About the Nikon Coolpix L830

David Brown

Its 34X optical zoom lens offers extended range to get great close-ups of distant subjects. Plus, its wide-angle performance is perfect for shooting grandiose landscapes or large group shots at family gatherings. With that kind of versatility, this camera is ideal for documenting your travels or photographing team sports from the sideline or the bleachers.

Still not close enough?

On the off chance this camera's 34X optical zoom isn't enough, Nikon's Dynamic Fine Zoom can get you even closer. It uses sophisticated digital enhancement to double the L830's zoom capability to a whopping 68X with minimal image degradation. That's enough zoom to zero in on a bird way up in that tree in the neighbor's yard. You'll have a hard time matching that performance without investing in some serious DSLR gear.

Shoot from the hip or above your head

Shooting from low angles introduces a unique perspective into your photography. With the Coolpix L830, you won't have to lay down on the ground to frame low-angle shots. The 3-inch LCD monitor pulls out for tilting up and down, so you can hold the camera down low and still line up your shot accurately. It's also great for holding the camera above your head when you're in a crowd, so you can get great close-up shots of the band at a concert or HD video of your child in the school play.

    Recording Features

LCD Monitor: The Nikon Coolpix L830 has a 3" TFT LCD monitor featuring approximately 921,000 pixels, an anti-reflection coating, and a six-level brightness adjustment. The angle of the LCD monitor can be lowered down to approximately 85° or raised upward to about 90° to allow you to take photos at high or low angles. The LCD monitor has approximately 99% horizontal and vertical coverage in the shooting mode and 100% coverage in playback mode. There is no separate viewfinder on the camera.

Image Sensor: The Coolpix L830 features a 1/2.3" CMOS image sensor with a total pixel count of approximately 16.79-million pixels. The effective pixel count is 16.0-million.

Optics: The Coolpix L830 digital camera uses a Nikkor glass zoom lens for superb image quality. Every aspect of the lens manufacturing process is controlled by Nikon. The Nikkor lens is designed for the specific camera and image sensor combination. The Coolpix L830 uses a 34x optical zoom, that is equivalent to a 22.5-765mm lens in 35mm photography. Coupled with the 4x digital zoom, the camera's total zoom capability is 136x. The angle of view is equivalent to that of approximately 3060mm lens (35mm format).

Dynamic Fine Zoom: When using the digital zoom, the image quality can be degraded the farther you zoom in. The Dynamic Fine Zoom, which is up to 2x the optical zoom, allows you to effectively double the optical zoom without much picture degradation. The zoom display turns blue when Dynamic Fine Zoom is in effect. Beyond 2x digital zoom, picture degradation increases dramatically, and the zoom display turns yellow.

Vibration Reduction (VR) Image Stabilization: The Coolpix L830's Vibration Reduction (VR) Stabilization System effectively corrects blur that commonly occurs when shooting at slow shutter speeds or when zoomed in. The camera utilizes a combination of lens-shift and electronic vibration reduction technology to reduce the effect of camera shake when recording.

Built-in Memory: The camera has a built-in 59 MB internal memory for storing still images and movies with sound. Images will be saved to the internal memory when no memory card is inserted.

Recording Media: In addition to the built-in memory, images can be recorded onto SD, SDHC, or SDXC Memory cards. When an SD Memory card is inserted in the camera, the images are automatically recorded onto the card. The camera can support SD cards up to 2 GB, SDHC cards from 4 GB to 32 GB, and SDXC cards of 64 GB or 128 GB. Memory cards with a Speed Class rating of 6 or faster are recommended for recording movies.

Image Sizes: The Coolpix L830 records still images in JPEG format, as well as High Definition and Standard Definition movies in MOV format (Video: MPEG-4 AVC/H.264; Audio: LPCM stereo). You have a choice of the following still image and movie options:

    • Still Images:
      • 16M: 4608 x 3456 High Quality 1:4 compression ratio
      • 16M: 4608 x 3456 Standard Quality 1:8 compression ratio
      • 8M: 3264 x 2448
      • 4M: 2272 x 1704
      • 2M: 1600 x 1200
      • VGA: 640 x 480
      • 16:9 12M: 4608 x 2592
      • 1:1: 3456 x 3456
    • Movies:
      • 1080/30p: 1920 x 1080 High Quality
      • 1080/60i: 1920 x 1080 Standard Quality
      • 720/30p: 1280 x 720
      • iFrame 720: 1280 x 720
      • 480/30p: 640 x 480
    • HS Movies:
      • HS 240/8x: 1/8x speed playback (record up to 10 sec; playback 80 sec)
      • HS 480/4x: 1/4x speed playback (record up to 15 sec; playback 60 sec)
      • HS 720/2x: 1/2x speed playback (record up to 30 sec; playback 1 min)
      • HS 1080/0.5x: 2x speed playback (record up to 2 min; playback 1 min)

Shooting Modes: You can choose one of the following shooting modes:

    • Easy Auto Mode: The camera automatically determines an appropriate shooting mode when you frame a picture, allowing you to easily take pictures with a shooting mode that suits the scene. Easy Auto Mode scenes include: Portrait, Landscape, Night Portrait, Night Landscape, Close-up, Backlighting, and Other Scenes.
    • Auto Mode: A mode used for general shooting. In Auto Mode, you can apply the macro mode and exposure compensation when shooting pictures. You can choose a flash mode and activate the self-timer.
    • Scene Mode: You can manually select a scene mode with settings optimized for the shooting situation: Portrait, Landscape, Sports, Night Portrait, Party/Indoor, Beach, Snow, Sunset, Dusk/Dawn, Night Landscape, Close Up, Food, Museum, Fireworks Show, Black & White Copy, Backlighting, Easy Panorama, and Pet Portrait.
    • Special Effects Mode: Effects can be applied to images when shooting. You can choose from the following special effects: Soft, Nostalgic Sepia, High-contrast monochrome, High Key, Low Key, Selective Color, Pop, Super Vivid, Cross Process, and Toy Camera Effect 1 & 2.
    • Smart Portrait: Using face priority to recognize human faces, the shutter is automatically released when a smile is detected. A skin softening option can smooth the skin tones in human faces.

Continuous Shooting: You can set the camera to take one picture at a time or multiple images by selecting one of the following options:

    • Single: The camera records one picture each time the shutter release button is pressed.
    • Continuous H: While the shutter-release button is held down, up to 5 pictures are taken at a rate of about 6.7 frames per second (fps) when image mode is set to 16M (4608 x 3456).
    • Continuous L: While the shutter-release button is held down, up to 33 pictures are taken at a rate of about 2.1 frames per second (fps) when image mode is set to 16M (4608 x 3456).
    • Continuous H 120 fps: Up to 50 frames are captured at a speed of about 1/120 seconds. (Image size is VGA 640 x 480)
    • Continuous H 60 fps: Up to 25 frames are captured at a speed of about 1/60 seconds. (Image size is 1M 1280 x 960)
    • Best Shot Selector: The BSS is recommended for situations in which inadvertent camera movement can produce blurred pictures, or when parts of the image are prone to under- or over-exposure. When BSS is on, the camera takes shots while the shutter-release button is pressed, to a maximum of ten. The images are compared and the sharpest picture is saved to the internal memory or memory card.
    • Multi-Shot 16: Each time the shutter release button is pressed, the camera takes 16 consecutive "thumbnail" images at a rate of about 30 frames per second, and arranges them into a single 5M (2560 x 1920) image.

Self-timer: The camera is equipped with a 10-second timer for self-portraits, or a 2-second timer for preventing camera shake caused by pressing the shutter release.

Focus Area Selection: You can select between the following Focus Area Selection methods to determine where the camera focuses:

    • Face Detection: When the camera recognizes a face (front view only), the camera will focus on the face automatically. The camera can recognize up to 12 faces depending on shooting and exposure mode.
    • Center: The camera focuses on the subject in the center of the frame.

Macro Mode: Macro mode is used for taking pictures of objects as close as 0.4". The flash may be unable to light entire subject at distances of less than 1 feet 8 inches.

Focus Lock: The Focus Lock feature is used to focus on off-centered subjects in the frame while shooting in Center AF mode.

AF-Assist Illuminator: If lighting is poor, the AF-assist illuminator may light to assist the focus operation when the shutter-release button is pressed halfway. The illuminator has a range of about 16' at the maximum wide-angle position and 16' at the maximum telephoto position. You can turn this function on or off, as desired.

Blink Warning Function: The Blink Warning function is available when you are shooting in Easy Auto, Portrait, or Night Portrait mode. When the camera detects that one or more human subjects may have blinked, the blink warning screen is displayed. The subject is framed by a yellow border, allowing you to check the picture and decide whether or not to take another picture.

Exposure Compensation: You can alter the exposure from the value suggested by the camera, making pictures brighter or darker. You can adjust the exposure from -2.0 to +2.0 EV in 1/3 steps.

ISO Settings: Sensitivity is the measure of how quickly the camera reacts to light. The higher the sensitivity, the less light needed to make an exposure. The camera features ISO settings of Auto, 125, 200, 400, 800, 1600, and 3200.

White Balance: You can set the White Balance to Auto, Daylight, Incandescent, Fluorescent, Cloudy, or Flash. You can also choose Preset Manual and use a neutral-colored object as a reference to set the white balance under unusual lighting conditions.

Built-in Flash: The Coolpix L830 has a built-in Speedlite flash with a range of 1'-8" to 29' (Wide angle) and 5' to 14' (Telephoto). You can choose from the following flash modes:

    • Auto: Flash fires automatically when lighting is poor.
    • Auto with Red-eye Reduction: Pre-flash fires before main flash to reduce red-eye effect.
    • Flash Off: Flash will not fire, even when lighting is poor.
    • Fill Flash: Flash will fire whenever a picture is taken.
    • Slow Sync: Auto flash combined with slow shutter speeds.

In-Camera Red-Eye Fix: If the camera detects red-eye after the pre-flash has fired, advanced red-eye reduction processing is used to further reduce red-eye, slightly increasing the time required before the next picture can be taken.

    Play, Edit and Print Functions

Playback Menu: The following options are available in the playback mode:

    • Quick Retouch: You can compare the original photo side-by-side with one with enhanced contrast and saturation, then save the one you like best.
    • D-Lighting: D-Lighting can be used to brighten dark or backlit subjects. While playing back an image, you can select the D-Lighting function, apply it, and save the corrected image without harming the properly exposed areas of the image.
    • Red-eye Correction: Corrects the red-eye effect that appears in the eyes when shooting the flash.
    • Skin Softening: The camera detects faces in images and creates a copy with softer facial skin tones.
    • Filter Effects: Choose from five filter effects to apply to the recorded image: soft, selective color, cross screen, miniature effect, painting, or toy camera effect.
    • Print Order: You can select images to print and the number of copies for each.
    • Slide Show: View pictures in the internal memory or on the memory card in an automatic slide show. If desired, you can loop the slideshow so it will continuously play. Maximum slide show duration is 30 minutes without operation.
    • Protect: You can select images that you want to protect from accidental deletion. Even protected images can be erased if the camera's internal memory or memory card are formatted.
    • Rotate Image: Recorded pictures can be rotated 90-degrees clockwise or counter-clockwise on the unit's LCD screen.
    • Small Picture: You can create a small copy of a recorded image. The copy will be stored as a JPEG file with a compression ratio of 1:8. You can choose from the following sizes: 640 x 480 (suited to television playback), 320 x 240 (suited to display on web pages), or 160 x 120 (suitable for email attachments).

Thumbnail Playback: During playback, you can view multiple thumbnail images (4, 9, or 16) at a time. While these "contact sheets" are displayed, you can use the multi-selector to highlight individual pictures. Highlighted pictures can be deleted, if desired.

Calendar Display: This feature displays a calendar allowing you to select and view pictures taken on the same date.

Playback Zoom: During playback, you can enlarge a still image up to 10x. Once the image is zoomed, you can use the multi-selector to scroll around to non-visible portions of the image. You can record a new picture of the cropped image by pressing the shutter button.

Multi-Language Menu: You can choose from 36 different menu display languages including English, Spanish or French.

Printing Pictures: You can print pictures stored in the internal memory or on the memory card by using the Print Set option in the playback menu. Using DPOF (Digital Print Order Form), you can designate which images to print, and how many copies to print. Pictures can be printed as followed:

    • Printer or Photo Lab: insert the memory card into a printer, or take the memory card to a digital photo lab (images stored in the internal memory need to be transferred to a memory card prior to printing).
    • PictBridge-compatible Printer: connect the camera to a PictBridge-compatible printer via USB cable
    • Transferring to Computer: transfer the images to a computer before printing them via USB

    Customer Q&A

    Q
I just recently got this camera, and also have been having issues with blurry pictures, usually if anyone (kids) moves the pics are blurry. I'd say I have to try 5 or 6 to hope one turns out well. Is there some sort of setting or theme that works better for this? I've also had some issues where the flash doesn't always work even though it's open. If it isn't working, I need to hold the button to take the picture halfway down for a second or two to get the flash to "engage". Has anyone else had similar issues? I am far from a pro photographer so any info is greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Hi Kyle, I'm very far from a pro photographer myself. I bought this camera only for the occasional photo or two. I've not encountered any problems such as you're describing with blurry photos, although as I'm sure you're aware there are a number of settings within the menu for different environments. I'm reluctant to give you any info that might make your situation any worse as, again, I'm only average myself. But I will say that to my mind it seems like an answer to both your problems may be how you describe having to get the flash to "work", by holding down the picture button halfway for a second before shooting the photo. Holding this button down halfway a second or so is a requirement really under all circumstances as this is "priming" the camera lens to focus on the object you're photographing before actually taking the picture. I think in just instantly pressing the photo button you are probably not allowing the camera to focus properly. Steady hands are also a bonus. :) As it seems to solve the other issue you were having with the flash, it's evidently a requirement for that as well. Please don't quote me on any of this before you've tried it to see if it solves your problems. I hope this helps. :) Kind regards, James

I'm sorry Kyle but I am only 30 - 40 pics into my usage. No problem I've noticed but if I do, I'll be back into the mix here!

    Q
I recently purchased this camera and am really disappointed so far. I keep reading great reviews but so far I'm not impressed. I keep getting really blurry pictures... zoomed in and not zoomed in. I just keep it on the easy auto or regular auto setting (not a skilled photographer by any means) so I'm wondering if maybe I need to adjust the settings somehow? This is my first "hybrid" style camera... in the past I have just bought the regular compact style ones but wanted to get something a little nicer since I'm tired of the crappy quality I keep getting with the compact ones. Any help or suggestions would be much appreciated!!! I really want to love this camera and want to try to figure it out before I just return it. Thanks!

I have no idea why you having a problem with your camera, I bought this for my wife when her olympus she had for about 10yrs wouldn`t zoom out any more and I bought her this camera and she open up the box and took out the batteries for that Olympus and used them in her new camera started taken pictures and has not had any problem at all with her L830.

We've had ours for several months and it works great. I would advise you to go to any store that carries this camera and see if you get the same blurry pictures from the demo one at their store. If so, you may be shaking it or moving it when you are pushing the button to take pictures. If not, then there may be a problem with your camera or, like you said, some setting, but the default settings should be fine - they are on ours anyway. If you have access to a tripod you might try mounting it on a tripod and then take some pictures to see if you get better results. I'm guessing there's a problem with the autofocus on your camera, and if so, then you could call nikon and explain the test that you did above and see what they say. Good luck!

Go to page 49 in your manual or go to shooting mode and look for continuous shooting.

According to the user's manual, by holding the shutter button all the way down, the camera will take 5 pictures in quick succession. This will happen at the rate of 6 or 7 frames per second if the camera is set for 16 megapixel resolution (the speed varies slightly depending on the resolution setting). The user's manual is very complete and can be viewed online. It is not shipped with the camera.
