Explore your creative side with in-camera editing

Since the Coolpix S6900's Scene Auto Selector mode makes it so easy to capture clear, crisp images without having to fiddle with a lot of settings, why not add your own creative touches for photos that just scream "you"? Make your photo look like a painting or blur your backgrounds right from the camera using one of the built-in editing effects. Touching up your selfies is simple with the Glamour Retouch tool. Can't decide which expression you like best? Use the S6900's Self Collage feature to combine up to nine separate photos in one cool collage. Setting up a "photo booth" of your own is fun and easy. Prop the camera up on its kickstand, set the time interval between shots and choose the number of photos (four or nine) you want for your collage.

It's a really great camera all-around

Sure, the Coolpix S6900 is packed with features for getting great selfies, but it's by no means limited to one application. Deceptively slim and stylish, it boasts an impressive 12X optical zoom that allows you to get within easy reach of objects in the distance. Having that kind of zoom in your pocket is great when you're at a concert or sporting event. The vari-angle LCD screen's 180-degree range of motion comes in handy when you're composing a shot from an odd angle. Most of the editing features that let you create glamorous self-portraits can also be used to enhance your everyday photography, but probably the best thing about the S6900 is just how easy it makes taking and sharing awesome photos. It takes away the guesswork, leaving you free to just have fun with it.

    Recording Features

Overview: The Nikon Coolpix S6900 is designed for taking self-portraits, and sharing the photos with your friends. The camera's Vari-angle LCD can flip 180° to let you frame your selfies. It also has a front shutter button and a built-in kick stand to position the camera at the perfect angle for self-portraits. With built-in Wi-Fi, you can instantly upload the photos to your smartphone and share with your friends on social media sites.

3.0" LCD Monitor: The Coolpix S6900 has a 3.0" TFT LCD monitor, featuring approximately 460,000 dots, and an anti-reflection coating. The Vari-angle monitor can flip out 180° and rotate 270° to allow you to face the monitor toward the front (for self-portraits) or the rear (traditional shooting position). You can also protect the monitor from scratches or fingerprints when not in use, by closing the monitor so that it is facing inward against the back of the camera. The monitor has a 98% horizontal and vertical frame coverage for shooting and 99% coverage for playback. You can adjust the brightness of the monitor from -2 to +2.

Note: There is no separate viewfinder on the camera.

Touch Panel: The monitor is a touch panel display that lets you perform many actions similar to the display on a smartphone:

    • Tapping: Select icons, select images in thumbnail playback mode, and perform touch shooting.
    • Dragging: Scroll through images in full-frame playback, move the visible portion of an image enlarged with playback zoom, and move sliders (adjusting exposure compensation)
    • Spreading/Pinching: Zoom in/out on an image in playback mode, and switch to thumbnail playback mode from full-frame mode

Image Sensor: The Coolpix S6900 features a 1/2.3" CMOS image sensor with a total pixel count of approximately 16.76-million pixels. The effective pixel count is 16.0-million.

Optics: The Coolpix S6900 uses a 12x NIKKOR glass lens for superb image quality. The 4.5-54mm lens has an angle of view equivalent to that of a 25-300mm lens in 35mm photography. Coupled with the 4x digital zoom, the camera's total zoom capability is 48x. The angle of view is equivalent to that of an approximately 1200mm lens (35mm format).

Built-in Wi-Fi: The camera has built-in Wi-Fi (compliant with 802.11b/g/n) with a range of approximately 33 feet, and a data rate of up to 20 Mbps. The camera's Wi-Fi capability can be used with iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad (running iOS 7.1.2, 8.1.2 or later), or smart devices running on the Android operating system (ver.4.0 and up). The camera's built-in NFC (Near-Field Communications) functionality allows you to wirelessly connect with compatible Android devices by simply touching the device on the camera's "N" logo (located on the left edge). The Wireless Mobile Utility application must be installed on the device. While the camera is connected to the smart device, you can take pictures remotely, download pictures as they are taken, view and/or download existing pictures on the camera, and share pictures via email or upload them to photo-sharing sites.

Vibration Reduction: The Nikon Coolpix S6900 offers Vibration Reduction (VR) to reduce blurring caused by camera shake when shooting. The camera uses the lens-shift method of Vibration Reduction when shooting still images, and a combination of lens-shift and electronic Vibration Reduction when recording movies.

Camera Stand: The camera has a built-in kick stand that can position the camera upright on a level and stable surface. The stand can be used for both portrait and landscape orientations. The stand can be locked in a fully open position (87°) or partially open position (67°). With the LCD monitor flipped out and inverted, you can easily frame your self portraits. The stand folds in to the back of the camera for storage.

Dual Shutter Release Buttons: The Coolpix S6900 has two shutter release buttons--one in the normal position on top of the camera body, and another on the front panel next to the lens. The front panel shutter release conveniently lets you hold the camera in one hand and take self-portraits using your thumb. This is similar to the way selfies are taken with a smartphone.

Recording Media: The Coolpix S6900 uses SD, SDHC, and SDXC memory cards to record still images and HD movies. In addition, the S6900 has a built-in 30MB internal memory for saving a few test images.

File Formats: The Coolpix S6900 records still images in JPEG format. HD and SD movies are recorded in MOV format (Video: H.264; Audio: LPCM stereo). You have a choice of eight still image size options and eight movie options:

    • Still Images:
      • 16M (high image quality): 4608 x 3456 (1:4 compression)

Shooting Modes: You can choose one of the following shooting modes:

    • Scene Auto Selector: The camera automatically selects the optimum scene mode for simple shooting: Portrait (close-up), Portrait (wide angle photos of large groups), Landscape, Night Portrait (close-up), Night Portrait (wide angle photos of large groups), Night Landscape, Close-Up, Backlighting (photos of subjects other than people), Backlighting (portraits), or Other Scenes. All you have to do is frame the picture.
    • Scene Mode: You can manually select a scene mode with settings optimized for the shooting situation: Portrait, Landscape, Sports, Night Portrait, Party/Indoor, Beach, Snow, Sunset, Dusk/Dawn, Night Landscape, Close Up, Food, Museum, Fireworks Show, Black and White copy, Draw, Backlighting, Easy Panorama, and Pet Portrait.
    • Special Effects Mode: You can choose from the following effects while shooting: Soft, Nostalgic Sepia, High-contrast Monochrome, High Key, Low Key, Selective Color, Pop, Super Vivid, Mirror, Cross Process, and Toy Camera Effect 1 & 2.
    • Smart Portrait: If the camera detects smiling faces, the shutter is automatically released without pressing the shutter-release button (Smile Timer). You can use the Glamour Retouch feature to make facial skin tones softer.
    • Glamour Mode: Effects that enhance human faces can be applied to images during shooting. In addition, each series of four or nine images captured at intervals with the self-collage function is saved as a one-frame image.
    • Auto Mode: A "point-and-shoot" mode with some user adjustments to suit the shooting conditions and type of shot you want to capture.

Continuous Shooting: You can take photos one image at a time, or multiple images in a continuous fashion while the shutter button is pressed and held. There are several options for continuous shooting:

    • Continuous H: Records a maximum of 7 full resolution images at a rate of about 9 frames per second.
    • Continuous L: Records a maximum of 7 full resolution images at a rate of about 2 frames per second.
    • Pre-shooting Cache: To help avoid missing the shot, a series of photos are recorded at 12 fps while the shutter release is pressed halfway. When the button is pressed the rest of the way, the camera saves a maximum of 5 images, including the current image and two frames captured in the pre-shooting cache.
    • Continuous H 120: Each time the shutter release is pressed, images are captured at a high rate of speed (about 120 fps). A maximum of 50 VGA-sized images (640 x 480) are saved.
    • Continuous H 60: Each time the shutter release is pressed, images are captured at a high rate of speed (about 60 fps). A maximum of 25 images (1280 x 960) are saved.
    • Best Shot Selector: While the shutter release is held down, the camera captures up to 10 images and automatically saves the sharpest image.
    • Multi-shot 16: Each time the shutter button is pressed, the camera captures a series of 16 images and saves them as a single image. Frame rate is 30 fps, and the image is fixed at 2560 x 1920.

Color Options: You can record images in vivid color or save them in monochrome. Color options include: Standard color, Vivid Color, Black-and-white, Sepia, and Cyanotype.

Self-timer: The camera is equipped with a 10-second self-timer for self-portraits or a 2-second to prevent camera shake caused by pressing the shutter release button.

Flash: The built-in flash has a range of 1'-8" to 9'-2" (Wide angle) and 4'-11" (Telephoto). You can choose from the following flash modes: Auto, Auto (with Red-eye reduction), Fill Flash, Slow Sync, and Off.

Playback Menu: You can view photos one at a time in full frame, or in a Thumbnail Playback of 4, 9, or 16 images. You can also zoom in to magnify a single image up to 10x. When playing back movies, you can pause/resume, rewind/advance, and adjust volume. Other playback menu options include: Quick Retouch, D-Lighting, Red-eye Correction, Glamour Retouch, Slide Show, Protect, Rotate Image, Small Picture, Voice Memo, Copy (between internal memory and memory card), Sequence Display Options, Choose Key Picture, Favorite Pictures, and Remove from Favorites.
