Our take on the TEAC A-H01

by Woody Sherman
TEAC

Everything you always wanted in a stereo receiver, except the radio

An integrated amplifier is essentially a receiver without a built-in AM/FM tuner. You get power to drive your speakers, audio controls, and inputs for music source components. Connect an iPod, a computer, a network music player, or any other device that can play Internet radio, and you may find you have no need for an AM/FM radio.

Big sound from a small footprint

TEAC's A-H01 stereo integrated amplifier is proof that full-sized sound doesn't always require a full-sized component. In fact, they've found a way to combine the essentials for great music reproduction in a slimline, small-footprint form that will look great in your dorm room or apartment.

High-resolution audio-ready

Versatile digital music handling from a built-in Burr-Brown digital-to-analog converter (DAC) that supports high-resolution sampling rates up to 192kHz/32-bit. Hook up your Mac or PC to the asynchronous USB input, and you're off and running with your audiophile FLAC, Apple® lossless, and WAV files. The TEAC website has all the drivers you'll need available online. And websites like HDTracks offer a wide selection of downloadable music in high-res formats. The A-H01's cool-running Class D amplifier section generates 22 watts of unflappable RMS power per channel.

The TEAC A-H01 has the connections you'll need to get great sound from your digital and analog sources.

The TEAC A-H01 has the connections you'll need to get great sound from your digital and analog sources.

The ins and outs

The 'A-H01 features five inputs: the aforementioned USB, two digital inputs (1 coax, 1 optical), and two stereo analog RCA inputs. Add some extra punch to your system's sound by taking advantage of the dedicated subwoofer preamp output. Or, keep your listening immersive and private by plugging in to the headphone output on the front panel.

Features

Integrated Amplifier w/ USB Streaming: TEAC's A-H01 combines a high-quality D/A converter with a stereo amplifier to create a compact audio system for your home or office. Five inputs are available; two analog and three digital. The Burr Brown digital-to-analog converter supports high-resolution sample rates up to 192kHz/32-bit. The USB 2.0 input can be used with your Mac or Windows computer for audiophile-grade music playback of your music library.

Compact High-Performance/High-Output Amp: The TEAC A-H01 employs a B&O ICE power stereo amplifier providing 30 watts x 2 channel at 1kHz in 8 ohms (or 60 watts x 2 channel at 1kHz in 4 ohms). This highly efficient amplifier design offers high output, low power consumption, and compact dimensions.

Burr-Brown PCM5102 DAC: The TEAC A-H01 integrated amp uses a Burr Brown PCM5102 DAC for high performance and support of a wide range of digital audio sources. Its three digital inputs (optical/coaxial/USB) support sampling rates of 32, 44.1, 48, 88.2, 96, 176.4, and 19kHz. 16- and 24-bit rates are supported. It's ideal for playback of FLAC, WAV, Apple Lossless and other high-res file formats.

USB Type-B Port for Computer Audio Streaming: The TEAC A-H01 features a USB (type-B) port for connecting your Windows PC or Mac computer. The A-H01 accepts digital audio source material stored on your computer at up to 24-bit/192kHz. The A-H01 also supports USB asynchronous mode, which uses its precise internal clock to control timing and eliminate jitter issues. This allows optimal playback of high-resolution digital audio files from playlists/libraries in your iTunes, Windows Media Player, or similar playback programs on your computer. This unit does not offer control over your computer's music files.

Note: Before using the A-H01 with your computer, you will need to download and install the dedicate TEAC driver on your Windows PC or MAC. Supported operating systems included Windows (XP*/Vista/7/8) and Mac OS X (Snow Leopard/Lion/Mountain Lion). *Windows XP Professional x64 Edition is not supported.

Analog & Digital Inputs: The TEAC A-H01 integrated amp features both analog and digital audio inputs.

  • Dual RCA Inputs: The A-H01 offers two stereo RCA inputs (Line 1 & Line 2) for connection of your external analog audio sources.
  • Optical & Coaxial Digital Inputs: The TEAC A-H01 is fitted with optical (toslink) and coaxial (RCA) digital inputs for connection of other digital audio sources like your CD, DVD, or Blu-ray player. These digital inputs will accept two channel linear PCM (not Dolby Digital/DTS).

Binding Post Speaker Terminals: The TEAC A-H01 integrated amp features four heavy-duty, gold plated binding post terminals to connect a single pair of speakers between 4-8 ohms. The binding post terminals will accept bar wire (up to 8AWG), spade lugs, pin-connectors, and banana plugs (single or dual).

Subwoofer Output: The TEAC A-H01 is fitted with a mono subwoofer RCA output to connect a powered sub for extra bass.

1/4" Headphone Jack: A front-panel 1/4" headphone jack lets you enjoy audio late at night, in spaces with neighbors close by, or other situations where loudspeaker playback might disturb others.

Aluminum Front-Panel: The A-H01 incorporates an aluminum front panel and motor-driven volume knob.

Remote Control:  The TEAC A-H01 comes with an IR remote control for wireless operation of the integrated amplifier. You can choose sources, control volume, and select menu functions from the remote.

Fan-Less Design: To achieve both goals of high performance and compact dimensions, two parameters that conflict with efficient heat dissipation (circuit design and chassis design) emphasized the selection and effective placement of potential heat-generating components to allow this high-performance compact amplifier to operate without cooling fans.

Great little but powerful amplifier

Written By Pacomo, St. Petersburg, FL on Monday, June 02, 2014
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I bought this amp to listen to music while working on my Apple computer. I connected via the USB port and I use JRiver to play music. The system is paired with 2 Polk Audio TSi 100 speakers. The setup was straight forward and the driver installation painless. Everything worked at the first try. The sound is clear and balance with the right level of bass (for my taste). The price is right. I really recommend this amp.
Pros:
Price. Easy to set up. Quality sound. Great DAC.
Cons:
None.

Nice product with some quirks

Written By Jon H., Chicago, IL on Friday, May 16, 2014
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This amp is perfect for a desktop setup. It has more than enough power for near field listening. It is powered by the well known ICEPower 50asx2 module for the amp section. What this means to the end user is great sound quality with low power consumption and little heat. I have mostly using it with the analog input fed by another USB dac, and I've been very pleased with the sound. The drivers supplied by Teac do appear to work fine on my Mac mini. I have yet to try it with WIndows. The USB input is flaky under Linux, but I wasn't anticipating it to work, so there is no reasonable way I can complain about that. As other reviewers have noted, the remote is really an afterthought. It doesn't have the ability to power the unit on or off. For a desktop system, this is really not an issue, and I knew this going in. However, it would be an inconvenience for someone who wants this for a conventional stereo. I have used this with a couple of different types of speakers, the first being a set of Mission MS-50s and the second set being B&W 686s. It worked well with the Missions, but the performance with the B&Ws surprised me. Overall, I am pleased with the performance of this amp. The speaker connectors are very nice for an item at this price level.
Pros:
Nice sound. Runs cool. Low power consumption.
Cons:
Remote is somewhat useless.

Cons:

Good Product. Ok Sound

Written By M, San Diego, CA on Monday, May 05, 2014
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I use this amp with my 2012 Mac Pro and Polk LSi7 bookshelf speakers. The amp is powerful enough to drive my 4-ohm LSi7s with aplomb. With the volume at 9 o'clock, the sound already fills my small home office room. The only drawback, if we really want to find one, is that this amp does not have the presence of better amps. I had connected the same LSi7s to a $1,300 Yamaha A-S1000 a couple of years ago, and it had more detail, a fuller tridimensional soundstage, and made singers sound as if they were in the room. But that's to be expected from an amp that is three to four times the price. It was also much, much bigger and heavier that this little TEAC that fits nicely on my desk next to my monitor. Overall a great buy. If you are connecting it to your computer, remember to first install the drivers (even on Mac OS X) from the Teac web site.
Pros:
Small amp, big sound. Powerful enough to drive 4-ohm speakers
Cons:
Somewhat dull sound.

TEAC A-H01

Written By RAF, Cleveland, Oh on Saturday, May 03, 2014
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Have to agree with the fact that the remote is just too problematic. If you have this on your desktop and are looking for marvelous sound and want to manage the amplifiers functions manually it is super. But even straight on the remotes responsiveness is too sporadic.
Pros:
size and clarity
Cons:
Remote inadequate

TEAC A-H01 Integrated Amp

Written By Mikey@70, Philadelphia, PA on Sunday, April 20, 2014
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Impressed with the very compact form factor which I was looking for and the sound (as described in most reviews) is remarkable for such a small device. All-in-all, I would highly recommend this amp for someone looking for performance without the bulk.
Pros:
Small form factor, great sound.
Cons:
Limited connectivity, no remote function for ON/OFF which is quite strange.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Not a bad little unit. I use it for extra speakers out a TV using the optical out. The biggest disappointment is with the remote switch. It doesn't have a on and off function. In my application it would be very helpful.
Pros:
Small footprint, easy to use, fairly good quality for the price.
Cons:
No on and off on the remote.

Great Amp

Written By Drew, Pittsburgh, PA on Sunday, February 23, 2014
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I purchased This product because I needed a small Amp for my 2.1 Audio System. I run my TV/PS4/Turntable through this with great results. I was not looking to buy a DAC but saw it as a bonus in this AMP for the price it was on sale for. I now am a believer in good sound replication for digital files. I highly recommend this product for anyone looking to fill a small/medium room with great sound from multiple sources. Thanks for the recommendation Crutchfield.
Pros:
Small Big Sound Good DAC Plenty of Inputs
Cons:
None

Teac A-H01 USB DAC Integrated Stereo Amplifier

Written By Gary, Chillicothe, Ohio on Wednesday, January 22, 2014
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I purchased the TEAC A-H01 for the built in DAC. I needed a way to play my digital music that I converted from my records. My computer sound card (which is part of the mother board) was going bad. I didn't want to replace the tower for this. The TEAC A-H01 has all the inputs you would need. By using the USB connection I bypass the cheap DAC in the computer. I also connected a powered subwoofer to the TEAC A-H01. The Music sounds great. I control the Volume from the TEAC A-H01. You do have to download the Driver to your computer from their web site for it to work. Simple process. I would recommend this product to anyone.
Pros:
Great sound, low profile, easy to hook up and use. Can be used with several input products
Cons:
Expensive, but you get what you pay for.

I've read that when connected to a sub and when using headphones, the sub still plays, or makes some noise. Can anyone tell me if this is true? I want to primarily use this as a headphone amp, but occasionally play through speakers and sub. [ allan  May 30, 2014 ]

  • no info on that as i was using for my tv but since the remote control works poorly (if at all), the unit is back in the box and stored in the garage [ scott   Jun 03, 2014 ]
  • When I turn on the amp, begin playing music and then plug in the headphone jack, the entire system is silent - no music or low frequency bass at all. I placed my hands on the sub after turning up the volume on the amp and still nothing - the headphone jack truly closes the music circuit. [ JOHN   May 31, 2014 ]
  • I hooked up my Phase Technology sub to the A-H01 and played without headphones. Sound is wonderful! When I plugged in my headphones, the sub went silent - no noise or sound at all. Hope this helps. [ Michael   May 31, 2014 ]
  • I have not experienced this problem...using a pair AKG headphones my Martin Login powered sub woofer (dynamo 300) can't be heard which is on and paired to a pair of Ohm Walsh 2 towers....I hope this helps......james [ JAMES M   May 30, 2014 ]
  • I have only used mine through my speakers, sorry I couldn't be of more help. [ MARIANNE   May 30, 2014 ]
  • Allen: I have the TEAC A-H01 With a set of INFINITY speakers. I also have a powered INFINITY subwoofer that I purchases from Crutchfield. When I have the subwoofer on and use headphones the subwoofer is disconnected, Disconnect the head phones and the subwoofer is active again. Hope this helps. [ GARY   May 30, 2014 ]
  • I don't get any sound from the external speakers with the headphones connected. Turned it up to 11 with the phones in just to be sure, no noise at all. I'm using my PC as an audio source: connected via toslink and driving Audioengine P4s with an S8 sub. Hope this helps [ Matthew   May 30, 2014 ]
Can I use this as a preamp connected to my amplifier? I want something I can connect via usb to my Mac mini to play itunes and hd tracks [ Kevin  Mar 17, 2014 ]
5 answers
  • no, it has no "out", just the the 5 inputs [ james   Mar 19, 2014 ]
  • You should be able to. I use my TEAC A-H01 to bypass my computer sound card by usb cable. the TEAC A-H01 has a much better DAK. You should be able to connect speaker out on DAK to the input of your amplifier. You do need to download the driver to your computer or the DAK won't work. I suggest You contact TEAC to ask them for sure. Crutchfield would not let me include the web site. LOOK IT UP Hope this helps [ GARY   Mar 19, 2014 ]
  • I think you would be better served purchasing a DAC with a volume control built into it. The DAC in this unit feeds its internal amplifier. May want to look at Cambridge Audio dac. [ DAVID   Mar 18, 2014 ]
  • Hi, Kevin - The A-H01 does not have line-out or through outputs, either digital or analog, that allow you to send the LR signals to an external amp, so it is not suitable for use as you envision. The A-H01 is an integrated, all-in-one DAC/preamp/amp intended to drive speakers by itself. If you want something to connect your computer via usb I'd suggest buying a DAC and a preamp for best results, or a "digital preamp" (which will have an integral DAC) with usb, especially if you're buying and enjoying hi-res material from HD Tracks. [ SCOTT R   Mar 18, 2014 ]
  • Sorry, you can't use this as preamp. There is no preout. Unless you want to modify the system and loose warranty. However, built in amp is quite decent. Thanks, [ ABU   Mar 18, 2014 ]
