Boston Acoustics

Our take on the Boston Acoustics DSi460

Get high-performance sound with deep bass response from speakers that literally disappear into your décor. The DSi460 speakers install directly into your walls, so they don't take up even a single inch of floor space. And they're carefully designed by the audio experts at Boston Acoustics to deliver that legendary "Boston Sound." You'll enjoy warm, dynamic sound with amazing depth and clarity.

The DSi460 features a 6-1/2" woofer and 1" Kortec® dome tweeter. Kortec is a multi-layered material exclusive to Boston's tweeters that allow them to deliver smooth, articulate highs without any unwanted resonance. Sold in pairs, the DSi460 is ideal for music lovers who want smooth, detailed stereo sound. An optional in-wall bracket is recommended for installing the DSi460 in a new construction.

Features

Woofers: The DSi460 uses an 6 1/2" DCD (Deep Channel Design) copolymer woofer. The DCD woofer uses a deeply grooved pole plate that enables the voice coil to travel farther for greater output without bottoming.

Tweeters: The DSi460 has a 1" Kortec soft dome tweeter. Kortec is a silky fabric saturated on the underside with a proprietary stiffening agent. Because the inside surface of the dome is ultra stiff, the tweeter tracks the signal with ease and produces an excellent transient attack. Simultaneously, the soft, self-dampening top layer eliminates unwanted resonance. So the sound is smooth and articulate.

Inputs: Spring loaded posts will accept pin connectors, single banana plugs, or bare wire up to 12 gauge.

IR Sensor Knockout: The speaker has a knockout molded into the speaker baffle that will accommodate a standard 1/2" diameter infrared sensor. The IR sensor range and operating angle will be reduced by the grille and cloth. IR will work best in on-axis to the face of the speaker. Test before installing.

Paintable: Both the frame and grill can be painted to match the ceiling or wall. Two paint shields are included to protect the speakers.

Moisture Resistant: The DSi460 is well suited for humid environments like the kitchen or bathroom.

Installation: After a 10" x 7 3/8" cutout is made (either vertically or horizontally), the speaker is installed in the hole and held in place by a rugged plastic screw-set bracket. The only tool required (after the hole is cut) is a #2 Phillips head screwdriver to tighten the clamps. The clamps spread up to 2.270", so they should cover almost any application (most drywall is 1/2" thick). The required depth to install this speaker is 3.481".

New Construction Bracket: For new construction installation, the NCB6 bracket (item # 065NCB6) is required.

Note: There must be 1 1/2" clearance around the mounting hole on the short axis to accommodate the clamps.

Will only sound good with extra work

Written By salter, PA on Wednesday, July 01, 2009

I have owned several Boston products and have always been happy with the sound and performance. These speakers do not impress me. They can not handle power due to the lack of an enclosure. I am running the speakers with a solid 85 watts RMS and they are crossed over at 80 hz. The woofers still bottom out if played at a distortion free level. Since I now have 10" x 8" holes in my wall, I am stuck with these speakers. I am sure that if I build enclusures behind the speakers, the mid bass and power handeling will be improved. The speakers do have good midrange and high end performance. It looks like I will be doing some extra work.

System Fronts (L,R)

Written By Brad - location Texas, Houston on Saturday, March 31, 2007

I grew up listening to my parents Cambridge Soundworks speakers blaring albums like AC/DC's "Back in Black" from vinyl! Call me a life long believer in Boston quality.

I use a DSi460 pair as the fronts in my 7.1 system approximately 66" off the floor and 7' apart. The sound is warm and accurate. They can certainly handle all of the ~110W per channel that my Yamaha HTR-6090 can push.

Installation was easy. Note you can mount the long sides flush against studs, joists, or stud plates - the 1-1/2" of cleareance is only required on the short sides. Do yourself a favor and install some Dynamat (brand name car audio product) behind your speakers if your wall is adjacent to another living space (ie bedroom-it's pricey however at ~$150 per 20 sq ft). This will really project the sound into the room and strongly dampen bass travel into the room where it is not desired to be heard. At as minimum take the time to install a standard insulation/sound barrier although it can be frustrating to work rolled insulation into the speaker cut out - it will be worth it.

I have been enjoying the speakers for ~one week thanks to Crutchfield's rock solid service. I have no complaints. Beware, once you try Boston Acoustics speakers you may never go back. Enjoy!
