Great DVD player

I have used the 1930CI for a couple of weeks now and have found it to be an exclellent product. I bought it mainly for the 1080p upconvert and it ability to play SACD/DVD-audio. The setup was fairly easy. The only minor complaints I have about it are a seemingly flimsy disc drawer and it seems loud when accessing tracks.
Another note - this is the 3rd scratch & dent item I have purchased from Crutchfield in the last 6 months. All items basically looked like they had been just opened and retaped. All bags/packaging inside the box were all still sealed and everything was in excellent condition. These are a great value and Crutchfield is an excellent source for audio/video products.

Electronics are constantly changing, so I am constantly changing my electronics. I purchased a Sony DVP-NS90V about 6 months ago because of the up conversion to 720p. Then wouldn’t you know it, they came out with one that up converts to 1080p. I had to have one and based on the quality and reputation of Denon it was easy to make a choice. I received it about a month ago and hooked it up right away to my Samsung 56” 1080p rear projection television. I have the sound going thru an Onkyo TX-SR703 receiver and all equipment is plugged into a Panamax M5100-EX home theater power conditioner (highly recommended for protection). The Denon 1930CI performs great except for one thing. It will not play all recorded disks. I record all my original movies onto recordable DVD’s, with kids around it’s a good way to keep your originals in good shape. Depending on which program you use to record them some disks work recorded with one program, but not with another(disks play but the screen will freeze up like when a disk is dirty). I troubleshot all these utilizing my Sony DVD player and Crutchfield tech support. Unfortunately I didn’t want to re-record all the movies, so I had to return it. Again Crutchfield tech support and customer service is the best out there. I picked out a different DVD player (Yamaha) and they sent it out right away and told me I didn’t have to send the other one back until the new one arrived. I would not deal with another company when it comes to electronics.

Great Buy

My old DVD player went on the blink, so it was time to pick up a new one. I did a great deal of research and decided I would wait to make the leap to Blu-Ray (which I think will win the current format war). I've been trying to step up to more sophisticated equipment lately and I have to say, this player (also my first Denon purchase)was a great choice.
I'll be the first to admit, I was wary of the "upconversion" feature of this player. Since I bought my plasma (Panasonic TH-42PX60U), I've become an HD junkie. The upconverting puts it almost on par with pure HD. Blu-Ray will be nice, but in the meantime - this player does a terrific job. I think the upconversion function only works via HDMI, so keep that in mind if you're considering the purchase.
I agree with a former post, the tray is a little flimsy.

Upconverting DVD player
Written By

I bought a Pioneer Elite DV-46AV DVD player. I played a few DVDs and let me tell you, most of them looked amazing! They were clear, crisp, and had a good saturation of colors. The only exception would be any older DVDs, where they did a poor/quick job in converting the video. Any CG movie (Final Fantasy, Finding Nemo, Cars, Dinosaur, Robots, Ice Age, etc.) looks fantastic (even sharper than regular movies)!
Im into lots of animation. If you have newer DVD releases of Disney favorites, youll love the detail, beauty, and colors.
The Pioneer setup menus and remote were designed well (well placed buttons which glow in the dark). The Denons was mediocre.
Unfortunately, I did have some problems with this player. Sometimes, when I would play a DVD, it would split the picture in half (top half of the picture would appear on the bottom half and vice-versa). Other times, it would display a thin green line on the left side/edge of the TV. This would be resolved by simply powering off and back on. So I returned it to Best Buy.
I decided to try the Denon DVD-1930CI.
The Pioneers setup menus and remote were designed much better than the Denon.
The features were almost the same on both players.
The one thing that differentiated the Denon from the Pioneer Elite was that the Denon could upconvert standard DVDs to 1080P. The Pioneer only upconverted to 1080i.
The Denon has a Pure Direct mode which makes listening to audio (CD, DVD-Audio & Super Audio) sound good.
I noticed how Denons disc tray feels flimsy.
Ultimately, the Denon has great sound & video, which is the most important requirement!

Great Denon for the price

I purchased this player along with a Samsung LN-S4096D 1080p LCD TV and couldn't be happier. The upconversion is the first I have seen that truly works well, Faroudja is THE name in chipsets to have folks.
I am using a HDMI cable to direct-connect the player to my Samsung TV- I haven't tried the component video mode yet.
The 1930CI can't do miracles- if a movie has a lot of grain in it, it will still have grain in it. For example, the newest HD-mastered version of "The Great Escape" looks very grainy on the intro titles (unrestored), but once the actual movie starts, colors and black level are awesome (movies have 4x the resolution of DVDs) and the Denon excels at eliminating or minimizing artifacts and noise in the picture.
The remote is pretty intuitive, although it would fit smaller hands better IMO as I have trouble using my thumb to reach the often-used arrow buttons while holding the remote.
My only negative comment on the Denon 1930CI is that once in a while the player gets rather loud when accessing a DVD. This varies in length and there doesn't seem to be any pattern as to why it does this occasionally. It isn't noticeable once the sound is playing. It is only a minor quirk in what I consider a superb DVD player for the money.
