Toshiba

Our take on the Toshiba MEG50AS

Serious storage! When you tuck Toshiba's MOBILPHILE into your shirt pocket, you're stowing up to an incredible 166 hours' worth of music!

The MEG50AS works a little differently from conventional MP3 portables: instead of storing your tunes on a flash memory card, it uses a removable 5GB PC Card hard disk drive which can hold a lot more audio. But, like other MP3 players, it's still compact and easy to carry! You can also make custom playlists and transfer them to the MOBILPHILE, just like you would with any other MP3 portable.

Speaking of transferring music, this versatile player gives you two handy options: either connect its USB interface to your PC's USB port (the player supports both USB 1.1 and 2.0), or insert its PC Card directly into a Type II PC Card slot on your computer. Either way, transfer is fast and easy! The included Toshiba software encrypts your music for compatibility with the MOBILPHILE, but there's no "check-in" or "check-out" process, like with some other MP3 players' software.

Features

Overview: The Toshiba MEG50AS Mobilphile is a portable digital audio player that allows you to download and play MP3 and WMA audio files as well as WAV (PCM audio) files. The music files are stored on a removable 5-gigabyte Type II PC Card Hard Disk Drive, providing up to 83 hours of music (at 128 kbps). The built-in rechargeable battery gives you approximately 18 hours of playback time.

Storage Medium: The supplied 5-GB PC Card HDD can record MP3 and WMA files at bit rates of 16 to 320 kbps and sampling rates of 22.05kHz to 48kHz. WAV files are recorded at 16 kbps. Additional PC Card HDDs are available in 2GB and 5GB sizes. Dimensions: W=2-1/8", H=3-3/8", D=3/16"

USB Port: You can connect the Mobilphile to your computer via the supplied USB cable. The unit offers full compatibility with USB 1.1 and the high-speed USB 2.0 interface with the supplied Mobilphile software. A transfer rate of nearly 480 kbps lets you download songs more quickly and efficiently; you could potentially download 1000 five-minute songs in 10 minutes, depending upon the processing power of the connected CPU. A standard CD can be downloaded to the HDD card in approximately 30 seconds.

Operating System: The player operates on an on-board Linux OS operating system. Firmware updates are available from the manufacturer's website.

Backlit LCD Display: The Mobilphile features a 1.8" LCD display with a blue backlight. The length of time the backlight stays on can be selected in the menu: 5 sec, 10 sec, 20 sec, or always on.

Status Bar: The top portion of the display shows the current status of the player in each of the menu screens. Icons in the Play screen indicate current playback status, play mode, equalizer mode, hold status, and remaining battery power. The Navi screen icons show the current Folder name and battery status. The Menu screen also shows battery status in the status bar.

Controls: The Mobilphile can be controlled by the top panel buttons on the unit (select button, menu button, navi button, volume +/-) or by the supplied in-line remote control (Volume, Skip, Equalizer, Play/Pause). The unit and remote control each have a hold button to prevent unintentional operations. The Mobilphile features an electronic volume control with a 16-segment volume adjustment bar that appears on the display anytime the Volume + or Volume - buttons are pressed.

File Navigation: To gain access to music files, the Navi button allows you to select files, folders and playlists. In the menu, you can choose whether you want the Navi Display to show the file name or tag information.

Play Modes: The Mobilphile features the following playback modes:

  • Play All
  • Play Folder
  • Repeat One Song
  • Repeat Folder
  • Randomize Folder
  • All Random
  • 10-second Intro
  • One-minute Intro

Equalizer Modes: There are 4 Equalizer mode settings:

  • Flat: Reproduces the original sounds faithfully
  • Bass+: Expands low frequencies
  • Bass++: Further expands low frequencies
  • Loudness: Emphasizes low and high frequencies over a broad range; especially useful during operation at low volume

Power Requirements: The Mobilphile features a built-in advanced lithium ion rechargeable battery providing approximately 18 hours of continuous playback time (when playing 44.1kHz, 128 kbps audio data in WMA format at room temperature, with the backlight off and with the volume set to the medium level in the selectable range). You can charge the battery and power the player with the supplied AC adapter. The battery can be recharged up to approximately 500 times. (No battery charging time information is available.)

Auto Power Off: Power will be automatically turned off if no operation is performed for a selected amount of time, except when audio data is being played back or when the USB port is connected. In the menu, you can select 3 minutes, 5 minutes, 10 minutes, or No auto power off.
