Overview

Our take on the Nikon AF-S Micro Nikkor 105mm f/2.8G ED VR

Nikon macro lens for detailed closeups

Shoot incredibly detailed photos with this macro lens from Nikon. Its close focusing capability lets you turn small, everyday objects into dramatic, frame-filling images. Record dew drops on flower petals at dawn or the tiny creatures in a tidal pool at the beach. A large maximum aperture lets you create stunning pictures with crisply focused subjects and artistically blurred backgrounds.

World-class optical performance

Nikon's world-renowned optics help this lens deliver razor-sharp images. A multi-coating on the lens minimizes flare and ghosting. And Nikon's built-in Silent Wave Motor makes autofocus very fast and nearly silent. The lens has built-in vibration reduction, too. Built-in motion sensors steer a special set of optical elements inside the lens, neatly compensating for camera movement and stabilizing the image. You get much sharper pictures — even in low-light conditions where slower shutter speeds and hand motion can easily cause blurred images with a regular lens.

I have been waiting for the price of this lens to drop for a long time. This is a solid lens, fast AF, and sharp.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Really an amazing lens. Heavy but well worth it. A transition coming from zoom lenses these last 10 plus years. Used to use prime lenses with film, but got away from it with digital - now nice to go back to prime lenses with a full from camera. Had forgotten what I had given up. Clarity/sharpness is great - color as well. So far have done some minor macro work and taken photos of grandkids - you can simple tell the difference from other lenses. I have always liked the 105mm better than 85mm - but this seems to be a personal preference. I prefer this model since it does do Macro unlike the 85mm. The broken is very good.

Pros: Very sharp, great colors. Great middle range lens.

Cons: maybe the weight, but you get used to it quickly - at least it feels like you are holding something. Getting accustomed to it right now, but does tend to search something on focus. Can't really fins anything that make me regret the purchase - not a "cons" but rather a "Pros".

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Still learning this 105mm MICRO lens so unable to be definitive. However, about a year ago Rusty recommended an AWESOME Nikkor 40mm MICRO. It is so good that I have used it exclusively ever since! Crisp closeups and stunningly clear long distance. I mention this because in my effort to REALLY see and understand the plant species I am interested in, I decided to try this 105mm MICRO. It IS a keeper. Captures the details I want. Will probably end up using it for focus stacking next winter.

Pros: As I said, am still learning the lens. The detail it provides is worth every costly penny!

Cons: Remember, this is all subjective: This lens is heavy. If you do not personally have strong shoulders and three legs or something to brace against - USE a STRONG anchoring Tripod when in the field if there is ANY wind. If you shoot from a vehicle - turn off the engine, take a deep breath and hold that position as you press camera firmly to your face or glasses (get a pair that will not distort from constant use).

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Great lens for portraits and even better for macro. Who can't resist spring flowers now and then or a close-up of a puppy's face? It's a fast lens at 2.8 so it is great for low-light situations and for taking macro shots in low light without a special flash. It's really great to move in close without special lighting for macro. And there's VR to boot. I really like it.

Pros: well-built, versatile, fast

Cons: pricey but worth it

I LOVE THIS LENS!

Features

Product Overview: The Nikon AF-S VR Micro-Nikkor 105mm f/2.8G IF-ED is compatible with Nikon film and digital SLR cameras. The focal length is fixed at 105mm, but can be used for macro shots as close as 12 inches, resulting in a 1:1 magnification ratio.

ED Glass: The Extra-low Dispersion (ED) glass element minimizes chromatic aberration.

Nano Crystal Coat: The exclusive Nano Crystal Coating further reduces ghosting and flare for even greater image clarity.

Built-in CPU: The lens has a built-in CPU which allows it to communicate with the camera body for focus and exposure functions. A set of CPU contacts is located on the lens mount for interfacing with the camera body.

Auto Focus: Internal Focus (IF) provides fast and quiet autofocusing without changing the length of the lens, retaining subject-working distance through the focus range. Nikon's Silent Wave Motor (SWM) enables ultra-high-speed autofocusing with exceptional accuracy and super-quiet operation. The manual/auto focus mode switch allows quick response to situations requiring manual focus operation.

Focus Range Limit: If your subject is always more than 20 inches away, a switch allows you to fix the focus range at 0.5m-infinity to reduce focusing time (for AF cameras compatible with AF-S Nikkor lenses only).

Vibration Reduction (VR II): Vibration reduction minimizes the effects of camera shake allowing you to shoot handheld at as many as 4 shutter speed stops slower than would otherwise be possible, assuring dramatically sharper images. You can turn vibration reduction on or off with the switch on the side of the lens.

Aperture: Because there is no aperture ring on this lens, the aperture must be set on the camera.

Diaphragm: The lens is equipped with a fully-automatic, 9-blade diaphragm that produces a nearly circular aperture. Out-of-focus images in front of or behind the subject are rendered as pleasing blurs.

Optional Accessories: Compatible optional accessories include 62mm screw-on filters and AF-S Teleconverters.

Quality lens for quality photos

Written by Don, eAdministrator, Customer Care Center, on 2/5/2013 2:35:00 PM

Wow. This was my first opportunity to try out a really nice prime lens and I now know what a difference a superior lens can make. It was definitely difficult to give back.

I read a few online reviews for this lens before I gave it a try. A few folks warned that it'd be heavy, though I didn't read that as a detraction. It was, indeed, substantial and that felt good. Other reviewers noted better performance with larger apertures. I did not observe such a distinction. My long exposure, low aperture shots came out beautifully with great depth of field and clarity and, yes, the wide aperture shots really popped.

I had opportunity to try out the "micro" (macro) features of this lens and was pretty blown away — I got superb hand held macro photos. I can only imagine what adding a tripod and some extra time could have rendered.

I got some great professional-looking head shots and some wonderful indoor still lifes. I'd definitely recommend this lens.

Customer Q&A

Crutchfield asked
Why did you buy this?

I needed a solid macro prime lens &, based on great reviews & recommendations, decided this was it. Long ago, in the late '60s, I owned a Nikon 85mm Micro-Nikkor & loved it. I figure I'm going to love this one, too! [ WILLIAM  Mar 16, 2016 ]

1 question already asked

Made in China. I bought the lense new. No issues with any products I've bought thru Crutchfield. Hope this helps. Just make sure the warranty is for USA. [ Roger  Mar 13, 2015 ]
I purchased new, made in China, but I've used it quite a bit in close up work and have not had any issues. It's a great lens for Macro work, since the working distance is increased and you can get some light into the image area and still get close in. [ Michael  Mar 12, 2015 ]
CHINA; NEW [ JOSE  Mar 11, 2015 ]
The one I bought new in 2014 was made in China. [ KEN  Mar 10, 2015 ]
Hi, the first on I got from Crutchfield was an returned lens from their outlet. I returned it because of a very small spot on the lens. They sent me a new one to replace it. It was made in China. I hope this helps. "JB" [ WAYNE J  Mar 10, 2015 ]
