Let's see, "an equivalent range of 27-270mm," just what does that mean? Well, imagine you're on a whirlwind tour of San Francisco. At the wide end of the range, you can fit almost all of your fancy hotel room in the picture, or take a shot of the Golden Gate bridge and Alcatraz together. The middle ranges will snag you that perfect portrait of your spouse enjoying the antics of the lazy seals on Pier 39, and at full zoom you can get a close-up of the seal ringleader — or a cool, compressed-perspective shot of the cable car coming over the top of the hill.
Now you know why, if you can only pack one lens, this 10-100mm f/4-5.6 lens is the perfect choice to document your travels, because it has the versatility to bring home every opportunity with clarity and impact. Vibration reduction helps even your long-zoom shots to be captured without the motion blur that results from shaky hands. And meticulously designed optical elements keep all your shots sharp and free of color fringing.

Nikon 10-100mm f/4.0-5.6 1 Nikkor Lens Reviews
Average Customer Review:
Great General Purpose Lens
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)
The Nikon 10-100mm f/4.0-5.6 1 Nikkor Lens is a great all around lens for any Nikon 1 camera (CX Mount). It is the equivalent of 28-270mm zoom on a 35mm full frame camera so you get everything from wide angle to a relatively strong telephoto (but not enough reach for birding, etc.). Such a lens is often referred to as a travel zoom or super zoom and allows users to have one lens on for most needs. Compared to some other lenses on the Nikon 1 system, this lens is a bit heavier and bulkier, but it isn't anywhere near as big and bulky as the 10-100mm PD zoom that is also available (that one is primarily for video). The weight seems to be due to the relatively stout design as it is made of metal and is probably more durable than some of the cheaper plastic Nikon 1 lenses. The image quality is good for a zoom like this with some chromatic aberration at the telephoto end (easily fixed in post-processing software). The relatively slow f/4-5.6 aperture means this isn't going to be the lens for people to catch indoor action under dim lighting. The image stabilization, however, makes it so a person can shoot down to 1/15 second for relatively static subjects.
Pros: Well made, good materials, good image quality, covers a wide range of typical focal lengths. Probably the best choice for Nikon 1 if you want an all around lens so that you don't have to change lenses often.
Cons: A little bit heavy but is still proportional with Nikon 1 bodies (doesn't make them off balance). Some chromatic aberration at the long end. Not as sharp as the fixed focal length lenses (primes) for the Nikon 1 cameras.

Overview: The Nikon 1 Nikkor VR 10-100mm f/4-5.6 lens is a compact telephoto zoom lens, designed exclusively for Nikon 1 interchangeable lens format digital cameras, such as the J3, J2, J1, V2, V1, and S1. The focal length is equivalent to an 27-270mm in 35mm photography. It comes with the LC-N55 snap-on 55mm front lens cap, and the LF-N1000 rear lens cap.
Retractable Lens Mechanism: The lens has a retractable mechanism that makes the lens more compact. Before the lens is ready to use, you must first press the zoom ring lock button and rotate the lens. The lens extends approximately 5/8" to 2-1/2" when in use.
Optics: The 10-100mm lens has 19 elements in 12 groups, including 3 aspherical lens elements, 2 ED lens elements, and HRI lens elements. HRI stands for High Refractive Index lens. One HRI lens can compensate for both field curvature and spherical aberrations that several normal glass elements can offer. The 10-100mm is called an IF lens, as only the internal lens group shifts during focusing.
Diaphragm: The lens is equipped with a rounded 7-blade diaphragm to provide softly blurred backgrounds for portraits.
Vibration Reduction: The Nikon 1 VR 10-100mm lens has built-in Vibration Reduction lens technology that improves image stability by automatically compensating for camera shake. The lens shift action is performed using voice coil motors (VCMs).
