The Nikon D5300's fully articulated 3.2" LCD makes it easy to shoot from challenging angles

The Nikon D5300's fully articulated 3.2" LCD makes it easy to shoot from challenging angles.

Ready for what's around the next bend

You've been going up and over mountain roads for what seems like days, and around every corner the vistas just keep getting better. This trip out west certainly isn't disappointing — and neither are the pictures you're getting with your new Nikon D5300 digital SLR. Just wait 'til your friends back home see — wait, the built-in Wi-Fi® will connect to your smartphone so you can post those vistas on your Facebook page in moments.

Instantly, the people that count in your life are getting a chance to share in the magic of your vacation — and thanks to the D5300's built-in GPS, they'll be able to trace your itinerary as well. And all the connectivity this camera has makes it easy to put yourself in the picture as well — simply use your smart device to view your shot and fire your shutter remotely.

Crisp and clear

Breathtaking landscapes require a camera that's up to the task of delivering exquisite detail. Most cameras include an optical low-pass filter (OLPF) that blurs images ever so slightly in order to avoid image artifacts, like interference patterns that appear on brick work or tiled rooftops seen from a distance. The D5300 has been designed without an OLPF, so it's more than ready to capture images that leap off the screen. You'll see a level of clarity and sharpness that you probably haven't experienced before when you sit down to work with the images this camera can generate.

You'll appreciate that advantage when you're shooting with the included 18-140mm, f/3.5-5.6 7.8X zoom lens. With an equivalent focal length of 27-210mm, it's an ideal lens to have with you while you're traveling, because it's equally at home with the challenges of landscapes, portraiture, and candid snapshots.

Features every photographer wants

The D5300's on-board image processing engine gives you blazing reaction speed, sharply detailed images in low light, and smooth, faithful color rendering with subtle gradations. The high-density, 39-point autofocus system helps you keep track of your subject in challenging shooting conditions, even when you're following dynamic action coming toward or going away from the camera. And you can shoot full-resolution images at up to 5 frames per second in continuous shooting mode, while panning with your subject. Follow the action in either the optical viewfinder or on the wide screen, 3.2-inch vari-angle LCD monitor.

Images that move with you

The D5300 shoots lush HD video at up to 1080/60p with full-time autofocus. Use either the built-in stereo microphone, or an external mic connected through the stereo minijack input, and adjust your input levels to suit your environment. The more experienced videographer will appreciate the advanced manual modes that are available, even in the middle of acquiring the shot, and your adjustments will be reflected in the easy-to view, articulated live view LCD monitor.

Develop your photography hobby

You don't have to be an expert photographer to use an SLR — they all offer easy automatic shooting. Because of their build quality and the physics of good glass and large sensors, even their built-in automatic settings will get you better pictures than most point-and-shoots or mobile devices. But experienced photographers and budding hobbyists can get more creative by manually adjusting settings like aperture and shutter speed. SLRs let you expand your shooting options with additional lenses and flashes to suit just about any situation. If you'd like to record the occasional video, look for a model with high-def movie mode.

Recording Features

Vari-angle LCD Monitor: The Nikon D5300 has a 3.2" TFT LCD monitor featuring approximately 1,036,800 pixels and 3-level adjustable brightness. The Vari-angle monitor opens outward 180°, and can be rotated 180° forward or 90° backward for high- and low-angle photography. The large LCD monitor has large fonts with easy-to-view menus. The monitor can display shooting information such as shutter speed, aperture, and number of exposures remaining as well as the settings currently applied.

Live View: The camera features Live View, which allows you to frame your photographs in the monitor instead of the viewfinder. When the Live View switch is rotated, the mirror is raised and the view through the lens will be displayed in the monitor. The subject will no longer be visible in the viewfinder. The Live View display will show up to 12 items, including shooting, focus, and AF-area modes, along with other status indicators. You can opt to hide many of the indicators, or overlay a framing grid in the monitor.

Optical Viewfinder: The D5300 uses a fixed eye-level pentamirror single-lens reflex viewfinder with a built-in diopter adjustment to set the viewfinder to your personal eyesight (with or without glasses). The viewfinder's coverage area is approximately 95% horizontal and vertical. During self-timer or remote control operation when your eye does not cover the viewfinder eyepiece, stray light may enter the eyepiece and affect the exposure when the image is captured. To prevent this, you can use the supplied DK-5 eyepiece cap to cover the eyepiece.

Image Sensor: The D5300 features a 23.5mm x 15.6mm DX-format CMOS image sensor with a total pixel count of approximately 24.78 million pixels and an effective pixel count of approximately 24.1 million.

Dust Reduction System: The image sensor is equipped with a low-pass filter to remove dust or dirt on the sensor. You can set the camera to clean the image sensor automatically at startup, or at shut down, or both. It can also be set to turn the auto cleaning function off.

Compatible Lenses: The D5300 is equipped with the standard Nikon F bayonet mount with AF contacts. DX-format-compatible lenses are recommended. Auto focus is available with AF-S and AF-I lenses. Auto focus is not available with other type G and D lenses, AF lenses (IX NIKKOR and lenses for the F3AF are not supported, and AI-P lenses. Non-CPU lenses can be used in Manual Mode, but without the camera exposure meter. The electronic rangefinder can be used with lenses that have a maximum aperture of f/5.6 or faster.

Recording Media: The camera records images on Secure Digital (SD) memory cards up to 2 GB in size, SDHC memory cards up to 32 GB, and SDXC cards up to 64 or 128 GB. The camera also supports Eye-Fi and ultra high-speed UHS-I cards. No SD cards are included with the camera. The camera has no internal memory.

Still Image Formats: The D5300 records still images in JPEG and NEF (RAW) formats. You can choose from the following Image Quality and Image Size settings:

Quality Option
(Compression ratio)
Available Image Sizes Description
NEF (RAW) 6000 x 4000 Raw 14-bit data, compressed

Built-in Wi-Fi and GPS: The D5300 has built-in Wi-Fi and GPS technology. Using the Wireless Mobile Utility app on your Android (2.3 and up) or iOS (6.0 or later) device, you can display the view through the camera lens on your smart device. You can also control the camera remotely, including taking pictures and downloading them to your device for sharing on the Internet. The location data unit can record information on the camera's current position (latitude, longitude, altitude) and the current time as provided by satellite navigation systems, and embed it into photographs and movies taken with the camera.

Focus Modes: You can choose from the following autofocus and manual focus modes:

  • Auto-servo AF (AF-A): Camera automatically selects single-servo autofocus if subject is stationary, and continuous-servo autofocus if subject is moving.
  • Single-servo Autofocus (AF-S): For stationary subjects. Focus locks when shutter-release button is pressed halfway.
  • Continuous-servo Autofocus (AF-C): For moving subjects. Camera focuses continuously while shutter release button is pressed halfway.
  • Manual (M): Manual focus is available for lenses that do not support autofocus (non-AF Nikkor lenses) or when autofocus does not produce the desired results.

AF Assist Illuminator: The built-in AF assist illuminator enables the camera to focus even when the subject is poorly lit. This feature will light automatically to assist the autofocus operation when the shutter release button is pressed halfway. It has an operating range of 1'-8" to 9'-10".

AF-Area Modes: The D5300 offers a choice of four focus areas that together cover a wide area of the frame. The AF-area mode determines how the focus area is selected and what happens if the subject moves out of the selected focus area while the camera is still focusing. You can choose one of the following AF-area modes:

  • Single Point: You select the focus area manually and the camera focuses on the subject in the selected focus area only. The selection can be made from any one of the eleven AF spot sensors.
  • Dynamic Area (9, 21, or 39 AF points): In AF-A and AF-C modes, user selects focus point manually but camera will focus based on information from surrounding focus points if subject briefly leaves the selected point. In AF-S focus mode, you select the focus point manually.
  • Auto Area: Camera automatically detects subject and selects focus point.
  • 3D-Tracking: In AF-A and AF-C focus modes, you select the focus point using the multi-selector. If subject moves after camera has focused, camera uses 3D tracking to select new focus point and keep focus locked on original subject while shutter release pressed halfway. If subject leaves viewfinder, you will need to remove finger from shutter release button and recompose photo with subject in the selected focus point.

Release Modes: The camera can take pictures one at a time, or continuously as long as the shutter release button is pressed. You can also take photos using the self-timer or with an optional remote control. The camera allows you to choose from the following Release Modes:

  • Single Frame: The camera takes one photograph each time the shutter release button is pressed.
  • Continuous L (low speed): The camera records photographs up to 3 frames per second while the shutter release button is held down.
  • Continuous H (high speed): The camera records photographs up to 5 frames per second while the shutter release button is held down.
  • Self-timer: This mode can be used to reduce camera shake or for self-portraits. The shutter is released about 10 seconds after shutter-release button is pressed depending on setting.
  • Delayed Remote: Shutter is released 2 seconds after the shutter release button on the optional ML-L3 remote is pressed.
  • Quick-response Remote: Shutter is released when the shutter release button on the optional ML-L3 remote is pressed.
  • Quiet Shutter Release: The camera takes a single photograph, as in Single Frame mode, except that the camera makes no shutter sound when shooting or beep when focusing.

Nikon 3D Color Matrix Metering II: The D5300's 3D Color Matrix Metering II evaluates each scene for brightness, color, contrast, size and position of shadows and highlights, selected focus area and camera-to-subject distance, comparing that information against an onboard database of more than 30,000 actual photographic scenes. The result delivers instantly and precisely determined exposures for each scene, even in challenging lighting conditions.

Metering: You can choose from the following Metering Modes to determine how the camera sets exposure:

  • Matrix: Produces natural results in most situations. Camera uses 420-pixel RGB sensor to meter a wide area of the frame and set exposure according to tone distribution, color, composition, and with type G or D lenses, range information. (See 3D Color Matrix Metering II above). With other CPU lenses, the camera uses color matrix metering II, which does not include 3D range information.
  • Center-weighted: The camera meters the entire frame but assigns greatest weight to center area.
  • Spot: The camera meters exposure in active focus point only. This ensures that the subject will be correctly exposed, even when background is much brighter or darker.

Shooting Modes: The Mode Dial on the top of the camera offers a wide choice of shooting modes, organized in 4 groups:

  • Auto Modes: For simple, point-and-shoot photography: Auto and Auto (flash off).
  • P, S, A, and M Modes: For full control over camera settings: Programmed Auto, Shutter-Priority Auto, Aperture-priority Auto, and Manual.
  • Scene Modes: The camera automatically optimizes settings to suit the scene selected: Portrait, Landscape, Child, Sports, Close up, Other Scenes (Night Portrait, Night Landscape, Party/Indoor, Beach/Snow, Sunset, Dusk/Dawn, Pet Portrait, Candlelight, Blossom, Autumn Colors, and Food.
  • Special Effects: You can choose from the following special effects for still images and movies: Night Vision, Color Sketch, Toy Camera Effect, Miniature Effect, Selective Color, Silhouette, High Key, Low Key, and HDR Painting.

Exposure Compensation: You can alter the exposure from the value suggested by the camera, making pictures brighter or darker. You can adjust the exposure from -5.0 to +5.0 EV in 1/3 EV steps in the P, S, A, and M modes.

White Balance: White balance is used to preserve natural colors under different types of lighting. When the camera is set to one of the exposure modes (P, S, A, M), you can choose one of the following white balance options: Auto, Incandescent, Fluorescent (7 types), Direct Sunlight, Flash, Cloudy, Shade, and Preset Manual.

ISO Sensitivity: ISO Sensitivity is the digital equivalent of film speed. When lighting is poor, the camera will automatically increase sensitivity, permitting faster exposures, and minimizing blur caused by inadvertent camera movement, up to a maximum equivalent of ISO 6400. You can manually select from ISO settings 100 to 12800, with incremental steps of 1/3EV. You can also choose HI 0.3, HI 0.7, HI 1 (ISO 25600 equivalent).

High Dynamic Range (HDR): The High Dynamic Range (HDR) function combines two exposures to form a single image that captures a wide range of tones from shadows to highlights, even with high-contrast subjects. You can select from the following options: Auto, Extra High, High, Normal, Low, or Off.

Multiple Exposures: You can record a series of two or three exposures in a single photograph. Multiple exposures produce colors noticeably superior to those in software-generated photographic overlays created from existing images.

Active D-Lighting: Nikon's Active D-Lighting can correct exposure issues due to difficult lighting conditions instantly and automatically while you shoot. Active D-Lighting preserves details in highlights and shadows, creating photographs with natural contrast.

Interval Timer Photography: You can take photographs automatically at preset intervals. When setting up the interval timer shooting, you can choose the following parameters:

  • Starting Time: Now or at an entered time (clock must be set)
  • Interval: 1 second to 24 hours
  • Number of Intervals: 1 to 999 times
Note: Use of a tripod is recommended during interval timer shooting.

Built-in Flash: The D5300 has a built-in flash that will pop up automatically in low light situations, or can be manually raised with a button release. The camera offers the following flash sync modes depending upon the shooting mode selected: Auto, Auto with Red-eye Reduction, Auto Slow Sync, Auto Slow Sync with Red-eye Reduction, Rear-curtain Sync, Fill Flash, and Flash Off.

Nikon Creative Lighting System (CLS): Nikon's Creative Lighting System (CLS) offers improved communication between the camera and compatible external flash units for improved flash photography. The camera's Accessory Shoe is compatible with the following optional Speedlights: SB-910, SB-900, SB-800, SB-700, SB-600, SB-400, and SB-R200.

Flash Compensation: In P, S, A, and M modes, the flash compensation can be used to increase or reduce flash output from the level chosen by the camera's flash control system. The flash exposure compensation can be set to values between -3 EV (darker) and +1 EV (brighter) in increments of 1/3 EV or 1/2 EV.

Picture Controls: When the camera is set to one of the P, S, A, or M modes, you can choose from the following Picture Control options: Standard, Neutral, Vivid, Monochrome, Portrait, and Landscape.

Custom Settings: The D5300 features a custom settings menu that allows you to customize the camera settings to suit your individual preferences. There are six main setting areas:

We switched from Canon. Nikon ease of use is better for me. Menu is more intuitive. Zoom Lens is fantastic. Very happy with our investment!

Pros: Ease of Use Rotating LCD Lots of preset shooting options, including effects

Cons: On the heavy side Pricetag... No autofocus on the video. Upgrade to next model

Really easy to use right out of the box. I am a novice photographer and it takes great, high quality pictures in all kinds of settings even just using the autofocus feature.

Pros: The camera is very easy to use even for a newbie photographer like me. So far all the pictures I have taken are very high quality pictures. The camera has all the features I could possibly want or use so I can't imagine I will outgrow the camera.

Cons: It'll take some time for me to learn how to use the features on the camera but the user's manual is easy to follow.

This is my first DSLR. It didn't disappoint me so far. It meets all my expectations. It is a little bit expensive than it should be. But any way it is not a bad idea to start with it for the first DSLR owner. I haven't figured out Geo tag and wifi function yet. So I have no comment on these. I hope they are fine. The image quality is excellent most for most of the time. But there are only a few lens to choose. DX format lens, I think only 18 lens available. In conclusion, I would like to give this product 4.5 stars out of 5.

Pros: Very good image quality Useful features Big LCD with multi angle view Geo tag and wifi Good build quality

Cons: Not weather sealed A little bit complicated to use No touch screen No so many DX format lens to choose A little bit expensive

I haven't had an SLR since my Nikon FM and I am really looking forward to learning all about this camera. It seems to have enough bells and whistles to be creative with while since having the automatic functions that my wife will use with the kids. I struggled between this and the Pentax K5II which would have been nice for the weather resistant features. I went with the Nikon for the stereo mic with the video, flexible lcd screen and compatibility with my old lens.

Pros: Great picture clarity, awesome 18-140 lens that was $300 off, great auto focus, light weight.

Cons: Could use a touch screen and be weather sealed.

So far this is an excellent camera. Still trying to figure everything out, but it really is ready to go out of the box. Most of the "special effects" seem to be an unnecessary addition as they do not add much value. Overall, it appears to be an excellent camera that will last for many years to come.

Very nice camera. Lots of functionality but with that comes menu overload that is not very clear to a novice user. Great picture quality!

Pros: Great picture quality. Good video quality. Wifi built in.

Cons: Not very user friendly for the novice user.
