Attach this versatile lens to your Nikon DX SLR camera on your next vacation, and you may not have to change lenses again the whole time. Its large focal range lets you capture a broad variety of great-looking photos, from wide-angle to medium-range telephoto. Take panoramic shots of the places you visit, portraits of your family on location, and closeups of the details on buildings and monuments. And the optical quality is what you'd expect from Nikon — high-quality lens elements produce sharp, crystal-clear images. A built-in Silent Wave Motor lets you quickly and quietly focus on your subjects.
Vibration reduction ensures that your photos come out crisp in many different types of lighting conditions. Built-in motion sensors steer a special set of optical elements inside the lens, neatly compensating for camera movement and stabilizing the image. You get much sharper pictures — even in low-light conditions where slower shutter speeds and hand motion can easily cause blurred images with a regular lens.

Nikon AF-S DX Nikkor 16-85mm f/3.5-5.6G ED VR Reviews
Average Customer Review:
Nikon AF-S DX 16-85mm Lens
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)
This is a very clear upgrade over the 18-105 kit lens that I have been using on my Nikon D90. The slight drop off in zoom is more than compensated for by having a better constructed lens that delivers sharper pictures across the entire range of zoom. The focus rings and updated VR are immediate improvements over the kit lens. It seems like I would take 4-5 pictures hoping one would turn out well. With the 16-85 lens, I have been getting 'tack sharp' shots. Most of my shooting with this lens has been centered around family events which includes three young grandchildren. I have been using this lens for some portrait shots indoors and the results have more than adequate - much better than the 18-105 lens but not nearly as good as my 35mm 1.8 lens (which gives much better bokeh and requires less thinking about light sources).
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)
This lens has proven to be an excellent, all-around lens when paired with my Nikon D90. Sharpness is very good throughout the zoom range. The vibration reduction seems to perform well at lower-light levels which is a big help. Used it at a recent wedding and had a little trouble with lens flare on a few, backlit shots when the sun was setting, despite the lens hood. I think the biggest advantages of this lens when compared to the Nikon 18-55mm, is that it's a little sharper at the edges on the wider end, (which can be an advantage when doing enlargements of group photos), and, the versatility of having the extra focal length. The only real drawback is the price tag!

Features and Specs

Overview: This item is an AF-S Nikkor 16-85mm, f/3.5-5.6G ED VR, wide angle to medium telephoto zoom lens, optimized use with Nikon digital SLR cameras (DX- format).
Construction: The two Extra-low Dispersion (ED) elements and three aspherical lenses control chromatic aberrations while enhancing sharpness and contrast even at the widest aperture settings.
Nikon Super Integrated Coating (SIC): SIC offers superior color performance and substantially reduced ghosting and flare.
Built-in CPU: The lens has a built-in CPU which allows it to communicate with the camera body for focus and exposure functions. A set of CPU contacts is located on the lens mount for interfacing with the camera body.
Auto Focus: Nikon's Silent Wave Motor (SWM) enables ultra-high-speed autofocusing with exceptional accuracy and super-quiet operation. The manual/auto focus mode switch allows quick response to situations requiring manual focus operation.
Zoom Control: The lens features a large, textured manual zoom ring for easy zooming control.
Vibration Reduction (VR II): Vibration reduction minimizes the effects of camera shake allowing you to shoot handheld at as many as 4 shutter speed stops slower than would otherwise be possible, assuring dramatically sharper images. You can turn vibration reduction on or off with the switch on the side of the lens.
Aperture: Because there is no aperture ring on this lens, the aperture must be set on the camera.
Diaphragm: The lens is equipped with a fully-automatic, 7-blade diaphragm that produces a nearly circular aperture. Out-of-focus images in front of or behind the subject are rendered as pleasing blurs.
Optional Accessories: Compatible optional accessories include 67mm screw-on filters. Teleconverters are not compatible with this lens.
