Our take on the Toshiba 52HMX84

With its vivid, pinpoint-sharp pictures, DLP™ (Digital Light Processing) is bringing excitement back to big-screen TVs. This amazing imaging technology is at the heart of Toshiba's high-performance Cinema Series tabletop big-screens.

The 52" 52HMX84 uses a proprietary system called TALEN™ (Toshiba Advanced Light Engine). It's based on Texas Instruments' HD2+ — one of their most advanced DLP chips. It has the same 1280 x 720-pixel resolution as the popular HD2 chip, but this upgraded version delivers enhanced brightness and contrast. High-quality DLP TVs already look sharper and brighter than most tube-based big-screens. Toshiba's Cinema Series models can now also challenge conventional TVs when it comes to reproducing deep blacks, and revealing details in dark or shadowy scenes.

The 52HMX84 is HDTV-ready (a separate HDTV tuner is necessary to receive High-Definition signals). Non-HD signals are upconverted and enhanced by Toshiba's multi-step PixelPure™ video processing system, which optimizes the three main picture quality factors: resolution, contrast, and color. All incoming signals are scaled to match the DLP chip's native 1280 x 720 (720p) resolution.

Another great Toshiba innovation is the dual-mode Radiance™ DC Lamp. The 120-watt high-brightness setting is for daytime use with ambient room light, while the 100-watt setting decreases brightness and increases contrast ratio for more cinematic nighttime viewing in a room with dimmed or darkened lights. (Tip: the 100-watt mode also extends lamp life.) The lamp's unique Instant Restart feature allows the TV to be turned on immediately after shutdown, unlike other lamp-based models.

The 52HMX84 looks uncommonly graceful for a big-screen — from the front, it looks like a plasma! In fact, it's barely 15" deep and weighs under 100 lbs., so it won't take over your room. It has a total of 7 A/V inputs, including two component video inputs and two single-cable HDMI digital A/V inputs. The TV's picture controls offer set-and-forget convenience for viewers eager to start watching, as well as customizable settings for each input for those who love to tweak (you know who you are!).

Features

TALEN (Toshiba Advanced Light Engine): This system features Texas Instruments' HD2+ DLP chip, which provides high resolution with enhanced brightness and contrast.

PixelPure: Non-HD signals are upconverted and enhanced by Toshiba's multi-step PixelPure video processing system, which optimizes the three main picture quality factors: resolution, contrast, and color.

Native Resolution: The 52HMX84 has a display resolution of 1280 x 720. The HDMI and component video inputs will accept 1080i, 720p, 480p, and 480i signals, and will display them as 1280 x 720. All other input signals will also be displayed as 1280 x 720.

TheaterFine DFP: This TV features TheaterFine DFP Screen technology with a Digital Fine Pitch and Anti-Glare Coating that results in incredible detail and noticeably deeper blacks.

4MB, 10-bit 3D Digital Comb Filter with Vertical Contour Correction: This advanced filter analyzes sequential fields of information to eliminate dot crawl and color bleed. Additionally, the filter significantly reduces detail noise, seen as shimmering or flicker, in complex or intricately detailed scenes. Most video noise normally seen in RF and composite video signals is eliminated.

CableClear DNR+: Designed to optimize poor NTSC signals from antenna or cable, this noise reduction system eliminates video noise ("snow") for a clean crisp image. This system detects the quality of the incoming video signal, and automatically applies the needed amount of video optimization.

2-Tuner Picture-in-Picture: This feature splits the screen into a double window that allows you to watch two programs side-by-side. When the input signals of the main and secondary pictures are both 480i, you can use the Swap function to switch the programs. You can also toggle between the audio from the main and secondary programs. The Double-Window feature displays each picture according to its input signal aspect ratio. The main window (on the left) can only show images with a 4:3 aspect ratio, and the secondary window (on the right) can show images with both 4:3 and 16:9 aspect ratios.

Note: The main window can only display 480i signals.

Programmed Channel Search Function: This function lets you quickly scan your programmed channels. The TV automatically enters multi-window mode, and begins a twelve picture scan of your programmed channels. In each small window, there is a still picture of the program on that channel.

Favorite Channels: This feature allows you to store 12 of your favorite channels.

Favorite Channel Search Function: This function lets you quickly scan your favorite channels in the same way that you scan your programmed channels.

SurfLock: The SurfLock feature temporarily memorizes one channel under the Channel Return button, so you can return to that channel quickly from any other channel.

Picture Size: When viewing a 1080i, 480i, or 480p signal source, you can choose one of the following picture sizes:

  • Natural: image is displayed close to its originally formatted proportion
  • Full: This mode is mainly designed for 16:9 programs. When a 16:9 program is received, the picture is stretched taller to fill the screen without distorting the main portion of the image. If a 4:3 program is sensed, the picture is stretched wider to fill the screen, but not taller. In each case, none of the picture is hidden.
    • Note: Full cannot be used with 1080i signals.
  • Theater Wide 1: picture is non-uniformly enlarged; the center of the picture remains close to its true proportion, but the left and right edges are stretched wider to fill the screen
  • Theater Wide 2: entire picture is uniformly enlarged
  • Theater Wide 3: picture is non-uniformly enlarged; the picture is stretched wider to fill the width of the screen and stretched slightly taller

Picture Modes: You can select one of the following picture modes:

  • Sports: bright and dynamic picture
  • Standard: standard picture setting
  • Movie: movie-like picture setting
  • Preference: allows you to adjust and store the following settings: contrast, brightness, color, tint, sharpness, and color temperature

Dolby Virtual Sound: The Dolby Virtual Sound feature allows you to enjoy virtual surround sound from the TV's speakers. If you connect a device with analog an audio output to one of the standard analog audio inputs, and the input source is encoded with Dolby Surround or Dolby Digital, the Dolby Virtual simulates Dolby Surround Sound from the TV's speakers. Dolby Virtual can be turned on/off in the menu as desired.

Stable Sound: When the signal source is changed, this feature limits the highest volume level to prevent extreme changes in volume.

SRS WOW: WOW is a special combination of SRS Labs audio technologies that creates a surround sound experience with deep, rich bass from stereo sound sources, making the TV audio sound fuller, richer, and wider. WOW consists of three features:

  • SRS 3D: turns on/off the surround sound effect
  • FOCUS: turns on/off the vocal emphasis effect
  • TruBass: selects the desired bass expansion level (High, Low, or Off)

On Timer: The on timer switches the television on after a specified amount of time. The on timer can be adjusted from 10 minutes to 12 hours in 10-minute increments.

Sleep Timer: The sleep timer switches the television off after a specified amount of time. The sleep timer can be adjusted from 10 minutes to 3 hours in 10-minute increments.

Quick Restart: With the Quick Restart feature set to On, the TV stays in standby mode for several minutes after the TV is turned off. If the TV is turned on from standby mode, the full picture appears immediately.

Labeling Channels: Channel labels appear above the on-screen channel number display each time you turn on the TV, change a channel, or press Recall. You can choose any four characters to identify a channel.

Lamp Mode: You can select either the Hi Bright or Low Power mode. The Hi Bright mode is useful for situations where additional picture brightness is desired (such as in a room with bright lighting). The Low Power mode reduces wear on the projection lamp and using it should result in longer lamp life.

Remote Control

Multibrand Remote: The supplied remote is pre-programmed to operate this unit and a number of functions on other brands of components, including VCRs, cable boxes, CD players, receivers, cassette players, laserdisc players, DVD players, and  satellite receivers. A "Light" button allows you to illuminate all the buttons for five seconds, making for easy operation in the dark.

Inputs and Outputs Notes

HDMI Inputs: Each input consists of a single HDMI jack. The HDMI jack can accommodate a copy-protected digital connection (HDCP) to other devices (such as digital set-top boxes) that have compatible interfaces. The HDMI jack is compliant with the EIA/CEA-861/861B standard and is not intended for use with personal computers. If you want to connect a DVI-compatible device, you will need an HDMI-to-DVI adapter cable. Since DVI does not carry audio signals, a stereo audio input is provided for each HDMI input. In addition to the HDMI-to-DVI adapter cable, you will also need stereo audio cables.

Note: The HDMI jack will accept 1080i, 720p, 480p, and 480i signals.

ColorStream HD High-resolution Component Video Inputs: The component video inputs will accept 1080i, 720p, 480p, and 480i signals.

great TV

Written By Gurley, Birmingham, AL on Thursday, May 12, 2005

Like many I researched HDTV sets long before I made a purchase. This is a great TV, if you do some research on this unit you will hear nothing but good things, with the exeption that SDTV channels supposedly look "horrific" on this set. I just don't see it, are the sdtv channels noticabely different than the HD channels yes of course. Are some sdtv stations better than others; sure. Guess what that is the common denominator with all the HD sets.

I am very pleased with this TV IMOP this is the best set in this price range. Bottom line: SDTV veiwing is Ok (comparable to any other 50" + set), HD veiwing is immaculate. Buy this TV

Toshiba 52HMX84

Written By beechers, Orlando, FL on Saturday, February 26, 2005

Impressed. The brilliance of the DLP is good for viewing in all interior light conditions. The six a/v inputs are sufficient thanks to 3 composite video and S-Video inputs. It's light enough at 80 some pounds and the depth shallow enough just over 15" to fit almost anywhere. Remote is user friendly and it illuminates. TV speakers are ok. A good reciever makes for great theater sound with decent speakers. Picture size is perfect for my 15'X 15' family room. Overall, happy.
