Our take on the Nikon AF-S 24-70mm f/2.8G ED Lens

by Tara W.

Wide-angle to telephoto shooting with this versatile lens

Capture incredible everyday photos and artistic people shots with this versatile Nikon zoom lens. Its focal range gives you moderate wide-angle to medium telephoto shooting with Nikon FX and DX SLR cameras, like the D90 or D300. A large maximum aperture throughout the focal range means you'll get well-exposed photos, even when shooting in lower light with slower shutter speeds. Shoot group photos indoors without using a flash. Or snap clear outdoor shots — whether the subject is your children playing in the background or wildlife on a nature trail.

Superior optical performance

High-quality Nikon optics ensure accurate, razor-sharp results. A multi-coating on the lens minimizes flare and ghosting. Your photos will be clear and detailed across the entire field of view — from one edge to the other — thanks to three ED (Extra-Low Dispersion) glass elements and three aspherical lens elements. And Nikon's built-in Silent Wave Motor makes autofocus very fast and nearly silent. You'll be able to quickly focus on your subject and snap images of candid moments.

Warranty Information

Overview: This item is an AF-S Nikkor 24-70mm, f/2.8G ED, wide angle to medium telephoto zoom lens, optimized for edge-to-edge sharpness when using both the Nikon FX- (23.9 x 36mm) and DX- format image sensors.

Construction: The three Extra-low Dispersion (ED) elements and three aspherical lenses control chromatic aberrations while enhancing sharpness and contrast even at the widest aperture settings. The exclusive Nano Crystal Coating further reduces ghosting and flare for even greater image clarity.

Built-in CPU: The lens has a built-in CPU which allows it to communicate with the camera body for focus and exposure functions. A set of CPU contacts is located on the lens mount for interfacing with the camera body.

Auto Focus: Internal Focus (IF) provides fast and quiet autofocusing without changing the length of the lens, retaining subject-working distance through the focus range. Nikon's Silent Wave Motor (SWM) enables ultra-high-speed autofocusing with exceptional accuracy and super-quiet operation. The manual/auto focus mode switch allows quick response to situations requiring manual focus operation.

Zoom Control: The lens features a large, textured manual zoom ring for easy zooming control.

Aperture: Because there is no aperture ring on this lens, the aperture must be set on the camera.

Diaphragm: The lens is equipped with a fully-automatic, 9-blade diaphragm that produces a nearly circular aperture. Out-of-focus images in front of or behind the subject are rendered as pleasing blurs.

Optional Accessories: Compatible optional accessories include 77mm screw-on filters; including circular polarizing filter.

Note: Teleconverter rings are not compatible with this lens.

Great lens

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)
Awesome lens for general every day use. The breadth and the quality is just amazing. I will buy some prime lens for some targeted photography, but I think it meets my need for 90% of use/capability
Fast, sharp and bright output
A bit pricey - but then you get what you pay for.

Nice lens, good light-gathering ability.

Written By gene, maspeth, new york on Tuesday, May 27, 2014
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)
It's a nice lens: typical Nikon-quality glass, smooth operation, does what it's supposed to and does it well. Basically, it doesn't get in your way, which is what any/every camera and lens should do.

My 28-300mm is my main carry-with lens, but sometimes being limited to f/4 or to a pokey f/5.6 can be a pain. My 70-200 f/2.8 lens is great for shooting fast shots of birds and other quick-movers without having to resort to stupid-high ISOs and all the noise that entails. I try to never go higher than ISO400 anyway, and would rather risk motion-blur on a maybe than nasty noise for sure. But 70mm at its widest is limiting when you want to get wider shots. The 18-55mm kit lens from my old D3k is still one of my favorites for wide-open shots (don't even think I used the 18-105mm kit lens from my D7k, 'though that's a great lens as well), but even that can only get to f/3.5 or so at its widest (down to f/5.6 even at 55mm!).

So, I decided to get the 24-70mm f/2.8 for those wider-angle shots that need just that little bit more "oomf" in low-light conditions. It works wonderfully indoors, even to the point where you probably don't even need a flash (or at best a very minor fill), and still not have to crank up the ISO to stupid-high levels to get decent shutter-speeds. At common 30mm to 40mm shots, you're shooting at f/2.8, not f/5 or so, so that's generally about 2 stops worth of improvement. Beats cranking the ISO from 400 to 1600!
Great optical quality, smooth operation, distance readout, typische Nikon/Nikkor quality. Great indoor / low-light lens when wide-open, lets you still take pix at decent shutter-speeds without having to resort to flash.
Not weatherproof as its sister 70-200mm f/2.8 lens is, so don't take it out in rain or fog.

Nice range and quality

Written By DezS, NYC on Wednesday, April 16, 2014
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)
Purchased this lens to replace my favorite lens: the Nikon 17-55mm f/2.8 lens as I went full frame. The 24-70mm f/2.8 delivers great IQ and balances well with my full frame SLR. It's also fits the range that like to shoot.
Very good IQ, fast lens.
Price. Way too expensive and not worth the price, in my opinion. Nikon has raised prices on all of their Nikkor lens for no apparent reason. Might be to offset their losses after the earthquake & tsunamis. Lens case is flimsy and a VR version of this lens is desired by all.

nikkor 70-200mm 2.8 VRII

Written By NYSGT, Orange County Ny on Saturday, November 30, 2013
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)
I purchased the 70-200 2.8 VRII for sports photography of my then 11 yr old very athletic son. This is the second lens of this size ive owned, The previous lens was a sigma. I sold the sigma after borrowing the 70-200mm 2.8 VRII. The image colors are amazing. The auto focus is good and the lens is fast. I bought it here at crutchfields and the bought to 24-70 2.8 lens too. I will not consider anything but nikkor pro lenses anymore. Crutchfield is the only place that I will buy from. Im now in the market for Nikkor's holy grail lens: the 300MM 2,8 VRII lens for my sports photography. If your a serious photographer don't let these special moments pass before you buy the lens that your really want. Life is to short and when you see the amazing images from the70- 200mm 2.8 VRII lens your forget about the money before tax that you paid!
all the above are the pros... its heavy but superior optics have mass.
the cons of this lens are the need to buy the next lens up... 300mm 2.8 VRII I'm saving for that!

Nikon AF-S 24-70mm f/2.8G ED Lens

Written By Mrgrim, Nashville on Saturday, June 15, 2013
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)
I bought the Nikon 24-70mm to compliment my new Nikon D800 and let me tell you, this two is a perfect combination. This lens is tack sharp throughout the zoom range. It's wide enough to shoot landscape and it's perfect for portrait. The only downside of this lens is that it's heavy. If you're a pro or amateur photographer who want to take your photography to the next level, this lens will help you excel. When it comes to buying lenses, I'll never look elsewhere because Crutchfield is the best place to shop online. Why? Superb customer service, free shipping, and low prices.
Tack sharp throughout the zoom range, weather seal, and build like a tank.

It's almost like having 4 primes on at once

Written By Ray G., New York on Saturday, November 05, 2011
This is fantastic lens that is sure not to disappoint. The quality of the lens rivals the faster primes that Nikon offers and as such, I no longer carry them. This lens handles low light situations very well, even without VR.

You could debate that at over twice the price of the DX 16-85mm f/3.5-5.6G is the quality is twice as good? But if you are a pixel peeper and you want the best mid-zoom that Nikon offers, this is the lens to get.

Dealing with Crutchfield was a pleasure, they offered very good assistance, had a painless ordering process, and delivered when promised. With their return policy, it's a risk free purchase if your sample doesn't impress. I would highly recommend this lens and purchasing from Crutchfield.
This is a top quality lens that takes fantastic photos. On my DX camera, the only distortion that can be seen is at 24mm and even then, it's so slight and Nikons distortion control fixes it. Vignetting is only found at 70mm @ f/2.8 and even then it's not really field relevant. And bokeh on this lens are far better and more effective than either my of primes (35mm and 50mm f/1.8)
This lens is quite large and heavy compared to the non-pro lenses in Nikon's lineup. On my D7000, it is very unbalanced unless you add the MB-D11 Grip and Battery, so expect to add another $300 to the cost if you have a DX body and want a more ergonomic setup.

Great Lens.

Written By StevenZ, Holtsville, NY on Monday, August 15, 2011
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)
Just got the Nikon D700, and this is the 1st lens I bought for it to use in my wedding and portraiture photography. I don't see any of the "silver flakes" that some people are complaining about.

I love how the lens feels on the camera. Don't get me wrong, the lens/D700 combination is heavy at 4.59lbs, but it feels ergonomically comfortable in the hand.

The focus is dead on (on my copy of D700). I don't see any front- or back-focus.

Not as great as the price would indicate

Written By John, Hannibal, MO on Saturday, July 11, 2009
In fairness I haven't used this lens a lot yet. Received it at the end of June 2009. I took wedding photos with it and to tell you the truth I was not at all blown away by the results. The lens is well built, very heavy. The pictures were OK not stunning. They were taken with a D300 camera. It was an outdoor wedding. There were some very nice pictures, but just didn't meet my expectations so far. Maybe with a little more practice?
