Our take on the Toshiba DVR620

by Loren Barstow
Toshiba

Enjoy the flexibility of recording to either DVD or VHS with the Toshiba DVR620. It combines a DVD recorder and VCR in one space-saving package. Just connect a cable box or satellite receiver to capture your favorite TV shows. Internal dubbing from VHS to DVD, and vice versa, lets you back up your home movies and other non-copy-protected material. A flip-down door reveals front-panel inputs that provide a quick and easy way to record from other sources, such as a camcorder. And if you have an HDTV with an HDMI input, the DVR620 can upconvert DVDs to better match your set's high-resolution screen, so all your discs will look their best.

Toshiba DVR620

Written By Joe, Framingham, MA on Thursday, May 08, 2014
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I replaced much older single function units with this very nice combo unit and as it is newer technology it has many nice feature. The one thing it would be nice if it did is commercial skip on play back. It records and plays back DVD's and tapes and connects to my TV for very acceptable playback. I have it connected to it's own antenna converter so I can record one channel while watching a different one on the TV. The Team at Crutchfield were very knowledgeable and helpful when I was researching this unit.
Pros:
Good playback of existing tapes and of tapes that it records. Records and plays DVDs. Relatively easy to setup at least as easy as these things ever are.
Cons:
No commercial skip

Great upgrade

Written By Davisele, Saint Augustine FL on Saturday, March 22, 2014
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I bought A new 3-D Smart TV and realized then that old school electronics did not have a connection point nor compatable with new school electronics. Here I had a cabinet full of old school Vidio cassette movies. Way too many to copy & to replace all of them, well they were older movies & next to impossible to find. Then I came across the Toshiba VCR w/upgrade to new school electronic, HDMI connection. Plays the tapes great , and a bonus, picture is better than any VCR player I've used in the past. It has the ability to record the VC tapes to the DVD in the same unit with a touch of a button. Thanks Toshiba, great component.
Pros:
Very easy set-up, great picture, very good price.
Cons:
None, it's all GOOD!

Caution

Written By El Cid, South Carolina on Tuesday, February 25, 2014

Not as good as previous model. The previous DVR610 permitted connecting to cable box and then connecting DVR to a TV. Could watch cable without turning DVR on. The new 620 requires that the DVR be turned on in order to watch cable unless you have a direct connection between the cable box and the TV, which I am unable to do. Even then, you have to switch back and forth between inputs, which is annoying. Also, Toshiba customer service via website and telephone is worst I have ever experienced. The "tech support" people can only pull up the manual on their computers and regurgitate back what it says. I can read myself. Also, horrendously long wait times for anyone to answer at all. The website does not permit contacting Toshiba with a question, unless you wish to purchase something.
Pros:
Does a great job of recording and creating DVD's and copying Tapes to DVD's.
Cons:
Somewhat complicated instuctions, but probably because it does so much. Toshiba Tech support and customer service are useless. Have to turn unit on if want to watch cable, unless you can connect Cable box directly to TV. That requires switching back and forth between inputs selections though.

Don't buy this

Written By MC MERNA, Irvington, NJ on Wednesday, January 29, 2014

this dvd/vdr recorder sucks. it was almost impossible to hook up. it has no internal tuner. so you have to have all these stupid plugs to make it work. then even finally after i got it hooked up which by the way took mee almost two weeks to figure out i had to make special place on my television for the input section. my advice always buy a dvd/vcr wih a built in tuner t will be much easier to hook up. sorry i bought this
Pros:
none
Cons:
hard to hook up no internal tuner needs to many plugs instruction booklet is obscure

Toshiba DVR620

Written By Will, Fallston, MD on Friday, December 20, 2013
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I purchased this because I wanted to copy VHS to DVD. It does exactly that with ease. After converting our VHS tapes, I'll have this extra device taking up space, but I guess it will be helpful for the occasional VHS tapes, including the copyrighted ones that will not dub. The DVD player feature will probably not get much use, since I am used to simply using my Blu-ray player.
Pros:
Easily converts VHS to DVD
Cons:
None.

DVD/VCR

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Purchased to convert old VCR tapes to DVDs. Works as advertised, but COMPLICATED to use! How come they don't sell one with a tuner inside?
Pros:
Flexible in its capabilities. Gets the job done.
Cons:
Not intuitive at all. Needed to have the manual open to several different pages, and follow complex instructions carefully to work. I cannot hook up this device to TV without an additional tuner!??

Toshiba DVR620

Written By jon, Hurley, NY on Friday, May 31, 2013
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This is a fine combo VCR/DVD player although there are not many choices available. DVD playback is excellent and connections are easy to set up. Operation is fairly intuitive via the remote control.
Pros:
Excellent manual, very easy to follow. All connections are clearly labeled and easy to understand.
Cons:
VCR playback is not as good as the dedicated VCRs that I have had in the past, even with the HDMI connection. Still, the alternative would be to have an old VCR as well as a separate DVD component, an inconvenience.

If you don't need a tuner this VCR/DVD Combo works fine,. You need an HDMI connector to go from Combo box to the TV. When I hooked it up my picture was pixelated which I solved with a signal amplifier.
Pros:
Good picture. Handles both VCR and DVD. Called Crutchfield for help with cables needed.
Cons:
No tuner. Must watch same channel that you are recording.

Toshiba DVR620

Written By Izzy, Blackstone, VA on Monday, January 14, 2013
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I'm on my 3rd (DVR620) to date each one has had the same problem...a clicking/ticking sound, each one made it less often then the previous one, but still there. The sound comes and goes machine on or off, disc tray full or empty. The first unit also had problems recognizing the it was hooked up to a HD TV via HDMI cable, second unit word fine except for the noises, now after a couple of weeks the current unit HDMI video input signal doesn't work, audio side works fine. Never had any of these problem with my old Panasonic which I had for at least 10 years, died after a power outage. Best thing I can say is I'm glad I brought it from here...GREAT customer service, rapid return service!!!
Pros:
Auto finalize.
Cons:
Manual poorly written.

Toshiba DVR620

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This is my second Toshiba DVR620. The first one is still working, but my husband and I want to be sure to have a machine that can record and play both VCR tapes and DVDs, so we bought a spare. In addition to making tapes and discs of movies and current television shows, we also are putting old tapes, mostly family home movies, on DVD. This machine does it all to our satisfaction.

Toshiba DVR620

Written By BOB G, Newark,DE on Monday, November 12, 2012
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I purchased The Toshiba DVR620 because my Sony unit had a power burn out. After a careful review of what is currently availabe,I decided to check out what was hot on Ebay.I soon decided I wouldn't have any cushon to fall back on if anything went wrong.I realized the only place to get a good product, free tech support and free shipping was CRUTCHFIELD.I bought the Toshiba DVR620 simply because it had the ability to dub in both VCR & DVD and vice versa.I spent a few days reading the manual.I called tech support for a review of connecting to a cable TV setup. As always,in a few short minutes,I was talking to a tech who was more than willing to walk me through connecting the unit.I had all the info I needed and had my DVR620 working in a very short time period.Being a telephone tech,I understood everything I was told.and had all the info I needed to start using the DVD/VCR.My tech also took a moment to tell me to call back anytime I needed assistance. After near two weeks of playing with the VCR/DVD,I am convinced I made a great choice in what I purchased and whom I purchased it from.I also have stereo equipment I bought from CRUTCHFIELD about 15 years ago and all is working great.Thank YOU
Pros:
Does what I need it to do and thensome
Cons:
No tuner

Great Machine

Written By Karel, Cortez, CO on Sunday, October 14, 2012
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

It is a great machine, it will let us record part of the programs we like. Sorry it won't allow us to record from a regular digital antenna. Haven't had time to try all of the features. Would always like to see larger displays for us "old" people with poor eyesight.
Cons:
Needs larger displays for seeing from a distance

Works but must keep TV on to record

Written By Mikethedrummer, Toms River, NJ on Wednesday, September 12, 2012
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Works as good as any other combo but be warned. I have tried several DVD recorders, some combo recorders, and none of them will record unless you keep the TV on all the time. The content providers (cable, satellite, etc.) are building in content protection called HDCP. They want you to rent a DVR or use Tivo which records to a temporary device as opposed to a permanent device DVD. I have talked to many tech support staff, read many blogs, and there is no way around it. The Crutchfield tech support staff were very knowledgeable but the problem was not resolved. I returned the unit just like all the others.
Pros:
Easy to use, nice menus, does what is expected
Cons:
Will not record unless you keep the TV on all the time.

Very Happy wih Toshiba DVD/VHS recorder

Written By heff, newark, DE on Sunday, July 01, 2012
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Crutchfield service was excellent. Previously had a Sony DVD/VHS recorder, which was almost impossible to use and had many deficiencies. The Toshiba unit was easy to setup. It worked flawlessly. Quality is excellent. I have recorded from VHS and video camera onto DVD, including some editing, and it went very well. No issues or difficulties. Instruction manual is easy to follow, well organized. Everything on the recorder has worked exactly as described in the manual. Remote is easy to use; well labeled and organized.
Pros:
Quality. Ease of use. Capability to transfer from VHS, video cameras and other sources.
Cons:
None thus far.

Good Choice

Written By Rolo, Alexandria, Va on Monday, February 07, 2011
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

For me this was a great purchase. I wanted to copy some old VHS tapes to disc before
it was too late and this machine has done it very well. I've copied over 240 hours of
tapes since I bought the DVR620 with no errors or problems. I've also recorded about
15 hours of shows directly from TV. It doesn't copy with HD sharpness but the quality of
everything so far has been great. The quality of audio on the final discs has usually been
clearer and louder than the original in many cases. I think the instruction manual is
generally good and relatively easy to follow, at least for what i've needed to do. There
are qute a few other VHS/DVD combo choices out there but I am really happy that I
chose this one.

A great machine!

Written By Warren, Tubac, AZ on Thursday, August 20, 2009
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The Toshiba DVR620 is a marvel! With your technical help, it was a snap to hook up to my Toshiba HDTV. The set-up procedure went flawlessly and I have enjoyed watching and making my own DVD's, primarily using movies from Dish Network as my source material. The best feature (compared to my old, un-named DVD recorder) is the automatic finalization the unit provides. I have used other DVD recorders for more than 5 years and this one beats all the others hands down.
Thanks for the recommendation.

on this dvd/vcr combo. does it have a built-in burner? What we are trying to do is record for at least 4 hours on one disc. What disc would we need to purchase to record this length? thank you so much for your help. [ squeaky  Jul 18, 2014 ]
5 answers
  • Regarding the Toshiba DVR 620 The DVR does not include a burner. When I ordered a 25 blank disc set for recording I was told that all of the discs that they sell are for 2 HOUR recordings only. I hope this information was useful to you. [ VINCENT J   Aug 02, 2014 ]
  • Yes it has a built in burner for recording. I use DVD - R But can use most DVD disks , DVD plus R DVD - R. DVD -RW and You can set it for 2- 4- or 6 hr recording but 2hr recording makes the Best recordings. [ ALVIN   Jul 21, 2014 ]
  • Yes, it does have a built in disk burner. It works very well and will actually record up to 8 hours on most DVD discs. I use mainly DVD + R, 16X, 4.7 GB. Hope this helps. [ MARSHALL W   Jul 20, 2014 ]
  • This Toshiba does have a built-in burner. I have had good luck with Verbatim DVD-R disks but I don't know if you can record for 4 hours. (You may want to contact Verbatim and ask.) Other, popular, brands have been unreliable for me. [ JONATHAN M   Jul 20, 2014 ]
  • Sorry I wish could answer this but I only watch movies basically . [ ROSE   Jul 19, 2014 ]
I have a 2 dual deck SONY VX560. Will it play DVDs recorded on that are finialized. Will it record on unfinalized DVDs with some recording from SONY unit on it? [ Tom  May 03, 2014 ]
6 answers
  • The 620 should play discs that are finalized. It WON'T play unfinalized "-R" discs from other machines even if it's from a Toshiba (won't play unfinalized "-R" from my older DVR650). It might play unfinalized "+R" discs from another machine since that is Toshiba's preferred format (same as SONY). Hope this helps. Neil W [ NEIL W   May 08, 2014 ]
  • I don't know. [ SAUL   May 06, 2014 ]
  • So far only use this unit to play my VCRs. So can't answer your question. John [ JOHN   May 06, 2014 ]
  • I had no problem playing DVD's I finalized on my DVD player and laptop.I'm not familiar with your SONY equipment. [ JOHN   May 06, 2014 ]
  • I am sorry, I can not answer your question as the SONY VX560 I bought was a gift for an overseas friend. Hope you can find the answer elsewhere. [ CARLOS A   May 05, 2014 ]
  • It will play DVDs from any device, as for recording on a disc that has not been finalized I can't answer that. I have only converted a few VHS to DVD and don't have that much experience with it. My DVR620 mainly plays DVDs in the kitchen. [ PHILLIP   May 03, 2014 ]
I don't have cable or satellite but have a high defintion TV antenna. Can I record programs from the antenna reception? [ Tom Z  Apr 27, 2014 ]
1 answer
  • Yes, easy. First you have to do the wiring so that you can see the TV program from the Toshba. Routing the antenna thru the Toshiba to the TV is easiest. Then on the right side of the controller look for timer program and follow the prompts. When done press enter, and timer set (bottom row) Timer set turns off the Toshiba until it is time to start the recording. (Don't forget to put a new dvd or a tape in the machine first) [ RICHARD   Apr 28, 2014 ]
this unit will allow me to record from TV shows? [ Brian  Mar 03, 2014 ]
6 answers
  • yes you can record tv shows run cables from the input of your cable box to out put on tv [ LEONARD   Mar 15, 2014 ]
  • Easily. Just set your tv so that you are viewing through the Toshiba and then just start recording [ RICHARD   Mar 05, 2014 ]
  • Yes, it will record from any source through its inputs, including TV shows. However, it does not have an internal TV tuner. [ ERIK W   Mar 04, 2014 ]
  • Yes. TV shows can be recorded directly from your TV as they are broadcast. Press the Record button after choosing VHS or DVD on the remote (or DVR620 console) and the Record Mode (length of time/quality). You can also set the DVR620 to record a program at a specific time and day using the Timer Programming in the Setup menu. If you have recorded programs on a DVR from your cable company, you can record those programs to either a DVD disc or to a VHS tape in your Toshiba DVR620. The quality is much better using a DVD than a tape. Set up the DVR620 first. Begin playing the cable company DVR program then press the Record button on the DVR620 remote or console. You can manually stop the DVR620 recording when the program is finished or you can press the Record button to set the length of time remaining to be recorded so that it stops automatically. Press the Record button once for 30 minutes, twice for 60 minutes and so on. The length of time will be displayed on the DVR620 console. NOTE: Since the DVR620 does not have its own tuner, it will record only the channel that is set to display on your TV. Do not try to watch other channels while it is recording. However, if your cable company DVR allows you to record two programs at once, you can set it to record one program ahead of time, then switch to the TV channel or previously recorded program that you want to copy to the DVR620. While your TV must be set for the correct channel, it does not have to be actually turned on to record. I have cables connected as follows: (1) cable company DVR OUT to DVR620 IN (audio/video - red/white/yellow), (2) DVR620 OUT to TV IN (HDMI), (3) cable company DVR OUT to TV IN (HDMI). There may be other combinations that also work. [ Judy M   Mar 04, 2014 ]
  • This Toshiba will allow TV recording to a tape or blank dvd. It does not allow recording of televised copyrighted material, so if a particular TV program is copyrighted it will not let you record to the DVR. [ VINCENT J   Mar 04, 2014 ]
  • Hi Brian, So far I have only used mine to watch DVD's and also to dub old VHS tapes to DVD (which it has done a great job with). But the owner's manual has a whole section about recording from TV so I assume it can do that as well. [ PATTY   Mar 04, 2014 ]
My house is wired with a single RF wire to all rooms which makes it easy to hook up to any TV. I looked at this box at a store and found it wants the usual 3-wire input. What device can I obtain to split out my single wire to the 3 input leads? Gordon J [ Gordon  Jan 23, 2014 ]
1 answer
  • This will depend largely on how your system is set-up. I would recommend reaching out to an Advisor by phone (1-800-324-9695) or online chat. They will be able to discuss your system set-up and give you the details on how you may be able to use this unit in your system. [ Jeff Staff  Jan 24, 2014 ]
Dores this record from VCR to DVD? [ Jeff  Jan 04, 2014 ]
8 answers
  • yes [ LEONARD   Jan 18, 2014 ]
  • Yes I had a lot of the big VCR home movies and i recorded them to DVD. Easy to use. [ BRENDA   Jan 06, 2014 ]
  • Yes, I purchased this last year and have recently used it several times to transfer old VHS tape material to DVD's. It did a great job. I do highly recommend reading the owner's manual section for instructions. Make sure after you've burned the new DVD that you also read about finalizing the disc (also in the owner's manual) so that it can be played in other DVD players. It's not highly complicated, but following the instructions helps avoid frustration. [ PATTY   Jan 05, 2014 ]
  • Yes, it does a very good job. However, my experience is that if the VHS tapes have not been used in a long time, they need to be fast-forwarded and then rewound using a separate tape re-winder machine first because the sitting tapes makes the tape very tight and might not work if the rewind is not done first. I found my re-wind machine on an online auction site for a very reasonable price. [ MARSHALL W   Jan 05, 2014 ]
  • I don't know. I've never been able to make it do anything. Sorry! [ GREG A   Jan 05, 2014 ]
  • Yes this is a very good VCR to DVD recorder. In short I think it is a very good Recorder [ ALVIN   Jan 05, 2014 ]
  • Yes, according to the manual. I haven't done it myself. [ JONATHAN M   Jan 05, 2014 ]
  • Sorry have not tried that yet [ MARK   Jan 05, 2014 ]
