Our take on the Escort Passport 8500 X50 Blue

With improved detection range on all radar threats, the Escort Passport 8500 X50 radar detector makes it easy to stay informed. The "V-tuned" detector utilizes a state-of-the-art microwave receiver and proprietary software for ultra-high sensitivity on conventional and "instant-on" radar, and offers even more range on K-band and Ka-band radar than the Passport 8500. Plus, the ultra-bright blue display provides crystal-clear readouts and sharp text.

It arrives in an Escort travel case, with a quick-release windshield mount, built-in earphone jack, and coiled cord — it's a great traveling companion.

The Passport 8500 X50 features an AutoSensitivity mode, which automatically reduces false alarms while maintaining high sensitivity. With a SpecDisplay, you can see the actual frequency of the radar signal. And the "ExpertMeter" display identifies band and relative signal strength on up to 8 signals simultaneously.

The on-board digital signal processor rapidly determines the level of threat. "EZ Programming" lets you store your preferred settings for nine different functions. The unique power cord even has a built-in alert lamp, pilot light, and mute button.

Features

VG2: This unit uses a SmartShield VG2 Immunity to make it invisible to radar detector detectors.

Radar Range: The Passport 8500 X50's new "V-Tuned" radar receiver provides extreme detection range on all police radar; conventional and "instant-on" radar, including the new POP mode radar threat, X-Band, and up to 50% more range than the original Passport 8500 on the all-important K and Ka bands. Digital Signal Processing (DSP) provides maximum range, with minimum false alarms.

AutoSensitivity Mode: Passport 8500 X50's patented AutoSensitivity mode intelligently distinguishes real threats from other known sources of radar, virtually eliminating false alarms.

New High-Performance Laser Protection: The multiple high-performance laser sensors provide maximum police laser (lidar) warning, with superior off-axis protection. For the ultimate in laser protection, the Passport 8500 X50 may be paired with the Laser Shifter ZR3.

Ultra-Bright Matrix Display: The blue matrix display uses 280 individual ultra-bright LEDs to provide crystal-clear band and signal strength indication, plus text messages for programming. The display can be adjusted to one of the following brightness settings: Maximum, Medium, Minimum, or Dark.

3 High-Resolution Meter Modes: The Passport 8500 X50 provides 3 types of meter displays: standard bar graph, ExpertMeter, and SpecDisplay. In ExpertMeter mode, the Passport 8500 X50 can identify band and relative signal strength on up to 8 radar signals simultaneously. In SpecDisplay mode, the radar detector will show you the actual frequency of the radar signal.

EZ-Programming: This radar detector provides 9 driver selectable features that allow you to customize how alerts and indicators are presented to you. These include adjustments to the power indicator, power on sequence, signal strength meter, automute function, audio tones, city mode sensitivity, display brightness, dark mode, and which bands are active.

Auto Mute: After the initial audible alert, the volume is automatically reduced, so you need not manually mute the sound. This feature can be defeated.

Mute Button: Once an alarm sounds, it can be silenced using the mute button.

Highway/City Button: The highway and city mode can be switched manually or set to automatic.

Dark Mode: In the Dark mode, the radar detector will dim the display and not show visual alerts.

Voltage Meter: One of the power indicator options is a voltage meter, this provides a continuous, digital readout of your vehicle's battery voltage and warns you if the voltage rises above 16.5 volts or drops below 10.5 volts.

Laser Ports: There are front and rear Laser sensors for complete coverage.

SmartCord Cigarette Lighter Adapter: The cigarette lighter plug has an alert LED that lights even when the unit is in the "Dark" mode and a mute button in case the unit is not within easy reach.

Earphone jack: There is a standard 3.5mm earphone jack on the right side of the unit.

Memory Retention: Memory retention eliminates the need to reset your preferred feature settings each time your unit is turned on/off.

Mounting: The detector is mounted to the windshield using the included adjustable bracket. A visor clip is also available directly from escort.

Radar Detector

Written By LeeM, GRand Rapids, MI on Wednesday, May 25, 2011

Well, I own a very fast Corvette, and have a radar detector for that and am happy. However, I work on the road and drive rental cars enough that they upgrade me to hot cars, like Camaros and Infinity G37s. So I bought the Passport. It is portable, with a case and works fine. I am pleased.

Escort Passport 8500 X50 Blue

Written By EdgarHou, Houston, TX on Tuesday, January 18, 2011

The best radar i have ever owned.
I managed to get this for the holidays and I am glad I waited. My old radar finally gave
out on me after 12yrs and it was time for a new one. I did my research and chose the
Escort passport 8500 x50. I really enjoy the brilliant cool display. I recently went on a trip
to nearby San Antonio and it paid for itself already. I would
highly recommend this product.

a great detector

Written By Robert, Houston, TX on Tuesday, November 30, 2010

this is a great product. i bought my passport 8500 about 3 years ago. (after getting a ticket in my brand new car) it still works as well now as it did when i first bought it. i had this in my Challenger and now in my Ram. it has worked very well in both. being so close to the city i have a long drive to and from work every day. so my passport gets a good work out. it goes off long before i see any cops. and i completely trust my passport, if it isnt going off i'm not slowing down. (i have sped past cops in the past and never got a ticket) not that i am suggesting you do the same. with as many tickets it has saved me from it was well worth the money. i highly recommend this detector

Reliable and and on duty

Written By Steve, Houston, Tx. on Wednesday, October 13, 2010

I have two of these detectors. One red and this one blue. They are identical but the blue
is a bit more subtle during an alert. Both are reliable and require very little adjustment
especially in the "auto" mode. For longer highway trips I would recommend
the "highway" setting. It's longer range. Also Escort has updated their software to
eliminate, or reduce, false warnings for Laser which is becoming more common in non
speed enforcement applications.

Escort Passport 8500 X50 Blue

Written By , Charleston, SC on Sunday, May 30, 2010

I've only had the x50 for a few days now but so far I am highly impressed. It does give the
occasional false alarm but the automute function does a good job so that you are not
constantly pressing the mute button. I would like to see the window suction cups be built
a little bit more sturdy. I feel like with one good pothole the x50 could be in the floor, but
so far even the largest potholes and bumps haven't phased it. As far as the performance
goes for the model, I could not be happier. It has already paid for itself by keeping me
from getting a ticket and the cars that happened to be following me. I would just suggest
turning on the POP function because the unit comes from the factory with it turned off as
the default setting. All in all a great unit and I love the blue leds. I would definitely
recommend the x50 to a friend.

Escort

Written By , Vacheria, La. on Monday, January 18, 2010

I'm not a great writer, but I just want to say this was a great buy and works great.
I took a trip to Fl. and it found the radar even around curves.
One of the best buys that I've made in a long time.

Worked fine until it died

Written By Jason, WV on Tuesday, February 24, 2009

The Escort is great until it stops working and emits false alerts. I bought two from Crutchfield at the same time and they worked well for 2 years before they started giving full alerts on Ka band despite there being no radar around. The detectors started doing self-calibrations more frequently as they got older and eventually said "service required," after they were out of warranty, naturally. Also, when I put my car in park the laser detector goes off. Fun! I believe I have 2 defective units, so caveat emptor.

Forget Belltronics STI

Written By Sam, Worcester, MA on Wednesday, October 08, 2008

Must have for commuters. I have owned and used the top three. I sold my Beltronics after using the Passport 8500 X50. I wish I just bought it first.

Very accurate and extremely reliable which is a must when commuting on the Mass Turnpike everyday (Worcester to & from Boston). Don't waste too much time researching radar detectors. I did it for you. This is the one.

Very Good Radar Detector !!!

Written By Tomek, Maspeth, NY on Tuesday, May 13, 2008

I bought this radar detector over 2 years ago. And I honestly have to say it has saved me over 10 speeding tickets. Several times a year I take long drives upstate NY and this is a must have device for highways. It works well in all weather conditions. It "sees" cops before I see them. It has a small bit of false alarms. It detects electronic road signs, which could be a bit annoying. I got one speeding ticket (got it dismissed) with it but it was because cop had laser radar - Passport 8500 has laser detection but it will alert you when cop gets your speed. As you probably know there isn't anything against cops with laser detectors. And unfortunately more and more cops are buying them now. Overall this is one excellent radar detector.

Great Radar Detector

Written By Dan, Austin,TX on Tuesday, December 18, 2007

This is a great radar detector. i have owned it for about 6 months now, and it has never steered me wrong. it is super accurate in highway mode, and picks up those pesky cops before i ever see them. this thing has saved my butt numerous times. i really like the nice blue display (yes i paid more for the display), it matches the gages in my '07 civic perfectly. i love this radar detector, and would recommend to anyone that is looking for a nice, accurate radar detector.
