DVD/Receiver Features
System Components:
The Denon S-301 DVD Home Theater System consists of the three main components:
ADV-S301 DVD Player/Receiver, the DSW-S301 Powered Subwoofer, and two SC-S301 Speakers.
iPod Input: The ADV-S301
features a front panel iPod/iPod Photo input, allowing you to play music files
from your iPod on the S-301 or view a slideshow of images from your iPod Photo
on a TV connected to the S-301. When connected via the supplied iPod cable, the
unit's on-screen display shows a menu that looks and operates like the iPod's
screen. You can control the iPod using the unit's front panel controls or the
supplied remote control. You can also charge your iPod when it's connected to
the S-301. Note: This input is not compatible with iPod Shuffle.
Portable Aux Input: If you
don't own an iPod, you can use the front panel portable auxiliary input to play
music from your portable audio player. An optional stereo mini cable is required
to connect your portable unit to the DVD Player/Receiver.
USB Input: A mass storage
device can be connected to the front panel USB input to play MP3, WMA, and WAV
files. The S-301 is compatible with mass storage devices in the FAT16 and FAT32
formats.
DVD Playback: The built-in DVD
player is compatible with DVD-Video, DVD-R, DVD-RW, DVD+R, and DVD+RW discs (NTSC and PAL);
DVD-Audio, SACD, Audio CD, CD-R and CD-RW; MP3, WMA and JPEG files recorded on CD-R
and CD-RW; Kodak Picture CDs; and Video CD. Some playback functions include:
- Repeat: Chapter, Title
(DVD); Track, Disc (CD, VCD); Track, Group (DVD-Audio)
- Program: Up to 20 tracks
(DVD-Audio, SACD, CD, and VCD) can be programmed to play in a desired order
- Random: Track (SACD, CD, VCD
only); DVD-Audio will play randomly within a group
- Zoom: 1.5x, 2x, 4x (DVD,
VCD)
SACD:
Unlike PCM based technology (CD/MiniDisc/DVD/Audio DVD, etc.), Super
Audio CD is based on Direct Stream Digital (DSD)
encoding, which does not require decimation and interpolation filters. DSD is
much simpler and enables a 1-bit signal to be recorded directly. DSD encodes
music at 2,822,400 samples per second (64 times that of standard CD) allowing
you to hear sound with incredible detail and clarity. DSD combines the
advantages of digital recording with the best characteristics of analog sound.
HDCD Decoder: This unit is
equipped with an HDCD (High Definition Compatible Digital) decoder which allows
20-bit data to be converted into the 16-bit data of current CDs with no loss of
sound quality. HDCD-compatible discs are automatically recognized, and playback
is optimized by Denon's digital technology to provide a superior
high-definition, low distortion sound quality.
MP3/WMA/JPEG Playback: The
ADV-S301 can play MP3, WMA, and JPEG files recorded onto CD-R and CD-RW discs in
ISO 9660 format. MP3 files should be recorded between 32 and 320 kbps (128 kbps
recommended), and WMA files at 64 to 160 kbps. Folder and file names of up to 31
characters can be displayed. Discs with up to 99 files per folder or up to 999
total files and folders can be played. JPEG files up to 2048 x 1536 can be
displayed. When playing JPEG files, a slide show can run automatically with the
interval adjustable from 5 seconds to 15 seconds in 1 second intervals.
Dual Discrete Video Circuit (DDVC):
Isolated video circuits for interlaced and progressive signals improve video
precision.
DCDi By Faroudja: The S-301's
Progressive Scan technology is powered by the latest DCDi by Faroudja FLI-2310
decoding engine for the finest processing of film, video, graphics, or
mixed-mode content.
Aspect Ratio Selection: You can
select the aspect ratio of the DVD video output according to the type of TV
being connected: Wide (16:9), LB (4:3 letterbox), and PS (4:3 Pan & Scan). A three-way switch
is provided on the back of the unit.
Video Conversion: The DVD
player/receiver can up-convert incoming composite video signals to S-Video or
component video and incoming S-Video signals can be up-converted to component
video or down-converted to composite video signals. This conveniently allows you
to connect the unit to your TV with only one type of video connection, no matter
what the input signal is.
Dolby Virtual Speaker: The
ADV-S301 uses Dolby Virtual Speaker technology to create a virtual surround
sound field using only two speakers for the front channels, allowing you to
experience sound as if surround speakers were actually being used. The virtual
surround speakers are accurately positioned at 105° to the left and right of the
listener. Dolby Digital and DTS multi-channel programs are played according to
the producer's intentions with sound from the center, rear left, and rear right
channels directed to the center, left, and right "virtual" speakers. Two
listening modes are available: Reference and Wide.
Cinema EQ:
The Cinema EQ function gently decreases the level of extreme high frequencies,
compensating for overly bright movie soundtracks. Select this function if the
sound is too bright.
Speaker Setup:
The setup menu has several speaker adjustments to optimize your sound. The
distance from the listening position and output level is adjustable for each of
the three speakers. The room damping has three settings; low (hard walls and
floor), high (thick curtains and rug), and mid (neither extreme). The location
of the front speakers is set to on wall, on shelf, or free standing (on floor
stand).
Dolby Headphone: Dolby
Headphone is a 3D sound technology for achieving surround sound using regular
headphones. Dolby Headphone simulates speaker playback in a room and positions
the sound sources to the front or the sides, outside of the head, achieving a
sound similar to that of a movie theater or home theater. The Dolby Headphone
mode can be used with multi-channel sources (Dolby Digital and DTS), as well as
stereo programs. When playing a 2-channel source you can choose Cinema or Music
mode. You can also bypass the Dolby Headphone circuit for
normal stereo playback.
Night Mode:
When listening at lower volumes, turning on the Night Mode improves dialog
intelligibility.
AL24: Like most of Denon's home
theater receivers, the ADV-S301 uses AL24 Processing to further reduce
quantization distortion and senses the nature of the digital data being input
and interpolates the data to faithfully replicate the original analog waveform.
AL24 operates when PCM, MP3 or WMA data is input.
Picture Quality Setting:
There are five memory positions for programming picture settings. Each preset
holds settings for contrast, brightness, sharpness, tint, cross color
separation, white level, color density, chroma delay, Digital Noise Reduction (DNR),
and gamma correction.
Audio Delay Setting: When
watching a DVD or other video source, the picture on the monitor may seem
delayed with respect to the sound, in this case the audio delay can be adjusted
to synchronize with the video.
Personal Memory Plus: The unit
automatically memorizes the surround modes and input modes selected for each
source. When the input source is switched, the modes set for that source last
time it was used are automatically recalled.
Direct Mode: The receiver has a
Direct Mode which plays back analog input signals without DSP processing. When
turned off, the analog input signals are converted to digital to undergo DSP
processing.
AM/FM Tuner: This
system's AM/FM tuner allows you store up to 60 AM or FM station
presets so that you always have easy access to your favorite stations without
having to tune them manually each time. A name of up to 8 characters can be
entered for each preset station. Features that can be received from FM stations
broadcasting RDS signals include: Program Type (PTY), Traffic Program (TP),
Radio Text (RT), and Clock Time (CT).
Auto Power Off: When the
receiver is in the DVD mode and the DVD is stopped, the power will automatically
turn off if no operation is performed for 30 minutes. This feature can be turned
off.
Auto Power On: When the power
is off and you press the play button, the power turns on the the disc plays.
Timer Section: The
ADV-S301 has a built-in clock with three separate timer
functions:
- Every: The Every
timer can be set to turn the power on and off at the same time every day.
- Once: The Once timer
allows you to turn the power on and off one time.
- Sleep: The Sleep timer can
be set to turn the power off after a preset amount of time, 10, 20, 30, 40, 50, 60, 90, or 120 minutes.
Tone Controls:
The unit has +/-10dB bass and
treble adjustments in increments of 2dB. The
Super Dynamic Bass function provides a bass boost when activated. You can also
defeat the tone controls if desired.
Display Sensor/Dimmer:
When activated, the illumination sensor can detect the amount of brightness in
the room and automatically adjust the brightness of the display. When
deactivated, you can change the brightness of the display manually from the remote control to one of
three brightness settings, or turn the display off.
Remote
Control: The system is controlled by the supplied RC-1005 wireless remote
control. In addition, the remote can control multiple brands of TVs, DBS
satellite receivers, and cable boxes. The remote has a unique design with a
streamlined top panel with frequently used buttons such as power, play, and
volume controls. Additional buttons are located on the back of the remote behind
a flip-open panel. Dimensions: L=9.171", W=2.085", H=0.813".
Help Mode: When the "Help"
button on the remote is pressed, an on-screen display tells you what your
options are based on which components are plugged in, and what kind of disc is
in the DVD player. Easy-to-understand options such as "Watch DVD",
"Listen to radio" and "Listen to iPod" let you choose what you want.
Speaker Features
Satellite Speakers: The
video-shielded SC-S301 satellite speakers feature two 3.15" (8 cm) cone
mid-bass driver and a 0.8" (2 cm) tweeter in an acoustic
suspension enclosure. Each speaker includes a wall-mount bracket and an
easel-type table-top stand. The wall-mount bracket has two "keyhole" slots, and
mounts the speakers approximately 5/16" from the wall. With the table-top stand
attached the speakers have the following
dimensions: Width=5.241", Height=15.930", Depth=5.615". If you
prefer, the satellites can be wall or ceiling mounted using aftermarket
brackets. There are three threaded inserts (M5) on the back of the speaker in a
horizontal line, one in the center and one 1-3/16" (30mm) to each side.
Speaker Terminals: The supplied
speaker wires have proprietary terminals on each end. The terminals can be
removed and placed on other speaker wires if desired. A 2mm Allen wrench is
provided for loosening and tightening the set screws on the terminals.
Subwoofer: The DSW-S301
subwoofer has a down-firing 8" cone driver in a bass reflex enclosure, powered by a 140
watt amplifier. The subwoofer provides the power for the entire system,
including 70 watts to each of the satellite speakers, and AC power to the DVD
player/receiver via the system cable.
