Features

Overview: The audio-technica AT-PEQ3 is a low-noise, high-gain pre-amplifier designed specifically for use with turntables with magnetic cartridges. The AT-PEQ3 Photo Preamplifier converts a turntable (phono-level) signal to an RIAA-equalized line-level signal for input to an audio mixer, computer, integrated amplifier, power speakers, recording units or other line-level devices.

RIAA Filter: This RIAA preamp is a device that alters the signal from a turntable by applying an equalization curve and boosting the signal. When a record is cut, the low frequencies are reduced and high frequencies are boosted; on playback the opposite occurs (low frequencies are boosted and high frequencies are reduced). The RIAA filter in the AT-PEQ3 provides both the playback equalization and the signal amplification needed for line-level devices.

Connections: The audio-technica pre-amplifier allows you to connect a turntable to a receiver or amplifier that does not have a phono input. It raises the output of the turntable to a level of 150mV RMS, allowing it to be connected to an Auxiliary or Line Input. The AT-PEQ3 features a gold-plated stereo RCA input as well as a gold-plated stereo RCA output and comes supplied with a 40" stereo audio RCA cable.

Power Supply: The audio technica AT-PEQ3 operates off of standard household AC current using the supplied AC adapter. When the AC adapter is inserted into an electrical outlet (AC 120V) the unit's LED indicator will illuminate Red.

Specifications:

  • Rated Input: 2.5mV (1kHz), max 60 mV
  • Rated Output: 150 mV (1 kHz)

  • Signal-To-Noise Ratio: 80 dB (JIS-A)

Adio Technica AT PEQ3

Written By P.SMITH, MARQUETTE HIGHTS, IL on Friday, January 24, 2014

WELL I PICKED UP THIS LITTLE JEWEL IN CASE I SHOULD NEED IT WHILE MY LINN LK1 NEEDED TO GO IN AND IT DID. SO BOTH MY MK1 AND MK11 BOTH HAD TO GO IN GO UPDATES SO I HAD A ONKYO TX-NR515 AND MY AT PEQ3 TO GO WITH MY LP12. IT SOUNDED LIKE HEAVEN. ID BEEN SUCH AN AUDIO SNOB I FORGOT THERE IS GREAT STUFF OUT THERE AT THIS PRICE POINT. THIS LITTLE PRE AMP BROUGHT MUSIC TO LIFE WITHIN MINUTS OF SET UP. IT IS SO QUIET, AND YET VERRY MUSICAL. THIS THING IS ON MY TURNTABLE FOR GOOD. I WILL USE MY MK1 FOR BACK UP. thanks audio technica

Pros: CLEAR, POWERFUL SOUND, LOVE THE DETAILS.

Cons: NA

Not such great sound after all

Written By Steve, Austin TX on Friday, February 19, 2010

I purchased this unit because it was inexpensive and I wanted a backup in case my PAS3X phono section needed to be taken down for repairs. I did a direct listening comparison between the PAS phono section and the ATPEQ3. The comparison is not even close. There is no way that the Audio-Technica can be considered a high end phono section.

When I first got it, it was cold and dull sounding, with a flat and inadequate sound stage. I have allowed it to warm up for 24 hours and cannot perceive any change at all in the sound quality. Granted, the system I have is at a much higher level than average, but I can't see this preamp being any improvement at all on any reasonably good, built-in phono section. Perhaps if the phone section in a preamp were really junk, it might be a good idea to buy this.

It is well made and appears to be sturdy. It worked right out of the box, which is why I am giving it two stars. However, the sound is so disappointing that I must warn off any purchasers who think that they are getting any upgrade from any built-in phono section. Of course, if you have no phono section in your receiver or preamp and want to play records, the AT unit is fine for general, non-critical listening; that is, it doesn't hum, is of good build quality and appears to be perfectly serviceable. It just doesn't sound all that good. Fair warning.

Highly recommend this product

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I purchased a Denon AVR1909 and it did not have a preamp for my turntable. I purchased this preamp and connected to my receiver and turntable and it couldn't have been easier to connect and start using. The sound is now back to what I expected and I couldn't have been happier. I can now listen to all the records I have purchased over the years. I highly recommend this product.

Audio-Technica AT-PEQ3

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

When I replaced my old reciever/amplifier the new one did not have a phonographic pre-amplifier. The Audio-Technica AT-PEQ3 made up for this omission and allows me to play my vinyl records through my sterio system. It also allowed me (with additional hardware and software) to transfer songs to CD format for use on more modern systems. I am entirely satisfied with the performance.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I added my old turn table to my new receiver with the pre-amp.
The sound quality brought my records back to life. The only problem I had was the end cover was insulated from the case by paint. This cause the ground stud to be ineffective and caused hum to come out of my speakers. I moved my turn table ground wire to the end cap screw and the problem went away. I would recommend this product to a friend.

Audio Technica Phono Preamplifier

Written By Barry, Ridgecrest, CA on Wednesday, September 10, 2008

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I had relocated my turntable to a different room than my stereo amplifier. Therefore, I was looking for a reputable brand phono pre-amp so I could convert my music collection from vinyl to CD. The Audio Technica pre-amp filled the bill perfectly and has performed flawlessly since I've been using it. I would highly recommend this product to anyone looking to fulfill a similar requirement.
