With the DSi465, you get a pair of speakers that mount directly into your ceiling, so they don't take up an inch of floor space. And you'll enjoy that legendary Boston Sound pure, natural response with amazing clarity. The DSi465 is ideal for getting great sound in awkward areas of your home, like a hallway or kitchen. The DSi465 sports a 6-1/2" woofer for rich mids and lows, and a 1" pivoting Kortec® dome tweeter. Kortec is a multi-layered material exclusive to Boston's tweeters that allow them to deliver smooth, articulate highs without any unwanted resonance. And you can angle the tweeters toward your favorite listening spot for better, more direct sound. An optional in-ceiling bracket is recommended for installing the DSi465 in a new home under construction (or in a room that's undergoing major renovation). The DCD woofers use a deeply grooved pole plate that enables the voice coil to travel farther for greater output without bottoming. Tweeters: Each speaker has a 1" Kortec soft dome tweeter. Kortec is a silky fabric saturated on the underside with a proprietary stiffening agent. Because the inside surface of the dome is ultra stiff, the tweeter tracks the signal with ease and produces an excellent transient attack. Simultaneously, the soft, self-dampening top layer eliminates unwanted resonance. So the sound is smooth and articulate. After mounting the speaker, the tweeter "island" can be angled to best suit the speaker location. Inputs: Spring loaded posts will accept banana plugs or bare wire up to 12 gauge. Paintable: Both the frame and grill can be painted to match the ceiling or wall. A paint shield is included to protect the speaker from being painted as well. Moisture Resistant: The DSi465 is well suited for humid environments like the kitchen or bathroom. Installation: After an 8.617" diameter cutout is made, the speaker is installed in the hole and held in place by 4 attached clamps. The only tool required (after the hole is cut) is a #2 Phillips head screwdriver to tighten the clamps. The clamps spread from 0.133" to 1.323", so they should cover almost any application (most drywall is 1/2" thick). The required depth to install this speaker is 4.637". I ended up using 10" subwoofer baffles since they were installed in a ceiling with blown-in insulation. I can't believe they don't makes something specifically for this situation already, but this worked fairly well. The speakers sound great. I even tried them hooked up as the mains to my Denon receiver, and they did not distort at high levels. It's great to not have wires running on the floor for the surrounds anymore. Installing a wall plate with binding posts behind the receiver location makes it super easy to hook up. Definitely a good purchase. Was this review helpful? Yes | No 4 out of 5 Great second set of speakers Written By Jim, Corvallis, OR on Wednesday, January 28, 2009 Bought these as a second set of speakers to install in the ceiling in the kitchen to use while cooking since the stereo is not in the kitchen. ;-) I ordered them before Christmas and installed them over the holiday. Very good sound. Nice power and very clean. They actually sound better than our floor speakers in the room with the stereo. Installation was easy (except for the climbing around the attic part). The added bonus is listening to the TV while you run into the kitchen for goodies...you can still hear what's going on! I will likely buy another set of these for the garage. Crutchfield also was able to get them to me from the east coast in time for Christmas, even with all the bad weather that shut things down here in Oregon. I'll definitely buy from them again. Written By todd, west fargo on Saturday, January 24, 2009 Ok these are great surround speakers I would not use in ceiling speakers of any kind for your main or center channel speakers in a surround system. These are american manufacure speakers yes by an american company.so is klipsch though.when you go to listen to in walls and in ceiling speakers at other stores they are in a sealed enclosure and they produce great bass, but when you install them in your walls they are not sealed anymore hence no bass production. So i built enclosures for the ceiling out of 1/2" mdf (under the seetrock).what a difference;can you Say BASS.even without enclosures they sound really good but any inwall speaker should have an enclosure for optimal sound(if you dont plan on building enclosures and you are doing new construction glue your sheetrock on to the 2x4's this will seal the wall for better sound using contruction adhesive, only need to glue the two studs where speakers will be located).their are a few inwall speakers with built in enclsures, but most are cheap plastic enclsures and don't produce true dynamic range.either way these are fantasic speakers no matter what way you set them up free air or enclosed. 3 out of 3 people found this helpful Was this review helpful?
