Our take on the Escort Solo S3

Want the added peace of mind that comes with an uncluttered view of the road? Escort's Solo S3 cordless radar detector makes it easy to keep a low profile by eliminating the cord that would normally hang on your windshield. It also protects you with long-range laser and all-band radar sensors, as well as unique alerts for safety signals that keep you informed of road hazards. VG-2 immunity means you won't get found by this most common type of radar detector detector.

Keep the juice flowing
The Solo S3 features an advanced high-efficiency battery design that consumes only a fraction of the power used by conventional corded detectors. Slip in the included pair of "AA" batteries and enjoy months of protection with normal driving use. A low-battery warning circuit gives you audible and visual alerts before the batteries need to be replaced. The programmable AutoPower feature shuts off the detector when not in use to further conserve battery life so the Solo S3 will perform when you need it most.

Understand the threats
The Solo S3's brilliant, easy-to-read display presents all the information you need quickly and without confusion. The graphic signal strength meters give you an idea of the threat's proximity, while text messages convey urgent messages. Sensitivity modes keep the false alerts to a minimum, while different mute settings let you keep things quiet. The Solo S3 features nine programmable features for convenient customization — and it'll remember your presets when you change the detector's batteries.

Sorry, but we cannot ship radar detectors to Virginia or the District of Columbia.

Both range and filtering are excellent but it should have GPS to identify the location of false alarms I drive by daily for the price I paid.

ESCORT DOES IT AGAIN WITH THE SOLO S3

Written by: Michael from Oregon on August 28, 2015

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I had the original Solo that lasted forever without a single problem (20 years +). Gave the old one to my daughter who now uses it. On 'highway mode' the amount of warning is crazy good. Most times a mile or two depending on if it is instant on, or continuous KA bans favored by the CHP and OSP on the west coast. Never a false from this band length. There was a 1 star review by someone here claiming it wouldn't go off till he was right on top of the source. He obviously did not read the directions or never owned a detector (and had it set to 'city mode' or 'auto'. When I am on the highway, I want it to be as sensitive as possible. There is plenty of warning for Laser too. If there is enough traffic that he is randomly shooting other cars and trucks in front, it picks up the random signal with an attention getting urgency from the Solo. The design is very sleek and modern. The size is very thin and not in the least bit bulky. This is important to me because I place my detectors as high in the center of the windshield as possible (next to the rear view mirror). For a better look down the road in front of me and better reception through the rear window for the rear facing antenna! The thing is just as sensitive for radar coming up from behind you. OK, one complaint. The suction cup mount is the same as the original of 20+ years ago. The small cups take several tries to gain enough purchase to not fall off. But this can be remedied by the heavy duty cup if you choose!

Pros: Size, sensitivity, ease of use, front and rear protection and built like a tank for longevity. Excellent customer service as always from Escort!

Cons: Funky and small suction cups on the supplied windshield bracket.

ESCORT SOLO S3

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This current purchase represents my 5th & 6th Escort product, starting with the very first Escort. the Solo 3 may not have the range/distance of a hardwired detector, but for a fast, clean installation & easy movement from vehicle to vehicle it can not be beat. it is easy to use & ready to go right out of the box.

Pros: escort products have proven to be very reliable. (do not break down) Escort products have been proven to be very reliable. Escort products have proven to perform as advertized. Solo 2 & Solo 3 are easy to use. Solo 3 is better at false signals & the display is easier to read battery life is about 4 to 6 weeks + no electrical wires hanging in your view & no hardwareing nesassary easy to position any where on the windscreen

Cons: You need to replace batteries

This is second escort solo

The solo detectors are excellent , I have learned using lithium ion batteries gives the best battery longevity.

Pros: Excellent detector, plenty of warning time, no wires

Cons: None

Outstanding Product

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Fourth Escort product I have owned over the years, and they just seem to keep getting better! The ease of the Solo in placement, with no cord to hide or have to hard-wire and the ability to move from my car to my wifes so effortlessly is such a plus. There dont seem to be too many "false alarms", especially over my old 6800 this unit is replacing. Reviews seemed to all be good before buying, and Crutchfields price could not be beat! Only issue I can see, is the bettery life isnt the best. Supposedly there is a low battery warning, so it wont just die on you, but Im not quite there yet so I cant attest to that. Display on this unit is stellar! Other than that, I could not be happier!

Pros: No cord, very few false alerts, ease of moving from vehicle to vehicle

Cons: Battery life isnt the best

Escort Solo 3

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Nice display, much more visible than previous model the Solo 2. Good x and k band sensitivity, however, ka band not as good as corded Escort models. Around town at lower speeds the Ka range is adequate, but at higher speeds the range may not be enough under some circumstances. I use it mostly for suburban driving so it works fine for me.

Pros: Seems well made and display very visible except under really bright sunlight conditions. Good x and k band range. Plenty of volume.

Cons: Ka band range lacking for faster highway speeds under some conditions, i.e. instant on radar.

I have had numerous radar detectors but the Solo S3 is by far the most complete and provides de best coverage on a cordless detector.

Pros: High Tech but easy to use Clean Windshield Expert Meter

Cons: Sometimes it seems the unit is off during daylight because you cant see the power on indicator on

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

First and formost it is important to understand that the S3 model has been updated at least 3 times in the last few years so if you want the latest and best you need to buy from a reputable dealer that has up to date inventory. That being said, so far the unit I have has performed as expected. It has less annoyance alarms than my prevoius one in the "auto" mode. I am on the road approximately 3 hour a day and the first set of batteries lasted about 3 weeks.

Pros: Small, compact, battery operated so no wires, easily stored or transported.

Cons: Other than the price, none.

Pros: easy to use

Cons: in line controls

Poor Design

Written by: Keith from Miami on June 27, 2012

Poor design, batteries fade quickly, at highway speeds warning is behind the curve and you will get nailed. Batteries compartment poor design, batteries bounce loose during driving turning unit off and you willl also get nailed because the unit if off and you will not know this. Put cardboard spacer between batteries to keep them in place after. Large and out of date with modern electronic capabilities. Overpriced.

Pros: Cordless. Nice display

Cons: See review

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

has very few false alarms always around the same area, far less than what i am used to. not having the power cord makes it so much more convenient. i went by a few police cars without even a peep but maybe bc those guys were snoozing or not checking for speeders to begin with.

Pros: neat convenient cordless operation

Cons: still occasional false alarms

Great unit

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Worth the money, sits clean on the dash no cords, is better on batteries then I thought it would be, I go about 1 bar every 1.5 to 2 weeks, theres 4 bars on the battery indicator and I have it on for about 2-3 hours a day,6-7 days a week. Detects radar and laser in enough time to slow down. I am very happy with the unit

Good but....

Written by: Todd from South Florida on June 13, 2011

The S3 picks up lots of false alarms from radar operated doors in commerical buidlings, this gets real tedious, however you can switch the sensitivity on it. Small and fits on the dash nice and clean without power cord. I do not go over the speed limit by much, so this unit gives me ample warning time.

S3 Cordless Detector Good But... It's No Passport 9500ix

Written by: Ed from South Florida on May 2, 2011

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Drove to Pittburgh along several interstates and some small State roads. It picked off the Troopers well in advance, but regularily beeped inaccurate laser radar. From what I can tell, you can turn down the volume for all regular radar guns, but not a laser gun. For the money, purchase the Passport 9500ix which is ~ $100.00 more (sometimes they run a price reduction on the unit), it's much better at reducing false alarms and can notify you of red light cameras. By the way, I am speaking from experience, since I originally purchased a Passport 9500ix; but unfortunately, it was stolen at a carwash while I was out of my vehicle (duriung a detail).
