Our take on the Toshiba HD-A3
with 300 and The Bourne Identity

Make the HD-A3 a part of your high-definition home theater and enjoy breathtaking images that are even sharper and more vibrant than HD television broadcasts. This third-generation HD DVD player from Toshiba delivers a crisp picture with rich colors and elaborate detail, bringing movies to life like never before.

HD DVD: true high-def video from a disc
While regular DVDs look good on an HDTV, they can't deliver true high-def video, even if you're using an "upconverting" DVD player. On the other hand, HD DVD has been designed from the ground up with high-definition television sets in mind. HD DVD discs have a much greater storage capacity than regular DVDs, and can hold multiple hours of true high-definition material. And the HD DVD format uses newer, more advanced forms of video compression that allow for smoother, more natural images.

Better sound from your home theater system
HD DVD discs let you enjoy higher-definition audio, too, including advanced new versions of Dolby® Digital and DTS® surround sound. The 'A3 can decode Dolby TrueHD surround soundtracks, which employ lossless compression to deliver a remarkably faithful reproduction of the movie theater experience.

Compatible with your current DVD and CD collections
The versatile HD-A3 can also play standard DVDs and CDs, as well as home-burned CD-Rs and CD-RWs. It can even upconvert standard DVDs to a resolution that better matches your high-definition TV, so your DVD collection will look better than ever. And the 'A3's sleek chassis and high-gloss black acrylic faceplate make it a perfect match for Toshiba's REGZA™ flat-panel televisions.

Features

HD-DVD Overview: HD-DVD is a new high-definition disc format that is up to six times the resolution of standard DVD-video and is designed from the ground up to maximize the viewing experience available from today's HDTVs. HD-DVD discs and players offer several advantages over the standard DVD format:
  • Better picture quality: HD-DVD is a true high-definition format offering video at 1080i or 720p resolution. While standard DVDs look very good on an HDTV, they don't provide a high-definition signal (not even when you use an up-converting DVD player). HD-DVD delivers an extraordinarily sharp, clean, detailed picture, with deeper, richer colors.
  • Better sound quality: HD-DVD offers the same multi-channel sound formats - Dolby Digital and DTS - you're accustomed to with DVD. But HD-DVD goes further, offering advanced new versions of Dolby Digital and DTS formats that will give soundtracks startling clarity and dimensionality.
  • Much greater storage capacity: What makes HD-DVD's superior picture and sound possible is the much higher storage capacity of HD-DVD discs. A single-layer HD-DVD can hold 15 gigabytes of data, which is over three times the amount a standard DVD can hold. (Dual-layer HD-DVDs hold 30 gigabytes.) This increased storage capacity allows HD-DVD to fit several hours of high-definition video and high-resolution multi-channel audio, plus the added features and material that require multiple discs with standard DVD.
  • Compatibility with your current disc collections: To ensure backward-compatibility with your existing library of discs, HD-DVD players actually use a dual-laser mechanism: a blue laser for playing high-definition HD-DVD discs, and a conventional red laser for playing DVDs and audio CDs.
  • Internet access: HD-DVD players include an Ethernet jack for use with a high-speed Internet connection.

Slim Cabinet Design: The Toshiba HD-A3 has a slim profile design and a depth advantage that allows them to fit into almost any home entertainment environment. The player measures only 16.9375" wide x 2.375" tall x 14.125" deep (including cables).

Compatible Discs: The HD-A3 is capable of playing back the following disc formats:

  • HD-DVD
  • DVD-Video
  • DVD-R, DVD-R DL, DVD-RW
  • Audio CD
  • CD-R & CD-RW (CD-DA audio only)

Note: This unit is not capable of MP3 or WMA playback and does not support Blu-ray discs.

HDMI Output with Up-conversion: The HD-A3 features an HDMI output which provides a high definition signal to your compatible HDTV when playing back HD-DVD discs. HDMI output resolution options include 480i, 480p, 720p and1080i. It also has the ability to up-convert a standard DVD signal to any of those resolutions and pass it through its HDMI video output to match the native resolution of your television.

Component Video: The player's component video output allows the video signal to be sent from the DVD player to a component video equipped interlaced or progressive scan TV. Component video resolution options include 480i, 480p, 720p, and 1080i. When this connection is utilized with today's HD-compatible sets, typical NTSC artifacts-like video noise, dot crawl, and flicker-are virtually eliminated, resulting in a low-noise, highly detailed picture with color purity.

Simultaneous Video Output: The HD-DVD player supports simultaneous output of video on its HDMI and component video ports.

Auto Video Adjust: The HDMI output can be set to change automatically to match the maximum available resolution of your display. If you have the HDMI and component video cables both connected the resolution on the component output will also change when the HDMI output auto-adjusts.

Picture Settings: The Toshiba HD-A3 offers the following picture adjustments through its Picture Setting screen.

  • TV Shape: select between 16:9, 4:3 or 4:3 letter box
  • Enhanced Black Level: select On to adjust the black level to a deep richer black
  • RGB Output Range: Standard or Enhanced to match display
  • Picture Mode: select between Film, Video, or Auto
  • Resolution: 480i, 480p, 720p, or 1080i

Slow Motion: You can play a video forward in slow-motion at a 1/4x, 1/2x, or 1/8x of normal speed.

Resume Play: Resume play allows you to resume playback of a disc from the point where you last stopped. The stopping point is cleared when the Stop button is pressed more than once or the disc tray is opened.

Title Search: Title Search allows you enter the number of the Title, Chapter and/or elapsed time of a scene you want to view on a disc and then directly go to that spot on the disc.

Repeat Mode: The Toshiba HD-A3 features disc, title, and chapter repeat; and also offers A-B repeat.

Camera Angle: If a scene has been recorded with multiple angles, you can change the camera angle of the scene you are watching on the disc.

Advance Navigation: Select HD-DVD movie titles offer you new and unique ways to interact with your movie like never before. These titles allow you to watch and listen to the film makers explain how they created their vision, all while the movie continues to play. The unit's Advance Navigation feature allows you to watch and listen as the director gives exclusive behind-the-scenes details while watching that same incredible action sequence.

Cursor Function: Future HD-DVD discs may include game software and drawing software. If they do, this function lets you use the Cursor button on the remote to move the onscreen cursor, allowing you to interact with the software.

Language Settings: The HD-A3 allows you to change the language of the Disc Menu, Subtitles, and Audio track (as supported by the disc). The player's on-screen menu can be set to English, French, German, Spanish, Italian, Dutch, Russian, Swedish, Finnish, Greek, and Turkish.

Digital Audio Processing: The Toshiba HD-A3 features an Analog Devices high-performance SHARC Digital Signal Processor to provide you with incredible audio detail.

Surround Sound Formats: This HD-DVD player supports Dolby Digital, DTS, Dolby Digital Plus, Dolby TrueHD and DTS HD (core only). The HDMI output will transfer all these surround formats while the optical digital output will transfer the Dolby Digital, DTS, and two channel PCM.

Dolby TrueHD: Dolby TrueHD is a lossless coding technology that supports up to 8 channels of multi-channel surround sound, the reproduced sound is true to the original source bit-for-bit.

Audio Settings: The HD-DVD player provides the following audio adjustments within its Audio settings screen.

  • Digital out SPDIF: Choose the digital audio format that is passed through the optical output:
    • Bitstream: when the amplifier is equipped with built-in Dolby Digital, DTS, or MPEG decoders
    • PCM: 2-channel stereo
  • Digital out HDMI: Choose the digital audio format that is passed through the HDMI output:
    • Auto: select when connected to an HDMI device equipped with built-in Dolby Digital, DTS, MPEG or linear PCM decoder
    • PCM: select when connected to an HDMI device that has multi-channel output and a Dolby Digital Plus, Dolby TrueHD, or DTS-HD decoder
    • Downmixed PCM: select when a 2-channel digital stereo amplifier is connected to this player
  • Dynamic Range Control: the DRC function makes faint sounds easier to hear, even at lower volume, choose from On, Off, or Auto; only available for HD-DVDs and DVDs recorded in Dolby Digital, Dolby Digital Plus or Dolby Digital TrueHD format
  • Dialogue Enhancement: increases the dialog volume during playback, only available for Dolby Digital recorded HD-DVDs or DVDs

Internet Connection: By utilizing the rear-panel Ethernet port, you can connect the player to the Internet via an always-on broadband connection. Future HD-DVD discs will enable you to access special HD-DVD sites. If an HD-DVD site includes content such as movie trailers, you can watch the content on the player via the Internet if your internet connection provides sufficient bandwidth. You may also use the Internet connection feature to update the player's firmware.

Extension Port: The front panel USB extension port may be used in the future for additional control options.

Parental Lock: The Parental Lock feature allows you to use to activate an 8-level rating system protected by a 4-digit password to limit what discs can be played back on your player.

Dimmer: From the remote control you can dim the display of the unit or turn the display completely off.

Screen Saver: When activated a Screen Saver will appear if a picture is paused continuously for about 20 minutes.

Auto Power Off: When activated the Auto Power Off feature will turn the player off if the picture is paused for about 20 minutes.

Remote Control: The HD-A3 comes supplied with an IR wireless remote control from DVD operation only.

Inputs and Outputs Notes

1080i HDMI (High Definition Multimedia Interface): The unit's HDMI output simplifies A/V connections by carrying video and audio in one cable. This unit features HDCP copyright protection technology, and must be connected to an HDCP-compliant device. If your TV has a DVI input instead of an HDMI input, you can connect this unit to your TV using an HDMI-to-DVI adapter. You will also need to connect audio cables to the player because DVI is a video only cable.

Video Output: In addition to the unit's HDMI output, the HD-A3 features a component video and composite video output.

Audio Out: The unit features an optical digital output for transferring a Dolby Digital/DTS bitstream or 2-channel stereo PCM and is also equipped with a pair or RCA analog stereo outputs.

LAN: The rear-panel Ethernet port gives you access to Internet-based content on some HD-DVDs and possible firmware updates.

Extension Port: The HD-A3 has a front-panel USB Extension port hidden behind a fold-down door. The USB extension port may be used in the future for additional control options or firmware updates. Future control options may include extra storage for downloadable content off of HD-DVD discs.

Note: The USB port is simply a gateway interface for the player and its movies so their potential is limited to downloadable disc content.

Toshiba HD-A3
with 300 and The Bourne Identity

Written By rsands, Lansdale, PA on Sunday, February 17, 2008

This machine exceeded my expectations playing DVD+R, even +R Dual Layer. I Can buy HD movies with HD on one side and DVD on the other, thus not worry about who wins the format war. Since the player is apparently based on PC technology, it does take 20 or 30 seconds to turn on and load, after that it works great and gives an excellent picture.

Awesome

Written By TTH, Martinsville Virginia on Saturday, January 19, 2008

I love this machine; the Ethernet jack provides so many options to the movie studios for special features. I spent so much time enjoying all the web enabled special features of Transformers. The built in Ethernet jack also makes firmware updates a snap. The day I setup my player, I checked for and installed the newest firmware from my couch with a remote, this is awesome, no need to download on a computer, burn a disc then put that disc in the player. I can't make any comparisons to Blu-Ray but 1080 is 1080, the picture and sound are great. I really hate that sides are being chosen in this "format war". The thing is that it would be nice if both formats survived so that consumers could make their own choice. There are benefits to both formats. For me the price, standardization and the HD DVD only options make me lean toward the HD DVD camp.

Get what you pay for

Written By GARY, Los Angeles, Ca. on Thursday, January 10, 2008

Got the HD-A3 because of price. I received the player on Tuesday and will be returning it on Friday. I have yet to get it to play a HD DVD without stopping or now the audio stops and the movie continues. I called Crutchfield and Toshiba, neither were able to help. The unit has the lastest update (1.3). I will look to replace it with (I hope) a better model later.

Great Player

Written By Wayne, Fontana, Ca. on Friday, December 07, 2007

This is a great player at a great price.

Make sure to download & print the PDF file for 5 Free Mail-in movies, as ALL Toshiba HD-DVD players are on the list.

We've spent a week watching HD-DVD's and love it. We've received several rentals through Netflix, and it's fun. The only bad thing about rental HD-DVD's on this player is that when they find a bad scratch, it actually starts at the beginning of the movie again. Other than that, we did a Side-By-Side viewing with a Blu-Ray, and the HD-DVD is clearly a better picture.

Blu-Ray has more participating studios as of December 2007, so there are less HD-DVD titles, but I'm sure this will change in the future.

If you decide to buy both HD-DVD, and Blu-Ray as I did, you'll need a digital receiver that accepts HDMI, and has HDMI switching. My receiver has 2 HDMI inputs, and 1 of them is for the Digital cable. If you need a 3rd, I bought a push-button HDMI selector switch. That way if I'm watching one player, I push the button to 1. If I'm watching the other, I push it to 2. You have to go to the player to put your movie in anyway.

As the players get cheaper, you will want both HD-DVD & Blu-Ray. The combo units are not really an option as they aren't really true HD-DVD players. They fake it.
