The DSi495 from Boston Acoustics, sold individually, is not your run-of-the-mill in-ceiling speaker — it's specially designed to deliver high-performance home theater. It boasts three drivers (a real rarity with in-ceiling speakers) mounted on an angled baffle. Boston Acoustics calls the concept "Hidden Theater™" — even though the speaker mounts in your ceiling, it creates the illusion that the sound is coming from ear level. And the DSi495's unique construction allows you to rotate it 360º after it's installed, so you can aim the sound just right.

The DSi495 features an 8" woofer, 3-1/2" midrange driver, and 1" Kortec® tweeter for incredibly rich, dynamic sound all across the audio spectrum. It's voice-matched to all Boston Acoustics in-wall and in-ceiling speakers, so you can mix and match them to create a personalized system, or use the DSi495s all around for absolutely top-notch home theater performance. And for music lovers, pick up a pair of DSi495s for smooth stereo sound with excellent imaging.

An optional in-ceiling bracket is recommended for installing the DSi495 in new construction.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The 5 stars are for Boston Acoustics and Crutchfield. Crutchfield's service was excellent, answering all my questions prior to order and arrival as well as after arrival. It arrived on time and in good condition with everything that was supposed to come with it. I bought the installation bracket, I highly recommend it for new construction, it greatly simplifies installing drywall around the speaker. I bought this speaker alone as the center channel because I have a couple old floor standing speakers I built in bygone days that I wanted to test with this speaker to see if I could use my old boxes instead of buying new left and right channels. Anyway, I've been listening to the combo for several days with a variety of media and everything matches perfectly. I couldn't be happier. This makes a fantastic ceiling mounted center channel. The only downside is the angle of the tweeter and midrange can't be adjusted, but it hits my sweet spot just right.

Woofers: The DSi495 uses an 8" DCD (Deep Channel Design) copolymer woofer. The DCD woofer uses a deeply grooved pole plate that enables the voice coil to travel farther for greater output without bottoming. To maintain a compact footprint, the woofer is offset behind the mid/tweeter baffle but is allowed to breath amply through a crescent-shaped vent.

Midrange Tweeter Baffle: The DSi495 presents a perfect sonic image by positioning the midrange and tweeter on an angled baffle that faces down towards the listener. Once the speaker is mounted, the angled mid/tweeter baffle can be rotated to best suit the speaker location.

Tweeters: The DSi495 has a 1" Kortec soft dome tweeter. Kortec is a silky fabric saturated on the underside with a proprietary stiffening agent. Because the inside surface of the dome is ultra stiff, the tweeter tracks the signal with ease and produces an excellent transient attack. Simultaneously, the soft, self-dampening top layer eliminates unwanted resonance. So the sound is smooth and articulate.

Surround: When using the DSi495 as a surround speaker, it can be positioned for direct or diffuse operation. When the mid/tweeter baffle is facing the listening area the sound radiated is direct, when facing a wall or corner, the sound is diffuse.

Inputs: Spring loaded posts will accept banana plugs or bare wire up to 12 gauge.

Paintable: Both the frame and grill can be painted to match the ceiling or wall. A paint shield is included to protect the speaker from being painted as well.

Moisture Resistant: The DSi495 is well suited for humid environments like the kitchen or bathroom.

Installation: After a 10.667" diameter cutout is made, the speaker is installed in the hole and held in place by 4 attached clamps. The only tool required (after the hole is cut) is a #2 Phillips head screwdriver to tighten the clamps. The clamps spread from 0.259" to 1.342", so they should cover almost any application (most drywall is 1/2" thick). The required depth to install this speaker is 5.834".
