Our take on the Delphi Roady2 Portable Package

Delphi's Roady2 portable package includes everything you need for in-car and portable XM reception — the Roady2 XM Satellite Radio receiver, the Personal Audio System, a cassette adapter, a built-in wireless FM transmitter, a cigarette lighter power adapter, and a magnetic roof-mount antenna. The Roady2's extremely compact size allows for a variety of installation options, even if space is tight in your car.

The sleek, gun metal gray radio features seven selectable display colors (plus three colored faceplates) for a totally personalized look. You can save up to 30 presets for instant access to your favorite channels, and search by channel number or category, or enter channel numbers directly.

You can send the Roady2's audio signal to your car stereo using the convenient cassette adapter, or by connecting the Roady2 to your stereo's auxiliary input. If you don't have a cassette deck or an auxiliary input on your radio, you can still listen to the Roady2 through your vehicle's radio using the built-in wireless FM transmitter.

The Personal Audio System converts your Roady2 receiver into a true portable, so you can wear it when you're jogging, tailgating at sporting events, or lounging on the beach. A unique docking system locks the Roady2 in place, while the included headphones feature a built-in antenna in the headpiece for XM reception in any open area.

Charge up the System's built-in rechargeable battery with the included AC adapter, and you'll get about four hours of playback life. The System also includes a built-in FM tuner. Volume controls are built into both the system and the headphones. You can play the Roady2 through your home stereo, thanks to the optional home kit.

A subscription to XM is also required. XM Satellite Radio service is available only in the lower 48 states, not available in Alaska, Hawaii, or U.S. territories.

Overview

Overview: The Delphi Roady2 GoPack contains everything you need to enjoy XM Satellite Radio in your vehicle or on-the-go. The GoPack contains the Roady2 XM Satellite Radio receiver, a cassette adapter, a cigarette lighter power adapter, and a magnetic roof-mount antenna. It also contains the Delphi Personal Audio System, which includes a portable, battery powered dock for the Roady2, an AC adapter, and headphones with a built-in antenna. In order for the system to work, you'll need a subscription to XM Satellite Radio.

XM Satellite Radio: XM Satellite Radio programming offers more than 120 digital radio channels including 68 channels of commercial free music, plus news, sports, talk, comedy, and other entertainment programming from coast to coast.

Roady2 Features

Roady2 Display: While tuned to an XM channel, the display contains the following information: artist name, channel name and number, display mode indicator, category search indicator, signal strength indicator, and keypad mode (Direct, Preset A, or Preset B). The receiver display features seven selectable colors: red, green, sky blue, orange, night blue, purple, and pink.

Interchangeable Faceplates: The Roady2 is equipped with three interchangeable face plates. You can install the Roady2 with a red, blue or black faceplate to suit your mood or match your vehicle.

FM Frequency: Roady2's internal FM modulator can be used to send the audio to your radio on an unused FM station. You can choose from 12 different stations: 88.1, 88.3, 88.5, 88.7, 88.9, 106.7, 106.9, 107.1, 107.3, 107.5, 107.7, and 107.9 MHz. (In order to optimize the performance of this feature, the XM antenna should be installed near your vehicle's FM antenna.)

Tuning Wheel: The Tuning Wheel can be used to scroll through channel or menu options. Pressing the Tuning Wheel allows you to select the current channel or menu option.

Direct Entry: Using the numeric buttons on the face of the receiver, you can directly access XM channels.

Direct Tune: This feature changes the functionality of the Tuning Wheel so that it automatically selects a channel each time it is rolled, without having to press the Tuning Wheel in.

Channel Presets: The receiver can store up to 30 preset channels. They are organized into three different groups, or memory banks: Preset A, Preset B, and Preset C. Each memory bank can store up to 10 channels.

Channel Preview: You can use the Tuning Wheel to preview the artists and songs currently playing on other channels without having to tune away from your current channel.

Artist Name and Song Title Memory: You can save the artist's name and song title on the current channel for future reference. Up to 20 different artist names/song titles can be saved at once, after which any new information that is saved will replace the oldest information in memory.

Tune Select: Using this function, you can program the receiver to alert you with a tone and display change when a favorite song is played again on a channel other than the one you are listening to.

Stock Ticker: This feature lets you track up to 20 of your favorite stocks and indices. You can track any stock symbol and most indices listed on the NYSE, NASDAQ, and AMEX. The stock market index information on the Roady2 is approximately 25 minutes delayed.

Audio Level: You can adjust the receiver's audio level output if it is too high, causing distortion, or too low for your vehicle.

Auto-off: You can set the tuner to automatically shut off 60, 120, or 180 minutes after it is turned on.

Car Mount: Using the supplied car mount with attached adhesive pad, the receiver can be mounted to any flat surface in your vehicle. The car mount has a ball joint that allows you to swivel the receiver for optimum viewing. Using the self-adhesive Velcro pads, you can mount the receiver directly to your vehicle's dashboard without using the car mount.

Optional Home Kit: An optional home kit (item # 040SA10069) allows you to listen to XM Satellite Radio through your home audio system. The kit includes a docking station, wireless remote control, an indoor/outdoor antenna, an audio patch cord, and a power supply.

Personal Audio System Features

Personal Audio System Display: The Roady2 Personal Audio System's 1-1/8" x 3/8" LCD display shows the mode (FM or XM), FM station, battery charge indicator, and volume.

Backlight: Any time you adjust the controls or change modes, the blue LED backlight turns on for a short time so you can easily read the display information.

Mode Switch: Using the mode switch, you can choose one of the following modes: FM radio, XM satellite radio, or Off.

Headset: The unique headset has been specially designed for the Roady2 Personal Audio System to receive satellite radio signals and produce excellent sound quality. The headset contains a built-in antenna that has the same ability to receive satellite signals as the antenna that is included in the Roady2 package. There is a built-in volume control on the right side. Like your Roady2 antenna, the headset must be in a line of sight with the satellite in order to function.

Rechargeable Battery Pack: The Roady2 Personal Audio System uses a rechargeable Lithium Ion battery. The battery will fully charge in approximately two hours when the Roady2 Personal Audio System is turned off. A fully charged battery will run up to four hours in XM mode and at least 12 hours in FM mode.

Best XM Portable

Written By David, Los Angeles, CA on Tuesday, January 17, 2006

For the price and ease of use you can't beat the Roady2 To Go combo, especially if you are looking for portability. The headset antenna is much better that the clip antenna that comes with the XM2Go recievers, and the display is very easy to read. Not sure about where you live, but reception is perfect in L.A.

Pretty Happy, Not Ecstatic

Written By Maureen, Atlanta, GA on Tuesday, January 17, 2006

This is my first experience with satellite radio. I like it, although I was disappointed at having so many commercials on the traffic and news channels. I don't know what I was expecting, fewer and less obnoxious?

The unit won't go on for some reason, about once every six times I try. Yesterday I hit a bump and it turned off.

I do not like the headphones. I really wanted to use this in my art studio, as FM reception is a problem. Those headphones are archaic, though. I intend to look for some speakers, and utilize the car antennae.

Lots of good clean fun

Written By max3000, Roseburg, OR on Sunday, January 15, 2006

Well I have to say I like my Portable player. Although 2 things get me and that is the 2 hr battery life and the volume/seek control. The battery has only about 2 hrs of XM play before its empty. Hmmm need second battery for long days. Volume/seek control seems kind of cheap. But definetly the best way to get portable XM radio for less. Love this thing!!!!! I will buy a second battery soon with a case to put it in. I recommend this item to anyone with a Roady2 player.

Outstanding product!

Written By Kaileen, Clinton, MS on Tuesday, January 03, 2006

My husband and I gave each other XM Radio for Christmas: he got a receiver for the car, and I got the Roady 2. I relax at work by listening to radio, and the station choices are fantastic. The Roady 2 is easy to use and the reception is crisp and clear just about anywhere I go.

We have also tried the Roady in another car using the FM Modulator. The reception on this was also very good: our only problem is most of the FM frequencies suggested are used in this area. Only one frequency worked for us.

I would highly recommend this product.

So inexpensive I had to call and confirm the price!

Written By Homeless Bob, Raleigh, NC on Saturday, December 31, 2005

I travel a lot because of my job and consequently have rented lots of cars with XM radio... after months of listening to it nationwide, I finally decided to jump in to satellite radio.

I wanted a cheap, plug-n-play receiver to move between rental cars and saw this unit... WOW! I literally had to call and confirm the price!

I snapped it up and a home connect kit.

The unit is solid. Reception has been fantastic! The headphones are adaquate. I love the caddy unit with the battery... a set of battery powered speakers and I can have XM anywhere for about 5 hours!

The small car antenna works great on the back deck of cars. Reception hasn't even been a problem in heavily wooded, hilly/mountainous terrain.

I read a lot of reviews before purchasing a roady2 and several talk about button backlighting, etc... poppycock. The unit is fine. You shouldn't be fiddling with radio buttons while you drive anyway! Change the station at the next light.

I will never listen to terrestrial radio again.
