Our take on the AKG K 495 NC

by Dave Bar
AKG
folding design

The compact folding design means you'll want to take these headphones with you everywhere.

Travel in peace and quiet with these compact, high-quality headphones

AKG's K 495 NC headphones are a life-saver for busy professionals on the go. They use built-in active circuitry to reduce external background noise, for a quieter, more relaxing listening experience. The softly cushioned leather earpads and headband stay comfortable for hours at a stretch. Brushed-metal parts and solid construction lend these 'phones a luxurious and durable feel. AKG has over 60 years of experience designing headphones, so you can count on accurate, uncolored sound.

Enjoy your music wherever you roam

The K 495 NC's built-in rechargeable battery provides up to 40 hours of noise-canceling operation per charge, and comes with its own compact wall charger. You can even charge up using the supplied USB charging cable and one of your computer's USB ports. AKG's patented folding design allows these 'phones to collapse down to a super-compact size for easy travel. They'll connect to virtually any portable audio device with a mini headphone jack, plus you get an airline adapter, so you can plug into in-flight entertainment systems and block out engine roar. A handy carrying case stores the headphones along with all the included accessories.

From our review of the AKG K 495 NC

"Between the padded, easily adjustable headband, the plush and comfortable earpieces, and the balanced, bass-forward yet restrained presentation, you have a recipe for a headphone that's primed for the long haul, no matter where you find yourself."

— Woody, Crutchfield A/V Writer

Akg k495

Written By Hank808, Honolulu on Saturday, March 02, 2013
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I've used the Qc3 for a number of years and thought no other maker could beat it. Until I came across several reviews praising the AKG K 495. I gave it try and was thoroughly impressed with the build, the quality of sound, and the nc function. Much better bang for the buck.
Pros:
Sound is better across all channels. The build and look of the k495 is better than anything presently available.
Cons:
You do experience ear fatigue, but you get used to it after a few sittings.

Great Quality but failed on some basic details

Written By David, Portland, OR on Thursday, February 07, 2013
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

First the good: Noise reduction and sound quality are great. Sounds way better than the Bose. Must have a built-in amp b/c it gets super loud. Overall super premium phones.

Now the bad: While the construction is very high quality, they failed to consider a few basic details that end up being really annoying. 1) The cloth wire is great for not tangling, but the fabric rubs against your shirt collar, creating a sound that's amplified in the phones when the NC function is on. 2) They should have made a button to turn the NC on/off. The big ring is a cool idea but not functional at all. It's too hard to turn on/off when the headphones are on, but even worse the metal ring is loose (it jiggles), which again creates an amplified noise every time it contacts something (your hand, your chair) or you turn your head quickly.
Pros:
Very high quality construction. Sound great. NC is exceptional.
Cons:
Components make noise that's amplified in the phones when NC is on. Over the ear would be more comfortable, but for wearing under 2 hours it's fine without a break.

Fell short of expectations for AKG

Written By Brad, Houston on Wednesday, January 30, 2013
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I've purchased this set of headphones twice, because I was so impressed with their potential. The design and materials used is excellent. Under the right circumstances, the sound is awesome. However, with noice cancellation on, there was obvious low frequency distortion on about half the tracks I listened to. Although the NC switch is uniqure, it doesn't work well. On the second pair of AKG 495s, the switch had "play" in it and only activated NC about 50% of the time. You had to "toggle" it back and forth to get it to work. I have now returned two copies of the AKG 495, relucatantly because they have so much potential. I purchased a pair of the less expensive AKG-490s and I will keep them. There is no distortion in the bass of the 490 and the simple on / off switch for NC works every time. The 490 lacks the "awesome" sound of the 495 when everything is just right, but they still sound very good and there is never any distortion.
Pros:
Design and materials used. Very efficient. Unique set of cans. Under the right conditions, fantastic sound stage and presenece.
Cons:
NC switch is poorly assembled and often doesn't work. Considerable bass "boost" in NC mode, which causes significant distortion.

Great Quality but Can Improve

Written By DonS, Cedarburg, WI on Tuesday, January 29, 2013

These headphones do exemplify a qualioty product. they are constructed well, package and travel extremely efficiently, are true to their charge specifications, and are a good buy. They are generally comfortable, but for a long flight (i,e, more than 2+ hours) still require you to shift them to avoid discomfort on the ears. The sound quality, both with and without the noise canceling turned on, is crystal clear and superior quality; although can be slightly light on bass in passive mode. The one item most concerning is that while they are exceptional at filtering out the airplane engine sounds, they are fairly ineffective at filtering out other ambient noises, such as passenger voices, the clinks and clanks that occur on airplanes, the annoying announcements, or the coughs and sneezes. Still, they do muffle enough to provide a good, restful environment allowing sleep or peaceful reading. Overall, a worthy investment.
Pros:
Compactness, sound quality, tangle-free cords, built in rechargeable battery (no fumbling with AA's).
Cons:
Noise canceling above average but not great, and not much else.

Stylish but not much else

Written By Searchy, Lawrence, KS on Monday, January 21, 2013
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

To date, these headphones are the best looking pair on the market. The slivery metallic hinges combined with authentic leather earphone covers makes a killer fashion statement. The swivel switch and green/red lighting are beautiful. Forget about Bose and Beats, these are what a Fortune 500 executive would wear. The case and accessories are top notch as well. The case is genuine leather that's so soft you'll think about getting a case to protect the case. I can spend all day enjoying the texture of the case, forget about the headphones! As much as I would like to stop my review here and just dwell on the case, I bought headphones and intend on using them. There are so many negatives that I will present them in list form for the purpose of organization. ***Design*** I have no doubt to the quality and longevity of the headphone joints. For record, the build quality is excellent. Attention to detail in the design was pretty thorough. You will appreciate the numbered notches on the adjustable band. However, the AKG K495s fail in functionality. Keeping the cans from bumping into each other, scratching off the paint, is impossible. Whether wearing them DJ style or storing them in the case, the cans will bump into each other and leave scratches. Folding them into the included case is an enigma. They cannot be folded such that they are symmetrical. Instead, the proper way to store them is little better than randomly tossing them in and hoping they fit. The metal joints also scratch
Pros:
the delicate insides, made of slippery nylon, of the case. ***Comfort*** These are one of the least comfortable on-ear headphones I've had the opportunity to try on. The leather on both cans, as previously mentioned, are exceptionally soft. They feel practically weightless upon your head. Unfortunately, the inner edge of the leather, where the leather connects to the mesh that allows sound to pass through, is hard and chaffs against your ear. Wearing them for more than 4 hours is unbearable.
Cons:
I thought they might need breaking in so I bore the pain and wore them for 50 hours. In the end, they were still tough and uncomfortable. ***Sound Quality*** Poor is the kindest word to describe the SQ. These headphones lack depth although clarity was exceptional. The soundstage was very limited, I was constantly reminded that the sound was coming through headphones. The bass in Passive mode was practically nonexistent. Mids were great while highs failed on me. ***NC*** Defective. Loud pop

Better than Bose. Easy to ware although after 4 hours had to move phones so ears were not pinched. On off switch on left side is excellent. Noise cancelation is excellent and battery life is long. Love the cloth covered wires which do not knot up very much at all.
