Why replace your factory radio?

Two good reasons - sound quality and cool features. A new car stereo offers power that's superior to most factory radios, along with more sophisticated tone controls. And most car stereos offer built-in or optional features that add safety and fun to life in your car, including inputs for your iPod or MP3 player, Bluetooth connectivity for hands-free cell phone calls, satellite radio or HD Radio reception, and connections for building an audio system in your car.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Thank you Aiwa for this great CD/receiver. I was worried about installing in my 97 Grand Cherokee because of the excellent factory sound. No need to worry, even with my factory speakers I get clean crisp sound even at sound levels that I would normally not listen at. This reciever has great features and great sound for a great price. Thank you Aiwa for the great product and Crutchfield for all the technical support.

Who needs an amp?

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I just installed this on Monday, so I can't speak to durability. But the sound is great! I have this powering 4" Polk db400's in front 5 1/4" Polk db525's in the back. The system's installed (by me) in a '94 Toyota Corolla. I was gonna take the amp and bazooka tube out of my truck and put in there, but no need. One of the features is a source level volume control. I have that cranked up to the max so I can just use about half the volume and get outstanding sound. It was a pretty easy install. The only pain in the but was grounding it, and in my impatience I failed to hook up one of the power leads. But after a call to tech service (very helpful, BTW..thx Rudy & Gabriel), I was on my way. The seller for me was the aux input, since I hardly listen to the radio. It gets really loud when at about 22 out of 36 on the volume scale. More than sufficient power, and clean sound coming out of the Polks. A feature-filled product for a very decent price. Crutchfield rocks!

Great sound. Great value.

Wanted good sound in my older Honda without buying a system that would exceed the value of my ride! Got more than I expected with this unit. Plenty of punch. Clean power. Full adjustment. No frills -- just great sound at a great value. Hard to believe I waited so long to have the company of good tunes on my long daily commute. The CD-X304 rocks. Crutchfield spelled out the specs, then delivered the performance I was seeking at a price I never thought I could find. Thanks, you've done it again, guys.

What a great unit for the price. I was looking to upgrade the factory stereo in my Wrangler to a better unit for a low price. This unit fits all of my needs, especially because my iPod fits it so well with the input plug. It has so many features that I wouldn't expect on a unit for such a low price as this. The fully detachable faceplate is a must for someone with a Jeep. I love the quality of sound and the ease of installation in an Aiwa is amazing. Great product, Great sound, Great value. I highly recommend it!

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Bought this unit to replace a stolen Alpine (lower end) unit. Sound is just as good, more EQ control though. Though I don't use the aux. input, if/when I get an IPod this should be very handy as FM transmitters are worthless. Looks are a bit goofy, the dimmer is nice, but you have to activate it manually, not automatically with your cars lights. Volume control takes getting used too, but is not bothersome. I do not have large speakers so I can't speak to the internal amp, or pre-amp out, however, if AIWA has kept up their quality (I have a 7 yr old home system that is very loud) I expect it will be great and durable.

Great radio for the money

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I bought this unit for my 1993 Volvo 940 Turbo wagon to replace the failing factory radio(Volvo CR-814). It has made a huge difference in sound quality. The unit was easy to use after spending a few minutes looking at the manual and working the controls. The display is easy to read. I like that it can store 12 AM presets instead of the usual 5 or 6. The auxillary input on the front of the unit is great for playing tracks from my Palm Zire 72. The radio reception is terrific, which is important to me for my long commute to work.

My only complaint is with Crutchfield's installation directions. The harness directions were missing important information on doubling up wires to power the front speakers, and directions to intall the unit in the radio-cavity were totally inadequate. I had to call tech support to get the wiring correct. This was surprising, this being the third radio I have bought from Crutchfield. It was only because I have installed a radio in a similar car that I was not totally frustrated. I have never been disappointed with the printed instructions until now. I hope they improve them for this model car.

[Editor's note: Unfortunately, though we have them for most vehicles, we do not have Crutchfield MasterSheetT installation instructions for this particular vehicle at this time.]

Great Radio 4 Real

Written By joe, Cypress, TX on Monday, November 14, 2005

This cd player replaced an old tape deck that the kids inserted more coins inside it than most vending machines had! It literally improved the radio reception and speaker performance a very significant amount. It was such an ease to install, good looking, performs well, and has the external aux output for ipods that makes it a gold medalist. Insert Rocky chorus here.

Paired this with alpine sds-080A's and kenwood kfc-6959ie's. this unit sounds awesome, great volume, lots of adjustment to the bass, h-bass rocks my car, everybody swears i have subs. wanted a decent system for my 1993 pontiac but didn't want to spend a ton for it. the whole thing cost me about 300, best money i spent. got way more that i ever thought i would, stock system doesn't even compare. love the stereo, would recommend to anyone who wants a great stereo at a cheap price, love the front input for my mp3 and the cd player works awesome. for $80 you can't beat it.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I bought this receiver for one purpose in mind, to stop using the FM transmitter for my ipod. I have a 2001 Mitsu Galant with 70,000+ miles. I wasn't looking to spend a ton of coin on a fancy receiver for a car I didn't plan to keep for more than two more years. I came across this unit, ordered it yesterday and received it today. Purchasing the wires specific for my vehicle made the installation a breeze for this was the first unit I have ever installed. My ipod has never sound better. Finally Cd quality music through my MP3 player. And when you average 40,000+ miles for year it's nice to hear the clarity of the music for a change instead of fighting static via the transmitter.

was easy on my 98 Saturn
make sure they send the wire adapter kit
Had it for 3 weeks and it works great.
No skips as of yet, plays burned CDs as well.
Excellent deal for the price.

-This is better than the 204, has a little more power, glad I picked this one.
-The Auxiliary input works really well with my Creative Nomad MP3 player. It has a leveler as well if your MP3 is too quiet.
-The H-Bass is ok if you are listening to Hip-Hop, etc... but I never use it. It doesn't really give clear bass.
-EQ presets work pretty well and make it easy to use.
-Controls are standard and you should have the radio setup the way you want after a couple car rides.

-If you have a car like mine with stock speakers, replace them, you won't get the most out of this radio otherwise. Even a cheap $29 pair is better than what they put in my car!

All in all, this is a great buy.

Awesome Value for the Money

I dont useualy write reviews for things I buy, but I found the other comments left here to be true upon installing this unit in my Volvo. This unit has some features that are unique to any othe indash cd I've owned. Mainly the volume knob works a little differently. On this unit, turning the knob one click at a time, will change volume 1 step at a time, but moving the knob quickly just 1/4 turn, you can lower the volume from full to almost none. Having not experienced this feature before, I find that I really like it. Of all of the units I looked at in stores and catalogs, my main concern was haveing tone control beyond preset EQ settings(i.e. pop,rock,vocal,rap...) I wanted bass and treble control. This unit has them plus mid as well. I dont use the poweramp in the unit. I have mine wired to an amp. There is a setting called 'sub out', that when not being used to control the output to a sub through the low pass filter, it controls the output level of the RCA outputs. This setting acts a little different than volume, as it lets you vary the strength of the input signal your amp receives. This helps when I switch from a professionaly recorded comercial cd to a cd of an audience recording of a live show. By varying the strength of the input signal to my amp, I can always optimise the signal strengh for clarity, volume and full sound. It keeps things with a low recorded volume from sounding thin and allows you to crank them up just as loud as the profesionaly recorded stuff. Overall the unit is solid, simple, nice looking and sounds great. I bought mine durring a free shipping offer, so I got the unit shipped to my door with a crutchfield instal. guide for $79.99. A+

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

BOTTOM LINE: If your looking for decent sounds on a budget, here it is. If your a purist, move on.

UPSIDE: This stereo is everything I needed for my Jeep Wrangler and the instructions from Crutchfield were, for the most part, dead on. Nonetheless, it was an easy pull-out and install, taking only about 30 minutes total. All the included (FREE)connectors were exactly right for my vehicle. Sound is a great improvement over stock stereo system and the receiver does a great job of tuning with features like LOCAL and automatic station assignment. The CD player has all the features I need and plays my home made CD's very well.

DOWNSIDE: The equalizer works well, but some of the presets seem a bit heavy on the bass side (I'm not really a fan of the "thumper", though). The instructions were pretty good, but a bit confusing in some areas. I also don't like the fact that the stereo face plate pushes in slightly when pressing buttons on the left side. It seems like the face plate latch isn't quite to spec. However, it does stay on and I've had no problems with it otherwise.

BLATANT CRUTCHFIELD PROMOTION: Gotta hand it to you folks; I am impressed. I recently re-discovered you online and gave you a try. Smooth transaction, quality product, excellent and FAST shipping! Keep it up, I'll be back!

This radio is great, it took less than an hour to install in a 1994 520i BMW, fits like a glove and sounds a lot better then the factory system. Best thing is that we have serveal different types of portable MP3 players in the family, and it only takes a second to plug them into the AUX plug on the front face.

I purchased the cdc-x304 to replace my factory unit in my "98" Izuzu Rodeo mainly to play my Ipod,(wife has to use a FM transmitter or tape to play hers in our other car.) With the front AUX you can not go wrong. Installation took all of 20 min from start to finish.
The sound is incredable, would recomend this unit to anybody looking to upgrade.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I was a little hesistant about installing a car radio since I know absolutely nothing about it...Without getting into too much detail, the things I will remember most about the process were the following:

1- I called Crutchfield support a couple times because I was scared I was doing the wrong thing although the directions clearly show you the right thing...Everytime I called, somebody answered within 60 was unbelievable...

2- This radio sounds amazing. I never knew the actual radio made the difference...I thought it was the 1989 camry factory radio was a piece of garbage and that hunker came out and this baby went in....

3- I've been using my iPod nano with this radio daily...I couldn't be happier b/c all i have to do is hook up a stereo mini RIGHT TO THE ipod and connect the other RIGHT TO THE AIWA and I have perfect sounding music (no wireless garbage or having to deal with tape converters)

4- This website and the tech support were so solid that, although it doesn't happen often, if I have any more car audio needs, I wouldn't even think about going somewhere else....there's no reason.

another $900 dollar taste w/ $100 budget.

Written By Jason, Blairsville,ga on Wednesday, October 26, 2005

I've had my head unit for 2 days now and i couldn't be happier with the purchase, easy install took all of 20mins to get it in and operational, I have a 2005 neon and i thought the factory head unit was ok until i put this one in, i almost blew my speakers when i turned it on for the 1st time, but that is due to the volume control (kinda touchy)but other than that i would recommend this to anyone that is looking for a descent head unit but doesn't want to take a loan out to afford it.

Great Value

Written By Joe, Providence, RI on Thursday, October 20, 2005

I've got $900 taste and a $100 budget. I've had the Aiwa for two weeks now and I love it. Just took a 7 hour road trip and used my Ipod with the AUX input - great feature! I had CD's too; the AUX input made it easy to switch between CD's, the Radio, and the Ipod, and saved me the expense of an FM Transmitter or other adapter.

Most important, the sound is great, especially considering its only a $80 unit! I've got 6 1/2" Blaupunkt speakers all around in my '90 Civic, and am just using the Aiwa's internal amp. I was pleasantly surprised at how much volume (without distortion) I can get out of this very basic system - about $200 all together.

Other features I like, that seem basic but are missing on so many of today's head units:
-Beep when you turn off the ignition to remind you to take off the faceplate
-EQ Presets that actually sound good
-Full BASS/MID/HIGH control

My only complaint is that the Volume control knob's logic has an unnatural feel - each "click" changes the volume by one level - and the volume change doesn't happen instantly. So when you mean to just turn it down a little, you mute it by mistake, or when you mean to turn it UP just a little, you almost blow your speakers - could be nasty if you were using external amps!

But overall, this unit is DEFINITELY a great buy.

The detachable faceplate is great for anti-theft and I liked this product so much I transferred it to my new car after I sold my previous one.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This is a great unit for the price. My wife and I needed to replace a Pioneer in her 98 Subaru Forester that had a bad on/off switch. We wanted something that was not too expensive and that had quality sound. Delivery was fast and the instructions from Crutchfield were concise and easy to understand. The unit installed without a hitch and both of us are amazed at the sound quality. I was thinking about replacing the speakers in her car; however, now I found out that it was just the old unit as they sound just great. Her comment to me after I installed it? "Wow, honey, we should have done this a long time ago!"

A great little unit for someone who needs a basic in-dash CD player that'll provide excellent sound and some nice little extra features.

Kudos to Crutchfield and their online customer service rep who steered me to this unit. A great unit for a great price from a top-of-the-line retailer!

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The sound is very good and much better than the factory unit on my '99 CRV. Had previously upgraded the speakers to make the factory unit sound better but the Aiwa blows away the comparison. Had I known the weak link was the factory unit, I would have upgraded it sooner. Couldn't beat the price for the features. Installation went well with no problems, but not as simple as the mastersheets would lead you to believe-Dashboard clips not very easy to take apart and some of the factory wires to the other controls are very short with little slack. Otherwise, wiring harnesses make the install very easy. Thanks Crutchfield!

Fantastic Head Unit!!

This is an UNBELIEVABLE deal for the price. I got this unit to replace my factory stereo because the knobs had begun to go haywire and the sound was so so anyways. This stereo blows away the factory stereo in my '99 Civic. I didn't even realize what I was missing, and this is still with stock speakers. I can't wait to hear it when I replace the factory speakers with a good component set-up. Mids and highs are phenomenal, and bass is thumping with the High Bass feature. With the push of a button you've got all the bass you can get without a powered sub. Highly recommend this unit, can't beat it for the price.

This head unit answered all of my problems. I have an iPod and was tired of all the static that came with the FM Transmitter. It was too expensive for me to justify buying a new unit with all of the extras so my iPod would play through the unit's auxillary input. So I gave this one a shot, and I couldn't be happier. Just plug it in to the front input and hit play. The price is better than great for all the features you get, and sounds better than the Alpine stereo I had in before. I have no complaints and have already recommended this stereo to others trying to solve the iPod/mp3 player problem in the vehicle.

Great radio for an outstanding price. I love the front panel jack that allows me to plug my personal MP3 player in the unit. The only moderate priced unit that I found that has this feature!! Great Sound and a little "Quirky" on the controls, that is, trying to figure out what button does what and remembering that it does that. But nothing to tell someone to not buy it for the controls, it just takes a little practice and patience and you will get it. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND THIS UNIT!!!! A++++

Gota love it. I installed it in my 92' Toyota Camry. It was easy to install and sounds and looks great. I really like how the buttons are set up and how easy it is to change your sub settings. Best part about the whole thing is that when you change stations on your radio, you dont have to go through every station. You can make it so that you only get the stations that come in clear. Its great for your money even if it cost more then this.

All I can say is WOW! I installed this unit in my 1983 Porsche 944 along with some tweeters in the dash, 4 x 6 Pioneer 4 ways in the rear side panels. Then I used the RCA outputs as subwoofer controls and powered a pair of inexpensive 8" subwoofer tubes with a Sony XPLOD 600 watt amp and you would not believe the concert like sound! From the highs to the lows it is crisp, clean and clear. The Tech Service line was extremely helpful also as I was having trouble with the factory floating ground wiring. They knew what the problem was without hesitation and recommended running new speaker wires and within minutes the problem was solved. You have definately earned a customer for life!

The Aiwa CDC-X304 is totally sweet!

Written By Joseph, Phoenix, AZ on Wednesday, August 03, 2005

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

With quality speakers of a high sensitivity rating and lower RMS power requirements, the Aiwa CDC-X304 produces loud and clear audio. Stock speakers will sound better, and aftermarket speakers will sound great!

RCA outputs on the back can be configured for either subwoofer or speaker use. Subwoofer level can be controlled, plus there is a low pass filter if needed. I am using this with a 10" MTX subwoofer in a sealed enclosure, powered by a MTX Thunder 3202 200W amplifier.

The AUX input is another hard-to-find feature. My iPod Mini sounds perfect through this stereo.

The Aiwa CDC-X304 hits the sweet spot of "bang for the buck." I highly recommend!

Great Head Unit, Greater Price

Written By Eric, Pittsburgh, Pa on Friday, July 15, 2005

I purchased the Aiwa CDC-X304 about three weeks ago. I was looking for an easy solution to listen to my mp3 player without fm transmitters/cassette adaptors. The audio in port, on the front of the unit, was it's selling point. I did not have to route wire or modify my dashboard to have mp3's piped through the system. On top of this, as an added bonus, it's sound blew away the oem receiver. This unit is head and shoulders above the factory unit. I really don't think that I am missing much compared to if I had bought a more costly unit. With the vast installation information provided by Crutchfield, installation was a snap. I would recommend this head unit to anyone looking to upgrade the factory unit.
So far, I have no complaints or dislikes of this unit.
I just purchased the Pioneer TS-G1340R speakers to replace the factory speakers. I am definitely sure that this will only make purchase of this head unit even better. Buy often.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Just installed this unit about 4 weeks ago in my 93 4Runner. I've been very happy with it, especially considering the price. Plenty loud enough to mask the wheezes of a 12 year old truck, and sounds good even through aged factory speakers. The CD player is stable off-road and, while the display is perhaps a bit busy, the external AUX input is great for when I can steal my wife's iPod. Crutchfield service was its usual high standard, the harness was spot on and they weren't to know about the following problem. Installation wasn't quite a cakewalk since the stock radio had for some reason (originally a package deal upgrade maybe?) the largest pair of the four rear speakers hooked into the power antenna. Since the CDC-X304 depowers that circuit unless the tuner is on, when I first hooked it up I was confused to hear great sound off the radio but crappy sound off a CD (when the antenna went down). The solution I used, in case any of you out there have a similar problem, was to hook the power antenna to the supply for powering an external amp. I don't have an amp (and don't want one) and since that circuit is powered while the receiver is on regardless of mode the antenna just stays up and the sound is fine. Turn it off and the atenna comes down as normal. Moral: always hook up the stereo and check thoroughly BEFORE putting the dashboard back together!

I like the rotary volume control, it's a lot easier to use than the push up/down especially while driving. The 7 pre-set Eq modes are fantastic! or I can manually adjust the bass, mid, and treble with the 3 band EQ. My wife loves the unit so much she is now driving the car and I inherited her 93 Camry which currently has a Kenwood unit in it (also bought from Crutchfield) but now I told my kids that the Aiwa is on sale and I want one for Father's day so I can have the same sound and features that I like in the 93.

So far, so good

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I wore out my old Panasonic cassette stereo using the tape adaptor with my Sirius tuner and have been looking for something with comparatively high-power and AUX input to replace it with. The Aiwa fills the bill very nicely (and the AUX IN jack is on the front panel!)

I'm not a big fan of animated displays and am glad that the Aiwa has a setting that turns them off. Same goes for the ''beep'' tones.

Basically, I was looking for an in-dash power amp for my satellite radio and I've found it.

Poor durability

Written By Bobby, Columbia, SC on Monday, March 28, 2005

I've had this receiver for about 5 months now, and about 2 weeks ago it started having some very annoying problems. The buttons on the face work with random results, especially the power and the source button will often have reversed functions. The volume knob would turn the volume up or down randomely no matter which way you turn it. Resetting the player fixes those problems temporarily, but all the settings and tuner presets are lost this way. I've had to reset it 3 times for the past 2 weeks.

If these problems hadn't occurred I would recommend this player whole heartedly. The sound is strong and clean, the unit is quite attractive (to me at least), and the feature I like the most is the front aux input. I am not a big mp3 person, but I use it to hook up my cell phone to it with a simple adapter found at radio shack. The cheapest, best possible speaker phone you could wish for.

I also wish there was direct track access via the number buttons. Unfortunately those only work with the radio presets, and are completely useless while the CD is in use.

Drive S: The Drive S chassis platform is designed to resist the harsh environment of a vehicle and produce a superior signal-to-noise ratio, giving you clearer, more accurate sound.

DSSA: You can adjust the sound stage and tone balance to best serve a particular seat in the vehicle using the Driver's Sound Stage Adjustment (DSSA). The DSSA control is preset for the front left or front right seat. Once you have chosen a particular seat setting, you can further manually adjust the balance and fader settings.

Front Panel Aux Input: The CDC-X304 features a 1/8" stereo minijack on the front panel to allow you to connect a portable cassette, MiniDisc, or MP3 player. The volume of the connected auxiliary source unit can be controlled by the receiver.

Switchable Rear Preouts: This unit has one pair of preamp outputs that can be switched between "Rear" and "Subwoofer." When the preouts are switched to "Subwoofer" they are not affected by the fader control, plus you can independently select the cutoff frequency of the low-pass filter (78Hz, 125Hz, or Off), and adjust the volume of the subwoofer (+10 to -10 and Attenuate).

H-Bass: Instead of a loudness control, this unit is equipped with an H-Bass function. Conventional bass boost circuits also affect the mid-bass and midrange, resulting in a muddy, "boomy" sound. H-Bass provides true deep bass enhancement for a dynamic bottom end that does not destroy the clarity of vocals and other mid-frequency content. H-Bass enhancement can be switched on or off, and does not affect the preamp output signal when it is switched to "Sub."

Equalizer: The receiver has 7 preset equalizer curves for different music types: Hip-Hop, Vocal, Club, Jazz, Pops, Rock, and Custom. Once you have selected a preset EQ curve, you can further adjust the low (60Hz), mid (1kHz), and high (10kHz) bands from -10 dB to +10 dB.

Source Level Adjuster: The relative level of each source (FM/AM/CD/AUX) may be adjusted, from -6 dB to +6 dB in 1 dB steps, and the setting will be retained in memory. The level of each source can be set so there won't be drastic leaps in volume when changing from one source to another.

Dimmer: You can lower the brightness of the display and button illumination by switching on the dimmer in the menu. The dimmer function is controlled manually, and is not affected by the vehicle's headlight circuit.

Display Illumination/Clock Display: Pressing the Off button once will turn off audio output, but the clock display and face/button illumination remain on. This makes the clock display and face/button illumination "Keyed" instead of "Unit On" only. To turn the unit off completely, you must press the Off button for two seconds.

Note: When installing in a vehicle without an accessory power wire at the radio location, you must turn the radio completely off (this defeats keyed operation), or you may wire the accessory power wire of this radio to an alternate source of accessory power to retain keyed clock and face/button illumination operation.
