Many aspiring shutterbugs start out their SLR careers with an 18-55mm kit lens, and that's a great beginning point. But when it comes time to add a new lens to your camera bag, what should you choose? One great choice might be this bright, medium telephoto "portrait length" lens, the Nikkor AF-S 85mm f/1.8G. With a focal length of 85mm on full-frame cameras, and 127.5 on DX-format cameras, you'll be taking close-ups and portraits that command your audience's attention.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Excellent lens Does well in low light conditions. Auto focus doesn't perform well. Switched it to manual focus & it remedied the "problem"

Pros: sharp, excellent in low light, beautiful bokeh (manual focus)

Cons: the auto focus is a bit sluggish.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This lens is quiet and sharp, and creates beautiful bokeh and nice creamy backgrounds. I love the images I get with this lens.

Pros: Quiet, Sharp, Nice Compression

Cons: Slow to grab focus in low light.

Why pay more???

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This is the best portrait lens, dollar for dollar, you can buy. I was choosing between this lens and f1.4 version. But after trying out both of them, I couldn't justify spending the extra $1200 dollar for f1.4. The f1.8 is sharper then the 1.4, in my opinion and the color rendition rivals the nikon 70-200 vr ll. This lens is also lighter. So if you are a hobbyists or an enthusiast, this is a great option.

Pros: Supper sharp, light weight, low price.

Cons: Slow focus, plastic construction.

Take the sharpest lens , and all the research, money and time spent by you on selecting a great lens and then have it shipped by the worlds worst shipper... This nikon lens in its nikon packaging was put into a brown cardboard box flat against the box floor, tight against the side of the box and tight against the top of the box. Foam peanuts filled the rest of the box which did nothing to protect this lens. This lens got pounded during shipping from Crutchfield to me. Every time this box was handled, dropped, thrown by ups, the lens was basically handled, dropped, and thrown. A delicate glass lens. Awful. How could it be any worse?

Must have prime

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I have the 35mm and 50mm 1.8 primes and this one is by far my favorite. It provides excellent subject isolation. It is a great portrait lens.

Pros: Bokeh

Cons: AF speed a tad slow

Nice Portrait Lens

Lens is mounted on d7100 body. Though lens was intended for a full frame it works well with my D7100. Nice shoulder/head shots.

Pros: Sharp and nice bokeh

Cons: AF sometimes not as accurate as I like

Warranty Information

Overview: The Nikon AF-S Nikkor 85mm f/1.8G lens is a fixed focal length lens with a fast f/1.8 aperture for high quality portraits and other low-light applications. It is designed for use with FX/35mm format cameras, but has been optimized for edge-to-edge sharpness on both FX and DX-format D-SLRs. When mounted on a DX-format camera, the angle of view is reduced and equivalent focal length becomes approximately 127mm (see Specifications below).

Nikon Super Integrated Coating (SIC): Nikon's Super Integrated Coating (SIC) offers superior color performance and substantially reduced ghosting and flare, by enhancing light transmission.

Silent Wave Motor (SWM): The exclusive Nikon Silent Wave Motor (SWM) enables fast, accurate, and quiet auto focus.

Internal Focus: Internal Focus (IF) provides fast and quiet autofocus without changing the length of the lens, retaining working distance throughout the focus range.

Focus Mode Switch: The Focus Mode switch on the barrel of the lens lets you easily switch between manual focus and auto focus. If you want to enable auto focusing, the camera must be set to Auto Focus, and the switch on the lens needs to be set to "M/A". With most Nikon D-SLRs, the lens gives you a manual override option, allowing you to rotate the separate focus ring while pressing the shutter release halfway.

Diaphragm: The lens is equipped with a rounded 7-blade diaphragm, which renders a more natural appearance of out-of-focus image elements.

Lens Hood: The lens comes with the HB-62 bayonet-type lens hood. The hood adds approximately 1-5/8" to the overall length of the lens. You can invert the hood and snap it onto the lens for storage, if desired.

Customer Q&A

Crutchfield asked
Why did you buy this?

I have the 20mm lens, so I wanted/needed a portrait lens with f/1.8. After doing some research, the 105/135mm lens but too pricey, this 85mm f/1.8 has everything I'm looking for. Hopefully, Nikon doesn't update this lens soon. they introduced it way back in 2012. [ SALLVADOR  Dec 30, 2015 ]
