Nikon

Our take on the Nikon AF VR Zoom Nikkor 80-400mm f/4.5-5.6D ED Lens

Snap crystal-clear images of distant wildlife, people, and more

Nikon designed the AF VR Zoom Nikkor 80-400mm lens to take incredibly clear photos of distant subjects. This high-performance lens captures accurate, razor-sharp images, thanks to three ED (Extra-Low Dispersion) glass elements. You'll be able to record great closeups of wildlife without disturbing them in their natural habitat. And this lens's focal range works well for snapping portraits of people, so you can zoom in for candid pics of your children and then stage a family portrait session.

Sharper photos with built-in vibration reduction

The lens has built-in vibration reduction so your photos will come out crisp in all different sorts of lighting conditions. Built-in motion sensors steer a special set of optical elements inside the lens, neatly compensating for camera movement and stabilizing the image. You get much sharper pictures — even in low-light conditions where slower shutter speeds and hand motion can easily cause blurred images with a regular lens.

    Features

Overview: This item is an AF VR Zoon-Nikkor 80-400mm, f/4.5-f/5.6, telephoto lens, optimized for edge-to-edge sharpness when using both the Nikon FX- (23.9 x 36mm) and DX- format image sensors.

Construction: The three Extra-low Dispersion (ED) elements ensure high resolution, high contrast pictures even at maximum aperture.

Nikon Super Integrated Coating (SIC): SIC offers superior color performance and substantially reduced ghosting and flare.

Built-in CPU: The lens has a built-in CPU which allows it to communicate with the camera body for focus and exposure functions. A set of CPU contacts is located on the lens mount for interfacing with the camera body.

Auto Focus: A switch on the lens can be set to manual or autofocus. While this lens can be used with the Nikon D40 and D60 camera bodies, because it has no focus motor the Autofocus feature will not work.

Zoom Control: The lens features a large, textured manual zoom ring for easy zooming control.

Vibration Reduction (VR): Vibration reduction minimizes the effects of camera shake, allowing you to shoot handheld at as many as 3 shutter speed stops slower than would otherwise be possible, assuring dramatically sharper images. You can turn vibration reduction on or off with the switch on the side of the lens. VR has two modes; Mode 1 reduces vibration while the shutter button is lightly pressed and at the instant the shutter button is released, Mode 2 reduces vibration only at the instant the shutter button is released.

    Aperture: The adjustment ring allows aperture settings of f/4.5 (80mm only), f/5.6, f/8, f/11, f/16, f/22, and f/32.

Diaphragm: The lens is equipped with a fully-automatic, 9-blade diaphragm that produces a nearly circular aperture. Out-of-focus images in front of or behind the subject are rendered as pleasing blurs.

Tripod Collar: The tripod collar is detachable so it can be removed when not needed.

Focus Range Limit: If the distance to your subject is typically either 11.5' or less, or 16.4' or more, the focus limit switch allows you to fix the focus range to reduce focusing time. The range can be limited to 7.5' to 11.5' or 16.4" to infinity.
