DM40S with iPhone

Lots of listening options, and better sound from your iPod

The D-M40's built in FM tuner features 40 presets for your favorite stations. The built-in disc player handles standard music CDs, as well as home-burned MP3 and WMA discs. The front-panel USB port means you can plug in your iPod or iPhone using the cable supplied with your player, and control it using the Denon remote. This direct connection also bypasses the iPod's internal digital-to-analog converter (DAC). That means you'll be sending music signals digitally to the D-M40's audiophile-quality DACs for richer, more detailed sound.

You can also plug a thumb drive loaded with music files into the USB port and enjoy your favorite tunes that way. And with three auxiliary inputs, one analog RCA and two optical digital, you can connect additional components like a DVD player, game system, or the digital audio output from a TV to get better sound.

Small speakers, big sound

Speakers are the weak link for most desktop systems, but not the D-M40. Each cabinet boasts an ultra-stiff dual-layer woofer that resists flexing to give you deep, accurate bass and clean midrange free of coloration. Soft dome tweeters supply smooth, silky highs with plenty of detail and clarity. Both the speakers and the component block sport large, high-quality terminals to accommodate audiophile-grade speaker wire, so you can upgrade the wire that comes with the system if you choose. Denon also included a built-in, high-performance heaphone amplifier for richer, more dynamic sound when you want to listen privately.

Audio Section

30W + 30W Amplifier w/ Robust Power Circuit: The Denon D-M40S is equipped with a 30 watt x 2-channel high power amplifier for serious HiFi quality sound. The Denon D-M40S is also equipped with robust power supplies that feature dual power transformers to provide a stable supply of electric current, resulting in lower impedance handling and greater power output.

Simple & Straight Circuit Design: The Denon D-M40S gives you high quality sound based on the "Simple & Straight" concept. Circuitry is uncomplicated, signal paths are short, and all adverse influences on sound quality have been minimized. The circuit design and the way the chassis is built ensure the sound you hear is faithful to the original performance.

Triple Noise Reduction Design: In an audio component where various circuits, boards, and wire layouts can influence each other, it is not possible to obtain satisfying specifications or sound simply by strengthening the power amp circuit. Denon has therefore eliminated three sources of noise to ensure that the sound is as clean as possible. Distortion from the input selector, electronic volume and power amp has been suppressed to improve the signal-to-noise ratio and produce an even smoother, dramatic sound.

  • Short signal paths, to optimize sound quality and minimize noise.
  • Thorough separation of digital and analog sections.
  • Precision signal ground circuit, to preserve signal purity.

32-Bit/192kHz DAC: The Denon D-M40S HiFi component system employs a high-precision 32-bit/192kHz DAC (digital-to-analog converter) to reproduce high-definition sound.

Bookshelf Loudspeakers: The included bookshelf loudspeakers have been designed with Denon HiFi craftsmanship and European sound engineering. For best performance a high quality 4.75" midrange/midbass driver has been combined with a high-definition 1" tweeter and a crossover network with selected components inside a bass reflex enclosure to reproduce smooth, natural sound.

  • Two-Way Driver Design: The bookshelf loudspeakers feature a two-way driver design with a 1" tweeter and 4.75" midrange/midbass woofer. The soft-dome tweeter feature extended response to 40 kHz, along with wide dispersion and high power handling thanks to the advanced coil and dome air venting system. The powerful cone woofer feature Denon's Double Layer convex cone technology, which provides deep bass and clear mid-range free of coloration caused by cone flex distortion, and also features air venting for optimum cooling during extended passages of high volume.
  • Bass Reflex Enclosure: The bookshelf loudspeakers employ a bass reflex enclosure with a rear-firing port for greater efficiency and bass response. Foam port inserts are supplied to seal the cabinet for tighter, more accurate bass. The speakers feature a black wood-grain vinyl finish and a black cloth removable grille.
  • Binding Post Terminals: Each speaker features two binding post speaker terminals that will accommodate pin-connectors, single banana plugs, and bare wire (up to 14-gauge). The speaker's binding posts are color-coded (red/black) for easy identification between positive and negative.
  • Mounting Options: The bookshelf loudspeakers can be simply placed on a tablet-top, shelf, or stand. The optional PinPoint heavy duty side-grip wall-mounting bracket (121AM41B, sold separately) can be used to wall mount the speakers (the speakers do not feature a keyhole slot or threaded insert).

Audio Adjustments: The Denon D-M40S offers various audio adjustments to tailor the sound to your music taste.

  • Optimizing Filter: An optimizing filter suited specifically for the properties of the included loudspeakers can be activated.
  • Tone Control: The D-M40S feature separate bass and treble tone controls (-10 to +10dB) for adjusting the tone of the system to your taste.
  • Super Dynamic Bass: The Super Dynamic Bass (SDB) circuit produces powerful bass sound even when the volume of the system is low.
  • Source Direct: The Source Direct feature is provided for turning off the tone control and SDB circuitry to make the system's response naturally flat.

Audio Outputs: The Denon D-M40 offers binding-post terminals to connect a single pair of speakers, a mono-sub output to add a powered sub, and a front-panel headphone jack for private headphone listening.

  • Speaker Outputs: The D-M40S is fitted with four binding-post speaker terminals that will accept pin-connectors, single-banana plugs, and bar wire (up to 14-gauge).
  • Subwoofer Output: The Denon D-M40S features a mono-RCA subwoofer output for connecting a power subwoofer to the system for additional bass.
  • Headphone Output: The D-M40S is equipped with a front-panel 3.5mm headphone output for private listening. Once a headphone is connected, the system's speakers will automatically mute.

Yes, I have my XM radio system connected.

There is a model of this product available which has DAB compatibility. It is called the Denon D-M40DAB. The regular Denon D-M40D It seems to just be available in England etc. However, I have does have what you want if it has the AB in the model number. I would think you could request this model and someone like CRUTCHFIELD would get it for you. Besides that question, this product is great. We have it in a large living room with only the two speakers that come with it. No sub woofer. Sounds really nice. Hooks easily to the TV. Looks nice. Unobtrusive. Super pleased with it and Crutchfield.
richard w  Feb 17, 2017
Q
This system is AM/FM but Crutchfield doesn't say it has AM. Why the oversight?
bernard  Jan 02, 2017
1 answer
A
First off, I gave this system as a gift to my girlfriend and she totally enjoys the Denon DM40. It is the audio output for my TV, DVD and XM radio. If I recall, the system does come with an AM antenna that can be used for AM reception. If you're into it, I think XM radio carries AM and FM stations and provide the clearest reception. I hope this response helps.

Q
I have a Region 2 DVD player with HDMI, a PlayStation III and IV. I also have a Samsung Series 8 from 2010 and it features ARC otherwise known as "audio return channel." Does having that benefit me in any way? The TOSLINK offers a nifty convenience for both gaming systems. It's hard to hear my television at times. I think this will be remedy that. Any suggestions for bookshelf speakers would be greatly appreciated. I like Klipsch, so far.
anthony  Sep 21, 2016
1 answer
A
Your TV's ARC features wouldn't be of much use in this case since the Denon D-M40 doesn't include any HDMI connections. If you would like to discuss this system (or any others) in further detail, feel free to contact an Advisor directly by phone (1-800-324-9695) or online chat. I hope that helps!

Q
Do you have a product that will allow the Denon D-M40 to play into wireless Bluetooth headphones?
anthony  May 05, 2016
1 answer
A
I don't know much about Bluetooth. i use a Mac computer. Our Denon is hard wired, and we don't use headphones. That said, it is really a remarkable piece of equipment. Even with just the 2 speakers, it is amazing. Being able to play off a flash drive, and easily attaching to the TV makes it great. Good luck.
richard w  May 07, 2016
Q
Can you connect an XM radio to this unit?
michael  Dec 12, 2015
7 answers
A
Not sure what connections an XM radio unit has but the Denon has typical rca plugs and also 2 optical plugs. I would imagine it would work but you would have to double check the xm unit connection options.

I regret that I am not able to answer this question. Possibly an individual in the Crutchfield technical support group can provide this information.
myron j  Dec 14, 2015

I have had this unit for several months. Got it when it first came out. I am using it to play CDs, listen to the TV, play music off of flash drives recorded off of my computer, charge my iPhone. It is great. I do not have a woofer on it, so it the music is best at lower volumes (really super) without an emphasis on bass. There is a place to connect one. I do not have Sirius radio. I don't know exactly how sirius works for connecting. You can hook the unit to an iPod, iPhone, or iPad, etc. I believe that would be the way to play them. I WOULD GET ON THE INTERNET WITH SIRIUS - LIVE CHAT - NO DOUBT CAN ANSWER YOUR CONCERNS. Good luck - I think it is a great unit. I don't like the wireless things - not reliable. This old technology unit is really terrific. (If you are on Windows only, I guess I wasn't much help.)
richard w  Dec 13, 2015
A
Very Good question. It does not seem to be compatible. I am not sure how XM radio is connected. It does have USB port for smart phones and tablets but no special connection for XM radio. It also does not show up on the Sirius compatibility chart. However, since it does have connectivity via USB port to smart phones and tablets, I would think one way around it might be to have XM radio on one of your smart products and then play it through the speaker system on the DM40. Seems to me that would work but I may be wrong.
linda  Dec 12, 2015
A
No you can't.. also it has no Aux. But it does have input for iPhone. Other than that pretty good system
ron  Dec 12, 2015
A
Yes, but not directly from the satellite. The least expensive way is with a Sirius XM Internet subscription. I purchased a bluetooth adapter from Crutchfield and play XM through my laptop or tablet. Better stations on Sirius XM internet.
linda  Dec 12, 2015
A
Yes, You have to get a home docking kit and contrive a way for the little antenna button to see the south sky. The docking kit has a 3.5mm plug on one end and RCA connectors on the others. The bigger question is why bother? The Denon is a piece of junk.
j seth  Dec 12, 2015
Q
Does the unit play ALAC format? The specification mentions AAC lossless format, but by my knowledge AAC is not lossless; AAC uses the same file extension (mp4a) as ALAC (ALAC is true lossless format).
dorin  Aug 30, 2015
1 answer
A
I forwarded your question to an Advisor and they responded with the following: This Denon does not read ALAC files and they are indeed lossless but AAC files are what is described as "lossy compression". The ALAC filename extension ".m4a" . AAC is more like MP3. If you would like to discuss further you can contact an Advisor directly by phone (1-800-324-9695) or online chat.

Q
Is there compatability with zune or android phone?
meredith  Aug 11, 2015
1 answer
A
Hi Meredith - the Denon D-M40 has a USB port on the front that accepts flash drives, I-phones, etc. The unit accepts MP3, MP4 audio, WMA, FLAC, WAV & AAC audio files. If you download your Android device with MP3 files you should have no problem. You can search the web for Android-compatible audio files. I believe the Zune app on a Windows phone also supports MP3 and MP4 audio. Again, check the web to be sure. The Denon is a really nice unit, btw. Make sure you place the speakers on foam pads (Auralex, Auray, etc.) for the best sound. The amplifier in the Denon can also drive larger speakers, if you want to upgrade. I'm using NHT SuperOne 2.1 speakers and the sound is incredible. Another suggestion - get a good digital-to-analogue converter (I'm using a Dragonfly) as the typical sound card in most computers is not real good. Hope this helps and good luck.
