Terriffic product

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This unit replaces my Tivoli One, the design of which is from the 1950's [wonderful sound, very inconvenient for my needs]. My one quibble is that this very convenient, good sounding and easy-to-use radio does not have a handy connection for my Android phone [which allows me to play internet radio and the music i have loaded onto the phone]. The sound is terriffic. Presets and remote easy to use. Switching from radio to Droid phone a breeze. Quick access to on/off helps my needs, as it is close to my land-line and cell phones. The size is great, with footprint SMALLER than the Bose radio [which I have as my bedside companion]. Sound quality may be at least as good as the Bose, PLUS base and trebble are adjustable where the Bose is not. I cannot comment on the alarm clock because the Dou-i Plus lives in my kitchen. Finally, the Iphone charger/dock,one of the main selling points, is convenient for my wife thereby increasing family peace [she had sticker shock when I made this purchase].

Pros: sound, convenient controls, excellent radio reception, easyof use

Cons: rear access for Android phone is inconvenient.

I think it's a very good product. It is compatible with iPhone 4s. The sound has a little too much bass but gets a little better when put at lowest setting and treble turned up. Still gets 4 stars from me.

Pros: Compatible with iPhone 4s, easy setup and overall sound is good.

Cons: Too much bass.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Looks Great Sounds Good when you can get it to work. Too many problems getting the iPod to work even after the unit spent 2 weeks in the factory authorized repair shop. Crutchfield was terrific. After a week of use out of the repair shop Crutchfield is taking the unit back and paying all of the costs. Boston did us & Crutchfield in on this unit.. Don't buy it!, leave it on back order forever

Pros: Nice looking good sound that is it.

Cons: Everything, not user friendly the snooze bar is the worst.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I wouldn't even give this product one star if you left it possible to me to review it without any selection. In the past week and a half, I've had two delivered to my home. The alarms simply do not go off when set for the iPod. I have two Apple Classic iPods, including the new one I purchased along with this clock radio. Neither produce any sound when set to function with this clock radio. Both work on other clock radios. It is not the iPods. When I called for technical support on the second unit, it was obvious the individual was simply reading the manual for the first time and knew less than I did. He kept repeating the same questions and suggested I start again from scratch. No way! I have more to do in my life than waste so much time on electronics that do not function according to the manuals sent with them. And this was the second unit, after the first was returned because the remote would not work and then the battery holder became stuck, hanging a bit out of the remote, refusing to go in or come out.

I had asked many, many questions about this Boston Acoustics clock radio before I made my initial purchase because the three dials on the front of the diagram gave me concern. Boston might be highly regarded, but not in my esteem.

Good sound, disappointing integration

Written by: Mike M from Durham, NC on January 30, 2012

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This radio/iPod dock is not fully compatible with 6th generation iPod Nanos. When the Nano goes to sleep, the Duo-I Plus is unable to wake it and one must manually power the Nano for the unit to recognize it. In addition, the advertised ability to change speaker grills is not available from BA nor Crutchfield. I thought about returning this radio/dock for a long time, but the radio reception and sound were good enough to justify the purchase.

Pros: Sound and FM radio reception

Cons: Not fully compatible with 6th generation iPod Nanos. Advertised custom speaker grills are not available.

Great iPod/FM Table Radio

Written by: MattK from Massachusetts on August 18, 2011

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

We wanted a table iPod/FM Radio for our Kitchen/Dining room area. Looked for functionality and great sound. The Duo-i Plus is easy to use and sounds Great. I wanted to be sure we got something with real speakers and woofers. This has 1 of each on both sides. The range of sound is great, low-mid-high. Every song on our iPod comes out sounding good. The FM Radio works good too... having the time on it is a bonus to us... have not, nor do we plan to use the alarm.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This is a high performance tabletop music system that allows you to
dock/charge your iPhone/iPod/iTouch. Oustanding sound quality. The LCD
automatically adjusts brightness that dims in low light, it has dual alarms with
sleep timer, AM/FM radio station presets, snooze bar, 2 auxiliary inputs, and
stero headphone jack along with a remote control that controls the radio and
iPhone/iPod/iTouch. When "wake-to-alarm or music" alarm or music gradually
increase in volumn for a gentle wake up. Setup is easy, controls are a little
hard to adjust to, but with time become easy. Quality product!

thrilled with it!

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

We've left it on upstairs in our bedroom since we got it! It's like having a
full-on stereo in our bedroom. Even at a medium volume it fills the upstairs
with well-balanced sound (and we didn't even get the extra sub).
Highlights: we bought it mainly for low volume, ya know, it's in the bedroom for
"nice" evenings. Well, this is where it really performs. The balance of bass to
highs is great at low volumes, and even flat, it is great. A truly FULL sound
coming from such a tiny unit.
Very easy to use and intuitive interface.
Good lookin'.
High volume the bass gets a little sloppy/muddy (around 25+), but who needs it
for that -- if we need it loud we'll use our stereo downstairs. Actually, I bet
if they sold port plugs it would be just fine even at high volumes too. This is
the only reason it gets a 4 instead of 5, but it should get a 4.75 if I could
give it that.

Boston Acoustics Duo - 1 Radio Very good!

Written by: Sadie from Connecticut on February 1, 2011

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

A really good radio. Quite comparable with the Bose Radio that costs $100 more. Sound is
excellent though bass is over emphasized, reception is as good or better than the Bose,
The iphone/ipod dock is great and works well. The only problem with that is that you really
can't leave your ipod/iphone in the dock when you want to listen to the radio. (not what I
think is a big problem). I would really like to give this a 4.5 rating (not available on the form
but a 4 is too low). The controls are not intuitive and require coming back to the manual
several times as you want to find out or remember how to do things-- ie. setting the alarm.
Overall it is an excellent product and I am pleased with the decision to buy it.

Sound is (too) big.

Written by: Tom B from Milwaukee, WI on May 6, 2010

I bought the Duo-i because I needed something for my bedroom that served three
purposes: a radio for general listening, a quality iPod player, and a set of
good-sounding, external speakers for my 19" TV. The Duo-i does all three jobs.
The clarity of the speakers is stunning.

The two negatives:

1. B.A. tried too hard to give this radio too big of a sound. If you like bass,
this radio's got it! I like bass, too, but gee whiz, not THAT much! Even with
the bass EQ dialed all the way down, the audio is still boomy. I experimented
by loosely plugging the rear bass ports with my fingers, and the bass tightened
up, delivering a more natural sound. So I'll be looking for the right,
breathable material to permanently plug the ports.

2. The audio lacks midrange. You can adjust the low bass and high treble, but
there's no adjustment for anything in between. Not having that 600Hz-3kHz
presence is annoying, and a radio this size should easily be able to provide it.
In order to get the best sound when running my TV's audio through the Duo-i, I
have to leave my TV's cheesy, internal speakers on. They compensate by
providing the desired mid frequencies.

If you typically listen to your stereo with a smiling graphic EQ, you'll LOVE
this radio. If you prefer a flatter frequency response and/or listen to a lot
of AM radio, audition other radios first. (Please note that I am a recording
engineer by trade, so I am going to be more critical of audio quality than most.)

Nice features BUT!

Written by: nhhun from Manchester, NH on January 19, 2010

We bought a unit ( just before Christmas) and when the system is cranked up it has good
sound. BUT, when you plug your iPhone into the dock there is a very noticeable hum.
When music is being played loud you do not hear it but if you want to play it as soft
background music you can clearly hear the hum. I've emailed BA and if they do not have
an answer to get rid of it we will be returning the system. The radio and clock features are
nice but it really is all about the sound.

Solid Performer

Written by: Mike from Fort Worth on December 30, 2009

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Before choosing the BA I was able to audition the Yamaha and Polk offering. The BA
Horizon matched the Yamaha TSX-130 in sound quality and outperformed the Polk. The
Horizon had more features than the TSX-130 such as a sub and video out and the display
was easier to read. The Polk's quality was sub par, an issue that I read in other reviews
and confirmed on the sales floor. Overall operation of the Horizon is simple and intuitive,
we were programmed and listening to music in moments. The only con I have would be the
fact I didn't buy two.

It can pull in weak FM stations while its high selectivity allows it to separate closely-spaced stations clearly. The tuning knob makes it easy to manually tune to your favorite stations. The tuning knob can be turned in either direction for manually tuning up or down the selected band. When the knob is pressed, the Duo-i Plus will seek up the radio band for the next receivable station. The Duo-i Plus radio features 15 station presets for your 5 favorite AM and 10 favorite FM stations. Once you set the preset stations, you can quickly tune the preset stations in the selected band (FM1, FM2, or AM) with a press of the preset number button.

Antenna Inputs: This unit is equipped with a built-in AM antenna and an attached 5' FM wire antenna. You can unplug either antenna if you wish to connect an optional external antenna to the AM spring-clip antenna input or the threaded FM coax antenna input.

Dual Auxiliary Inputs: The Duo-i Plus features a front panel, 3.5mm minijack input and a rear-panel stereo RCA input for connecting external audio sources to the unit such as your portable MP3 or CD player.

Subwoofer Preamp Outputs: The unit has a pair of stereo RCA subwoofer preamp outputs which allows you to connect an external powered subwoofer (sold separately) to the Duo-i Plus for added bass response.

Headphone Output: For private listening, you can plug headphones into the front panel's 3.5mm minijack headphone output. The main speaker mutes when headphones are plugged in.

Remote Control: In addition to the units easy-to-use front-panel controls, the Duo-i Plus includes an IR remote for wireless operation of the all-in-one speaker system. When the remote is not being used, it can be conveniently stored in the recess on top of the Dui-i Plus, in front of the iPod/iPhone dock . The remote also has a magnetic backing so it can be attached to almost any metal surface. The remote operates off of a single CR2025 3V lithium coin-type battery (included).

Dual Alarms: The radio features two independent wake-up alarms which can be set to music, tone, or both. When set to music or tone, the alarm tone or radio station starts playing quietly at first, then with increasing volume. When the alarm is set to both music and tone, the tuned radio station plays quietly with a gradually increasing volume. After 5 minutes, the music stops playing and the alarm tone begins to sound at a gradually increasing volume.

Snooze Feature: If you want to sleep a while longer after the alarm sounds, you can use the Snooze feature. The Snooze is activated by simply touching the metal rim around the front of the radio. The snooze function will silence the alarm for 10 minutes. Each additional touch adds another 5 minutes to the snooze time, up to a maximum of 60 minutes.

Sleep Timer: You can set the unit's sleep timer to play the radio for a preset amount of time, then shut itself off. The sleep timer can be set for up to 90 minutes in 5-minute increments.

Audio Controls: You can independently adjust the bass and treble between -7 and 7.

Boston P.O.P.: The Boston Personal Option Plan (P.O.P.) allows you to match your environment with optional grilles in multiple colors for the series speakers. In addition to the Onyx grilles that come with the speakers, you can purchase grilles in Glacier, Chocolate, Rose Bud, Chili Pepper, Caramel, Pearl Gray, Moss, or Olive. These optional grilles are available directly from the manufacturer.
