Denon is known for making great home theater receivers that deliver immersive sound with your surround speakers. But if you want your system to have a more streamlined look, check out Denon's DHT-S514 sound bar and wireless subwoofer. It's an easy way to seriously upgrade your TV's sound, along with enjoying music benefits as well. It's easy to set up, easy to control, and offers 175 watts of power to deliver movies, TV shows, and tunes with outstanding detail, rumbling bass, and sound that reaches out and grabs you.
Sound bars aren't just for enhancing your movie watching. That's why Denon equipped the DHT-S514 with three separate listening modes. Surround Movie delivers simulated surround sound with dynamic punch for soundtracks and effects that envelop you as you watch. Dialogue Enhance is great for watching TV shows that keep you scrambling for the remote to hear what the characters are saying. And music mode optimizes the sound for music listening. Speaking of music...
The DHT-S514's built-in Bluetooth capability means you can enjoy endless hours of music without ever having to touch a disc. Stream music wirelessly from your smartphone, tablet, or computer to the sound bar for rich, full-range playback. It doesn't matter whether your music is stored on your device or streamed from the cloud or music services like Spotify® or Pandora® Internet Radio. With a world of music at your fingertips, Bluetooth is the easiest way to enjoy it throughout your room.
If you've ever looked closely at the HDMI inputs on your TV (doesn't everybody?), you may have noticed the letters "ARC" next to one of them. This stands for Audio Return Channel, which that your TV can not only receive audio and video signals from a connected device, but also send audio back to that device. This functionality means you can connect the DHT-S514 to your TV with a single HDMI cable while receiving digital audio from your TV's tuner, and built-in "smart" content like Netflix. Don't have an ARC-compatible TV? No problem. There are other connection options that will cover most TVs.
Control is always at your fingertips with the DHT-S514. The included remote can learn your TV's basic commands. An HDMI connection to your TV ensures your TV's remote will automatically power on the system. Worried the bar will block the tiny remote receiver on the bottom of your TV? Connect the included IR repeater so you can maintain full remote functionality.
Add big sound to your TV without a roomful of speakers. Sound bars require minimal space and wiring, and their sleek designs complement today's flat-panel TVs. Most sound bars have their own built-in amplification, so you won't need to use a home theater receiver. Some models use advanced surround processing and carefully aimed speaker drivers to simulate the effects of a full home theater audio system.
Ease of Use: 10 (out of 10). The Denon sound bar was easy to set up...just plug it in to 110 and to the TV with an HDMI. Oh you have to plug in the sub woofer to an outlet. It connects via bluetooth. Dialogue Clarity 8 Sometimes it is out of synch. Turning it off and on fixes that. Dialogue clarity is very good but not perfect. Music Performance 8 Excellent for what it is, i.e. a bunch of small speakers. It can't compete with my big Polk's but excellent for listening to Pandora, etc. Movie Performance 9 - A giant upgrade in watching movies. Sound is sometimes overwhelming just the way it is in a theater. Bluetooth 9 - Seems to work fine.
Pros: See above. Excellent equipment. Great buy.
Cons: It is more expensive than some other highly rated sound bar systems. I haven't listened to the competitors so I can't compare. No regrets with the Denon.
For the price, one of the best sounding bars around, and I shopped many brands.
Pros: Solid build. Easy set up. Good base from the sub.
Cons: Bluetooth works fine. However, you have to re-connect your phone everytime. Minor annoyance, but automatic switching would have been nice.
This soundbar sounds great for movies. Bass is tight and not overpowering. Dialog seems to be clear. For music I find it too bright for my taste but not painfully so. It doesn't image well at all in my setup - I have not heard anything on it yet that has any real sense of depth. To be fair this is by far the least expensive amp/speakers I have owned in many years. I have installed the Denon in my 5th wheel so needed a compact system with minimal wiring. This was simple to set up - basically I plugged everything in, hooked up the HDMI cable to the ARC input on my TV and it just all worked. Bluetooth connection was also simple though I wish I could have more than one device connected. I do like that it just turns itself on and off with the TV - and that the volume can be controlled directly with the TV remote. I don't like the use of existing lights to display modes and settings. Volume is simple enough to figure out but everything else requires a trip to the manual to see what you're doing (I assume - it's on disc only and I haven't had the patience to load it up on a computer yet). Denon should have included a printed "Quick Settings" guide if they weren't going to make it intuitive.
Pros: Easy installation. Wireless subwoofer. Sounds good for the price and style.
Cons: No printed guide for settings.
Easy to set up, just unplug the old one and put this in place. Great sound, really perks up the tv speakers.
Pros: Rich sound, much better than tv speakers. Easy to set up. The control might be better, but it is so much better than the one for the old bar it replaced, no complaints.
Cons: Nothing to complain about, especially at the great Crutchfield price and shipping.
Torn between the Yamaha SRT-1000 and this product. Denon went on sale and I jumped on the deal that was $100.00 less then the Yamaha. Very impressed with the audio quality that is head and shoulders above the TV speakers. This product is used in a bedroom (12 x 16) but could be used in a larger room im sure.
Pros: Ease of setup with clear instructions. Sounds great.
Cons: I have to manually switch between bluetooth and tv....(will not automatically recognize the different sources) I am not techky enough to know if this is normal or not. Visual tracking of volume adjusting could be improved by Denon on this model.
I planned on buying this sound bar at full price, but lucked out and caught it on sale, so I jumped on the deal. Shipping was fast, as it always is with Crutchfield. Setup was extremely easy thru the ARC input. The sound bar does a great job of turning on and off with the tv. Programming my universal remote was extremely easy. The sound is very good, especially at the price. There is plenty of depth in the mids and lows, and the highs are very clear. The 3 different listening modes are pretty easy to flip through, as well as the night time mode. I wish there was more fine tuning that could be done, maybe an equalizer or a few more listening modes. However, you can control the bass directly on the sub and swap listening modes, so you do have some control. Bluetooth sync for streaming music is extremely easy. This was the feature I really didn't expect to use much, yet I've found myself using it all the time to listen to music when I generally wouldn't have even bothered turning anything on, simply because it's so quick and easy. As others have said, the remote is a little on the cheap side, but typically once I get the TV set at a volume, I don't fiddle with it too much. Plus, since you can program a universal remote, it shoudln't be a big issue. I actually like the idea of a simplified remote, compared to the LG soundbar I have, which is another full sized remote (as if I need another). Definitely buy if it's on sale, and at full price I'd likely still purchase
Pros: Depth and quality of sound, simple controls, easy setup, ARC input
Cons: Cheap remote, few controls for adjusting audio settings
Very easy to set up. Connecting with blue tooth was a breeze. Dialogue was a n improvement over tv speakers in my Panasonic Plasma TV. It will not compete with a 7.1 AV receiver with separate speakers by any means, but the ease of set up and ease of use are a definite plus.!
Pros: Ease of set up, ease of use
Cons: not the spacial clarity of an independent av receiver -separate speaker set up
Looked and listened to sound bars ranging in price from 350 to 1300. This is the best choice in this price range.
Pros: Subwoofer has its own volume control.
Great sound, easy install
Pros: Easy install, wireless
The dialog mode really helps me understand the spoken words versus all the background noise and/or music.
Upgraded from a Samsung sound bar with my 60 inch Samsung TV. WOW, what a difference! Very clear and great bass. The wireless subwoofer and the bluetooth are nice touches. Easy to assemble out of the box. Well worth the money.
Pros: Clear, crisp sound Great bass Wireless subwoofer Bluetooth
Great sound! Feel like you're in a theater. Had some technical problems with my sony bravia tv but kept system because of the exceptional sound. Crutchfield technical team had me do a workaround with these issues and am currently happy with system.
Pros: great surround sound.
Cons: had some HDMI issues.
I spent many hours of research and a few more bucks than I wanted to before making this purchase. With that said the Denon sound bar was worth every penny. I have a Samsung 6000 60" TV and it sync'd perfectly to the HDMI ARC port (cable was provided). It looks and works so seamless that it's hard to notice there's actually a sound bar connected until you turn the TV on. Great sound and with the different sound modes you can match the sound to what you watching. Bluetooth connection to my IPhone was easy and works flawlessly.
Cons: A little pricing but you get what you pay for
First off you couldn't ask for a better company than Crutchfield. Fast free shipping. Tech support. You can't beat it. I'm a Denon guy so I guess this might be a little biased. The wireless subwoofer sounds great. Deep rich bass. The over all sound is great. I now find myself listening to music from the TV channels. The Bluetooth works great and has no problem picking up the signal from my smart phone. I like it so much I'm going to by another one.
Pros: All cables supplied. Fast easy hook up.
Nice product. Much better than TV speakers. Subwoofer paired flawlessly and adds richness. Bluetooth audio paired easily and sounds great. Some dialog is still a little hard to distinguish although it is much better than the tv speakers. The IR blaster is a nice touch since the sound bar definitely blocks the tv IR port. Took several tries and a call to tech support to finally get the sound bar to recognize the tv and direct tv remote commands for on/off and volume, etc. Other reviews were pretty much right on the money.
Pros: Multiple connection options, great sound, easy once set up
Cons: Difficult to program for TV remote
Very fast delivery, very well packaged.
Pros: Easy to set up Soild sound for a sound bar Very convient to use
Cons: For the price, Denon could have provided longer connection wiring.
It does just what I need it to do and with pure quality crisp sound
Pros: All around good
Cons: No cons on my behalf
This is a great product. Easy to set up and sounds awesome. I especially like the different listening modes. The one that enhances the vocal range is really good for sports, cutting down on crowd noise, etc. I tested out the Sonos, the Bose Cinema Sound Bar and several others. For the price, I thought this was the best.
Pros: Easy to set up. Different surround modes work well. Bluetooth is a nice plus. The design is sleek, compact and looks good mounted or not.
Cons: The only thing that I would say is not great, is that the remote has limited range. However, you can set the bar up to work with pretty much any remote. So it's not really a problem.

Home Theater Soundbar Speaker System: As today's flat-panel TVs get thinner and thinner, so does their sound quality, and the DHT-S514 features a host of high-performance components to deliver rich, enveloping wide range sound. Denon's DHT-S514 home theater soundbar speaker system will transform your flat-panel TV into a home entertainment system which will envelop you in rich, room-filling sound; delivering deep bass from its wireless subwoofer and clear mids and detailed highs from its multi-driver high-fidelity soundbar. Simple to set up and easy to use, the DHT-S514 lets you enjoy powerful, dynamic audio from your favorite TV shows, movies, games, and music.
175-Watts (Peak) System Power: Both the soundbar and the subwoofer feature advanced digital audio amplification that delivers crystal clear sound along with wide dynamic range, as well as providing high energy efficiency and operational stability for long life. Featuring 175-watts (Peak) of total system power, the DHT-S514 soundbar and wireless subwoofer together deliver a true high-fidelity sound.
Dolby Digital/DTS Decoding w/ Virtual Surround Sound: Your favorite movies and music will come alive with built-in Dolby Digital and DTS decoding, and you can enjoy enveloping surround sound thanks to Denon's exclusive Virtual Surround processing, which uses advanced psychoacoustic algorithms that simulate the surround sound of a multi-channel home theater speaker system. Denon's Virtual Surround offers several Listening modes to tailor the system to your content.
Note: Do not listen to this system and your TV's built-in speakers simultaneously. Make sure to turn of your televisions speakers. If your TV does not let you turn the speakers off, then mute the audio from the TV's speakers.
Digital & Analog Inputs (including HDMI): Denon's DHT-S514 home theater soundbar speaker system offers a variety of digital & analog inputs to connect to your TV and AV gear; including HDMI, optical/coaxial digital, and analog stereo minijack. All inputs are all selected by the television button on DHT-S514's front-panel or remote, but which is active is determined by auto-priority. If only one input is receiving a signal, that input will play. If more than one input is receiving a signal, the order of priority is HDMI, Digital Optical, Digital Coaxial, and Analog.
Note: The digital optical output and HDMI ARC terminals of most newer flat-panel TVs only send an audio signal in 5.1ch when receiving Dolby Digital/DTS surround sound from the TV's built-in tuner, network connection, or connected USB device; and will output only 2ch stereo from sources connected to the TV via HDMI, or RCA (like your Blue-ray/DVD player or satellite/cable box). That's why we recommend that in addition to the HDMI ARC connection from the soundbar speaker to your TV, you should also run separate digital audio cables (optical, coaxial, or HDMI) from your satellite/cable box and Blu-ray player to the soundbar speaker for best sound performance.
Bluetooth (2.1+EDR) Audio Streaming: You can also stream music wirelessly right to the DHT-S514 from a compatible Bluetooth-enabled device; such as a smartphone, tablet, or computer (with Bluetooth A2DP capability). You'll be able to stream stored music and music apps on your mobile device (like iPhone, Android, and Blackberry). Denon also included aptX which allows for high quality music playback through Bluetooth. aptX provides CD-quality audio streaming from your Bluetooth-enabled mobile device (on newer Android devices). You will continue to use your mobile device to navigate your music and to view song/artist information.
Note: Due to the differences in Bluetooth technology, some Bluetooth enabled devices may be incompatible, function improperly, or may not support all features when used with the Denon DHT-S514.
Remote Control: The DHT-S514 comes with its own remote control, and it also has the ability to work with your existing TV's remote control so you can control the soundbar and your TV with just one remote. For compatibility with the broadest range of TV types and styles, the DHT-S514 features the ability to re-transmit IR codes via the included IR repeater, which lets you properly position the soundbar in front of your TV and yet still easily control both the DHT-S514 and the TV.
Mounting Options: Denon's DHT-S514 home theater soundbar speaker system offers a variety of mounting options for the active soundbar speaker and wireless powered sub.
Auto Power Modes: DHT-S514 will automatically "wake-up" whenever any of its wired inputs receives an audio signal. Simply turning on your television will also turn on DHT-S514. For Bluetooth playback you will need to turn on DHT-S514 manually using the remote control or top-panel power button. The system will also automatically turn off it it does not sense an audio signal for approximately five minutes.

I don't know if the sound bar to projector will work, that's a question for Crutchfield or Denon. [ James Sep 18, 2015 ]
I have no experience with the kind of routing of sound the prospective customer is referencing. My setup is to use the Denon soundbar to present improved output from the SONY UHD4K TV instead of using the TV existing speakers. My setup in the room also allows me to route the TV sound directly to the stereo preamp input and the output directly into the two mains and surround speakers. Terry [ TERRY J Sep 18, 2015 ]
Hi: Sorry don't know. We only use the Denon sound bar for our Sony 4K 55 inch TV since the TV has such bad sound from the speakers within the TV. Our home theater is completely separate center channel (NHT center) connected to an Arcam AVR-600 with NHT 3.3's for left and right channels. I do like the sound of the Denon sound bar. [ PAUL Sep 16, 2015 ]
Greg, I don't think you would be able to do that. Maybe you should ask the TV manufacturer about that. The sound bar will mound easily to the wall though. [ John Jan 29, 2015 ]
No. It comes equipped for wall mounting or placing on a flat, level surface. [ Mark Jan 29, 2015 ]
No. It's just free standing. You won't be disappointed with the sound. [ RoseMary Jan 29, 2015 ]
With the height of this, it must block the bottom of the tv or at least the remote, no? [ mitch Feb 23, 2015 ]
We have not received any answers from other customers on your question. I would recommend reaching out to an Advisor by phone (1-800-324-9695) or online chat. They should be able to help answer your question. [ Jeff Dec 11, 2014 ] Staff
No. Just turn the soundbar on and hit the bluetooth button and if your device is paired it will sync up. [ Wendy Nov 25, 2014 ]
No you can power up and connect via Bluetooth without the tv on. [ SCOTT Nov 25, 2014 ]
Mr S, No the tv does not have to be on. Get your Bluetooth going, turn the sound bar on with the remote it came with and press the Bluetooth button on the sound bar. [ John Nov 25, 2014 ]
Nope. Just the sound bar needs to be on. [ Jeff Nov 25, 2014 ]
No [ JOSH Nov 25, 2014 ]
No. I use it all the time to just play music without the tv on. [ WILLIAM S Nov 25, 2014 ]
Can you hooka Dvd blue ray player to the sound bar? [ Pat Aug 23, 2014 ]
No, ours is on at least 8 or 9 hours every day and it's just slightly warm. No problems. [ Emil Aug 19, 2014 ]
I have not found that to be the case. I now have two of the Denon DHT-S514 and they are both cool as a cucumber. [ John Aug 19, 2014 ]
