Our take on the TEAC Reference Series DR-H338i

by Marshall Chase
TEAC

The sound solution for the less-is-more movement

On one hand, you want something that sounds much better than an iPod® or Bluetooth® speaker. On the other hand, you want something less complex than a surround sound system. You'll find your sweet spot in a stereo receiver. In addition to being easy to set up and use, many now offer Internet radio and other network music options. Add your music source and two speakers, and you're ready to relax and enjoy your tunes. You might even connect your TV for improved sound with movies and shows.

The dimensions of TEAC's DR-H338i may be small, but don't let them fool you. This micro system packs a big-boy wallop. While 50 watts per channel may seem modest compared to some traditional home theater systems, these 50 watts are backed by a toroidal power transformer that most systems twice the size don't have. And with a half-size footprint you won't have to give up much shelf space to enjoy awesome sound with your favorite movies and music.

Great versatility in a little package
The 'H338i's capabilities aren't limited to sound. It not only plays DVDs, but it upconverts the video to 1080p and sends it out through the HDMI output. With Dolby® Virtual Speaker processing, add two speakers and a powered sub and you've got home theater. Play your favorites on CD, plug in a thumb drive, connect any player with a mini-jack, and of course, run your iPod® with the included dock. Sure, the TEAC 'H338i is compact and ideal for apartments, dorm rooms, and bedrooms. But it's a terrific main system for anyone who wants heart pumping sound not hulking hardware.

Specifications

Features

DVD Player: The DVD player is compatible with 12cm and 8cm DVD, DVD-R, DVD-RW, CD, CD-R, CD-RW, Video CD, and SVCD discs, including MP3, WMA, JPEG, and DivX files.

HDMI Output: The resolution from the HDMI output is scalable; options include 480p, 720p, 1080i, and 1080p (60 Hz).

Note: Because the DR-H338i is also compatible with the PAL color system, and therefore might be used with components from other parts of the world, the HDMI resolution can also be scaled to 576p, 720p (50 Hz), 1080i (50 Hz), and 1080p (50 Hz). Keep in mind the DVD player will only play region 1 DVDs.

Component Video: The component video output can be set to progressive or interlaced. When the HDMI output is used, there is no component video output.

TV Display: The aspect ratio is adjustable to match the connected TV; 4:3 Pan & Scan, 4:3 Letter Box, and 16:9.

Audio Sync: If needed the audio signal can be manually delayed to synchronize with the video signal; adjust from 0-200ms. This delay is only available for disc and USB sources.

3D Processing: The built-in processor offers several 2-channel (or 2.1-channel) sound effects for digital sources (disc and USB):

  • Concert
  • Living Room
  • Hall
  • Bathroom
  • Cave
  • Arena
  • Church
  • Off

Dolby Virtual Speaker (DVS): DVS simulates a 5.1-channel using the DR-H338i's two speaker outputs.

Video Setting: Several video parameters can be adjusted:

  • Sharpness
  • Brightness
  • Contrast
  • Gamma
  • Hue
  • Saturation
  • Luma Delay

Zoom: Using the zoom function the size of the picture can be changed; 2x, 3x, 4x, 1/2x, 1/3x, and 1/4x. When enlarged the picture can be moved around the screen using the cursor buttons.

Night Mode: When playing a Dolby Digital encoded DVD, Night Mode lowers the dynamic range; useful when you don't want to wake the rest of the family.

Tuner: The AM/FM tuner can store up to 20 AM and 20 FM presets.

iPod Compatibility: The DR-H338i is Made for iPod compliant and includes the necessary iPod Dock. The iPod is controlled by the receiver or remote; the controls on the iPod also remain active, as does the iPod's display (there is no display on the connected TV). iPod compatibility is as follows (as of October 2010):

USB: A USB flash memory device containing MP3 or WMA audio files, JPEG photo files, or DivX video files can by connected to the front panel USB port. The flash memory should be formatted as Fat 12, Fat 16, or Fat 32 only, not NTFS. The USB device is controlled by the receiver and text information and elapsed time appears on the display. The USB input is compatible with MP3 files up to 320 kbps and WMA files up to 192 kbps and will recognize up to 300 folders and 650 files on the drive.

Record Out: The Aux 1 input has a corresponding line output (stereo RCA) for connecting a recording component; cassette deck, CD recorder, etc.

Not Good for USB Listening

Written By robert, Ventura, CA on Saturday, December 01, 2012
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

My only reason for buying this device is I have become so accustomed to using a USB flash drive in my car. My wife also got a Yamaha receiver for her work which displays the folder, compare, song etc. This device I could not even get to cycle through the folders. I want a unit for out in my garage that has some decent power and that will play a USB flash drive while I'm working on the car. I have a old Denon 3 CD changer now and it sounds fine but I am always having to change CD's. In my car I have a flash drive with 50 bands and all their songs on high quality mp3's. I can navigate through the folders and play the songs or folders I like this unit will Not allow you to do this. I would buy the Yamaha unit she has but it only has 25 watts....
Cons:
Not good for USB flash drive

Great all-in-one product

Written By Tom, San Francisco, CA on Monday, April 02, 2012
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

It's all that I had hoped for and more! Very compact, yet has it all: cd/dvd, am/fm tuner (though the AM antenna leaves a lot to be desired), hdmi, etc. Great sound from it when using Cambridge S20 bookshelf speakers. I have them hooked up to my cable box and that is a vast improvement to the tv-speakers. Highly recommended product from Teac.
Pros:
Compact, versatile, great value for price.
Cons:
Am antenna does not do the job, the remote could be a little less cluttered.

Rocks

Written By MJ Hull, Davis, CA on Thursday, March 15, 2012
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The TEAC Reference Series DR-H338i rocks. I live in very small quarters and was able to trade this for five separate components, including the DVD player and two remotes, and a LOT of extra room. The sound (combined with new, smaller Polk speakers) is better than I expected, and the simplicity of use is much appreciated.
Pros:
Compact, space-saving, simple to use, sounds great.
Cons:
None so far, unless I can't figure out how to set tone adjustments permanently. Haven't had time to look into it yet.

Teac DRH-338i

Written By Ted C, Marlton NJ on Saturday, March 03, 2012
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This receiver is the best in its class! The CD and DVD players work flawlessly. They manage to play discs that other players can't. The sound is just superb - crisp, clean and full just like it should be. The 3D sound system provides surprising spaciousness when used. The remote is easy to use , although the markings could be made a little easier to see. The compact size of this receiver allows you to place it almost anywhere. Teac has always been known for its quality in tape decks and now receivers.```
Pros:
Great sound quality.
Cons:
Difficult to read symbols on remote in low light.

Not cheap but good

Written By Carlos, The Woodlands, TX on Friday, June 10, 2011
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Nice product, easy to set up and use. Size is very convenient for a guest bedroom or secondary living area application. The included iPod dock works well and allows control by the remote. DVD player seems to be fine but I haven't tried it with my non-US-originating collection yet so not sure if it will play them. No problems with NetFlix/US-originating DVDs. Pretty expensive for what it is but in the event of insufficient space for a larger unit then this is the best option that I found.

Compact Powerhouse

Written By MichaelK, Holmes Beach, FL on Sunday, October 24, 2010
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I own two Teac DR-H300 DVD Receivers, the previous model to the DR-H 338 with identical specifications. The new DR-338i features a redesigned front panel, but lacks two important features: Blue Ray DVD and HD Radio reception. Otherwise the unit is excellent in every respect: beautiful design and, more important versatile to hook up your Ipod, laptop or play dvds with a 1080 resolution. To experience the quality of the units amplifier, you will have to hook up two powerful speakers (I use two speakers with 150/250 W rms), if possible with a sensitivity higher than 91 dB spl. You will be amazed how this micro unit will perform. Powerful dynamic sound, solid bass and superb picture quality if you connect the Teac to your flatscreen via the HDMI cable. We have Netflix and play movies online using an HP laptop. The laptop plays the movies with the video signal going via HDMI straight to the TV and the audio signal going into the AUX of the Teac. Try this and you will most likely stay at home for movie night. Bought the second unit for a different room, because I could not find a better combination between small size, performance and aesthetics.
