Up-to-the-minute HDTV technology
High-definition broadcasts look pinpoint-sharp and clear on this set's high-resolution screen. The built-in tuner can pull in both standard (analog) and digital over-the-air broadcasts these signals are free, but you'll need to connect an antenna to get them. Plus, a built-in "QAM" tuner allows cable subscribers to watch unscrambled programs without using a set-top box. Just plug the TV directly into a wall cable jack.

TV/DVD Combo: The Toshiba 23HLV87 is a 23" widescreen LCD TV with a built-in side-mounted DVD slot. In addition to DVD, you can add other sources using the composite, S-Video, component video, and HDMI inputs. There is also a PC input for connecting your computer.
Native Resolution: The 23HLV87 has a display resolution of 1360 x 768. The HDMI and component video inputs will accept 1080i, 720p, 480p, and 480i signals, and all inputs are displayed at 1360 x 768.
Favorite Channels: This feature allows you to store up to 12 of your favorite channels.
Channel and Input Labels: You can label each station in memory with a four character name. Each input can be labeled VCR, DVD, DTV, SAT, or CBL.
Lock Channel: With the channel lock feature you can lock out specific channels: up to 12 TV channels and up to 12 cable channels.
Game Mode: The Game Mode adjusts the screen to a suitable brightness for your eyes.
GameTimer: You can use the GameTimer to set a time limit of 30, 60, 90, or 120 minutes for playing a video game. When the GameTimer is activated, the TV enters the Video Lock mode and locks out the input source for the video game device.
Picture Size: You can choose one of the following picture sizes:
- Natural: image is displayed close to its originally formatted proportion, with black bars along the sides or top and bottom if the signal has an aspect ratio different than the TV
- Theater Wide 1: a 4:3 picture is non-uniformly enlarged; the center of the picture remains close to its original aspect, but the left and right edges are stretched wider to fill the screen
- Theater Wide 2: for letterbox programs, the entire picture is uniformly enlarged, the top and bottom edges of the picture may be hidden
- Theater Wide 3: for letterbox programs with subtitles, the picture is non-uniformly enlarged; stretched wider to fill the width of the screen and stretched slightly taller
- Full: this picture fills the screen, if a 4:3 program is sensed it's stretched wider to fill the screen, but not taller
Aspect: When the aspect feature is turned on and the TV receives a 480i signal, the picture size is automatically selected; a 4:3 signal is set to Natural, a 16:9 signal is set to Full, a 4:3 letterbox signal is set to Theater Wide 2. If the signal's aspect is not defined, the Picture Size defaults to the last manually chosen setting.
Picture Modes: You can select one of the following picture modes:
- Sports: bright and dynamic picture
- Standard: standard picture setting
- Movie: movie-like picture setting
- Memory: allows you to adjust and store contrast, brightness, color, tint, and sharpness
Color Temperature: The color temperature has three settings; Cool (bluish), Medium (neutral), and Warm (reddish).
Back Lighting: In a bright room is may be necessary to adjust the screen brightness using the Back Lighting feature to improve the picture quality.
Stable Sound: When the signal source is changed, this feature limits the highest volume level to prevent extreme changes in volume.
Surround Sound: The surround sound feature expands the audio listening field wider and deeper to create an exceptional sound quality from the TV's speakers.
Sleep Timer: The sleep timer turns the television off after a specified amount of time. The sleep timer can be set to 15, 30, 60, 90, and 120 minutes.
On Timer: The On Timer allows you to program the unit to turn on automatically at a set time. If the timer is left on, the TV will turn on every day at the same time.
Auto Power Off: When the Auto off feature is On, the TV will automatically turn itself off after approximately 15 minutes if it is tuned to a vacant channel or a station that completes its broadcast for the day.
Panel Lock: To prevent the settings from being accidentally changed, you can lock the side panel buttons. When activated, only the Power button on the TV will operate.
Rear Cover: The TV features a removable rear cover to allow you to access the rear panel inputs and output.
Playback Options: The DVD player features 4 fast forward and 4 fast reverse speeds (2x, 4x, 8x, and 16x), plus 4 forward slow-motion and 4 reverse slow-motion speeds (1/2x, 1/4x, 1/8x and 1/16x). When the unit is paused, you can play back the video frame-by-frame.
Repeat Play: While playing a DVD or VCD, you can repeat the current chapter, or the current title. You can also repeat material between two selected points (A-B repeat). While playing an audio CD or Video CD, you can repeat the current track or the entire disc. While playing an MP3/WMA disc, you can repeat the current file or current folder. While playing a JPEG disc, you can repeat the current file or the entire disc.
Random Play: Using the Shuffle mode, you can play chapters, tracks, or files in random order.
Zoom: During playback, you can zoom in on the frame image to one of three magnifications: 2x, 3x and 4x. While zoomed in, you can move the frame left, right, up, or down to pan around the image.
Markers: You can mark up to 3 points on a DVD or VCD and easily return to those points. The bookmarks are erased when you eject the disc or turn the power off.
MP3/WMA/DivX Playback: This unit will play MP3, WMA, DivX, and JPEG files recorded on CD-R and CD-RW discs. Slideshow (at intervals of 5, 10, or 15 seconds), image rotation (90?, 180?, and 270?), and zoom are available during JPEG playback.
Removable Pedestal Stand: The 23HLV87 comes mounted on an adjustable pedestal stand. You can tilt the LCD panel approximately 5? forward and 10? backward. The unit does not swivel to the left or right. The stand can easily be removed for wall-mounting using an optional bracket.
VESA Mounting Bracket Standard: Four screw holes on the back of the TV can be used to attach an optional wall-mount bracket. The spacing of the mounting holes is VESA 100 (100mm x 100mm), in accordance with the industry standards set by the Video Electronics Standards Association. The screw holes accept 4mm (M4) machine screws.
Rear Inputs: The rear inputs are mounted aiming downward to help maintain the unit's slim profile, and to accommodate optional wall mounting.
HDMI Input: The HDMI input on the TV/DVD receives digital audio and uncompressed digital video from an HDMI device, or uncompressed digital video only from a DVI device (when a DVI-to-HDMI adapter is connected--separate audio cables are required). The unit is designed to accept HDCP program material in digital form from compatible set-top boxes, or a DVD player with HDMI or DVI output. The HDMI input can accept 480i, 480p, 720p, or 1080i input signals.
ColorStream HD Component Video Input: The ColorStream HD component video input terminals can be used with 480i, 480p, 720p, or 1080i input signals.
Digital Audio Output: An optical digital output is provided to allow you to connect the unit to a Dolby Digital, DTS, or MPEG2 audio decoder, or a receiver with an optical digital input.
PC Input: A 15-pin D-Sub is supplied for connecting the TV/DVD to a PC. Stereo RCA jacks are supplied for inputting the PC's audio signal. While in the PC mode, you can adjust the horizontal/vertical picture position, clock (to minimize vertical stripes on the screen), and phase (to remove horizontal noise and sharpen the picture), as well as the standard picture settings (brightness, contrast, color temperature, and backlighting).
RF Input: The unit features one RF input for antenna or cable signals.
Headphone Jack: A 3.5mm (1/8") mini-jack stereo headphone output is located on the rear panel of the TV/DVD. When headphones are plugged into the headphone jack, the TV's speakers are muted.
