Nikon

Our take on the Nikon AF-S 24-70mm f/2.8G ED Lens

Wide-angle to telephoto shooting with this versatile lens

Capture incredible everyday photos and artistic people shots with this versatile Nikon zoom lens. Its focal range gives you moderate wide-angle to medium telephoto shooting with Nikon FX and DX SLR cameras, like the D90 or D300. A large maximum aperture throughout the focal range means you'll get well-exposed photos, even when shooting in lower light with slower shutter speeds. Shoot group photos indoors without using a flash. Or snap clear outdoor shots — whether the subject is your children playing in the background or wildlife on a nature trail.

Superior optical performance

High-quality Nikon optics ensure accurate, razor-sharp results. A multi-coating on the lens minimizes flare and ghosting. Your photos will be clear and detailed across the entire field of view — from one edge to the other — thanks to three ED (Extra-Low Dispersion) glass elements and three aspherical lens elements. And Nikon's built-in Silent Wave Motor makes autofocus very fast and nearly silent. You'll be able to quickly focus on your subject and snap images of candid moments.

    Features

Overview: This item is an AF-S Nikkor 24-70mm, f/2.8G ED, wide angle to medium telephoto zoom lens, optimized for edge-to-edge sharpness when using both the Nikon FX- (23.9 x 36mm) and DX- format image sensors.

Construction: The three Extra-low Dispersion (ED) elements and three aspherical lenses control chromatic aberrations while enhancing sharpness and contrast even at the widest aperture settings. The exclusive Nano Crystal Coating further reduces ghosting and flare for even greater image clarity.

Built-in CPU: The lens has a built-in CPU which allows it to communicate with the camera body for focus and exposure functions. A set of CPU contacts is located on the lens mount for interfacing with the camera body.

Auto Focus: Internal Focus (IF) provides fast and quiet autofocusing without changing the length of the lens, retaining subject-working distance through the focus range. Nikon's Silent Wave Motor (SWM) enables ultra-high-speed autofocusing with exceptional accuracy and super-quiet operation. The manual/auto focus mode switch allows quick response to situations requiring manual focus operation.

Zoom Control: The lens features a large, textured manual zoom ring for easy zooming control.

Aperture: Because there is no aperture ring on this lens, the aperture must be set on the camera.

Diaphragm: The lens is equipped with a fully-automatic, 9-blade diaphragm that produces a nearly circular aperture. Out-of-focus images in front of or behind the subject are rendered as pleasing blurs.

Optional Accessories: Compatible optional accessories include 77mm screw-on filters; including circular polarizing filter.

Note: Teleconverter rings are not compatible with this lens.

Very excellent lens and exactly what I wanted in a zoom fixed focal length lens. Anybody who buys this lens will be very pleased with it. It's expensive, but then most Nikon lens are but they are well worth the price that they cost.

This is a serious lens. Yes, it is a little over priced but one of the most important lenses in the Nikon lineup. Very sharp and a little bit heavy.

It's almost like having 4 primes on at once

Written By Ray G., New York on Saturday, November 05, 2011

This is fantastic lens that is sure not to disappoint. The quality of the lens rivals the faster primes that Nikon offers and as such, I no longer carry them. This lens handles low light situations very well, even without VR.

You could debate that at over twice the price of the DX 16-85mm f/3.5-5.6G is the quality is twice as good? But if you are a pixel peeper and you want the best mid-zoom that Nikon offers, this is the lens to get.

Dealing with Crutchfield was a pleasure, they offered very good assistance, had a painless ordering process, and delivered when promised. With their return policy, it's a risk free purchase if your sample doesn't impress. I would highly recommend this lens and purchasing from Crutchfield.
    Pros:
This is a top quality lens that takes fantastic photos. On my DX camera, the only distortion that can be seen is at 24mm and even then, it's so slight and Nikons distortion control fixes it. Vignetting is only found at 70mm @ f/2.8 and even then it's not really field relevant. And bokeh on this lens are far better and more effective than either my of primes (35mm and 50mm f/1.8)
    Cons:
This lens is quite large and heavy compared to the non-pro lenses in Nikon's lineup. On my D7000, it is very unbalanced unless you add the MB-D11 Grip and Battery, so expect to add another $300 to the cost if you have a DX body and want a more ergonomic setup.

Just got the Nikon D700, and this is the 1st lens I bought for it to use in my wedding and portraiture photography. I don't see any of the "silver flakes" that some people are complaining about.

I love how the lens feels on the camera. Don't get me wrong, the lens/D700 combination is heavy at 4.59lbs, but it feels ergonomically comfortable in the hand.

The focus is dead on (on my copy of D700). I don't see any front- or back-focus.

Not as great as the price would indicate

Written By John, Hannibal, MO on Saturday, July 11, 2009

In fairness I haven't used this lens a lot yet. Received it at the end of June 2009. I took wedding photos with it and to tell you the truth I was not at all blown away by the results. The lens is well built, very heavy. The pictures were OK not stunning. They were taken with a D300 camera. It was an outdoor wedding. There were some very nice pictures, but just didn't meet my expectations so far. Maybe with a little more practice?
