Toshiba

Our take on the Toshiba 42HL196

Get High-Def Programming

High-quality flat-panel LCDs are improving faster than almost any other type of TV display. Toshiba's elegant, all-black 42" 42HL196 is a perfect example. It's 1080p resolution (1920 x 1080 pixels) is higher than that of any similar-sized plasma. And the crucial "pixel response time" is also much faster than on last year's LCDs, so on-screen motion is naturally smooth and smear-free.

Built-in HD tuners
The 42HL196 has two built-in HDTV tuners — one for over-the-air broadcasts, and one for cable TV signals. To get the most from this "Digital Cable Ready" set, ask your local cable service provider about a CableCARD. The CableCARD actually fits into a rear-panel slot on the TV and replaces your set-top box. You'll get a slightly cleaner picture, and you won't miss your cable box's on-screen program guide because the 42HL196 includes TV Guide On Screen, a subscription-free guide that requires no phone hookup.

Chances are you'll continue to watch some regular (analog) TV programs for a few more years. Toshiba's powerful digital video processing includes noise-reduction circuitry that seriously cleans up standard signals for a more pleasing look.

Enough inputs to keep you entertained
The 42" screen delivers impressive home theater impact in your living room. And the thin, space-efficient cabinet wouldn't look out of place in some larger master bedrooms. The versatile set of audio/video connections includes two component video inputs plus two digital HDMI inputs for your highest-quality sources. A standard computer input makes it easy to connect your laptop PC so you can have a bigger view for gaming or web-surfing. You can play for hours with no worries because unlike plasma TVs, LCD displays run no risk of screen burn-in.

TV Features

HDTV Tuner: The TV has built-in over-the-air HDTV (ATSC) and Digital Cable (QAM) tuners, so you don't need a separate set-top box to receive and decode over-the-air HDTV/SDTV or unencrypted Digital Cable signals. The unit also have a slot for a CableCARD, provided by your cable provider, which allows you to view encrypted digital cable programming.

Cinespeed: Toshiba's REGZA Premium LCD Hi-Speed Cinespeed panels offer fast response times of 8ms or less for an ultra sharp picture, especially when displaying fast-moving action scenes, and demanding video games.

PixelPure Hi-Bit Digital Video Processing: Toshiba's PixelPure video processing system uses a 12-bit video DAC and constantly monitors changes in signal quality, content, and movement to enhance sharpness, contrast, and color reproduction.

Native Resolution: The 42HL196 displays all inputs at a resolution of 1920 x 1080. The HDMI and component video inputs will accept 1080i, 720p, 480p, and 480i signals.

TV Guide On Screen: This TV features TV Guide On Screen, a no-fee interactive program guide. TV Guide On Screen allows you to view eight days of show listings in three 30-minute time slots at a time. Channels are displayed by logo, channel number, or both. You can tune directly to a selected channel from the listings grid. TV Guide On Screen can also set shows to record to a VCR, and can automatically turn on and tune to a scheduled show when it starts.

CableClear DNR: Designed to optimize poor NTSC signals from antenna or cable, this noise reduction system eliminates video noise ("snow") for a clean crisp image. This system detects the quality of the incoming video signal, and automatically applies the needed amount of video optimization.

Channel Browser: The Channel Browser allows you to browse and view channels by storing your recently viewed channels in channel history. You can surf back or forward to channels you viewed prior to your current channel. Up to 32 previously viewed channels, along with picture snapshots of the previously viewed channels and inputs, can be stored in history. The Favorite Browser allows you to quickly set up a favorite channel/inputs list that is integrated into the Channel Browser.

SurfLock: The SurfLock feature temporarily memorizes one channel under the Channel Return button, so you can return to that channel quickly from any other channel.

Picture Size: When viewing a source, you can choose one of the following picture sizes:

  • Natural: image is displayed close to its originally formatted proportion
  • Theater Wide 1: the picture is non-uniformly enlarged; the center of the picture remains close to its true proportion, but the left and right edges are stretched wider to fill the screen, used primarily with a 4:3 source
  • Theater Wide 2: entire picture is uniformly enlarged, used primarily with a widescreen source
  • Theater Wide 3: picture is non-uniformly enlarged; the picture is stretched wider to fill the width of the screen and stretched slightly taller
  • Full: mainly designed for receiving a squeezed 4:3 signal (a 16:9 programs squeezed into a 4:3 transmission), the picture is stretched wider to fill the screen, but not taller, none of the picture is hidden
    • Note: Full cannot be used with 1080i and 720p signals.
  • Native: If receiving a 1080i signal, the native mode displays the full picture without scaling. Not available with any other signal formats.

Picture Modes: You can select one of the following picture modes for each input:

  • Sports: bright and dynamic picture
  • Standard: standard picture setting
  • Movie: lower contrast for a darkened room
  • Preference: allows you to adjust and store contrast, back light, brightness, color, tint, and sharpness

Game Mode: When playing a video game requiring split-second timing (high-action games, music creation, etc.), the Game Mode shortens the frame delays between the on-screen display and the input from the controller.

Note: The Game Mode can only be used on the Video 1, Video 2, ColorStream HD1, ColorStream HD2, HDMI 1 or HDMI 2 inputs.

Game Timer: The Game Timer allows you to set a time limit for playing a video game. You can set the timer to 30, 60, 90, or 120 minutes. When the Game Timer is activated, the TV enters Input Lock mode and locks out the input source for the video game device.

MPEG Noise Reduction: The MPEG noise reduction feature allows you to reduce visible interference caused by MPEG compression. You can choose High, Medium, Low, or Off.

Dynamic Contrast: When dynamic contrast is set to On, the TV will detect when changes in picture quality that affect the appearance of your contrast settings and adjust the video automatically.

Stable Sound: When the signal source is changed, this feature limits the highest volume level to prevent extreme changes in volume.

SRS WOW: WOW is a special combination of SRS Labs audio technologies that creates a surround sound experience with deep, rich bass from stereo sound sources, making the TV audio sound fuller, richer, and wider. WOW consists of these three features:

  • SRS 3D: turns on/off the surround sound effect
  • FOCUS: turns on/off the vocal emphasis effect
  • TruBass: selects the desired bass expansion level (High, Low, or Off)

Sleep Timer: The sleep timer switches the television off after a specified amount of time. The sleep timer can be adjusted from 10 minutes to 3 hours in 10-minute increments.

On/Off Timer: You can use the On/Off timer to turn the TV on and off at a preset time on a recurring basis.

Front Panel Lock: You can lock the control panel to prevent your settings from being changed accidentally (by children, for example). When the lock is On, only the power button will operate.

Input Lock: You can use the Input Lock feature to lock the video inputs so that they cannot be viewed. Input Lock works for Video 1, Video 2, ColorStream HD-1, ColorStream HD-2, HDMI 1, HDMI 2, and PC, as well as channels 3 and 4.

Input Label: You can label each input according to the connected source. The preset list of labels includes: Cable, DTV, Satellite/DSS, VCR, Laser Disc, DVD, HD-DVD, Audio Receiver, Compact Disc, Video Recorder, Game Console, Hide (so you don't have to toggle through an input you're not using), and the default label is blank.

THINC: The Toshiba Home Interactive Network Connection (THINC) feature allows you to connect the TV to your home network which will enable access to file sharing and e-mail scheduling features. You can access JPEG and MP3 files stored on your network or home PC and play them on the TV. You can also schedule recordings and reminders by sending an e-mail from any PC. This feature requires Windows XP Home or Professional (Service Pack 1 or 2) or Windows 2000 Operating systems.

Note: You cannot access or browse the Internet through the TV.

Mounting Options

Detachable Stand: The TV comes mounted on a pedestal stand for easy placement on top of a counter or table.

Wall Mounting: The TV has 4 threaded inserts on the back for use with an optional wall-mount bracket. The spacing of the mounting holes is VESA 200 (200mm x 200mm) in accordance with the industry standards set by the Video Electronics Standards Association. The threaded inserts require M6 (6mm) machine screws.

Remote Control

Multibrand Remote: The supplied remote is pre-programmed to operate this unit and a number of functions on many other brand components; including cable boxes, satellite receivers, DVD players (including portables), VCRs, PVRs, Cable/PVR combos, DBS/PVR combos, Audio Amps, CD players, and A/V receivers.

Inputs and Outputs Notes

HDMI Inputs: This TV is equipped with two HDMI jacks which can accommodate a copy-protected digital connection (HDCP) from other devices (such as digital set-top boxes) that have compatible interfaces. The HDMI jacks are compliant with the EIA/CEA-861/861B standard and are not intended for use with personal computers. If you want to connect a DVI-compatible device, you will need an HDMI-to-DVI adapter cable. Since DVI does not carry audio signals, a stereo RCA audio input is provided for the HDMI input (shared by the PC input).

Note: The HDMI jacks will accept 1080i, 720p, 480p, and 480i signals.

RGB/PC Input: This connection allows you to view the image of a personal computer on the TV screen. When connecting the PC to the TV, you will need a 15-pin RGB computer cable and a PC audio cable.

Note: The PC input shares the audio input with the HDMI/DVI input, so if you are connecting a device using an HDMI/DVI adapter, you will not be able to plug in the PC audio cable.

THINC (Ethernet) Port: An RJ-45 jack is provided for connecting the TV to your home network for file sharing and e-mail.

Component Video Inputs: The two ColorStream HD Component video inputs will accept 1080i, 720p, 480p, and 480i signals.

A/V Output: Standard composite video and analog audio outputs are provided for connecting a VCR for editing and dubbing. The A/V OUT terminals will output audio only when the TV's input mode is HDMI, Component Video, or PC, or when the MP3 Audio player is active.

Digital Audio Output: An optical digital output is provided to allow you to connect the unit to a surround processor. The format can be set to Dolby Digital or PCM.

Antenna Inputs: There are 2 RF coaxial inputs for analog or digital cable/antenna connections. The menu allows you to configure the inputs for the type of input signals available: cable or antenna.

G-Link: A 3.5mm minijack is provided for use with the supplied IR blasters to enable the TV Guide On Screen recording features.
