Best entry-level DSLR

This is an awesome camera!!! Very light and takes professional grade pictures. I was lucky enough to grab a great deal from Crutchfield. This is by far the best camera for your money. For all those thinking of getting an entry-level DSLR without hurting your pocket too much this is your best bet.

Excellent capable camera

I bought D40 at the time D5000 was on the shelves. I did a lot of research and concluded that for video, I want a camcorder anyway, and megapixels are not what improves picture quality. We made excellent pictures with a 2 mpx Canon point-and-shoot, so a DSLR with good lenses was what I wanted. It is the lenses, not mpx, that define quality.
Anyway, the camera is excellent. Autofocus can be a bit slow to catch hummingbirds in flight or perched. But using manual focus on a 55-200VR (that I bought with the D40) I was able to do that too.
I highly recommend the D40: save money on the body (which is excellent nontheless), get better lenses and the SB-400 flash, and you will not regret it. BTW, I think that the well known D40 overexposure flaw might be fixed in firmware 1.1; at least I did not observe it yet.

Best Camera poor timing!!!

Best Camera =)
By far the best camera I have ever had. I worked at different photo labs through Florida and I have had every brand imaginable including Nikon. The D40 is light weight and 95 percent of the time the pictures come out like a professional has taken them. I would recommend the external flash, more than once I have covered the flash not realizing it.
Poor timing :(
No more than 4 days after I bought the camera through Cruthfield they released a rebate.

Excellent step up from Point and Shoot

Previous to last week, I have always been satisfied with your run-of-the-mill digital point and shoot camera. They take fine pictures, and are very portable.
SLR's, on the other hand, are a bit bulky, take more work to get ready for taking pictures, and all of the options and controls can be a bit daunting.
This shouldn't stop you from trying out the D40. While those drawbacks may still apply, the photo quality of this camera is so far beyond anything I've ever used in a "normal" camera, it's mind blowing.
Focus is automatic, Zooming is quick and easy. The shutter speed is excellent, and taking action shots is as easy as can be. And no chance of missing that great shot, as you can easily take pictures as fast as you can press the button.
The same goes for low light conditions. The flash works well, but it isn't needed nearly as often as it is on the cheapies... I've taken indoor photos with no flash and low lighting, and the pictures are still excellent.
I highly recommend this camera to anyone trying to test the SLR waters. Once you do it, though, you won't go back...
