Our take on the TEAC Reference Series CR-H500NT

by Marshall Chase
TEAC

The sound solution for the less-is-more movement

On one hand, you want something that sounds much better than an iPod® or Bluetooth® speaker. On the other hand, you want something less complex than a surround sound system. You'll find your sweet spot in a stereo receiver. In addition to being easy to set up and use, many now offer Internet radio and other network music options. Add your music source and two speakers, and you're ready to relax and enjoy your tunes. You might even connect your TV for improved sound with movies and shows.

It's not just radio — it's Internet radio
At first glance, you can tell that the TEAC CR-H500NT is not a common stereo receiver.Yes, the 'H500NT has excellent standard AM and FM radio reception. But this receiver can get stations and programs from all over the world with crystal clear sound quality. Just plug in to your home network, or use the built-in Wi-FI® capability if your network is wireless, and begin the great odyssey that is Internet radio. Plus you can stream music files from your own computer.

Enjoy discs from 20 years ago, as well as tunes you downloaded 20 minutes ago
Your iPod® plugs directly into the receiver where the 'H500NT bypasses the portable player's mediocre audio circuitry and directs the digital flow straight to a Burr-Brown® chip that will have it singing a sweeter tune. You'll get similar results spinning a CD on the built-in player or plugging a thumb drive into the front USB. The 'H500NT is ready for your turntable too, as well as anything you can plug into the front or rear auxiliary input.

Press Record and listen later or take it "to go"
Put a blank thumb drive into the 'H500NT and you're ready to record from any source available to the receiver. You never have to miss a favorite radio program or webcast again. Convert vinyl and CDs to MP3 and carry your music collection in your pocket or play your mix later.

What we heard
The CR-H500NT mastered our training room. It capably drove a pair of PSB Image B5 speakers to their full potential. Its Burr-Brown digital-to-analog converter sparkled like a jewel whether it was given music files off a flash drive, an iPod® or our Wi-Fi® connected laptop. And the built-in CD player spun music to life reminding us of the true meaning of the words "high fidelity."

MP3 files up to 320 kbps and WMA files up to 192 kbps are compatible and up to 2,000 files are recognized.

USB Recording: Audio can be recorded on a connected USB device from the tuner, CD player, or a source component connected to one of the Aux or Phono inputs.

Record Out: The Aux 1 input has a corresponding output (stereo RCA) for connecting a recording component; cassette deck, CD recorder, etc.

Sleep Timer: The sleep timer turns the unit off after a delay of 10 to 90 minutes (adjustable in 10 minute increments).

You can register your favorite stations at www.wifiradio-frontier.com using a computer.

Disappointment

Written By Leah, Kentwood, MI on Wednesday, December 18, 2013
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I bought this unit about a year and a half ago, primarily to play Internet radio. For the first year or so, everything functioned beautifully. the unit sounds decent, especially with the PSB speakers I bought at the same time. But eventually, I found it more and more difficult to connect to the Internet through the unit to play radio. I am hard-wired to my modem and both my computers work just fine, hard-wired or wireless. Lately, the problem had become intolerable, so I calls Crutchfield tech support. They were nice, but fobbed me off to Teac. I called Teac and they treated me more like a pain in the neck than a customer, and never called back when they said they would. Since I am past the 'warrantee' date, I must pay for any repairs myself. I am retired and cannot afford to 'repair' the unit, so what I have is a nice integrated CD player and amplifier. Not a happy camper, me. I own equipment that is twenty years old and have never had any problems with hi-fi units after a year like this. I have no other recourse than to buy no more Teac products and to never order from Crutchfield again - there are competitors out there.
Pros:
Decent sound, compact, easy to hook up
Cons:
Internet radio function haywire after a year, too many push-button functions

Simple, multi-talented receiver

Written By 3-Pointer, Brentwood, CA on Wednesday, June 06, 2012
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This receiver can handle everything from old school (turntable) to new-age (internet radio) in one very simple, easy to understand and use compact package. Very low distortion and drives the PSB Image 5 speakers nicely.
Pros:
Compact, multipurpose, easy to use and set up.
Cons:
No balance controls. Doesn't accommodate two sets of speaker

Very Satisfied

Written By Beau G, Roswell GA on Tuesday, May 22, 2012
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

We are very satisfied with the sound and features of this receiver. It intelligently interacts with Pandora on our iPhones, which was a big reason for switching to a new system. I plan to use the USB port to rip my old phono records to a flash drive for easy transfer to computer. Haven't really explored the internet radio too much - in some ways, too many choices. The CD player sounds fine, as you would expect, and I have my five-disc changer CD hooked up to AUX1. Unfortunately, the two CD players require markedly different volume levels. I thought the internet connectivity would allow me to play Pandora on my computer and stream it through the receiver, but if that's possible I haven't figured out how to do it yet. What I don't like - every button has multiple meanings, depending on the mode the receiver's in. Having to cycle through all the inputs via a menu instead of a simple selector switch. Gray lettering on black makes it hard to read the labels. While all of these are annoying, they are also pretty much standard on all stereo equipment. Note: have had this for about a month.
Pros:
Crisp sound.. USB port. IPhone digital direct connect. Pandora hookup (via iPhone). Phono inputs (yes, I still own vinyl). Decent installation instructions.
Cons:
Menus. Gray lettering on black.

TEAC CR-H500NT is amazing

Written By douglasM, Chicago, Illinois on Wednesday, March 09, 2011

Purchased this unit recently and the sound is excellent. The features for the
money spent are really unbelievable. Build quality is very high. Stereo Internet
radio, AM/FM stereo, CD player, iPod digital direct connection to high resoultion
DAC (24/192), integrated amp, phonostage (that even rips LPs to USB Flash
memory at 128K sampling rate). Plus wired LAN and WiFi connections for
streaming Internet radio and PC audio files. I added speakers and a laptop and I
am set for life! Extremely good value!
