Our take on the TEAC Reference Series AG-H380

by Marshall Chase
TEAC

The sound solution for the less-is-more movement

On one hand, you want something that sounds much better than an iPod® or Bluetooth® speaker. On the other hand, you want something less complex than a surround sound system. You'll find your sweet spot in a stereo receiver. In addition to being easy to set up and use, many now offer Internet radio and other network music options. Add your music source and two speakers, and you're ready to relax and enjoy your tunes. You might even connect your TV for improved sound with movies and shows.

When you've devoted time to building a music collection, versatility is key. The TEAC AG-H380 compact receiver easily connects to your CD player, turntable, tape deck, and more. And with TEAC's solid reputation for great build and sound quality, you can expect years of enjoyment.

Great digital playback...
Connect your iPod® to the 'H380's USB port for direct digital playback. The signal bypasses the iPod's made-for-earbuds audio circuitry in favor of TEAC's hi-fi processor for a difference you can hear. The 'H380 also provides control of the iPod using the included remote. And the song or file information from your player or thumb drive appears on the 'H380 display.

...and great digital recording
Here's a very cool feature. You can record directly onto a USB thumb drive from your turntable, CD player, radio or other source. You can even set the internal timer to record programs from the radio for later listening. All recording is done in the MP3 format so you will fit hours and hours of your favorites on a single drive.

What we heard
A demo of the 'H380 in our acoustically challenging training room proved this receiver to be an accomplished performer. We found its handling of digital music files to be polished and sharp, whether from a thumb drive or iPod®. The amplifier worked impressively with a pair of PSB Image B5 speakers. We were particularly delighted with the level of bass control that gave us a great listening experience with or without a sub attached.

From the review TEAC AG-H380 and PSB Image B5 speakers — small system, big sound
"In the short time that I had the TEAC AG-H380 system at home, my family and I came to truly love having it in the living room. Its small size, unobtrusive good looks, and surprising sound quality won my wife over immediately. While I have no doubt that the AG-H380 could play well with other small, reasonably efficient speakers (and I know that the B5s sound fantastic with other receivers), the combination of these two together achieves such a synergy, that it almost seems as if they were made to go together."

If this doesn't work, you may need to revert to the older software version or wait until an newer software update is available.

MP3/WMA: Instead of an iPod, a USB memory device containing MP3 or WMA files can by connected to the rear panel USB port. Compatible devices include USB flash drives, MP3 players (no specific compatibility information available), and USB hard drives (formatted Fat 16 or Fat 32 only, not NTFS). Like an iPod, the USB device is controlled by the receiver and text information or elapsed time appears on the display. The USB input is compatible with MP3 files up to 320 kbps and WMA files up to 192 kbps and will recognize up to 2,000 files on the drive.

USB Recording: Audio can be recorded on a connected USB device from the tuner or a source component connected to the Aux, CD, or Phono input.

Record Out: The Aux 1 input has a corresponding output (stereo RCA) for connecting a recording component; cassette deck, CD recorder, etc.

Sleep Timer: The sleep timer turns the unit off after a delay of 10 to 90 minutes (adjustable in 10 minute increments).

Timer: The AG-H380 has a built-in clock and daily timer, so it can be used as an alarm clock. The timer can also be used to record to a connected USB memory device.

Dimmer: The display has three brightness settings; Bright, Dim, and Off.

Sound is Bland

Written By G.T., Savannah, GA on Tuesday, January 07, 2014

I purchased this to use with my desktop and it makes me wish I stuck with the Onkyo Intec series. It just lacks detail and has an annoying ground noise hum that I can't get rid of.
Pros:
Looks great .
Cons:
Lacks support for FLAC files. Sounds really mediocre. Ground noise.

compact size with power and sound

Written By HOPEA, LEESBURG FL on Monday, September 23, 2013

I NEEDED A COMPACT SIZE WITH MORE POWER THAN 15X2. PAIRED this with Teac LSH 265speakers, teac cd player and a Yamaha sub and the sound is powerful enough and smooth with the tone feature on the receiver.Have Not had issues with hand powering from the unit and the remote is solid. A lot of features and have tried them all but the ipod. You can tuck this receiver anywhere and the sound isgreat. Thisis a great add to orupgrade receiver and would buy it again.
Pros:
small size, solid unit and remote, full sound a lot of features and very user friendly. Good buy
Cons:
none

TEAC ag-h380

Written By ap, mdi, maine on Tuesday, July 23, 2013
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

like this unit well and think it sounds great. operation is generally simple and straight-forward, a few small details that i wish were different: standby mode is only accessible via the remote; if you try to power down from the unit itself, clock gets reset. also, the usb access to an iphone 4s is a little wonky and unstable, and awkward to navigate. also, i was hoping for either co-ax or optical digital inputs. with a pair of polk audio tsi-200's, it fills up a 20'x24' space, no problem. crutchfield's online sales arrangement was simple and straight forward, and my gear arrived in remarkably short order. i will not hesitate to buy from them again.
Pros:
great sound, good price, my turntable never sounded better. remote and user interface stuff generally simple and intuitive
Cons:
sub-optimal ipod menu access turning off power at the unit erases all clock and timer settings. no co-ax or optical in / out

High quality if a little light on features

Written By Jake W., New York, NY on Thursday, September 22, 2011
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I needed a receiver that would fit in a space not designed for audio equipment. For the money you can get much more in a full-size receiver but, for what it does, the AG-H380 is great.

The build is solid (even the remote). The sound quality seems fine (I don't have enough listening experience with other receivers to give a detailed comparison), though it would be hard to put it through its paces since it's a little light on power to drive high-end floorstanding speakers. I have quality bookshelf speakers connected to mine and I am happy with the performance. I do get a slight hiss from the speakers which is audible from about two feet away. The subwoofer output is a nice feature, but TEAC customer support was unable to tell me if there's a crossover point, and the receiver is not aware of whether a sub is connected or not (so you cannot tell it to reduce the load on the main speakers). Also there are three sets of RCA inputs (plus the phono input). This is more than most similar models.

It's confusing that while the whole unit seems geared toward iPod/USB listening, the USB port is on the back. I bought an extension cable to bring the USB port around front.

Also you need the remote control to do a soft power on/off. The power switch on the unit is a hard switch and if you turn it off you lose the time setting. (Don't lose the remote!)

Despite these quirks, this is a good niche product and if you need a compact receiver, it's definitely worth your consideration.

Great little performer

Written By ToddT, New York, NY on Thursday, February 03, 2011
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I bought the Teac AG-H380 to replace an 20+ yr-old NAD receiver. I live in an apt., and I'm only driving a pair of Atoms, so don't need a lot of wattage, and of course space is always an issue. When I found this unit, I was thrilled... it had everything I wanted and needed, particularly a phono input (which is getting harder to find out there) for my large LP collection, and a subwoofer out. Then to find that I could plug in my IPod directly via the USB input sealed the deal.

I love the clean, no-fuss look of the unit, and the functionality is really easy to learn and use. Having a remote to control the volume and tuning from across the room is a revelation as well. The one thing I miss is a loudness button, since I frequently keep my music on in the background, but it's not a huge loss. Not for those with big power requirements I guess, but for my needs it's more than enough, and I feel like I've finally entered the 21st century in stereo technology.
