About the Nikon Coolpix S9900

Small camera, big possibilities

The Nikon Coolpix S9900 combines an impressive set of features in a compact camera that gives you plenty of room for exploration. 30X optical zoom lets you capture distant subjects in detail, but the S9900's reach isn't limited to far-away action. It can also be used for detailed portraits and close-ups of small subjects like flowers and insects. The S9900's vari-angle screen lets you hold the camera at any angle, so you can shoot everyday subjects from different perspectives or use the screen to overcome obstructions to your line of sight like crowds at a concert.

The Nikon Coolpix S9900's mode dial lets you explore manual shooting modes while 30X optical zoom gets you closer to the action.

Bring your adventures to life

Small and light enough to accompany you anywhere, the Coolpix S9900 is perfect for travel. Its built-in GPS and compass record the precise geographical location of each shot, anywhere in the world. Use the S9900's mapping system to find your way back to an interesting spot you've been to before, or to find your way around an unfamiliar area. Convenient points of interest are preloaded to help you find nearby landmarks and other sights. The camera's world map feature lets you save up to 30 locations so you get a complete point-by-point photographic overview of your travels once you're home again. You don't have to wait until then to let friends and family in on the fun. Nikon snapbridge technology with Wi-Fi and NFC touch pairing makes it simple to share your shots instantly using your compatible smartphone or tablet.

Control when you want it, convenience when you need it

While the Coolpix S9900 is fully capable of doing all the work necessary to get great results in most environments, the ability to control aperture and shutter speed opens up a world of creative potential. Manual controls come in handy when you have your own ideas about how you'd like your shot to come out. If you want a softer background in your portraits, give aperture priority mode a try. If you aren't happy with the result, the mode dial gives you quick access to other manual exposure modes, or you can just switch back to auto mode for point-and-shoot simplicity.  If you want to perfect your results, use the in-camera editing effects to add flair to your vacation photos and touch up your portraits.

Overview: The Nikon Coolpix S9900 allows you to create beautiful photos and Full HD videos and instantly share them right from your camera using the built-in Wi-Fi. The camera also has a built-in GPS receiver, which can record location data with every photo and video you take, so you can see on a map exactly where you've been.

Vari-Angle 3.0" LCD Monitor: The Coolpix S9900 has a 3.0" TFT-LCD monitor, featuring approximately 921,000 dots, and an anti-reflection coating. The Vari-Angle display lets you swing out the LCD panel 180°, and rotate the monitor up to 270° for framing high- and low-angle shots and self portraits. The monitor has a 98% horizontal and vertical frame coverage for shooting and 100% for playback. You can adjust the brightness of the monitor to one of six levels.

Note: There is no separate viewfinder on the camera.

Image Sensor: The Coolpix S9900 features a 1/2.3" CMOS image sensor with a total pixel count of approximately 16.76-million pixels. The effective pixel count is 16.0-million.

Optics: The Coolpix S9900 uses a 30x NIKKOR glass lens for superb image quality. The 4.5-135mm lens has an angle of view equivalent to that of a 25-750mm lens in 35mm photography. Coupled with the 4x digital zoom, the camera's total zoom capability is 120x. The angle of view is equivalent to that of an approximately 3000mm lens (35mm format).

Built-in Wi-Fi: The camera has built-in Wi-Fi (compliant with 802.11b/g/n) with a range of approximately 33 feet, and a data rate of up to 20 Mbps. The camera's Wi-Fi capability can be used with iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad (running iOS 7.1.2, 8.1.2 or later), or smart devices running on the Android operating system (ver.4.0 and up). The camera's built-in NFC (Near-Field Communications) functionality allows you to wirelessly connect with compatible Android devices by simply touching the device on the camera's "N" logo (located on the left edge). The Wireless Mobile Utility application must be installed on the device. While the camera is connected to the smart device, you can take pictures remotely, download pictures as they are taken, view and/or download existing pictures on the camera, and share pictures via email or upload them to photo-sharing sites.

Global Positioning System (GPS): The Coolpix S9900 is equipped with a GPS receiver, which, when enabled, encodes time and positioning data into your photos. All your image and movie files are geotagged, providing a visual travelogue that pinpoints the places you have been. These files can be integrated with many photo sharing sites, Google Maps, and Google+ to display maps showing where the photo was taken. In addition, the camera features an Electronic Compass and built-in mapping with Points of Interest to indicate nearby scenic and historic landmarks.

Vibration Reduction: The Nikon Coolpix S9900 offers Vibration Reduction (VR) to reduce blurring caused by camera shake when shooting. For still images and movies, there are three options: Standard VR (using the lens shift method), Hybrid VR (combining lens shift and electronic VR), or Off.

Recording Media: The Coolpix S9900 uses SD, SDHC, and SDXC memory cards to record still images and HD movies. In addition, the S9900 has a built-in 473 MB internal memory for saving images.

File Formats: The Coolpix S9900 records still images in JPEG format. HD and SD movies are recorded in MOV format (Video: H.264; Audio: LPCM stereo). Image quality can be set to Fine (1:4 compression ratio) or Normal (1:8). You have a choice of seven still image size options and six movie options:

    • Still Images:
      • 16M: 4608 x 3456

      • 2M: 1600 x 1200
      • VGA: 640 x 480
      • 16:9 12M: 4608 x 2592

      • 720/30p: 1280 x 720 (16:9)
      • 480/30p: 640 x 480 (4:3)
    • HS Movies:

      • HS 1080/0.5x: 1920 x 1080; 2x speed playback (record up to 2 min; playback 1 min)

Shooting Modes: Using the camera's top-mounted Mode Dial, you can select from the following shooting modes:

    • Auto: Used for general photography; allows you to adjust a variety of settings to suit the conditions.
    • P, S, A, M: Images can be shot with greater control by setting the shutter speed or aperture value manually. You can rotate the mode dial to the following modes:
      • Programmed Auto: Exposure automatically set with "flexible program" combinations of shutter speed and aperture.
      • Shutter-priority Auto: Shutter speed manually set and the camera automatically determines the aperture value.
      • Aperture-priority Auto: Aperture value manually set and the camera automatically determines the shutter speed.
      • Manual: The aperture value and shutter speed are manually set by the user.
    • Scene Modes: In the menu, you can select one of the following scene modes: Scene Auto Selector, Portrait, Landscape, Time-lapse movie, Sports, Night Portrait, Party/indoor, Beach, Snow, Sunset, Dusk/dawn, Night Landscape, Close-up, Food, Fireworks show, Backlighting, Easy Panorama, Pet portrait and Special Effects.
    • Smart Portrait: Camera detects human faces and automatically releases the shutter when they smile. A skin softening option makes faces smoother.
    • Short Movie Show: The camera creates a short movie up to 30 seconds long by recording and automatically combining multiple movie clips that are several seconds long.

Continuous Shooting: In addition to single frame shooting, the S9900 can shoot continuously at multiple speeds while the shutter release is pressed and held:

    • Continuous H: Up to 5 pictures are continuously shot at a rate of 7 fps.
    • Continuous L: Up to 11 pictures are continuously shot at a rate of 2.2 fps.
    • Pre-shooting Cache: To prevent missing the perfect moment, the camera begins saving images when the shutter release is pressed halfway, then shoots continuously at about 15 fps from the time the button is pressed until the time it is released. Up to 25 frames, including up to 5 frames in the cache, are saved. Image size is fixed at 1M (1280 x 960).
    • Continuous H 120 fps: Up to 50 frames are captured at a speed of about 1/120 seconds. (Image size is VGA 640 x 480)
    • Continuous H 60 fps: Up to 25 frames are captured at a speed of about 1/60 seconds. (Image size is 1M 1280 x 960)

Time-lapse Movies: The camera can automatically capture 300 still images at a specified interval to create time-lapse movies. The photos are shot at 1920 x 1080 and played by at 30 frames per second to create a movie that is approximately 10 seconds long. There are five time-lapse movie types:

    • Cityscape: Photos are shot at an interval of 2 seconds for a total of 10 minutes of recording time.
    • Landscape: Photos are shot at an interval of 5 seconds for a total of 25 minutes of recording time.
    • Sunset: Photos are shot at an interval of 10 seconds for a total of 50 minutes of recording time.
    • Night Sky: Photos are shot at an interval of 30 seconds for a total of 2.5 hours of recording time. This mode is suitable for recording the movement of stars.
    • Star Trails: Photos are shot at an interval of 30 seconds for a total of 2.5 hours of recording time. Star movement appears as lines of light due to image processing.

Self-timer: The camera is equipped with a 10-second self-timer for self-portraits or a 2-second to prevent camera shake caused by pressing the shutter release button.

Flash: The built-in flash has a range of 1'-8" to 19' (Wide angle) and 5' to 11' (Telephoto). You can choose from the following flash modes: Auto, Auto (with Red-eye reduction), Fill Flash, Slow Sync, and Off.

Playback Menu: You can view photos one at a time in full frame, or in a Thumbnail Playback of 4, 9, 16, or 72 images. You can also zoom in to magnify a single image up to 10x. When playing back movies, you can pause/resume, rewind/advance, and adjust volume. Other playback menu options include: Mark for Wi-Fi Upload, Quick Retouch, D-Lighting, Red-eye correction, Glamour Retouch, Slide show, Protect, Rotate Image, Small Picture, Copy (between internal memory and memory card), and Sequence display options.
