Our take on the Denon RCD-N7

by Marshall Chase
Denon

The sound solution for the less-is-more movement

On one hand, you want something that sounds much better than an iPod® or Bluetooth® speaker. On the other hand, you want something less complex than a surround sound system. You'll find your sweet spot in a stereo receiver. In addition to being easy to set up and use, many now offer Internet radio and other network music options. Add your music source and two speakers, and you're ready to relax and enjoy your tunes. You might even connect your TV for improved sound with movies and shows.

Because you love listening to music
It's everywhere you are. The CD player in your old truck. The flash drive at work. On your iPod® at the gym. When you finally get home after a long day, wouldn't it be great to have something that plays it all? That's why Denon came up with the RCD-N7. Gather up your CDs, hunt for the thumb drive in your coat, lasso that iPhone® ringing on top of the dresser and bring them all here. Pop something and relax. An optional firmware upgrade gives you Apple AirPlay® — super-convenient access to your iTunes® library, with control from your iPhone, iPod touch®, or iPad™.

The more you get together, the happier you'll be
What about all the music files on your computer? Just hook up the 'N7 to your home network — either with a wired connection or via Wi-Fi — and problem solved. Go beyond your own collection of songs with Internet radio or any number of online music services (subscription fees may apply). One thing's for sure. You won't get bored.

Unleash your iTunes® music — free AirPlay® upgrade
Apple's exciting AirPlay technology lets you access your favorite music from your iPhone®, iPad™, iPod touch®, or your iTunes library on your computer using this Denon receiver. You'll be able to control iTunes and see music information, including your album art, track titles, and artist info on your compatible Apple device. First you will need a firmware upgrade. Go to Denon's website for instructions on how to activate the upgrade. Requires a wireless home network. Receiver requires wired connection to the router.

Pair the RCD-N7 with Audioengine's high-performance P4 speakers for a killer-sounding desktop system that looks great, too.

Great...when it works.

Written By skangirl, Finger Lakes, NY on Wednesday, May 15, 2013
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

My biggest mistake? I waited too long before trying the USB port. After compact size, the ability to use a flash drive was the most important feature I wanted in the device. When it works, it's great, BUT, when I try to use the USB port to play music from a flash drive, it works only intermittently. I have updated firmware, done several resets, and made many calls to Crutchfield and Denon. A flash drive will work perfectly, then, an hour or a day later, it won't work at all. It goes through steps 1 of 4 and 2 of 4, and then back to 1 of 4, never loading the drive's contents. If I remove the drive and reinsert it, it may (or may not) work.

On my 4th or 5th call, Denon support people told me that the USB port is designed only for Apple products! When I said that is impossible, they said that it could only handle flash drives of 8GB or smaller. (That doesn't explain why it would work sometimes but not at other times and there's nothing in the manual about drives having to be <8GB.) In my experience, the intermittent performance seems unrelated to drive capacity. Then I was told that my music files must be corrupted. Again, that doesn't pertain to intermittent functionality. I believe something is loose inside, but Denon refuses to allow for that possibility.

I didn't want to rush with a bad review, but I was appalled by the tone of 2 Denon support people today, one of whom insisted on reading sections of the manual to me, even though I told him I'd read it.
Pros:
Compact size. Good features WHEN THEY FUNCTION AS INTENDED.
Cons:
Intermittent USB port functionality. Bad attitude of Denon tech support people who say that the unit isn't designed to accept anything other than Apple products via the USB port and/or it can't handle flash drives that are bigger than 8GB and/or my files are corrupted and/or I'm using an improper music file format...even though the files & port function perfectly...sometimes. Crutchfield lifetime support isn't useful when the unit fails and they don't have a solution.

Denon RCD-N7

Written By Bob, Hoopeston, IL on Sunday, February 10, 2013
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I'm not an expert on what is and what is not good for home stereo. After reading several reviews, I picked this to fit my budget. I'm really happy with the receiver -simple to hook up (other than the wireless network) and easy to operate. Coupled up with Klipsch speakers and subwoofer has been an enjoyable decision.
Pros:
Compact but strong enough to fill the room with sound.
Cons:
None really.

Terrific Performer

Written By Hal NYC, New York City on Saturday, November 17, 2012
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Excellent compact unit provides everything a serious audiofile would need in one small box. AM/FM of course, plus Internet Radio, built-in CD player, concealed iPod dock, and ability to play music from computer, iPad, or iPhone via Apple AirPlay. Now I can stream music remotely from any such device and listen via two sets of speakers. Front panel display is sharp and easy to read, better than others I have seen. And the sound is great, better than from my former HiFi receiver.
Pros:
All you need to play music from a variety of sources in one compact box. Even the Denon manual is well written and easy to understand.
Cons:
Downloading the "available" Apple Airplay software is not simple and is time consuming. I needed telephone guidance from Denon tech support. This feature should be built-in since the download was free. So, why try my tech skill set and patience?

Great sound, patience needed in setup

Written By dmndave, Denver, CO on Wednesday, July 25, 2012
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Sounds great with CD, Pandora, Iphone, internet radio and Airplay. Setup can be a little fiddly due to having to enter SSID / key for wireless using the remote ( same issue arose entering userid / password for Pandora ). Allows for both bare wire and banana plug speaker connections but I would suggest using banana plugs as the connectors are close together and can be a little cramped for bare wires ( especially 12 gauge )
Pros:
sound, easy of use
Cons:
needed two upgrades to get system working and Airplay installed.

Does not come in the box with all functions

Written By Teddypig, Wilmington, NC on Friday, January 27, 2012
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The Denon RCD-N7 out of the box does not come with Apple Talk. You have to hunt for three pieces of information. Two machine id tags and an Mac addy info screen.

Then you have to download the firmware update.

Then you have to download the Apple Talk software.

Then it works. But I would not give this to anyone not experienced with basic networking skills they would be lost.

So it does eventually function as it's promo material states what they do not explain is what a freaking headache it is to setup.

So two stars that's all it gets.
Pros:
Apple Talk and Pandora what a combo for a medium size receiver to have!
Cons:
Setup is a pain in the butt!

Denon RCD-N7

Written By John, Charlotte, NC on Tuesday, January 24, 2012
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Very nice piece of equipment. I got this for my wife's office and she loves it! Lots of great features with Internet radio, CD, DLNA access, Air Play, aux inputs, and iPad/iPhone control with the Denon application. Using the iPad application, sound/tone controls are easy to use. Would be great if there was a full featured Web app for configuration, but existing menu structure works fine for setup. I would highly recommend this product.
Pros:
Great piece of gear and a long list of input options. Denon iPhone/iPad app is great as is the Air Play support. Good audio quality.
Cons:
Do not see an option for Sirius/XM internet access, but to be honest, have not seen the need with Pandora.

Great compact unit!

Written By Rich N, Taos, NM on Monday, January 23, 2012
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

A great compact unit. Solid sound quality with my Polk Tsi 200's. No need for a subwoofer. Internet connectivity went smoothly (with my son's help!). Everything I expected. Strongly recommended.
Pros:
Compact, excellent audio quality, easy to set up, easy to use. I'm also confident with the Denon label.
Cons:
None. Exactly meets my needs. A bit pricy, but does what it's supposed to do.

Pricey - but nice

Written By Rpuffd, Seattle, WA on Saturday, December 24, 2011

This unit seems very well made even if made in China. Kind of odd for a Japanese company. Unit connected to wireless was a breeze although entering special chars took a few tries to figure out. Firmware and AirPlay upgrades were as documented and a breeze. ITunes on my desktop computer magically found the device and I can play to the Denon from my ITunes, way cool. So far, I am very impressed and have only touched the tip of the iceberg. I just hope this unit lasts as long as the Denon unit it replaced (15+ years old).
Pros:
Wireless, small, sturdy, cool display.
Cons:
No HD Radio. Had I researched this before buying, I would have passed this unit by, an oversight on my part. Price is steep and not many discounts out there on the web so full price is about all you will find.

My teenagers are in awe!

Written By Jon R., Lancaster PA on Thursday, March 10, 2011

I have the garage of my dreams but no radio signals to listen to. Metal walls
and high efficeincy flourescent lights stomp on both AM and FM frequencey.
After five years of aggravation, I was steered to Crutchfield. The adviser listened
patiently and asked the right questions. His recommendation was to run cat-5
wire and use the internet I am already paying for! I was not aware of such
radios. He also assured me that I would enjoy the sound quality. Incredible!
Everthing works as promised. No qualms whatsoever! Money well spent and
problem solved! My nineteen year old says he wants one also. Thank you!
