Our take on the Boston Acoustics A 26

by Kristen Schaub
Boston Acoustics

Why choose bookshelf speakers?

Bookshelf speakers may be small in size, but they can deliver surprisingly big sound. Some ultra-compact models even fit on a desktop. Most are right at home in tight spaces like shelves, so they're usually good choices for your home theater's rear channels. For the best performance, try placing bookshelf speakers on solid speaker stands to help the sound really "open up." If you want full bass impact, add a powered subwoofer and enjoy punchy sound that's as deeply satisfying as that of floor-standing speakers.

Looking to put the excitement back in movie night? Check out Boston's A 26 bookshelf speaker. This little dynamo boasts clear, musical sound that'll add life to your movies and music. Use a pair to create a robust stereo music system, or create a compact home theater system using a pair of A 26 speakers in both the front and rear of your room. Just add the A 225C center channel and either the ASW250 or ASW650 powered subwoofer to complete your system.

Advanced drivers deliver the Boston sound you love
The A 26 features Boston's 1" Kortec® soft dome tweeter for clear, crystalline highs. The advanced ceramic/glass fiber polymer woofer uses Boston's Deep Channel Design® to deliver more bass response per watt of amplifier power. The crossovers in all A Series speaker models incorporate low-loss capacitors and low-distortion cores for the inductors. It means you'll hear every note in your music with minimum distortion.

Thoughtful cabinet design
This speaker's cabinet design also features vertical and horizontal internal bracings to reduce unwanted resonance that can muddy the sound. Plus, as part of Boston's A Series of speakers, the A 26 features modern styling with a stunning high-gloss, scratch-resistant cabinet, a textured top panel for contrast, and a convenient magnetic grille.

Driver Technology

A-Series Bookshelf: The Boston Acoustics A-Series bookshelf loudspeaker (A 26) incorporates high-quality components that produce the legendary Boston Sound. The A-Series bookshelf loudspeaker is ideally suited for use in a high-quality multichannel home theater or stereo music system.

2-Way Speaker System: The Boston Acoustics A-Series bookshelf loudspeaker features a two-way design that employs a single 6.5" woofer paired with a single 1.0" soft-dome tweeter.

1" Kortec Soft-Dome Tweeter: The Boston Acoustic A 26 features Boston's 1" Kortec soft-dome tweeter for crystalline high frequencies.

6.5" DCD Woofer: The Boston Acoustics A 26 bookshelf loudspeaker is fitted with a single 6.5" ceramic/glass fiber polymer woofer with Deep Channel Design (DCD) that allows for higher speed, reduced distortion, and improved sensitivity. As a result the A 26 delivers more bass response from less amplifier power.

Crossover Network: The crossover components in the A 26 incorporate low-loss film capacitors and low-distortion laminated silicon steel cores for the inductors in all critical areas. The tweeter and woofer are crossed over at 2,400 Hz.

Enclosure Design

Bass Reflex Enclosure: The Boston Acoustics A-Series bookshelf loudspeaker (A 26) features a bass reflex enclosure with a rear-firing acoustically tuned port for improved low frequency response and efficiency.

Scratch Resistant, Resonance Free Cabinet: The Boston Acoustics A 26 bookshelf loudspeaker features a high-gloss, scratch-resistant cabinet with a textured top and magnetic grille for a modern styling that will match most any decor. Vertical and horizontal internal bracings reduce cabinet resonances for enhanced audio quality.

Connections

Binding Posts: Gold-plated binding posts provide hook-up flexibility and the purest signal transfer. The binding posts will accept bare wire (up to 12-gauge), pin connectors, spade connectors, and banana plugs (single only).

Note: The binding posts are spaced to far apart to accommodate dual banana plugs.

Color-Coded: The speaker's binding posts are color-coded (red/black) for easy identification between positive and negative.

Mounting Options

Rubber Feet: The Boston Acoustics A-Series bookshelf loudspeaker (A 26) includes four self-adhesive rubber feet for safe and secure placement on a table-top, shelf, or, stand, other AV furniture. The rubber feet add 0.125" of height to the bookshelf speaker.

Wall Mounting: The A 26 bookshelf loudspeaker is fitted with a single keyhole slot to wall mount the speaker to a wall stud (mounting screw not supplied). Two self-adhesive rubber bumpers are included to attach to the rear of the speaker to prevent marring of your wall.

Note: The optional PinPoint heavy duty side-grip wall-mounting bracket (121AM40B, sold separately) can also be used to wall mount the speakers.

Great Sound

Written By Greg D, New Jersey on Thursday, May 09, 2013
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

As bookshelf speakers go, I am superimpressed. I don't have the deep pockets for the high, high end stuff, but I coupled these speakers with a Definity powered subwoofer, and I love how the stereo separation is so clear, and how vocals in particular reach out into the room. They create a nice 3 dimensional field of sound. Love 'em.

A26 speaker sounds great. Using this speaker with a different Boston Acoustics speaker to have stereo when watching DVD's.
Pros:
Small size pleases my wife. I like the clear sounds. Purchased as open box item and it looks new.
Cons:
Best used in smaller room and placed on dresser with TV.

Great Speakers

Written By Bart Audio Junkie, Clarksville Tn on Monday, November 26, 2012
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I bought these as B speakers and have a set of TEIL CS2.4 as the main pair. Running it on an Onkyo AV receiver. These are great I read a lot of reviews and lab tests before making my purchase. If you look at the frequency response of bench testing at audiophile websites for these speakers you will find that they are very acurate and not colored. (also have the A25 speakers as surround speakers see my review there they are very similar but not as much base). By colored the speakers do not have any inherently brite or dull areas. The cabinets are also very ridgid and do not have any vibration or distortion from the tuned port as the Reference POLK RTiA3 rated well at Crutchfield by purchasers but not as accurate and smooth as this speaker. Boston acoustics has done an excellent job. If you want deep rich base you may need a subwoofer with these but more so with the A25"s. They have excelllent stero imaging and and are crisp clear and pleaseing to listen to for hours. I swapped them out with my THIELS and was impressed how they compared. Not as full. rich and accurate but amazing for the price.
Pros:
Excellent Speakers for the price would recommend these even as Primary Speakers with the addition of a subwoofer if you want deeper base, but these are all you need for excellent listening.
Cons:
None

Sensitive to placement, otherwise great

Written By Gary, Orange County, California on Saturday, October 13, 2012
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I bought these as 'B' speakers for my kitchen. I have Boston Acoustics VR-970's in my 'listening' room and love them so I wanted to stay with BA.

I only have one place that I really can put speakers in my kitchen and these really lit up the sheetrock wall right behind them resulting a very boomy / thumpy presentation.

I tried elevating them, plugging the ports, turning them upside-down, etc., to no avail. When I mounted them on chairs far away from my wall, they sounded excellent. But that mounting situation was far from practical. I ended up returning these (hats off to Crutchfield and their return policy!)
Pros:
Clear, good clarity, dispersion and frequency range.
Cons:
In my experience, very sensitive to placement.

Boston A26

Written By alienderivative Penook, Va, Penhook, Va on Friday, January 13, 2012
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

What the Crutchfield decription describes is exactly what I've found after listening to these speakers for many weeks. I doubt there's any competition for this speaker in its size and price range. I used it in a high end tube system and also in its permanent location in my bedroom system, being driven by a NAD C316BEE integrated amp. If you want to avoid shrill, harsh sound this speaker and a good amplifier such as the NAD will do the job nicely.
Pros:
Smooth, detailed sound with good bass weight.
Cons:
None
