About the Nikon AF-S Nikkor 300mm f/4E PF ED VR

Dave Bar

Serious telephoto performance in a compact, lightweight design

If you're a serious Nikon enthusiast in the market for a high-performance telephoto lens that won't weigh you down, check out Nikon's lightest, most compact 300mm ever. This lens owes its incredible sharpness and travel-friendly size to a revolutionary Nikon-designed Phase Fresnel (PF) lens element — a first for Nikon's DSLR lens lineup. The PF element, which appears to have concentric circles engraved on its surface, virtually eliminates chromatic aberration and ghosting compared to standard glass lens elements. It also allows Nikon to use fewer elements for substantial savings in size and weight.

Even more refinements for better results

Nikon equipped this lens with advanced VR Vibration Reduction for up to an impressive 4.5 extra stops of shutter speed, allowing blur-free shooting without a tripod. You can choose from multiple VR modes when you want you shoot sports and action, or mount your rig to a tripod. And instantly switch from AF to manual focus with just a twist of the focus ring, thanks to manual focus override. A precision electromagnetic diaphragm mechanism ensures consistent exposures, especially when shooting at high frame rates. And to keep your images sparkling, Nikon uses a fluorine coating on the front lens element to repel dust, smudges, dirt, and grease for easier cleaning.

Features

Overview: The Nikon AF-S Nikkor 300mm f/4E PF ED VR lens is a telephoto prime lens. It is optimized for FX-format cameras, but can be used with DX-format cameras. It is ideal for fashion, portraits, nature, wildlife, sports, action, photojournalism, and more. The lens comes with the HB-73 lens hood and the CL-M3 Semi-soft lens case.

Phase Fresnel: The lens features a Nikon-designed Phase Fresnel (PF) lens element, which compensates for chromatic aberration and ghosting when combined with ordinary glass lens elements. The PF lens element, which is based upon the Phase Fresnel lens, allows Nikon engineers to use fewer lens elements, resulting in a more compact and lightweight lens.

Vibration Reduction: Vibration Reduction improves image stability by automatically compensating for camera shake. In this 300mm lens, Vibration Reduction creates a stabilizing effect equivalent to a shutter speed increase of 4.5 stops (in Normal mode). This is especially helpful for taking blur-free hand-held images in low light.

Silent Wave Motor (SWM): The exclusive Nikon Silent Wave Motor (SWM) enables fast, accurate, and quiet auto focus.

Focus Mode Switch: The Focus Mode switch on the barrel of the lens lets you \switch between focus modes: A/M and M/A. M/A is an auto focus mode that allows you to quickly override the auto focus by turning the focus ring. A/M (Auto-Priority Manual Mode) is primarily for auto focusing, but gives you an opportunity to adjust the focus manually by turning the focus ring farther than when the mode is set to M/A.

Focus Limit Switch: The Nikon AF-S Nikkor 300mm lens features a focus limit switch that allows you to focus quicker when your subjects will be within a narrow range. The switch has two positions: Full (to use the entire focus range) and ∞-3m (when your subject is always at a distance of at least 9.9 feet).

Diaphragm: The lens is equipped with a rounded 9-blade diaphragm.
