Desktop dynamo

This compact music system is perfect for high-quality listening in your den, bedroom, or office. Denon's D-M39S delivers surprisingly warm, spacious, and detailed sound from CDs, FM radio stations, and your iPod® or iPhone®. It also features Denon's "simple and straight" design concept — short signal paths that preserve signal purity and reduce distortion for clean, accurate audio reproduction.

DM39S with iPod

Lots of listening options, and better sound from your iPod

The D-M39S's built in FM tuner features 40 presets for your favorite stations. The built-in disc player handles standard music CDs, as well as home-burned MP3 and WMA discs. The front-panel USB port means you can plug in your iPod or iPhone® using the cable supplied with your player, and control it using the Denon remote. This direct connection also bypasses the iPod's internal digital-to-analog converter (DAC). That means you'll be sending music signals digitally to the D-M39S's audiophile-quality DACs for richer, more detailed sound. You can also plug a thumb drive into the USB port and enjoy your favorite tunes that way. And with two auxiliary inputs, one analog RCA and one optical digital, you can connect additional components like a DVD player, game system, or the digital audio output from a TV to get better sound.

DM39S system speakers

Small speakers, big sound

Speakers are the weak link for most shelf systems, but not the D-M39S. Each cabinet boasts an ultra-stiff dual-layer woofer that resists flexing to give you deep, accurate bass and clean midrange free of coloration. Soft dome tweeters supply smooth, silky highs with plenty of detail and clarity. You can listen for hours without fatigue. Denon even includes acoustic foam plugs that let you customize each speaker's response to compensate for room placement. Both the speakers and the component block sport large terminals to accommodate audiophile-grade speaker wire, so you can upgrade the wire that comes with the system if you choose.

Each loudspeaker features 1.0" soft-dome silk tweeter and a 4.75" poly-cone woofer with rubber surround. They have a frequency response of 45Hz to 40kHz. The speakers can handle up to 60 watts RMS and 120 watts Peak.

  • 1.0" Soft-Dome Tweeters: The 1.0" soft-dome tweeters feature extended response to 40 kHz, along with wide dispersion and high power handling thanks to the advanced coil and dome air venting system.
  • 4.75" Woofers: The powerful 4.75" woofers feature Denon's Double Layer convex cone technology, which provides deep bass and clear mid-range free of coloration caused by cone flex distortion, and also features air venting for optimum cooling during extended passages of high volume.

Bass Reflex Enclosure: The bookshelf loudspeakers employ a bass reflex enclosure with a rear-firing port for greater efficiency and bass response. Foam port inserts are supplied to seal the cabinet for tighter, more accurate bass. The speakers feature a black wood-grain vinyl finish and a black cloth removable grille.

Binding Post Terminals: Each speaker features two binding post speaker terminals that will accommodate pin-connectors, single banana plugs, and bare wire (up to 14-gauge). The speaker's binding posts are color-coded (red/black) for easy identification between positive and negative.

Multi-Element Crossover Network: The speaker's multi-element crossover network ensures a smooth wide-range tonal balance.

Mounting Options: The bookshelf loudspeakers can be simply placed on a tablet-top, shelf, or stand. The optional PinPoint heavy duty side-grip wall-mounting bracket (121AM40B, sold separately) can be used to wall mount the speakers (the speakers do not feature a keyhole slot or threaded insert).

Very happy with this unit.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The Denon D-M39S is a *great* little unit. I very much doubt that you could get better sound from a device this size at anywhere near this price.

Pros: Attractive, transparent sound. Compact, very well designed and packaged unit. USB port on the front to hook up anybody's portable music player. Analog and digital inputs. No useless bells and whistles; friendly interface. You can add a subwoofer if you feel you need it.

Cons: Sound out-of-the-box is a little bottom-heavy for my tastes; that's fixable by accessing EQ via the remote.

Denon Book Shelf D M39

Written By UgotIT64, Maryland on Friday, November 14, 2014

This replaces Bose 1-2-3. Downsizing. Great unit for my needs....CD, IPOD, FM, movies using Denon speakers. Very good. Only item I read and followed was to upgrade the speaker wires to 16G....I did and cannot believe the increase in beautiful sound....I am in the process of building 30 " speaker stands for the speakers that came with it.

Pros: Sound is great...I have used the CD, IPOD, FM and watching movies good to go. The right size unit for me. The speakers are bigger than I thought....with a sound larger than their SIZE !!

Cons: This is my first week, so nothing.......

Denon D-M 39s bookshelf stereo

Written By Dan, Virginia on Saturday, November 08, 2014

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The sound quality is the best I've heard from such a small, affordable unit. It remains rich and undistorted at high or low volumes. The included speakers are well matched and provide sufficient base so that I am not tempted to add a subwoofer. The FM radio has decent reception even with the included indoor antenna, discs sound excellent, and I also find the sound of a small TV with tinny sound substantially enhanced by the optical connection to this unit.

Pros: sound quality

Cons: none with respect to my intended uses

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Never seen a unit as small as this with such great sound. You don't need a huge stereo system anymore. They always say, great things come in small packages.

Pros: Quality, size and sound

Cons: Like to see paper manual instead of cd & digital display light could be a little larger.

great system

Written By Joe, Carbondale IL on Monday, September 08, 2014

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

this is a great little system that doesn't sound so little. The DM39s system has all the volume you would ever need to fill a small-mid size room with accurate sound. I currently have it set up in my dorm room with the speakers in adjacent corners of the room facing my futon. The sound is crystal clear. I would recommend this system to anyone looking for great quality sound without breaking the bank.

Pros: accurate sound, compact design

Cons: none

Excellent product

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I bought this to replace an older Bose player in my bedroom. Nothing wrong with the Bose, but I just wanted more, much more, which the Denon plus a subwoofer provided. I have the Denon with speakers on a single shelf with the subwoofer on the floor below. The performance exceeds my expectations by a long shot.

Pros: A compact system with great sound performance.

Cons: I am 73 and have arthritis in my hands. I can hardly believe that speakers are still connected the same way they were when I was 20 (wasn't easy even then for a clumsy person like me). Surely it's time to step into the 21st century. Apparently Denon is not alone in this (even though the subwoofer is plug and play!).

Excellent bookshelf system

Written By Steve P, Metro Detroit, MI on Tuesday, August 26, 2014

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Excellent bookshelf system. I bought this system for the USB capability so I could play iPOD tunes for my father's 80th B-day party. I was concerned the unit wouldn't be able to fill a small hall with enough sound (wrong). Along with a Polk Audio (100W) sub woofer, this unit filled the hall with wonderful sound and many (+) comments came back my way on the music choice and sound quality. After the party I've moved this system to my bedroom and wonder why I haven't down this earlier. I recommend this system to anyone looking for compact system that provides big system sound.

Pros: compact, easy to set-up and configure. remote control handles the radio, CD, Aux., and USB functions with ease.

Cons: Could use a little mid-range enhancement. Instead of only bass, treble adjustment; add a mid-range adjustment also.

Perfect compact unit

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

After decades (I'm 77) of components and wire wires wires, I needed a new music system after my old Panasonic finally gave out. After hours of research and pondering, I bought the Denon D-M39S. It suits my needs perfectly, it's compact, yet provides great sound. Regardless of the price or the convenience, I could never tolerate a unit with poor-quality sound. I considered a Yamaha and an Onkyo because of their lower prices, but never really stopped eyeing the Denon because of the consistent praises for its sound.

This Denon is easy to set up, and has easy instructions for using the remote and operating the system in general.

Pros: Wonderful sound. Compact elements. Easy setup.

Cons: Speaker wiring a bit hard to use, partly because the speaker terminals are so close together.

Cons: none whatsoever

Delighted with our buy

Written By Alizoo, Houston, TX on Tuesday, June 17, 2014

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

It was when I was in the car and hooked up my iPod to the car stereo I realized that things had to change! The quality was so good I was reminded how were fed up I was with the flat, dull sound from our Bose iPod dock. Plus, we had gone for years without anything to play our CDs on and I decided it was time to release our music from their boxes. So after a bit of research and reading lots of reviews (and thanks to everyone here who wrote such detailed, helpful and practical reviews) decided to go with the Denon M39S.

It was simple to set up and really quite fantastic to get the first CD on and listen to the wonderful music pouring out into our apartment! I love the button you press to get the music to play as it was recorded. I love the clarity and being able to hear all the instruments and musical details. The space the Denon is set up in pretty big but this hasn't affected the sound quality in my opinion. I need to try and work out how to convert my iTunes and Amazon music libraries into the right format to play them from a memory stick, but right now we are madly in love with our CDs again. And I bought ten new ones this week! It's a joy; for anything from classical to folk to world music.

I was considering buying from Amazon but the speedy delivery which was also free clinched it for us and Crutchfield it was. So it's all good here!

Pros: Great clarity and quality of sound for any type of music genre Neat to the point of cuteness Ready to go ten minutes out of the box Great service from Crutchfield

Cons: I wish it had been available in white!

Great little stereo

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Great stereo, fairly easy to set up. Better sound than a bookshelf system should have.

Pros: good sound, simple interface

Cons: Slight lack of bass...this is not for high volume metal or hip hop...or for filling huge rooms with big volume

i wanred a full size stereo at first, but really didnt have the money, then i decided to buy this denon mini system and i am totally happy with the full stereo sound . i added a subwoofer and it sounds great.

Pros: sounds great, you can hook it up to the tv or ipad, listen to fm radio or cds . does everything a full stereo does for a fraction of the price

Cons: wished it had a surround sound speaker feature

Great so far...

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I have only had this system a few weeks, and I bought it for the specific purpose of using with a turntable. I wanted something small and simple with nice sound, and it has delivered. The reason for four stars is no phono stage. If this system had a a phono stage (especially with the current vinyl bubble), it would be perfect!

Pros: compact, great sound, simple to use

Cons: no phono stage

Big Sound !

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I didn't want to comment on this system until I had it for a while. Well it has been about 1 month now and the sound just gets better every time. When I first pulled it out of the box the high's(treble) were a little compressed but now they are starting to open up. The Bass is deep and not boomy, but this depends a lot on speaker placemen and of course volume. I have mine about 3 inches from the wall but I found I had to still use the foam inserts that came with the speakers to tone down the Bass a little. Presence is good but I wish there was a little more separation between instruments and maybe a bigger sound stage. This also might be due to speaker placement. I have mine about 5 feet apart. For small speakers they are very musical, the best sound is from the CD player, next the iPod dock and last the Radio. I have mine hooked up to my TV so I can listen to Cable radio stations . The sound from cable is excellent. I thought I might need a subwoofer but that can wait. I live in a small apartment and so far the Bass coming out of those speakers is adequate for my needs. As good as the D-M39S sounds it can't beat a real Hi-Fi system though. The presence and the sound stage are just not there and the speakers sometimes struggles with difficult passages. I didn't want to sugar coat anything to get anybody's hopes up, but on a high note this little system can easily compete with some Hi-Fi systems in the $1000 range or lower. I definitely recommend it.

Pros: Nice controls Easy to use remote control Compact Well Made, great quality Sounds great

Cons: Lacks AM radio Can be harsh at times No AC outlet in back only one set of RCA input plugs

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Amazing. Have had many systems over the years and none come close to this one. The speakers that come with it are a perfect match with the power output and have put all my high wattage systems to shame. I use in a 29 x 14 basement and sound is perfect with no need to crank up. I do wish an owner's manual came with it ,rather than DVD, but no worries as set up is easy and crutchfield customer service is incredible. Highly recommend buying this great priced system from crutchfield. Denon DM-39s + Crutchfield = a perfect package indeed!

Pros: Sound , set up, size, customer service.

Cons: No owners manual.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

We needed a unit that had a tuner, cd player, and could serve as a sound system for our TV. After tons of reseach we ordered the Denon. It arrived within 3 days, safely packaged. The set up took about 20 minutes. Great clear sound though we did add a subwoofer. BTW, we ordered by phone and the Crutchfield sales rep was able to answer tons of questions. Thank you for a nice unit and a pleasant shopping experience.

Pros: please see above

Cons: really benefits from a subwoofer

Very happy with my purchase. Item arrived in excellent time and was packaged very well. Was easy to set up and use.. Has excellent sound.Highs and lows come through crisp and clear.. Would recommend this product to anyone who needs a compact unit with outstanding sound and very reasonable price.

Pros: Great value easy to set up and use outstanding sound compact

Cons: none

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

excellent system for the money, just like the other reviews....perfect system for a small room or office, not a big living room for outputting a tv, like a home theater, in a large room. SW is not necessary, has good bass response even with a direct, non-enhanced output of the tv

Pros: you won't be disappointed, good value for the money

Cons: not so good documentations, on the c, which is typical

Love it

I had been searching for a small stereo for several weeks when I came upon the Denon D-M39S. This unit is attractive and has great sound. It fits perfectly on my office shelf. I am very pleased! Eventually, I may add a Polk Audio subwoofer- no hurry though, as this stereo has wonderful sound as is!

Pros: Attractive, compact, and easy to operate.

I wanted a small apartment sized system that i could hook a turntable into, but i also wanted a quality system. Denon delivers that in this small package! And I opted for the Denon turntable to match and the whole setup just come together. Def an A+

Pros: Size Sound & Looks

Cons: The optical in option does not work with my TV, It only works through My DVD.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Wow, was I please with the purchase of the Denon D-M39S. I had looked at several bookshelf stereo systems both on the internet and at local box stores. I was not impressed with anything I saw or heard within the price range. Finally, I called the people at Crutchfield and asked for advice. I had chosen three systems for purchase and two were more expensive than the Denon. Much to my surprise, I was advise to try the Denon D-M38S. When it arrived at my door, I found it easy to set up and when I turned it on, Wow! What a great sound for so little money and it looks great too.

Pros: Great sound, good looks, reasonable price.

Cons: I suspect that systems costing much more might provide a better sound, but why spend the money?

Great little system

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I love this system! It satisfied every need I had - compact enough to fit easily into the space required (by my wife) and it sounds fantastic! I have used every feature on it except to turn it up past half-way. The small room I put it in completely fills up with sound at far less than half volume. It's very easy to use and the remote is very handy. The only downside I can find is that I can't figure out how to control my TV volume from my TV remote but I think that's a short-coming of my TV rather than anything with this unit. You should get one!

Pros: Everything you want - nothing you don't and it's a Denon so it will probably outlive me.

Cons: the remote is just a tad bigger than it really needs to be. not a big issue.

Exactly what I wanted. Doesn't have an AM band but wouldn't use it anyway. Primarily for CDs and the occasional trip to the FM radio. A little smaller than I imagined, but the sound is clear and full of bass. A quality unit. I like the fact it's not all plastic.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This little guy will exceed your expectations. The small form factor is to be commended and the DAC through usb is a phenom. Have this set up with Cambridge s30 and using the stock spkrs elsewhere. The SDB really shines through and treble can adjust as high as possible without sounding tinny. Occasionally I'm surprised to notice how loud they are playing due the the lack of aural distortion. No hesitation to recommend.

Pros: Form Factor, clarity , mid punch (probably accented by s30) inputs, simplistic design short path circuitry, option for direct source from cd

Cons: lack of RCA stereo input x2, will need a switcher for the modern day multimedia cluste, nut much beyond that,

I bought this receiver as a way to improve my sound from my 55 inch TV in my basement. The sound quality is excellent and I believe it will be even better once it breaks in. If you are looking for an alternative to a sound bar for 2.1 channel sound you should consider this system.

Pros: excellent sound and flexibility for different sources

Cons: no blue tooth but considering buying an input adapter

Cons: the CD holder does not have a button on the wand

Excellent sound in a small footprint. Sound balanced and effectively fills a large room. Dynamic range excellent, on CD, FM, satellite radio, and USB. You could not do better for $$$.

Pros: All around outstanding performance.

Cons: CD player a little sensitive if disc is not immaculate. USB port in front, which is not ideal.

Great Little Desktop system

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Awesome little system. Great sound, takes up little space. FM Radio reception is much better than I expected. Sounds great with my I-pod. Easy to use and operate. Multiple sound modes to find your favorite sound. I don't like a lot of bass and many players focus on bass. This one has a nice mix and was easy to find a mode I like.

Pros: Great sound. Takes up minimal space. Easy to use. Really impressive FM radio reception. CD sounds good.

Cons: Speakers could be more powerful. But still sound great.

GOOD SYSTEM FOR SOMEONE WHO IS LOOKING FOR COMPACT SIZE WITH QUALITY SOUND.

Pros: HAS OPTICAL DIGITAL INPUT SO YOU CAN PLAY YOUR TV THREW IT.

Cons: THERE IS NO GRAPHIC DISPLAYS AND THE CLOCK DISPLAY DOES NOT STAY ON WHEN UNIT IS OFF.[ NO BIG DEAL]

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The mini-system sounds excellent in my wife's art studio. Music played?: classical, folk, easy jazz. I recommend it; no regrets. Seems to provide a lot of bang for the buck and fits on a typical storage shelf.

Pros: Easy to operate. Comfortable, full sound in a 200 sq.ft. residential office area. I connected a 12" Velodyne Bassmatrix subwoofer to it . Overkill, this system doesn't need a subwoofer; the Denon speakers provide plenty of response.

Cons: 'Wish it had HD radio for the local NPR broadcast. Otherwise, perfect for it's operating environment.

Versatile System!

Written By HB, Oregon on Saturday, August 17, 2013

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

After shopping the market for sound enhancements for my new HD TV, I came across this gem of a compact system. Not only does it have a digital optic input for sound from my TV, but it has a subwoofer out so with the addition of an inexpensive Yamaha powered subwoofer, it really cranks. The versatility is further measured by full ipod compatibility, AM/FM, and a CD player. It isn't surround sound, but it is great full stereo sound and most folks are really impressed with the depth and clarity of the sound. For less than $500 (including the powered sub I added), it far outshines similarly priced equipment from Bose, ZVox, and any other sound bar system I tested. I highly recommend it, especially if you are looking for the smallest possible footprint for your system. In a small room, you may not need to add a sub, but even a small 8 or 10 inch powered sub adds plenty of oomph for a larger open space. In fact, I like this sound solution so much I have two of them!

Pros: Price when compared with sound bars and home theatre systems Versatility of music/TV sound combined iPod compatibiity/integration Compact size

Cons: None

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Denon is a nice system. It's very small, but it sounds good. I was expecting a bit more from reading reveiws, but I don't have carpet, so I'm blaming that for the bit of the lack of depth. I have to turn the bass off when I turn it up loud cuz it gets very distorted. I was hoping to be able to have a loud bass sound, but that is not the case. I am happy with it though.

Pros: Small

Cons: Can't set your own channels, (has auto preset). Clock does not display. Can't have bass on when volume is turned up

Good Things in Small Package

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This rating reflects what this product is intended to be: a small, beautiful, all-in-one solution for a shelf in a small room. The sound is full and complete, it does everything well, and the controls are very intuitive. I can tell you that it's FM reception with a decent outdoor antenna (Terk TV55, good luck finding) is stellar. I have one in the basement work area and its predecessor (RCD M38) in my office. I whistle while I work...

Pros: Small and beautiful.

Cons: Not for large rooms. Not really a Con - but simply a matter of physics. Be wary of bad reviews - they may be the result of inappropriate room application.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I'm very picky about my audio. I've tried various t-amps and micro's due to space restrictions. I finally decided to see what those UK boys where so excited about with this micro. I bought this expecting to return it, but hoping I wouldn't have to. I did not want a networking receiver so options where limited. Adressing the problems with previous models. One being a hiss sound through the speakers. I did not try tone controls, but set to flat, no hiss detected. Second is the headphone hum. The only thing I had to test this was with my sennheisser ear buds. I experienced no hum with the ear buds. Lastly is the problem with the volume step up being too low or too loud. Yes, the volume is not a smooth alps potentiometer, but I find it to be exceptable with no major jump ups. Now for the sound. I intially hooked up my psb alpha b1's right out of the box. It sounded thin and veiled, but I let it play while I bathed my son. I came back a half hour later and discovered the source direct button. What a difference! The sound was much cleaner, with more body, but sounded bright. Five hours later the sound was amazing, the top end smoothed out just right and the bass opened up nicely. I also tried the included speakers and a pair of energy cb-5. I preferred the alphas, a great match. The included speakers are solid and should make most happy. The ipod hooked up through the dac is nice if the music files are quality. Try the unit, it's great.

Pros: Good sound Decent power Functionality

Cons: Cd tray is alittle flimsy Volume pot not as smooth, but acceptable

I'm not clear about the question. The unit plays music CDs; the output is sound. It cannot play back text which is visual. [ GEORGE  Aug 29, 2014 ]
I have not been able to use this unit for the application you are asking about. My intent when making this purchase was AM/FM CD MP3. I did not realize, it's almost impossible to purchase anything with AM anymore. [ JAMES M  Aug 26, 2014 ]
Yes and that's primarily how I used it. I burned CD's on my computer and played them on the Denon as it was at a second home. [ ROBERT  Aug 26, 2014 ]
I forwarded your question to an Advisor and they responded with the following: 1. This THD is considered normal for a smaller mini Hi Fi system. They rate the power at a higher distortion level to get the higher wattage rating. The good news is the amplifier is perfectly matched to power the included speakers. 2. It is tough to hear the difference between THD rating especially when they are below 1%. If you would like to discuss further you can contact an Advisor directly by phone (1-800-324-9695) or online chat. [ Krissy  Jun 21, 2014 ]  Staff
There is a button on the remote control between the column and channel selectors. It says tone on it. Pressing this repeatedly will select between bass, treble, and balance. It will state which mode on the display. Use the arrow buttons to select what you want for each. Its pretty simple when you get the hang of it. Good luck [ KENT  Feb 27, 2014 ]
using SDB button on remote push once and observe SDB function is on press again to select parameter to be adjusted, example bass ,treble, balance, then use right and left buttons in center of remote to adjust parameters.. Note..... all adjustments including which parameters has to be started within 5 seconds or display will revert to regular display. Hope this helps [ Marvin  Feb 26, 2014 ]
Our Denon system has such good balance we have not needed to adjust treble and bass. We have not inspected the unit for adjustments but there are no knobs or buttons on the front panel for adjusting. Hope this helps. Dwayne. [ Dwayne  Feb 26, 2014 ]
Sorry Larry, don't know - bought for my girlfriend and it's at her house. But look on the remote - others things we couldn't find buttons for on the unit (radio tuning) we found on the remote. [ Cris  Feb 26, 2014 ]
I have not adjusted bass/treble but if I had to I would put in the disk that came with unit and follow what and how is said. sorry I can't be more help.... [ George  Feb 26, 2014 ]
Larry, There is a way to do it using your remote and I think options, then adjust treble and base with the remote. Also, there is a big difference with direct and non-direct modes. Direct modes are not enhanced and have less bass, and require little adjustments. It's a beautiful clear sound. The other is enhanced and exaggerated, in my opinion. I am on vacation now but read through the manual which is a pdf on the cd that came with it and try out these different options I don't know how old you are - I am 67 - not like the old days with the bass and treble knobs! [ RICHARD  Feb 26, 2014 ]
Double push the"SDB/Tone" Button in the middle of your remote. [ BRIAN  Feb 26, 2014 ]
On the remote, there is a button - SDB/TONE - that gets you into the menu where you can scroll through and increase or decrease bass and treble. I don't find it very intuitive but once you fumble about with it for a few tries, you get the hang of it. [ Davison  Feb 26, 2014 ]
Wonderful sound. Easy to operate. There is a USB outlet, but there is not a docking station. I have a black set. Silver, I do not know. The system is solid and I would recommend for ease of use. Good luck. [ DEBORAH M  Feb 09, 2014 ]
I believe the DAB is a European system . It's like our hd radio in America. I wasn't able to find this system in silver and yes it does handle the iPod Classic :). I enjoy this little shelf stereo and I've had no problems with it. [ NATHAN  Feb 09, 2014 ]
Hello Again Lynne, I offered the above information, although accurate, I did not answer your question. The answer is yes as stated by others, there are both analog and digital inputs on the unit. I have a Bluetooth receiver connected with the analog inputs and it works just great. [ CRAIG W  Feb 04, 2014 ]
Hello Lynn, I bought this unit for as you can probably guess, special constraints. I added a subwoofer and am almost pleased with the sound in a 10X10 room. When I initially purchased the unit, I tested it out in a 10X20 room and the sound was "lost." Also, I am not particularly fond of the controls, but they do work once learned. With that said, if you are looking for a small unit that sounds almost good with the subwoofer and you are going to use it in a very small room, this Denon could work for you. Honestly though, I have heard lower priced "boom boxes" in the $200 price range that sound better. The only problem is, they look gaudy and take up more space, but they do get louder. There is no real concern except for time, for Crutchfield has always stood behind what they sell and have a great return policy. They are one of three big internet shops that I will deal with and have always been pleased. Good Luck!!! an happy listening [ CRAIG W  Feb 03, 2014 ]
I'm sorry, I don't know. I have no experiennce w/ XM radio. [ THOMAS  Feb 03, 2014 ]
Yes. The Denon has an analog input setting. This will let you play the output of your portable XM radio, if that unit has a headphone jack. The Denon has a pair of phono jacks at the rear of the unit. You'll need a connecting cable - easily gotten from, say Radio Shack, with phono plugs at one end - for the Denon - , and a 1/8" stereo plug - for the XM - at the other. By the way, I'm pleased with my Denon.Best wishes. [ RICHARD  Feb 03, 2014 ]
The reason I chose the Denon over current Bose is its great sound, simplicity and compact size. I have owned a Bose system - this one is more versatile , easier to set up and sounds great! [ J. CRAYTON C  Jan 05, 2014 ]
I found the sound to be very similar to a Bose Cinemate when I added the powered subwoofer. Whether it is better or not will depend on how you like your sound. I define it as better simply because this system fits my needs by adding full iPod compatibility which I can control with the remote, AM/FM, and a CD player... all in addition to playing my TV/DVD through the digital optical input. In short, if you already have a great stereo setup then you might prefer something more dedicated to home theatre sound, but I was in need of replaing an old stereo setup as well as TV sound and found that for the combined cost of $500 (I spent $100 on the subwoofer), this system met all my needs. I have a similar set-up in another smaller room and found no need for adding the subwoofer. Hope that helps. [ HARLEY  Dec 28, 2013 ]
I do not believe there is a comparable Bose system. The Denon is in my view a very solid performer and delivers excellent value for the money. [ ERIC S  Dec 27, 2013 ]
Not sure what model you are comparing this with, but at this price point it is a great sounding unit I think would be hard to beat. Highly recommended. [ DANIEL J  Dec 27, 2013 ]
I did not do a side by side comparison but I never liked the Bose base system because it is not controllable, you get what you get. It's somewhat artificially created in my opinion, and due to this, and the fact that I'm a bit of a purist, I think it's very overpriced. That said, its a personal thing, if you're impressed with it then you just may be pleased with it, but keep in mind, you have no control. If possible, do a side by side comparison, and of course use various pieces of music, take your time. [ DAVID M  Dec 27, 2013 ]
Absolutely, for several reasons. For one, I listen to harder hitting rock type music. The Bose systems are more geared toward classical/ easy listening type music, so if you like hard hitting bass, the Bose system is less than optimal. Two, the Denon unit by itself already produces pretty good bass, but you have the option to add an additional subwoofer. I have done this with my Denon system and it greatly enhances the listening experience. I went with an Infinity 8", 150 watt sub. Third, even with the addition of the sub, my complete Denon system is $500 dollars cheaper than the Bose acoustic wave system w/ the CD changer, and is capable of reproducing the type of music that I listen to much more accurately, in my opinion. [ WILLIAM M  Dec 27, 2013 ]
My sister has one of those Bose Wave Music System radio/CD players (tho I'm not sure if it's a "III" or an earlier iteration). I would say that the Denon D-M39S sounds better than that particular Bose. But that Bose is the only Bose system at a comparable price that I've heard. I have Bose original equipment radio/CD/speakers in my car (2007 Mazda 3), and they're great. Bottom line: the Denon D-M39S seems to me to produce a good sound for the money, but not the best sound at any price that I ever heard. I hope this helps. [ THOMAS  Dec 27, 2013 ]
Yes. I am not a fan of Bose products. [ DAVID  Dec 27, 2013 ]
The nearest Bose Sytem that would compare to this "bookshelf" system by Denon is the Bose Wave radio. I personally think the Denon has better sound and functionality than the Bose Wave system. In addition, the Denon isi $300 cheaper. [ BRAD  Dec 27, 2013 ]
I thought the sound of the Denon was better - truer and fuller. The Bose has a nicer look. [ CHANDRAN  Dec 27, 2013 ]
yes, the Denon speaker are larger and puts out quality sound. Also, I like the ability to place my speakers to get the best sound in a room. I have owned Denon products before and have always been satisfied with their quality. [ LESLIE H  Dec 27, 2013 ]
