About the Nikon Coolpix S5300

David Brown

Sharing shouldn't mean not caring about photo quality

Don't settle for smartphone photos just because you want to share them quickly. With the Wi-Fi enabled Nikon Coolpix S5300, you can have your cake and eat it too. Let's say you're trying to document your child's first birthday for her grandparents who live too far away to be there. With Nikon's free app for Apple® and Android™, you can set up automatic image transfer to your smartphone or tablet as you snap each shot of your daughter making a mess with that first piece of birthday cake. Then it's easy to email them or post to Facebook without having to manually transfer images to your computer first.

Keep the grandparents happy

Worried that your photos will come out dark because your living room doesn't have much light? The S5300's 16-megapixel CMOS sensor excels at capturing bright shots, so Grandma and Grandpa won't complain about what a lousy photographer you are. You can also capture the proceedings in full-HD video, so the grandparents can relive every tear as crazy Uncle Al scares his niece with his over-the-top rendition of "Birthday" by the Beatles.

All babies are cute, but just in case...

With 8X optical zoom, the S5300's Nikkor glass lens offers a broad range of shooting options, from wide-angle shots of the partygoers to close-ups of the birthday girl's priceless expression as she realizes how delicious cake is. Other cool features include Best Shot Selector — it can quickly fire off multiple shots with a single push of the shutter button. That makes it easier to choose the perfect shot to tuck into your thank-you notes. Want even better portraits? Nikon's Smart Portrait and Glamour Retouch offer lots of opportunity for improvement, from fixing red-eye to touching up blemishes. Not that your toddler will require any retouching. I'm sure she's perfect in every way.

    • Auto: Used for general photography; allows you to adjust a variety of settings to suit the conditions.
    • Scene Auto Selector: The camera automatically selects the optimum scene mode: Portrait (1-2 people), Portrait (3 or more people), Landscape, Night Portrait (1-2 people), Night Portrait (3 or more people), Night landscape, Close-up, Backlighting (subjects other than people), Backlighting (for portraits), and Other Scenes.
    • Scene: You can manually select a scene with settings optimized for that type of scene: Portrait, Landscape, Sports, Night portrait, Party/indoor, Beach, Snow, Sunset, Dusk/dawn, Night landscape, Close-up, Food, Museum, Fireworks show, Black & White Copy, Backlighting, Easy Panorama, and Pet portrait.
    • Special Effects: You can apply the following effects to images during shooting: Soft, Nostalgic Sepia, High-contrast monochrome, High key, Low key, Selective color, Pop, Super Vivid, Painting, Toy Camera effect (1 & 2), Cross Process, and Mirror.
    • Smart Portrait: Camera detects human faces and automatically releases the shutter when they smile. A skin softening option makes faces smoother.

Continuous Shooting: You can take photos one image at a time, or multiple images in a continuous fashion while the shutter button is pressed and held. There are several options for continuous shooting:

    • Continuous H: Records a maximum of 7 full resolution images at a rate of about 8.6 frames per second.
    • Continuous L: Records a maximum of 7 full resolution images at a rate of about 2 frames per second.
    • Pre-shooting Cache: To help avoid missing the shot, a series of photos are recorded at 11 fps while the shutter release is pressed halfway. When the button is pressed the rest of the way, the camera saves a maximum of 5 images, including the current image and two frames captured in the pre-shooting cache.
    • Continuous H 120: Each time the shutter release is pressed, images are captured at a high rate of speed (about 120 fps). A maximum of 50 VGA-sized images (640 x 480) are saved.
    • Continuous H 60: Each time the shutter release is pressed, images are captured at a high rate of speed (about 60 fps). A maximum of 25 images (1280 x 960) are saved.
    • Best Shot Selector: While the shutter release is held down, the camera captures up to 10 images and automatically saves the sharpest image.
    • Multi-shot 16: Each time the shutter button is pressed, the camera captures a series of 16 images and saves them as a single image. Frame rate is 30 fps, and the image is fixed at 2560 x 1920.

Color Options: You can record images in vivid color or save them in monochrome. Color options include: Standard color, Vivid Color, Black-and-white, Sepia, and Cyanotype.

Self-timer: The camera is equipped with a 10-second self-timer for self-portraits or a 2-second to prevent camera shake caused by pressing the shutter release button.

Flash: The built-in flash has a range of 1'-8" to 11' (Wide angle) and 5' to 6'-6" (Telephoto). You can choose from the following flash modes: Auto, Auto (with Red-eye reduction), Fill Flash, Slow Sync, and Off.
