Our take on the Audiobahn AW1200V

Audiobahn's eye-catching High Excursion subwoofers blend striking cosmetics with rugged construction. The AW1200V 12" subwoofer features twin voice coils that can handle 700 RMS watts of total power with an efficient design that maximizes sound output.

A high-gloss cone manufactured from carbon composites resides at the heart of this sound machine. Supported by a tall foam surround and secured in a heavy-duty cast-aluminum basket, it rolls out lows that are fat and strong.

A striking exterior of polished chrome and satin-finish aluminum complements the beefy design of the woofer. The six-pronged crown protects the woofer from accidental damage while allowing plenty of cone excursion.

Features

Dual Voice Coils: For increased system flexibility, the woofer has two 4 ohm voice coils. When the voice coils are wired in parallel, the woofer presents a 2 ohm load. When the voice coils are wired in series, the woofer presents a 8 ohm load. In addition, each coil may be connected to a different amplifier channel and each channel will see a 4 ohm load.

Cast Basket: The dual voice coil woofer uses a polished chrome aluminum cast basket. This ensures a perfect alignment on each and every woofer. Unlike stamped baskets, the cast basket cannot bend or tweak under normal play and wear. Rigidity is important when trying to achieve strong bass and high SPL.

Carbon Composite: The woofer features a carbon composite cone, which is very rigid, allowing for more linear cone movement. The result is improved sound quality and accuracy, plus less distortion.

Treated Foam Surround: The treated foam surround is resistant to temperature variations and provides the consistent support necessary for the linear motion of the speaker cone. In addition, the inherent damping capabilities eliminate the transmission of sonic disturbances between the cone and the frame of the speaker. This greatly improves the clarity of the speaker's output.

Aluminum Voice Coil Former: The voice coil former is black, anodized aluminum for highly efficient thermal transfer. This allows winding high temperature copper wire in multiple layers for improved efficiency. This allows improved power handling by effectively dissipating heat.

Extended Pole Piece: The pole piece has been extended to provide a more linear magnetic field for the operation of the woofer. This lowers distortion and provides the woofer with better low frequency response.

Vented Oversized Back Plate: The back plate has been stepped deeper to allow the woofer more excursion without bottoming out. Additionally, the back plate is vented with a radius aerodynamic back vent, which efficiently and quickly circulates cool air around the voice coil. This allows for more excursion and increased power handling.

4-layer Voice Coil: The dual 4-layer, edge wound 2.5" voice coil design allows for a variety of impedance loads when using one or multiple subs.

Flat Spider: The speaker's linear compliance is balanced through the use of a flat spider design. A flat spider provides symmetrical control of the voice coil through its cone excursion. Linear cone excursion reduces harmonic distortion for improved sound quality. This allows for reduced mechanical distortion for better sound quality.

Crossover: Audiobahn recommends using a 12 dB/octave active crossover between 80 Hz and 100 Hz.

Speaker Terminals: Each voice coil has inputs for bare wire up to 8 gauge. The wire is held in place by tightening Allen Head bolts using the included Allen wrench.

Crown: The six-pronged crown protects the woofer from accidental damage while allowing plenty of cone excursion. The measurements in the Crutchfield database are taken without the crown. With the crown installed, the flange height increase to 0.497" and the mounting height increases to 1.907".

Enclosure Compatibility

Recommended Sealed Box Volume: Audiobahn recommends a sealed enclosure with an internal volume between 0.5 and 1.5 cubic feet. While no ideal volume is given, the manual notes the larger enclosure will play a lower note, but will not handle as much power.

Recommended Ported Box Volume: Audiobahn recommends a ported enclosure with an internal volume between 1.3 and 3.3 cubic feet. Three specific enclosures are listed in the manual. The "Space Saver" design is 1.3 cubic feet and has one 3" diameter x 7" long port. The "Everyday Bass" design is 2.3 cubic feet and has one 4" diameter x 7" long port. The "Ultimate SPL" design is 3.3 cubic feet and has two 4" diameter x 11" long ports.

Power Handling Note

Power Handling: The woofer has two 4 ohm voice coils, and each coil can handle up to 350 watts RMS (700 watts total).

This Sub Rocks

Written By Max D, Appleton, WI on Saturday, August 12, 2006

I bought 1 of these subs a few days ago just to start out again after blowing my 2 12in Infinity's. I have this one sub currenty wired to a Power Acoustik LT1920 amp (about 2000watts) running at 2Ohms and this thing pounds! I can only imagine how these will sound as soon as I purchase the second. This one Audiobahn hits harder that my 2 previous Infinty's with only around 1000 watts peak and 400 rms at the moment, Soon to be 1000w to both channels. I have this sub mounted in about a 1.3 cu.ft. box in a 1991 Dodge Dynasty and the windshield shakes so rappidly that the rearview mirror points straight down at the ground. Great buy to anyone looking for mad ass bass that can take a beating!

Awesome woofer!

Written By Tim, Detoit, MI on Friday, June 30, 2006

Great sub. Have each voice coil hooked to its own channel at 320 watts and its TOO loud. Matched it with a Kenwood Excelon X-890 needless to say the combination is amazing.

worth the dough

Written By Thomas, Springfield, MO on Wednesday, March 22, 2006

I initially bought this sub to replace a very nice Kicker 2VC I had bought in-town over a year ago. It has proven to be a very wise decision! Not that there was anything wrong with the Kicker (I was and still am impressed by it) but the specs on the Audiobahn were spot on, and work well with the Audiobahn amp I had used in my 'Vette to power the Kicker. After proper break-in, I have noticed much more low end bass and an overall slightly looser sound that works well with the Q-Logic sealed box. I listen mostly to rock, with some jazz and eighties stuff, and even the occasional rap or country tune, and they all sound great!!! Even bagpipes, drums, and didgeridoos sound fab with this one. The specs of power range, low frequency response, and especially sensitivity make this sub sound fantastic! My only negative would be that a customer might want better protection on the top in case you put things in the trunk or toss gear back there, but this can be fixed at home with a new grill or homemade covering. But the chrome finish sure is hard to miss and a shame to cover up. This speaker comes in a nice wood box and before you even get it all the way out you will be knocked dead by the appearance, and in the car it will get noticed by passengers before you even crank up the volume! Construction, fit, finish, and even the terminals are top-notch. When matched with the proper enclosure and amp, you can't go wrong with this one, and people will be surprised you got out at only 2 C-notes in price. Use the extra hundred to upgrade the amp or box, or maybe take the Mrs. out for a nice dinner to make up for the fortune she thinks you just dropped on another item for the car!

The type of bass you get from your component subwoofer doesn't depend on the woofer alone. You'll need a strong, tightly constructed enclosure for optimum subwoofer performance.
