About the Nikon AF-S DX 55-200mm Zoom Telephoto Lens
For shooting intense action across a soccer field or an Indy car as it comes screaming down the straightaway, you can't beat the speedy photo capture that a lens with fast autofocus delivers. That's why Nikon includes Silent Wave Motor (SWM) technology in their AF-S DX lenses — speed and accuracy.
The AF-S DX 55-200mm lens with SWM delivers exceptional telephoto ability, for capturing far-off subjects and taking detailed close-ups of nearby objects. And the built-in SWM gives you rapid and quiet autofocus. Picture a frame-filling photograph of a distant hot-air balloon, followed by a sparkling shot of your daughter's face as she watches it — all taken in a matter of seconds. With that kind of potential, this measures up as an unusually capable lens.
From the review Playing with the Nikon 55-200mm lens
"Overall, I found it to be a handy, lightweight lens that was ready to capture images with all kinds of focal distances. And it was certainly compact enough for me to grab and run with, as is necessary when you're taking pictures of kids or animals! I also found that for a comparatively inexpensive lens, the images were pretty sharp."

Features
Product Overview: This item is a 55-200mm, f4-5.6G ED (Extra-low Dispersion glass), AF-S DX Zoom-Nikkor lens, compatible with the Nikon DX formatted Digital SLR cameras (like the D-70). It is an ideal 3.6x zoom lens for portraits, sports, or wildlife. The lens includes a 52mm snap-on front lens cap (LC-52) a rear lens cap (LF-1), and a bayonet hood (HB-34). Auto Focus - Silent Wave (AF-S) is a type of focusing motor used in a number of AF-Nikkor lenses; the AF-S motor is very fast and quiet. AF-S lenses also have an "A/M" mode selector which allows the user to switch from automatic to manual focus with almost no lag time.
Silent Wave Motor (SWM): New compact rod-type motor enables ultra-high speed autofocusing with exceptional accuracy and super-quiet operation.
AF G-type lenses: Lenses that use D-Type technology which provide the camera with precise distance information for flash and ambient light exposure processes.
ED Glass Elements: There are two of these elements which minimize color imperfections and achieve superior optical performance.
Lenses: Lenses are coated with Nikon Super Integrated Coating which minimizes ghosting affects and flare, so that you can get even higher contrast and vivid images, even in challenging light operation.
Zoom Control: The lens features a large, textured manual zoom ring for ultimate zooming control.
Auto/Manual Focus: Autofocus operation is possible with select Nikon autofocus cameras (In this mode, the manual ring will not work); Manual focus via the focus ring possible with all Nikon SLR cameras. Note: Because there is no aperture ring on this lens, the aperture must be set on the camera.
Diaphragm: The lens is equipped with a fully-automatic, 9-bladed diaphragm that produces a nearly circular aperture. Out-of-focus images in front of or behind the subject are rendered as pleasing blurs.
Bayonet Hood: The supplied HB-34 bayonet hood extends approximately 1-3/4" beyond the front of the lens, and shades the aperture opening from direct sunlight that causes flaring. When not in use, the hood can be stored on the lens by mounting it in reverse position.
Optional Accessories (available from Nikon): Compatible optional accessories include: 52mm screw-in filters.

I purchased the camera and lens package for my wife. She had used it at school and liked it. When she got it for herself she loved it! Recommend this to anyone that loves to take excellent pictures without being a pro.
