Our take on the Nikon AF-S VR 70-300mm Lens

This Nikon AF-S series lens gives you the impressive telephoto power and fast autofocus you need for taking rapid-fire shots of far-off subjects. Its versatile focal range and optical performance make it a great choice for use with Nikon digital SLR cameras. Plus, its Vibration Reduction technology lets you take sharp, in-focus photographs in all sorts of lighting conditions. Here's how it works.

We've all taken a picture and had it turn out blurry because our hands moved a little while we were capturing the shot. Vibration Reduction works around this problem. Built-in motion sensors steer a special set of optical elements inside the lens, neatly compensating for camera movement and stabilizing the image. You get much sharper pictures — even in low-light conditions where hand motion can easily cause blurred images with a regular lens. VR lenses are much appreciated by photographers who don't like to carry along a tripod on every excursion, but who require crisp photos as a matter of course.

High-tech Vibration Reduction isn't the only advantage provided by this lens. A built-in Silent Wave Motor makes autofocus very fast and nearly silent. And Nikon uses ED (Extra-Low Dispersion) glass elements to ensure accurate, razor-sharp images.

    Features

Product Overview: This item is a 70-300mm, f/4-f/5.6G, AF-S IF-ED Zoom-Nikkor lens, compatible with Nikon digital SLRs and other Nikon cameras. The lens includes a 67mm snap-on front lens cap (LC-67), a rear lens cap (LF-1), and a bayonet hood (HB-36).

Optics: Two Nikon Extra-Low Dispersion (ED) glass elements deliver superior optical performance for both digital and 35mm photography. ED glass minimizes chromatic aberrations, contributing to superb contrast and resolution performance. The non-rotating front element allows you to easily use circular polarizing filters and the Nikon Wireless Close-Up Speedlight System.

Built-in CPU: The lens has a built-in CPU which allows it to communicate with the camera body for focus and exposure functions. A set of CPU contacts is located on the lens mount for interfacing with the camera body.

Zoom Control: This high-power 4.3x Super Telephoto Zoom-Nikkor lens approximates the picture angle performance of a 105-450mm lens on 35mm SLR. The lens features a large, textured manual zoom ring for ultimate zooming control.

Auto/Manual Focus: Auto-Focus operation is possible with select Nikon Auto-Focus cameras; Manual focus via the focus ring possible with all Nikon SLR cameras. A Silent Wave Motor (SWM) enables fast and quiet auto-focusing, along with quick switching between auto-focus and manual operation. Note: Because there is no aperture ring on this lens, the aperture must be set on the camera.

Internal Focus (IF): Internal Focus (IF) provides fast and quiet auto focusing without changing the length of the lens, retaining subject-working distance through the focus range.

Vibration Reduction II: Vibration Reduction (VRII) minimizes the effects of camera shake allowing you to shoot handheld at as many as 4 shutter speeds slower than would otherwise be possible, assuring dramatically sharper images. You can turn vibration reduction on or off with the switch on the side of the lens. In addition, you can set the vibration reduction to one of the following modes:

    • Normal: The vibration reduction mechanism primarily reduces camera shake, making smooth panning shots possible.
    • Active: The vibration reduction mechanism reduces camera shake when taking pictures from a moving vehicle. In this mode, the lens does not automatically distinguish panning from camera shake.

Distance Information: The shooting distance scale, located on the barrel of the lens, is graduated in feet and meters from 1.5m (5 ft.) to infinity. For more accurate exposure control, subject distance information is transmitted from the lens to the camera body, providing 3D Matrix Metering and 3D Multi-Sensor Balanced Fill Flash with appropriate Nikon cameras and Speedlights.

Flash Compatibility: This lens is compatible with all Nikon cameras having built-in flash. No vignetting occurs when a built-in flash is used.

Diaphragm: The lens is equipped with a fully-automatic, 9-bladed diaphragm that produces a nearly circular aperture. Out-of-focus images in front of or behind the subject are rendered as pleasing blurs.

Bayonet Hood: The supplied HB-36 bayonet hood extends approximately 2-1/4" beyond the front of the lens, and shades the aperture opening from direct sunlight that causes flaring. When not in use, the hood can be stored on the lens by mounting it in reverse position.

Optional Accessories (available from Nikon): Compatible optional accessories include: 62mm screw-in filters, including circular polarizing filter II. Note: Teleconverter rings are incompatible with this lens.

Great lens, it is a large lens but well worth it. It takes great pictures and
after all that is why we have it in the first place! I would certainly recommend
    it to a friend.

Upgraded my basic 70-300 to the VR lens for my D300. The VR aspect of this lens makes it worth the price. Have been a Nikon user going all the way back to the Photomic F and will never change.....
