Our take on the Boston Acoustics CS 26

Boston's CS 26 bookshelf speaker delivers high-impact sound for your movies, music, and TV shows. You'll hear precise, crystal-clear highs thanks to this speaker's 1" soft dome tweeter. And the 6-1/2" polymer woofer brings home well-defined mids and lows.

Use a pair of CS 26s by themselves for rich, full stereo sound, or team together up to seven of these speakers with a powered subwoofer for engaging home theater sound. You can also build a complete Classic Series speaker system by combining these bookshelf speakers and a sub with floor-standing front speakers and a center channel speaker.

These speakers have an excellent sound and sound stage. They have excellent base for bookshelf speakers though you should use a powered subwoofer. Very little coloration in the music and great for home theater as well.

Great Bookself Speakers

Written by: Mark from Central Louisiana on April 1, 2011

I needed better speakers for my bedroom/computer sytem where I do most of my music listening. And I do spend much time listening to music. At $89.99 each these speakers are a steal. I listen to a very wide variety of musc, from acoustic jazz to heavy metal. These speakers allow me to hear all the details from top to bottom. The highs are quite detailed, and the bass is very good for the small size. I highly recommend these Bostons.

They sound better than you would expect

Written by: Russ from Sunny California on March 24, 2011

I have a pair of the previous model that this speaker replaced. Still, I can tell you that these speakers sound fantastic, especially for their size. From the first day I had them I was amazed at the fullness and clarity of music that came out of the these little guys They also produce a respectable amount of clean, tight bass. Now that they are broken-in, they sound even better. I also happen to have a pair of Klipsch RB-61's which cost almost 3 times as much. I prefer to listen to these Bostons over the RB-61's. The Bostons are smoother and less fatiguing. Yes, they do lack strong bass due to their size. But I gave them 5 stars because, for a bookshelf speaker at this price, they are superb.

Highly recommend this if you're looking for a great quality speaker in a small, bookshelf size. Perfect for a smallish bedroom to really add UMMPPHH to TV, videos, games and receiver outputs. I was also pleased with Crutchfield'sease of ordering and timely shipping.

Exceptional Value and Sound

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

A few years back I upgraded to a (5.1) receiver, and I purchased five of the CR67s'. At that point, I became a BA fan. I have just recently upgraded my receiver to (7.1), but was unable to find two additional CR67s'. I began by buying two CS26s'. At that point, I realized that on an ideal Home Theater setup, not only should the speakers have a matching voice coil, but also be equal in size. So, I ended up buying four more, plus a center channel speaker. The sound is fantastic, just what I expected from BA. They sound just as good at high volume levels as they do at a lower setting. The design is up to date and it came with a cloth grill as opposed to the CR67 that came with a black metal grill. I don't understand one thing. The CS26's has a key hole mounting bracket, but BA neglected to include the four, what I call spacers that are underneath that bracket to prevent your walls from becoming scratched. Another thing that I noticed, if you were to place the speaker on its side, you are unable to rotate the Boston logo on the grill. There is a slight problem with the design, it appears BA has added 3/4 of an inch to each side of these speakers creating a wider look, but also will not fit in the space where I placed my C67s'. If the additional panels non-existent, it would have been a perfect fit. Luckily, I found an alternative area for placement. I would suggest you give these speakers a try. Chances are, you won't be disappointed.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I have a pair of Boston HD7's and was always amazed at the sound that came out of these for a little bookshelf speaker. When I upgraded my A/V Receiver to a 7.1 and decided to add two more rear speakers and knew they would be Boston's. So when the price of these came down I jumped. Glad I did, these match my other Boston's perfectly. They are well built and look great. Delivery was on time and Crutchfield will definitely get my business again!

Boston Acoustics CS 26

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I got the Boston Acoustics CS26 because of the wonderful Boston Acoustics CR77 speakers I own. Since the CS26 specs seemed very close to the CR77 specs, my hope was the sound would be close too. In some way they were, but in others they weren't. I compared the CS26 to the Polk RTiA1 and my Thiel CS0.5 and CR77 speakers. I used a stereo setup to evaluate them. Out of the box the CS26 speakers had a way too red cherry vinyl exterior. I have natural cherry living room furniture. The Thiel and Polk speakers also had a natural cherry exterior. The CS26 speakers looked silly next to them. Otherwise they seemed solid. Well it really all comes down to how they sound. The CS26 highs were pretty clear and maybe a tad hot. Vocals were forward and very clear. So far, they compare well to my CR77s. Unfortunately the bass was a bit muddy, not bad, but noticeable. Compared to the Polk and Thiel speakers; they didn't have the warmth, imaging ability or clarity (though close). I really liked how lively the CS26 speakers are, but they just didn't measure up. I ended up returning them.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I was looking for a bookshelf speaker that would not sacrifice sound quality. After I had listened to other brands I chose the Boston Acoustics because of their clarity and overall sound quality. I am very satisfied with my decision and pleased with the price that I paid. Money well spent!

Excellent Value

Written by: Doug from Lebanon, MO on May 4, 2009

Replaced my 30 year old Polk Audio Model 10's with these. I auditioned a lot of speakers, including B&W's. Very smooth and clear highs, not harsh. Very good bass for the speaker size. Excellent vocals. Excellent power handling. Pushing these with 130w (Onkyoy SR806) and accompanied by an excellent sub (Velodyne DEQ-15R), I can feel like I'm at a live concert, be it rock, country, orchestra. They are excellent for home theater as well (BA CS 225 center). The classic styling really appeals to me as well.

latest BA bookshelf speakers

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This is my third set of Boston Acoustic bookshelf speakers in about 28 years. I like the natural sounding highs and lows characteristic of BA. These are an upgrade over my previous speakers and I can really appreciate the increase in the amount of air they move. The sound is noticeably bigger. I expect to get 15 plus years out of them.

Solid construction, great looks and amazing sound. Whether you're watching movies or just relaxing listening to your favorite tunes, these speakers are fantastic. Oh, and don't be fooled by their size. CS 26 can easily replace tower speakers. Boston Acoustics really know their stuff. I bought a pair from my favorite folks here on Crutchfield. And I am so glad I did. Thank you Crutchfield.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

These things pack a good punch for their size. The bass is tight and the highs are crystal clear. I've had them for about a week and have heard no distortion. Would recomend to anyone looking great sounding bookshelf speakers. I paired mine with the Boston CS Sub10 and the CS225C for 7.1 surround all running through an Onkyo TX-SR806B. I downsized from large tower speakers and I can honestly say these sound better.

Driver Technology

Tweeter: The CS 26 uses a 1" Kortec soft dome tweeter for clear high frequencies. Kortec is a silky fabric saturated on the underside with a proprietary stiffening agent. Because the inside surface of the dome is ultra stiff, the tweeter tracks the signal with ease and produces an excellent transient attack. Simultaneously, the soft, self-dampening top layer eliminates unwanted resonance, so the sound is smooth and articulate.

Woofer: The CS 26 has a 6-1/2" graphite injected polymer woofer with a phase plug. The speaker features Boston's Deep Channel Design technology to give you more bass with less amplifier power. Rubber surrounds are used for added durability. The enclosure is ported on the back panel.

MagnaGuard: The speaker features MagnaGuard magnetic shielding which ensures the speaker's magnetic field does not interfere with a CRT television's picture.

Bass Management Recommendation: When setting bass management parameters on your home theater receiver, the outputs for this speaker should be set to Small with the subwoofer's crossover point between 80 Hz and 120 Hz.

Connections

Gold-plated Binding Posts: The wire terminals are gold-plated, 5-way binding posts, allowing you to connect the speaker wire using dual banana plugs, single banana plugs, pin connectors, spade terminals, or bare wire. Bare wire up to 10 gauge fits through the binding posts.

Mounting Options

Mounting: A keyhole bracket mounted on the back of the speaker allows wall mounting without purchasing an additional bracket. When wall mounting, affix the included tall rubber feet to the back of the speaker along the bottom. The bracket holds the speaker approximately 3/8" from the wall.
