding Outlet price for a new unit
Cons: Sound quality could be better for a Denon
I searched the Crutchfield site for portable speakers, for my iPhone. Found several worthy hits but the Cocoon immediately drew my attention. i wanted portability as well as AC connection, I wanted docking ability and wireless AirPlay modes, and I wanted full sound. The description met all those requirements and more, especially in the price range. Of course the test is in the actual use, and I was actually surprised by the ease of set-up and use. I am most pleased by the range of volume range. The Cocoon exceeded my expectations. I recommend it highly.
Pros: Full sound/loudness. Ease of set-up - virtually none. AirPlay
Cons: None so far.
This was a freebie when I bought my DENON AVR-E400 receiver. Easy set up and works well. Plenty of power for a bedroom. Planning on making this a unit for our camper.
Pros: Easy set up, durable, great sound
Cons: None at this time.
Nice features I especially like the internet access... Sound is ok, but I have yet to figure out if there is a way to set the bass and treble...
Pros: Network access
Cons: Sounds ok, not amazing...
Sounds ok in dock. Very hard to set up on wireless network, total waste of time. Have to remove phone from case and it does not even include cable for I phone 5
Pros: Great sound
Cons: Wireless set up very hard. No cables included for I phone 5
Solid performance at this price. I also own a Audyssey Product that is similar that I purchased for much more money. The Audyssey has a bit better bass quality. However, this Denon Cocoon also has great sound. For the price I feel I made a solid purchase decision with the Denon Cocoon.
Pros: Plug it in and start playing music. Great sound quality. Small footprint for the rich sound. Great value.
Cons: Maybe a touch larger footprint than some others.
Setup was complicated, updating the firmware fails continually. The dock is only for iPhones and I have a Galaxy S4. The app was OK, but when streaming music from my NAS on shuffle play, the unit would stop playing after each song until I woke my phone. I didn't have to take any action, just turn on the phone and let the app have focus. I still haven't gotten the internet radio from the app to work yet, it keeps saying "check internet" even though I can stream through the default preset buttons on the unit itself (whatever the factory settings are set at).
Pros: Rechargeable battery seems to last pretty long.
Cons: Doesn't work well with Android Setup was complicated Problems streaming from home network
Unit is too complicated for what it is doing. Just wanted a portable unit. This seems to be designed to be more. Have a similar Bose, much easier to use and sounds better too.
i love the sound of the Cocoon portable but am unhappy with the range of the Airplay application. The WiFi signal strength of the speaker is mediocre and does not carry well through the walls of my house
Good product. Good sound . Battery life seems good. Have not used wireless features yet, as that seems a bit complicated to set up ( air play via network), but really have not tried. The set up and function menu ses a bit quirky, just setting up the date and time was a bit challenging. Overall the sound and portability is great and that most important.
Pros: Sound quality Battery life Portability
Cons: Set up and function menus quirky
