This tiny camera captures all the big moments

Nikon Coolpix S01

The ultra-compact Nikon S01 is small enough to take everywhere. (Silver model shown).

If you want to capture great moments when they happen, then your camera has to be there. At 3/4 of an inch thick, Nikon's Coolpix S01 is small enough to slip in your pocket and take everywhere — so no great shot is lost to that sad phrase: "I didn't feel like lugging my camera along." And because it's a Nikon, you can count on its high-quality lens and advanced image processing for detailed photos and crisp HD video, instead of relying on your smartphone's limited picture-taking prowess.

Those spur-of-the moment photos and videos, whether it's your child's first steps or an impromptu get-together with friends, will look sharp, no custom settings required. Auto mode lets you point and shoot without worrying about lighting details. Plus, the intuitive touchscreen display means you won't spend more time trying to learn to navigate a complex menu system than you do reviewing your photos and movies.

Creative touches and built-in memory

Despite the fact that it can fit in the palm of your hand, the S01 includes powerful editing features, such as pre-shot special effects like Monochrome and Sepia for stylized shooting modes. Or apply creative filters like Fisheye and Miniature after shooting. The 7.3 GB internal memory ensures you've got plenty of room for storage without having to bother with memory cards or sticks.

    Super small............

Fine digital camera if you want or need the smallest available. The only thing smaller is a much more expensive 'spy' camera. The lack of a removable battery and memory card was disconcerting at first, but the internal memory at 7.3 Gb is more than adequate. A fully charged battery also provides about 180 pics and is easily recharged from any USB power outlet. I also found this to be a very rugged camera that holds up very well to use and abuse. At the original list price, it may have been considered too expensive. At the reduced list price and the now bargain sale price, it is a DEAL!

Pros: Smallest size, rugged, large internal memory, simple battery charging, low sale price

Cons: Lack of removable memory card, sealed internal battery(like Apple)

Nikon Coolpix S01 is not the best small camera but great to carry daily for taking pictures for watercolor painting ideas and colors. It keeps my art photos separate from my smart phone and can quickly be down loaded without tying up the smart phone. It is good for the price and probably be great for a first learning camera. I'm good with it's a 3x and not a 10X or 12X zoom.

    Cutest camera

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I bought the camera as a gift for 2 different people. I thought it was so cute I had to have one too. It is so small and compact which is great for when you are especially going out with a small purse. I know with how well cell phone cameras take pictures and all but this can zoom in a lot better. I also like the fact that it can store a good amount of photos especially since you can't use an SD card. Overall, for the price it is a great camera to have.

Pros: Sleek looking, small size but still easy to manage, nice size touch screen, holds a good number of pictures, zooms and has a flash

Cons: Zooming in sometimes comes out blurry in poor lighting

    Great small camera

Pros: Small. Great pictures. Cool design

Cons: Flash is touchy. Sometimes blurry due to shaking

Overview: The Nikon Coolpix S01 is the smallest Coolpix camera ever. It is only 3" wide and 2" high, and weighs only 3.4 ounces, and comes with a built-in Lithium-Ion rechargeable battery and a 7.3 GB internal memory. This 10.1 megapixel camera is equipped with a versatile 3x Zoom-NIKKOR glass lens, and a 2.5" touchscreen display.

2.5" LCD Monitor: The Coolpix S01 has a 2.5" TFT LCD touchscreen monitor, featuring approximately 230,000 dots, and an anti-reflection coating. The LCD monitor has approximately 96% horizontal and vertical coverage in the shooting mode and approximately 100% coverage in playback mode. There is no separate viewfinder on the camera.

Image Sensor: The Coolpix S01 features a 1/2.9" CCD image sensor with a total pixel count of approximately 10.34-million pixels. The effective pixel count is 10.1-million.

Optics: The Coolpix S01 digital camera uses a 3x Zoom-NIKKOR glass lens for superb image quality. The 4.1-12.3mm lens has an angle of view equivalent to that of a 29-87mm lens in 35mm photography. Coupled with the 4x digital zoom, the camera's total zoom capability is 12x. The angle of view is equivalent to that of an approximately 348mm lens (35mm format).

    Small and super

Written by Ralph Graves, Staff Writer - Creative, on 9/14/2012 10:41:00 AM

Sure, I've seen the pictures. But it wasn't until I took the Coolpix S01 out of the box that I realised just how small this camera actually is! How small? Well, I can place it in the palm of my hand, curl my fingers around it and completely hide it from view.

I admire how Nikon condensed all the functionality of a normal sized point-and-shoot camera into this compact camera. Of course, some compromises were made, but as I used the camera in the Crutchfield Labs taking test photos and videos, I quickly learned to work around them.

Virtually all the controls are on the touchscreen. But since the screen's so small, they're usually hidden. You have to navigate to them to make changes. But that's OK. The automatic settings do a great job in most situations. It does take a little time to navigate from photo to video mode, but once you're there, everything operates smoothly.

There's no removeable battery or memory card — they're both built-in. It just means you have to plug the camera into the charger rather than the battery. And since the camera has a mini-USB port and comes with a USB charging cable, you can recharge the camera's battery while you're transfering images from the S01 to your computer.

The built-in memory's pretty generous, and should be plenty for most people. Especially for casual photo and video shooting, such as vacation, party, wedding, etc. But if you're used to taking lots of HD video and swapping out memory cards as they fill up with your camera, you might have to plan your shooting a little more carefully with the S01 (or have a laptop handy to keep the S01's memory cleared out).

But for just having something to take along for those off-the-cuff photos, the compactness and functionality of the S01 is a combination that's tough to beat.
