The circular DSi255 from Boston Acoustics mounts directly into your ceiling. A 5-1/4" woofer and 3/4" dome tweeter work together to deliver rich, balanced audio with wide dispersion. They're great for areas of the house where conventional speakers don't work very well, like a hallway or kitchen. The flush-mount design means the speakers virtually disappear into your ceiling. An optional in-wall bracket is recommended for installing the DSi255 in a new home under construction. Tweeters: The DSi255 features a 3/4" soft dome tweeter housed in a unique floating tweeter island. This floating island gives the tweeter a broader dispersion range to fill the listening area. Inputs: Spring loaded clips will accept pin connectors or bare wire up to 14 gauge. Paintable: Both the frames and grilles can be painted to match the ceiling or wall. Two paint shields are included to protect the speakers from being painted as well. Moisture Resistant: The DSi255 is well suited for humid environments like the kitchen or bathroom. Installation: After a 6.75" diameter cutout is made, the speaker is installed in the hole and held in place by 4 attached clamps. The only tool required (after the hole is cut) is a #2 Phillips head screwdriver to tighten the clamps. The clamps spread up to 1.240", so they should cover almost any application (most drywall is 1/2" thick). The required depth to install this speaker is 3.089". New Construction Brackets: For new construction installations, the NCBR5 bracket (item # 065NCBR5) is needed. Note: There must be 1" clearance around the mounting hole to accommodate the clamps. Good sounding speakers for background music listening, though you'll need to add a subwoofer if you want to listen critically to music. An installation note: These are held in your ceiling with plastic "wings" that swing out as you tighten the screws. Some of the screws were initially extremely tight, causing the plastic retainer to pop free (it's held in with some kind of glue.) Recommendation: Tighten, then loosen the mounting screws before installing so that you won't have the retainer pop free in the ceiling. 5 out of 5 people found this helpful Was this review helpful? They carry the sound well for their compact design and I will look more closely at Boston for speakers in the future. Was this review helpful? Yes | No 5 out of 5 Office Sound Written By Robert, Ebensburg, PA on Tuesday, April 07, 2009 Four of these speakers were installed throughout our office. The installation in the drop ceiling was quick and easy and due to the light weight of each speaker, no additional supports were required. The sound quality and dispersion over 2,500 SF is excellent. 6 out of 6 people found this helpful Was this review helpful? Yes | No 5 out of 5 Work great Written By ncaudio, Raleigh, NC on Monday, May 28, 2007 We bought these based primarily on price, since they are going in the kitchen. Installation was a breeze (partly because we had prewired the house when it was built), and they sound great (even better than the speakers in the family room). One thing we didn't think about, though... we had planned to buy bookshelf speakers for the Master Bedroom (above the kitchen), but it seems there's no need -- we can hear the music in the MBR just fine through the floor.
