Denon

Our take on the Denon DVD-1940CI

The high-value Denon DVD-1940CI boasts more sophisticated video processing and more versatile high-res audio options than other players in its price class. Its advanced video processor removes the imperfections that can appear when film-based images are converted to digital video. The resulting picture is smoother, more natural-looking, and more filmlike. If your HDTV has an HDMI input, this player can upconvert standard DVDs to better match your set's high-resolution display. The '1940CI can even output video signals at 1080p to complement today's popular 1080p TVs.

Music fans won't be left out in the cold. This versatile DVD player lets you enjoy highly-detailed sound with Super Audio CDs and DVD-Audio discs. With Denon's digital bass management system, you can tailor the sound from these high-resolution audio sources to fit your system and speaker configuration. High-quality digital-to-analog converters give you exceptional sound from all of your music discs, including regular CDs and those loaded with MP3 and WMA files.

Features

Overview: The Denon DVD-1940ci is a single-disc, progressive scan, universal DVD player that will play DVD-Audio and SACD.

Multi-Format Player: The Denon DVD-1940ci is a "universal" player, which offers playback of both ultra high-resolution multi-channel audio formats: DVD-Audio and SACD (Super Audio Compact Disc). Both formats, with their wide frequency responses, capture subtle details that make music sound richer and more real.

Disc Compatibility: This unit can play the following types of discs: DVD-Video, DVD-Audio, Video CD, Audio CD, and Super Audio CD (SACD). In addition, this unit is compatible with CD-R, CD-RW, DVD-R, and DVD-RW discs, as well as MP3, WMA, JPEG, and DivX files recorded on CD-R, CD-RW, DVD-R, or DVD-RW discs.

Automatic Detection of Discs: This player automatically detects if a loaded disc is a DVD-Video, DVD-Audio, Audio CD, Super Audio CD, MP3, WMA, JPEG, or DivX.

Dual Discrete Video Circuit: The DVD-1940ci uses a 12-bit 108 MHz video D/A converter for interlaced video and a 11-bit 216 MHz D/A converter for progressive video to ensure highly accurate playback of delicate, low-level video signals and give you a vivid picture that is faithful in every detail. One D/A converter is used to process Progressive signals and one is used for Interlaced signals to eliminate mutual interference between the two types of signals.

Digital Video Upconversion (Video Scaler): This unit features a built-in high quality video scaler that is capable of outputting video signals in a variety of HD formats. You may set the unit to output 480p, 720p, 1080i, or 1080p video signals via the HDMI connector.

Component Video Progressive Scan Output With Faroudja's DCDi: The component video output can be set to provide progressive or interlaced signals. When set for progressive output, the DVD player provides 480p signals featuring Faroudja's patented Directional Correlational Deinterlacing (DCDi). This technology applies new motion adaptive deinterlacing that prevents the introduction of motion artifacts and jagged edges from video signals that originated from video cameras (such as with sporting events, live camera feeds and music videos). The result is a sharper, noise-free picture with finer details. Video images are displayed with optimum naturalness and color reproduction with less flicker and fewer motion artifacts than traditional interlaced scanned pictures.

CI (Custom Integration): Custom Integration is Denon's certification to custom installers that models marked with the "CI" stamp have advanced connectivity and control features often required for custom home integration and theater applications using premium control systems.

2 MB Buffer Memory: This unit is equipped with a 2 MB buffer memory to ensure that both picture and sound are played without interruption when the DVD disc shifts from layer 1 to layer 2, or in the rare event of a pickup dropout.

MP3/WMA Playback: This unit will play MP3/WMA files recorded onto CD-R, CD-RW, DVD-R, and DVD-RW discs using the ISO 9660 level 1/level 2 or Joliet formats. MP3 files with a compression rate from 32-320 kbps and WMA files with a compression rate from 48-192 kbps are supported. Each disc can have a maximum of 255 folders and 999 files.

JPEG Disc Playback: This unit will play JPEG files recorded onto CD-R, CD-RW, DVD-R, and DVD-RW discs using the ISO 9660 level 1/level 2 or Joliet formats. JPEG files with a resolution between 32 x 32 and 6300 x 5100 are supported. All JPEG files on a disc can be played back in a slide show. The slide show interval can be set to 5 or 10 seconds. During slide show playback, you can rotate an image 90-degrees clockwise or counterclockwise. Each disc can have a maximum of 255 folders and 999 images.

Kodak and Fuji Picture CD Compatible: This DVD player has been tested and certified by Kodak and Fuji to ensure that an enjoyable viewing experience is provided when viewing your picture CDs.

DivX Playback: The DVD player can play back DVD-R, DVD-RW, CD-R, and CD-RW discs recorded in DivX format. When a DivX disc is inserted in the player, the file list will appear automatically on the TV screen. The number of tracks will also be displayed on the front panel of the unit. The unit supports all versions of DivX video (including DivX 6) with standard playback of DivX media files. The DVD player will recognize up to 255 DivX folders and 999 DivX files up to 2GB.

TV Type: You can select between NTSC, PAL or Multi to match your connected TV's video system.

TV Aspect: You can select for the DVD player to output the following aspect ratios to match your connected TV.

  • 4:3 Letter Box: black bars appear on top and bottom of screen
  • 4:3 Pan Scan: full height picture with both sides trimmed
  • 4:3 Squeeze: use when your TV screen is too large horizontally a 16:9 Wide setting
  • 16:9 Wide: use when a Wide-Screen TV is connected

Picture Control: Picture Control adjusts brightness, contrast, color, gamma corrections and sharpness of the specific display. You can adjust these levels from -6 to +6 in 1.0 intervals. The default setting is 0 for all picture controls.

Black Level Control: This feature allows you to make dark portions of the video brighter.

Various Playback Modes: The player features the following playback modes.

  • Still Mode: pause mode
  • Fast Forward/Reverse: DVD speeds (2X, 8X, 20X, 50X and 100X), CD speeds (2X, 8X, and 30X)

Picture Zooming: During play, when you press the Zoom button on the remote control, you can enlarge the picture by 2x or 4x. You can then use the cursor buttons to move the enlarged viewing area up, down, to the left, or to the right.

Camera Angle: You can change the camera angle of certain DVD discs that contain scenes which have been shot simultaneously from various angles.

Markers: Up to 10 points on a DVD or CD can be stored in memory and easily recalled. Markers are automatically cleared when the power is turned off or when the tray is opened.

Resume Function: The Resume function allows the player to remember the point where you stopped playback, so you can easily resume playback from the point stored in memory. The stopping point is cleared if the tray is opened or the stop button is pressed a second time.

Parental Lock: You can set the parental control level to limit playback of discs which may not be suitable for children. You can choose from 8 different levels and protect your setting by a personalized 4 digit password.

Audio D/A Converter: This unit has dual 192kHz/24-bit digital-to-analog converters for exceptional sound quality reproduction.

Digital Audio Output Capabilities: You can select an LPCM output setting of On or Off. When On is selected and you are playing a DVD recorded in 96kHz, the signal is down converted to 48kHz/16-bit before it is passed through the digital outputs. When Off is selected and the unit is playing a non-copy-protected DVD recorded in 96kHz, a 96kHz/24-bit signal passes through the digital outputs. If the DVD is copy-protected, the digital signal is automatically down converted.

Speaker Configuration: To tailor the output of the 5.1-channel jacks to the bass handling capabilities and configuration of your speaker system, left and right front, center, left surround and right surround speakers can be set to "Large", "Small" or "None." The subwoofer can be set to "Yes" or "None." The speaker distances can be set between 0 and 60 feet in 1-foot steps. You can also adjust the output level for each speaker between -12dB and 0dB in 1dB steps.

Bass Enhancer: Set this function to "On" for sound output on the bass-woofer channel when a 2-channel audio source is played back. This function is effective only for the 5.1ch Audio Out jacks.

Virtual Surround: Virtual Surround simulates multi-channel surround sound using only two speakers. You can choose one of the following modes: 1 (natural effect), 2 (emphasized effect), or Off.

Pure Direct Mode: The Pure Direct mode turns off the analog video signals, HDMI signal, and front panel display, resulting in improved sound quality.

DRC (Dynamic Range Control): The DRC function compresses the range of sound volume. This feature is available only on the discs that are recorded in the Dolby Digital format.

Dialog Speed: You can playback in a slightly faster (1.3x) or slower speed (0.8x) while keeping the sound quality as in the normal playback. Dialog speed is available on discs recorded in the Dolby Digital format.

Dimmer: You can choose from the following display brightness settings: Bright, Dimmer, or Auto. In Auto mode, the display dims only during playback.

Screen Saver: The screen saver program starts if there is not activity at the player or its remote for more than 5 minutes. The brightness of the display is darkened by 75%. The program is deactivated when there is any activity.

Auto Power-Off: If the unit is in stop mode for approximately 30 minutes, it will automatically switch to standby mode.

Wireless Remote: The DVD-1940ci comes supplied with a full-function IR wireless remote control designed to operate only the DVD player. The remote allows for direct title, chapter and track accessing.

Denon DVD-1940CI

Written By John, Fairbanks, AK on Wednesday, August 05, 2009

I have had this DVD player for about a month and I think it is great. I mostly use it as a CD player, but movies have been great too. It is simple to use and uncluttered. I can also control it from the front of the player (without the remote). The remote control is pretty big (long).

Mixed feelings

Written By Benjamin, Houston, TX on Wednesday, May 27, 2009

I bought this Denon DVD player to replace an Onkyo that was no longer loading and unloading disks properly. I'm using it on a 720p LG 46" DLP TV. I originally had it hooked up via the component video outputs like I had with the Onkyo. The picture was clear, but all the colors where very faded and muted looking. It looked "washed out" or "grayed out." I then hooked it up using the HDMI output to the DVI input on the LG (no HDMI input on the LG). I fidgeted with several settings and finally got the picture to my liking using the HDMI "Enhanced" setting, which was not the default. So it looks good now, but it took me a long time to get to it, and I had to buy an HDMI to DVI cable. I'm not sure what the deal is with the component video outputs, but if you plan to hook it up with the component video outputs, I don't recommend this unit.

This just might make me an Audiophile again...

Written By Mark, Makawao, Hawaii and Canmore, Alberta on Tuesday, May 26, 2009

Having given up on any chance of Audiophile quality from CDs long ago, I've succumbed to the connivence of listening to MP-3's exclusively - iPods everywhere! I never sat down and listened to music anymore, it felt like a forgotten passion - not just by me, but by everyone I knew. That was until I did a renovation job on my Maui house and upgraded the Home Theatre system in the process, which is now the high end of the low end stuff on the Audio side of things. Got a couple floor- standing speakers for old times sake and they blew me away running off my Harmon Kardon receiver (clean power). So, I broke out my CD collection again - yup, still sounds like crap alright.

Then I thought... wait a second, what about DVD-Audio and SACD?! - I never checked that out... So, I got this player and have been buying up all the discs I can get my hands on and I've had nightly listening sessions ever since! Eric Clapton Slowhad on SACD just came in yesterday - what a treat it was to listen to that again on something other than a CD!!! And, I'm really digging some of the 5.1 surround mixes.

So, now I gotta know... How does it stack up against vinyl? If it stacks up favorably on an Audiophile system. Well, I guess I'm officially an Audiophile again.

In the interim, I'm buying another one of these players for my place in Canada cause one thing is for certain regardless, they are light years better than ordinary CDs!!!

Terrific Value & Great Performance

Written By chuckk9032, California on Thursday, April 23, 2009

If you are not interested in Blu-Ray, this unit is a great performer, and the current pricing makes it particularly attractive. I bought a couple of Denons to replace my old units because they were failing every 9-12 months. In addition, my A/V systems are controlled by Universal Remote's RF control units and they had erratic control issues. I hoped the Denons would solve remote control issue. Happily, they worked flawlessly upon installation. Now I'm hoping they also last longer than the old units.

Amazing picture for the price

Written By Eric, West Newbury, MA on Wednesday, April 15, 2009

Overall, I am really pleased with this unit. It's a definite upgrade from the mediocre unit that I'd been using previously. The picture is fantastic and it's a steal at this price. The only reason that I didn't give it five stars is that I bought two of them and one was DOA. Crutchfield took care of it quickly but it was still a hassle. I'd had a similar type of problem with a Denon receiver a few years ago (powering itself off after only about 10 seconds). I'm hoping that it's just an anomaly rather than a quality control issue.

Denon DVD-1940CI

Written By Conrad, Deland on Wednesday, April 08, 2009

Bought because of incredible price and wanted to buy from Crutchfield because of great prior experience. At first was was disappointed in the light weight of the machine. However when played, it equaled the Sacd sound of the $1000 Marantz it replaced { it was seizing up}. I was using a $2000 early Toshiba Dvd player and the Denon had a much better picture. Sparky at Crutchfield was extremely helpful in my decision.

Good DVD player for a GREAT price

Written By Terry, Wilsonville, Or. on Tuesday, April 07, 2009

Tried the Yamaha S1800 first but this Denon has a smoother picture and just as good as sound through HDMI or analog (must use with SACD). Have not tried an audio DVD yet. The Denon doesn't have as nice as build quality as the Yamaha or as user friendly of a manual or on screen menus (that's why the 4 stars) but the PRICE WAS KILLER! Got TWO Denons and an optical audio cable for the price of the Yamaha - I just could not pass that up!
Five stars for Crutchfield.

Excellent value

Written By Jason, Lehigh Valley, PA on Sunday, March 29, 2009

The Denon 1940CI does exactly what I expect in a good DVD player. Picture is very crisp, interface is clean, unit looks great in the rack.

At the current discounted pricing, it's a heck of a value and legit alternative to BluRay.
