Feel the room-shaking excitement of movie explosions with Boston Acoustics' ASW 650 powered subwoofer. It specially designed 10" ceramic/glass fiber polymer woofer teams up with a potent 300-watt amplifier drives for thunderous bass. And Boston's exclusive signal-monitoring circuitry keeps audible distortion at bay, so the low frequencies stay clear and accurate.

The ASW 650 also uses vertical and horizontal internal bracings to reduce unwanted resonance that can muddy the sound. Plus, as part of Boston's A Series of speakers, it features a distinctly modern style with a stunning high-gloss, scratch-resistant cabinet and a textured top panel for contrast.

Build a complete Reflection Series speaker system by pairing this sub with any combination of A 250 or A 360 floor-standing speakers, A 25 or A 26 bookshelf speakers, and the A 225C center channel speaker.

Features

A-Series Powered Subwoofer: The Boston Acoustics A-Series powered subwoofer (ASW 650) incorporates high-quality components that produce the legendary Boston Sound. The A-Series powered subwoofer is ideally suited for use in a high-quality 5.1 channel home theater or stereo music system. The powered subwoofer is capable of impressive deep bass and high output from a  compact enclosure.

Bass Trac Circuitry: The Boston Acoustics ASW 650 powered subwoofer features Bass Trac Circuitry, a proprietary Boston-designed circuit that tracks the input signal to the subwoofer and prevents its amplifier from being driven into audible distortion. As a result, the bass stays clean and strong at any listening level.

10" DCD Woofer: The Boston Acoustics ASW 650 powered subwoofer is fitted with a front-firing 10" ceramic/glass fiber polymer woofer cone with Deep Channel Design (DCD) that allows for higher speed, reduced distortion, and improved sensitivity.

650-Watt (Peak) Amp: The Boston Acoustics ASW 650 employs a built-in 300 watt RMS (650W Peak) amplifier to drive the preloaded 10" DCD woofer.

Crossover Network: The crossover components in the ASW 650 incorporate low-loss film capacitors and low-distortion laminated silicon steel cores for the inductors in all critical areas.

Bass Reflex Enclosure: The Boston Acoustics A-Series powered subwoofer (ASW 650) features a bass reflex enclosure with a front-firing acoustically tuned port for improved low frequency response and efficiency.

Scratch Resistant, Resonance Free Cabinet: The Boston Acoustics ASW 250 powered subwoofer features a high-gloss, scratch-resistant cabinet with a textured top for a modern styling that will match most any decor. Vertical and horizontal internal bracings reduce cabinet resonances for enhanced audio quality.

Placement: Place the powered subwoofer next to a wall or in a corner near your main speakers. The sound is typically best when the subwoofer is within 15' of the main speakers. The sharp 24dB/octave crossover roll-off permits placement farther from the main speakers if necessary. Since the ear is unable to localize the low frequencies of the subwoofer, the bass still appears to come from the main speakers. Experimentation is key, however most positions in the room will work well.

Controls

Volume Control: The Boston Acoustic ASW 650 features a rear-panel rotary volume control. Simply adjust the powered subwoofer's volume control until you hear a match between your main speakers and the subwoofer. Bass response should not overpower the room, but rather be adjusted so there is a natural blend across the entire musical range.

Crossover Control: When using the line-level inputs of the powered subwoofer, the ASW 650's built-in variable crossover (4-180Hz) is engaged. As a starting point, set the crossover control on the subwoofer approximately 10Hz higher than the lower limit of your main speakers' bass response. Fine-tune the crossover setting by ear for the smoothest blend with your main speakers. The best setting of the crossover control will depend on speaker placement and personal preference.

Note: This control is not active when using the LFE input jack.

Polarity Control:  The polarity control switch lets you select normal (0°) or inverted (180°) phase for the powered subwoofer. Set this switch to provide the fullest, most dynamic bass. The effect of phase will be most audible on low-frequency percussion instruments or music with a continuously repeating bass line.

On/Off Switch: The ASW 650 features a main on/off switch and 3 power settings.

  • Audio On: The powered subwoofer is always on.
  • Auto: The powered subwoofer will turn on whenever a signal is detected. If no signal is detected after several minutes, it will automatically enter the Mute mode.
  • Mute: The powered subwoofer is muted and will not produce any sound. You may turn off the main power witch, if you will not be using for some time or which to conserve electricity.

Note: Power is always supplied to the powered subwoofer's electronics unless it is unplugged or the main switch is powered off. The auto-on circuitry only activates or deactivates the power amplifier.

Connections

LFE/Line-Level Inputs: The Boston Acoustics ASW 650 powered subwoofer is fitted with LFE and Line-Level inputs for connection flexibility to your home receiver.

  • LFE: The ASW 650 powered subwoofer is equipped with a dedicated LFE input to connect a multichannel home theater AV receiver with a dedicated subwoofer channel to reproduce the special low-frequency effects (LFE) information contained in digitally-encoded soundtracks. In this case, you will use your AV receiver's built-in crossover adjustments, and not the ASW 650's crossover control
  • Line-Level: If your receiver does not have a dedicated subwoofer or LFE output, you can connect the powered subwoofer to a preamp or line-level RCA output on your receiver. In this case, you will use the crossover control on the ASW 650.

Note: There are no speaker-level connections.

AC Cord: The ASW 650 includes a 6' detachable AC power cord. The powered subwoofer's AC power cord should be plugged into an AC wall outlet or surge protector. Do not use the outlets on the back of your AV receiver.
